Airport cards in ibook

Does anyone know if an emac airport card would fit/work in an ibook that has no card at present?

I bumped into this thread while trying to get an old G3 ibook 500mhz iBook [OSX 10.4.11] connected to a new router.
The problem was that the wireless password was not being recognised. The computer was able to connect to unsecured networks, but not mine.
It transpires that the old Airport card is only '802.11 b' compatible. You can check this out on wiki - newer standards came in years later. The router should be 802.11 b/g/n compatible, according to its settings - but it just refused to accept the iBook's password.
I found threads which said put a $ sign first - or change the settings to just 802.11 b, or to WEP from WPA2 - and so on. Mind numbing stuff which sadly did not seem to do the trick.
The latter remedies would affect the rest of the network (5 various Macs) - so were less than ideal.
By chance I bought last week an EdiMax EW-7711 USB wireless adapter [802.11 n compatible] off Amazon for c.£12/$15 - much less than an Airport card. I was setting up an oldish Mac Mini for the kids to use. It worked first time (yes, I was surprised too).
I tried it on the iBook - instant results. So the moral is - beware of buying an 'ancient' Airport card - it may not work with a new router. If it does, it may work less fast than a newer device. It may force you to lower your wireless network speed generally.
Obviously, your router may be more forgiving - and the internal card is more elegant than a USB stick.
Good luck. There are posts out there from people who struggled for much too long to no avail to get their Airport card working.

  • Airport card on ibook won't connect to D-Link router

    Greetings:
Just bought an airport card to put in my iBook. This replaces a MacSense Aeropad Mini (external wireless card) that has been hanging off the computer and working fine all over the house.
Although I get the iBook to see the airport card (filled-in icon in menu bar) and it tells me there's a signal, I can't get my browser to go to any sites ("Firefox can't find the server at....")
Router is a D-Link DI-514, connected to a Qwest DSL line. I've made sure the WEP hex password # is the same, and I THINK the "network name" is the same (when inputting it in the airport drop-down menu option.
Any ideas on what to do next? Ditch the D-Link and buy an airport base station that'll speak the same language?
    Thanks,
    Carlos Alden

    Okay, some progress:
After hours of googling and fussing with settings on the D-Link and Airport card, I discovered that this problem has a history with Apple/D-Link users, and one must set the "preamble length" in the router setup to "long." The default setting is "short."
Did that, and I was able to get through, but noticed that the signal range is very short, maybe 30 feet. Totally goes out in the other room. This never happened with the MacSense external card. I tried fooling around with the D-Link antennae and now have cut the signal altogether again and can't get back in.
I think it's time to buy an Airport base station, whatever the latest incarnation of it is. It's pretty frustrating know that there's probably some solution but it's buried deeply. Any ideas on how to get this operating more smoothly would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Carlos Alden

  • Airport card for ibook G3

Can you install a wireless card for the ibook G3 Model: A1007?
I have a friend who wants to upgrade his ibook for his lady.
    Thanks!
    John M.

Yes I believe so if it is a white model. Its the older airport card (not the extreme). It slips into a slot under the keyboard. You can look under the keyboard by pulling the 2X little tabs just above the top key line and pulling the keyboard towards you.
    Looks like this: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Airport-Card-Network-adapter/dp/B0000899ZD

  • Switching Ti Powerbook Airport card to iBook G3 , need advice

    Hello,
I have a Ti Powerbook G4 1GHz running OS 10.4.5 and recently got my husband a G3 ibook 600 MHz running 10.2.8. I want to get him up and running wirelessly so I thought I would install my Airport card in his book and look for something else or my Powerbook. Do all the 3rd party cards hang out of the laptop and/or have antennas that extend? He surfs about three times a week, I am online 2 or more times a day. I would rarther not have somthing that hangs out or can get caught. However I thought it would be a plus to have my system on 802.11g.....
Is there a better solution for his system? I am just looking into it and would appreciate anyone's advice on options for our systems.
    Thanks for your help.

