Airport connectivity is really sporadic - like weeks on, DAYS off!

Okay, I'm officially frustrated. I have an Extreme Base station (XBS) and an Airport Express (AEX). Both of which lose wireless connectivity for extended periods of time - like days! I've tried everything that I can (resetting, deleting preferences, etc.) and it just won't work. Last night I erased my disk and re-installed OS 10.3.9 thinking that it's something inside my computer and it's STILL not working. I checked the 'console.log' and noticed the line: 'readHCFInfo: airPortExec returns error : e00002e9'
Can anyone help me figure this situation out? Is it my Airport Card? Base Station(s)? Motherboard?
Because I'm ready to throw this thing out the window!

Hi Duane.
I wish it were that easy... I have them set to a specific channel. Any other ideas? Do you know of a way I can verify it's not a mother board issue?
I failed to mention that about 6 months ago, my airport stopped working just like it's doing now. Anyway, before my Apple Care Support expired, I was on the phone with a tech for about 3 hours. After running all of these tests, they determined that it might be the mother board. So I took it in. There, the support team told me that the airport card was able to detect their network immediately!!
So basically, I've narrowed it down to either sporadic interference, (which, in my opinion seems odd) or a mother board. Any suggestions?

  • Airport connection is REALLY Poor! Any ideas on how to improve?

I have 2 Macs in the house. The Macbook connects with a full signal to the broadband hub whilst in the same room or on the next door room. The newer and more powerful PowerBook G4 barely gets a reading on the same hub, even when a few metres away.
Can anyone tell me why this is and how we can improve the reception/connection?
    CArd details are:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x4E)
    Wireless Card Locale: Unknown
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.25.8)
    Current Wireless Network: BTBusinessHub-550
    Wireless Channel: 1
    Many thanks.

  • 10.4.9 Intel update killed my Airport connection

Had the EXACT same problem with 10.4.8, so I eventually reverted back to 10.4.7. Once 10.4.9 came out, I thought I'd be safe, but after the update, my Airport connection constantly drops, sometimes several times a day, for no apparent reason. After it drops, the network is not visible and only a restart will return the connection.
    1. Firmware is up to date
    2. All security updates are in place
    3. Hard reset on AE fixed the problem for a couple of days, but no longer
    4. I have a 17" Intel iMac, Time Warner cable modem
    5. When the connection drops, AE light is still steady green
Called Apple support and the phone guy started in on my cordless phones providing interference. I knew that was going to go nowhere since five seconds before I installed 10.4.9, I had ZERO problems. It ain't my phones. I would just go to a wired setup, but I rely desperately on AE to stream my music. Any advice? I've trolled the forums for hours, but haven't found a solution...

After multiple calls to AppleCare, determined it was cordless phone interference (2.4Ghz). No idea why this interference doesn't exist prior to 10.4.8, but whatever. Got a new 6.0 DECT phone today and so far, no dropouts. $70 I wish I didn't have to spend...

  • MAC MINI- Airport Connection cutting out regularly

MAC MINI- 10.4.11 1.5GHz intel core solo
My mac (above) keeps losing airport connection (to my BT homehub router-which is newish)- Has been running fine for years-changed my router-was still running fine for a few weeks AND NOW....keeps cutting out wireless signal for no reason. I have other macs/comps on same signal (nearer router also!) which are unaffected-only mac mini is... I have tried everything I can think of and been on forums etc all day...
Cuts out-won't recognise my router- then after a restart it sometimes comes back on-sometimes just comes back on itself after an hour or so also.... When its on, the signal gradually loses strength till it gets to zero-then disconnects and won't recognise any wireless devices (it usually lists a few that are in my building)....SO- router is OK as other comps are fine- it must be mac mini fault- have had no software updates recently either-so really don't know what to do next! help!

    Hi,
thanks for your reply-I have tried every channel possible (before posting my first post)- but like I say -it connects fine at first (sometimes-especially if comp has been shut down overnight)-then after about 15-30 mins the bars start dropping and then it goes and won't come back on... I know it is not the router as my other mac (which is further away from router and also is a much older computer) has never had any problems like this before and doesn't have any while the mini is disconnecting..
I have tried everything I can think of and have spent hours and hours reading through other similar posts- but can't find anything that works....
If the mini macs have a weak antenna then why has it been ok in connecting since I bought it (was one of the first mini's to come out) ? Do you think it gets weaker with age? Why is it ok for a bit then disconnects, then is ok, then is not etc etc ??
Thanks for your help anyway-any other suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated as I am about to throw it out the window!!cheers.