    Zyvette,Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This sounds like a good plan.
The iBook needs an original Airport card that the Ti has.
Check out this site which has the manuals for all Macs - choose your models and the Airport card instructions are in there.
You certainly can put a 802.11g card in your Ti - it will stick out a little, but it's that or spending $100+ or so on a 2nd hand original Airport card on ebay.
Alternatively I have seen one of these cards crammed inside an Airport slot with some modifications - see this post.

  • Add Airport card to iBook?

About 3 years ago I bought an iBook. I didn't purchase it with an AirPort card installed. Now I would like to be able to surf the Internet wirelessly. What steps do I take and what do I need to buy to make that happen?

    Hi A s7,
First thing you need is an Airport Base Station, or a wireless router. I prefer the Airports because they are easy to set up and are great quality. The different Airports are Airport Express or Airport Extreme. You should go to the Airport Discussion page to find out more information. For the card you will want an Airport Extreme Card. I think this document from PBFixit will help. It is the instructions oh how to install an Airport Extreme Card in an iBook G4.
    I hope that helps,

  • Swapping Airport Cards Between iBook G3s

So, I have a 2003 ibook G3 that has no airport card installed and an old ibook G3 that does have an airport card. The old G3 is one of those cool "clam" ibooks, so it's relatively old and running OS 9. The 2003 G3 is running OS X.4.5. I don't use my old ibook anymore, so I'd really like to just swap the airport card from the old G3 and put it in my 2003 ibook. Does that work? Any reason I shouldn't? Cannibalizing parts makes me a little nervous.
Here are the specs on the two computers:
    2003 ibook G3 (PowerPC 750) 900 mhz
    old ibook G3 300 mhz

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You have stumbled onto a veritable gold mine!
Yes. They will work fine in a G3 iBook (any G3 iBook).
If you are looking to run 10.4 on a G3 though, look for one that has had its hard drive upgraded (the bigger, the better). And lots of memory, too. The iBook G3 (Dual UB) can take 640 MB with a 512 MB RAM module added to the 128 MB soldered to the logic board. (Some of the very earliest 500 MHz models had only 64 MB on the logic board, so are only upgradeable to 576 MB of RAM.)
I hope you have nearly as much luck finding a good iBook as you did finding the AirPort cards!

  • Resolution of Logic Board/Airport card failure  - iBook G4 2005?

Well, after my first post this morning, I was kindly advised to post a new topic regarding my kernel panics and not-so-nice grey screens of death!
    So here goes....
I had experienced this problem since January, when my iBook purchased in April 2006 was coming up to it's first birthday. The problem was this - the iBook would freeze and i'd get a message stating that I needed to re-start. After re-starting, i'd get about 2-3 minutes of use, before the symtoms occured again.
I had the logic-board and airport card replaced twice, by an Apple Store, back in January. The first replacement failed as soon as I got it home, the second replacement failed last night.
So, somewhat dejectedly, I drove to Apple this morning, after booking a Procare session. I was expecting a bill of around £450, as that's what they quoted me back in January, if I had to pay for it. This time I would, as my iBook was 1 month out of warranty, with no Apple Care extended support.
Upon arriving 45 minutes early for my session at the 'Genius Bar', I was promptly served, and advised the tech-guru guy what the issue was. Upon looking at the logs, he checked my warranty, found it had expired, then told me to 'wait', and disappeared into the back office.
Some 5 minutes later, he reappeared, and simply said "have you still got the box for the iBook?"
I did, but it was at home, some 45 minutes away. Then he said these magic words - "We're going to replace it, and give you a new MacBook, free-of-charge"
I was blown away by this approach. I'd expected a repair, possibly a charge, depending on whether they realised that both replacements had been faulty. However, with a machine 1 month out-of-warranty, I did NOT expect a replacement machine.
However, that's what I got. So, I'm composing this thread on a brand-new MacBook Intel Core-2 Duo, with the new spec 1GB RAM and 80GB hard drive.
So, I'd like to take this moment to commend Apple on their outstanding customer-focused approach. Well-done on resolving my issue. Good luck to the rest of you experiencing similar issues.
    iBook G4 2005   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Your ibook G4 (purchased april 06 probably being the 1.3 ghz model) was worth about 440 pounds second hand. The quoted repair bill of 450 was higher than the price of the machine itself, and you were going to pay it?
There are unopened macbooks on ebay for 520-540 pounds (inc apple sales receipts+warranty).
Them asking you for the box means they're going to con another customer into buying your broken machine.

  • Where can I buy the airport card for the G3 ibook?

    Hi
I recently purchased an old ibook G3 and am wanting to use it wirelessly. I can't seem to locate the airport card that is needed to make it work. Can i buy it from the mac store online? Also, i have the airport extreme at home...will it work on that network with the airport card?? Cheers

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
No, the original AirPort card the iBook needs is no longer available from Apple.
I just checked these links for the original AirPort card today (ranked in order of price, lowest to highest, shipping not figured):

Yes, it will work with your AirPort Extreme Base Station.
    Good luck with the iBook.

  • Airport card 1.2.1 does not work with Ibook G3 with OSx.4.2

I just purchased a brand new airport express base station. It seems to be up and running on my G4Imac just fine as a server.
    For the client,
I have an ibook G3 and now have OSX.3.4 on it.
I installed my ancient Airport card- 1.2.1 into the Ibook.
I installed the new software from the new Airport base station.
I tried to install the old software from the Airport 1.2.1 card but dont have Classic- so would not install.
Now, the Ibook does not allow me to choose Airport in the Network Preferences section- does not seem to recognize there is a card installed. So, no way to connect to the base station.
    My questions:
1.can OS X..3.4 recognize the old Airport 1.2.1?
    2. Does the software from the new base station support the old card when used in the client?
    3. Do I need different software for the card in the iBook other then the base station software? ie, is there card software that needs to be installed, and if so what is it in system X?
Im trying to figure out if I have a hardward problem- ie the card or slot is not working- or s software problem.
    Can anyone help?

MacOS 10.3.x has all the software to use an Airport card already installed. All I would recommend you do is install the Airport 4.1 update provided at:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41formacosx.html
The software that ships on the CD that came with the Airport Express is only used to configure an Airport Express. It doesn't provide any software updates for the MacOS itself, nor for the Airport card installed in that Mac.
First thing I suggest you do - run the System Profiler utility on your Mac. See if it identifies that an Airport card is installed. If it does not then recheck the installation of the card - ie pull out the card, then plug it in again and make sure it is fully seated into its socket. Remember to also attach the antenna cable to the card. If the System Profiler still fails to "see" the installed Airport card, then the card itself is likely defective.
[Side note: Airport 1.2.1 was the version of the Airport software required to provide software support for the card in ancient MacOS versions. Airport 1.2.1 is not actually installed on the Airport card itself, so if you install an original Airport card into another Mac it makes no difference what Airport version was installed on the Mac the card was pulled from.]

  • How to use iBook for sharing internet via airport card... can it be done?

The title says most of it all. I want to share the internet coming from the wall through the airport card in my iBook. I've made it work, however I'm concerned about doing it securely. Can it be done securely? If so, how? I've read in the help files about using the firewalls and such, but I'm having trouble making heads or tails out of it all. How about a primer on basic wifi security in the iBook's Airport card environment? I'm not as savvy as I used to be! Thanks in advance for your help.

    ride a bike:
    Requirements for wireless Internet access
To use AirPort to access the Internet wirelessly using Mac OS X, you need:
An Apple AirPort Card, AirPort Extreme Card, or a compatible third-party wireless card
An AirPort Base Station, Time Capsule, AirPort Express, or an AirPort-enabled computer acting as a software base station (if you are hosting an AirPort wireless network)
    Internet access
Some Internet service providers (ISPs) are not currently compatible with AirPort.
If you’re setting up an AirPort Base Station, Time Capsule, or AirPort Express to connect to the Internet, you need an account with an ISP. When you set up your account with your ISP, you were most likely given account information (such as user or account name, password, phone number, and possibly other information). Have this information ready when you set up your device.
If you are connecting your base station to an Ethernet network that already has an Internet connection, you may need an account name and password to access the network. Check with the network administrator if you’re not sure.

  • Where is the Airport Card in a 14-inch 1.42GHz iBook?

A friend of mine is having problems with the Airport card in her 14-inch 1.42GHz iBook. She thought it came unseated and asked me to check. I went to iFixit.com to see where it was located. I followed the guide and, lo and behold, there is no card under the keyboard!
Where is the Airport Extreme card in this model iBook? I am puzzled. HELP!

I do not believe that there is a regular AirPort Extreme card in that iBook.
Regardless it is considered "built-in" and not a user serviceable part on that iBook.

  • Old iBook with airport card

    Hi,
I have a little problem and am an absolute novice in this field. I have a network set up at home with a Netgear router and 3 x G3/300 happily
    connected via wire.
My son got himself an old iBook (in very good knick...) and the thing is equipped with an airport card.
Can I connect the iBook to the Netgear router (the router has also wireless capabilities).
I have tried, but to no avail. The green pins in the control strip are all green,
and if I open the airport, the signal is very strong (but the status says "not available'.
Also, when I open the router settings on my G3, my router detects the wireless iBook, but still I cannot get on the web from the iBook.
oh... most importantly, the iBook is running os 9.2.2, and the other machines on the network are in mixed configuration (OS 9/X).
    Any suggestions??

try removing, then replacing the airport card in your comp

  • IBook G4 internal Airport card faulty

I have had my iBook G4 since mid 2005 and up until recently it has been brilliant but sadly it has started crashing and the report indicates that the airport card is at fault. Having spoken with the local mac repairer they suggested that changing the card could solve the problem but equally, given the age of the laptop, it could ultimately be the logic board!! Rather than throw good money after bad their suggestion was to disconnect the airport card (which seems to be integrated rather than easily removable) and use a usb wifi connection. They suggest D-Link WUA-1340 but I cannot find this anywhere in the UK. Does anyone have a suggestion where I can buy this or an alternative that will work. Thank you.

this is what it looks like anyway: http://www.ifixit.com/iBook-Parts/iBook-G4-12-Inch-1-33-GHz-or-14-Inch-1-42-GHz- Airport-Bluetooth-Board/IF183-054
anymore, most adapters have a pretty good chance of working. Check around for which models are available where you live & then search for mac compatability on those.

  • G4 iBook 1.33 (mid-2005) airport card install instructions?

I asked this question in an earlier post but the title was misleading, I think.
I need to reseat my Airport Express card and I don't know where it is or how to do it. Please point me to the appropriate URL that has diagrams.
I've searched and searched and can't find it.
    ibook g4 1.33 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

In case you haven't already found out, the 1.33 (mid-2005 model) iBook is the only model without user-access to the airport card. In order to have it re-seated or replaced, you have to take it to an Apple Tech.

  • Using WPA with a G3 ibook with Airport Card

    G3 800 ibook
    Running 10.4.7
    Airport Card
    Router DLink DIR-625
This is the only non-extreme unit I have. All other connect with no problem. When I set up WPA and attempt to connect with this machine, I get the following message
the wireless network "xxx" does not support the requested encryption method.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this?
    Thanks!

As long as you are running AirPort software 3.3 or better you should be able to connect to a WPA network. See KB 107795, AirPort Card: When You Can Join a WPA Network.
Verify that the network is NOT using WPA2. You can't join a WPA2 protected network.