  • Airport connection drops when using external monitor

I just bought a new monitor to use as a 2nd display for my Macbook. Problem is, as soon as I plug it in, my wireless connection just kills over and dies a horrible death, but as soon as I unplug my MiniDisplay to DVI adapter, it works great.
I've been searching around and there were a few topics on this, but it didn't really look like anyone had a definitive answer for what to do. Some suggested that the DVI cable wasn't shielded and that was causing RF interference, but my DVI cable has the little round plugs at each end.
Is there any other possibilities to fix this?
    Thanks

I was having this same problem for quite some time, and several Genius Bar people were not able to diagnose the problem. I checked back from time to time on the net to see if anyone had figured this out, and someone now has. For me, it was as simple as changing the channel option of the airport express from automatic to a manual selection...in my case "6." I've seen a couple posts on this now and some switch from 11 to 6, or vice versa. Mine was set up for automatic selection, so I first manually selected 11. That didn't help, but selecting 6 fixed things immediately. Here's the thread that helped me: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11051427
and since I found it's not that easy if you don't know how, here are directions for changing the channel on your airport express:

  • Loss Airport Connectivity

I have been using for months a PowerBook G4 Titanium 400Mhz with an Airport card, connected to a D-Link DI-524 router. This setup has been working without a problem (not very fast but without problems!). Today, without any visible reason, Airport stop recognizing any network. I haven't changed a thing and a MacBook Pro sitting just beside is recognizing two available networks (and using one of them).
Trying to solve this issue, I already have:
    1. shut down everything (computer, router…) and start again
    2. reset the PRAM
    3. take the Airport card off and insert it again
    4. check if the card slot's connection to the logic board where loose
    5. do the ‘press the antenna’ trick (used for some people to improve range)
None of these things solved the problem and the PowerBook remains unconnected…
    Any ideas? Thanks.

My airport started working "erratically" a few weeks ago. It would be fine for a while but then drop the connection and, like tomasgf, it wouldn't even recognise a network let alone connect to it. Then, an hour later or so, it would recognise the network and automatically connect again. And all the time my other computer was connected fine so it wasn't a problem with the router.
Because it kept coming and going I thought it was probably an antenna problem - most likely the cable being pinched by the display hinge) so I started being very careful to not move the screen at all. (I think on all Ti-Books the antenna goes through the hinge and around the edge of the display.)
However, it still dropped it and then randomly found it even when I just left the whole thing alone. So I decided to open her up and check that the Airport Card was properly seated and the antenna cable was plugged in. Both looked fine. So I was somewhat stuck.
Took it to a Genius in the Regents Street store a few days later and, once he'd congratulated me on my 'antique', he couldn't think of anything that would cause the problem off the top of his head. So he opened her up to check things as I had done and concluded all was okay. He also booted up from an external disk and it still wouldn't pick up the network which shows that, for me at least, it isn't a software issue.
It didn't work at all for a few days and then, about a week ago, it started working and has been perfect since. I've been opening and closing it at will, shifting the screen freely, and it's fine. I've not added any applications let alone updating any software at any point (and even when it started wasn't after any system alterations).
So, maybe somewhat uselessly, I cannot offer a solution other. Merely wanted to document that this could inexplicably happen. I guess I feel that it is most likely an antenna issue so I sadly expect it to recur. However, the cost and ease of putting a new ethernet card with it's own antenna in the PC card slot will likely lead me to do that rather than opening up the display casing to find the true cause of the problem.

  • Airport connects to wireless network, can't get on internet

    Hi All -
Having a weird problem. Set up new high speed wireless at home (ATT/Yahoo with a 2wire wireless router. Had NO problem setting up my MacPro (wired ethernet), MacBook (airport) and my wife's PC (I know, she's switching as soon as we can).. but for some reason my older Dual G4 with an Airport Card will NOT connect.
The Airport seems to connect to the Wireless network NO problem. I enter the WEP password and I am in as far as Airport is concerned. But it won't connect to the internet.
I tried like all the other machine to go into Network/Airport and set it up for DHCP just like all the other machines, however it gives a message in Network Status:
"Airport is connected to the Network 2WIRE900. Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to cnnnect to the internet"
When I go to show Airport, and choose "Using DHCP (like all the other comps) it has an IP that is not in the range of what is assigned by the router.. I never put that IP there, so I have no idea. I have tried to renew the lease, change to manual, then switch back to DHCP, etc. All to no avail.
It also does not show the Router IP address either..
I am really stuck and at a standstill as this Mac not only can't get online, but it has 3 500GB drives full of info I need to access from my other Macs.
Any Help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Duane,
    Thanks for the reply.
Yes, wireless mode is set to 802.11b/g
I did not enable a MAC list. I see that option on the router but am unsure of if I should enable it or how to do so.
    It says:
Tip: To discover new devices to be added, disable the MAC Filtering feature for one minute, then refresh this page. Once new devices are listed, re-enable the MAC Filtering feature and modify the list below.
You can also add a MAC address manually.
As I stated, I setup my MacBook with no problems. It immediately recognized the network and turning on DHCP the router assigned it an IP without a problem.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Dropping airport connection

When I use iChat with Bonjour IM my AirPort connection drops for some unknown reason. It seems to only happen on my PowerBook and not my girlfriends iMac. We are on the same network too. As well as this problem, we have the problem of not being able to see each others screen names in iChat even though the privacy measures are on "allow all" to see and contact me. Any help?

I am having a similar problem, using an AirPort Extreme (gigabit) with about 15-20 users. Every now and again, the AirPort connection will disappear, reconnecting almost immediately, (almost like the AirPort is restarting itself, though it shows no sign of such in the logs), and when network connections are restoring, Bonjour communication won't really be working. Where there were all the people on our network, only a few will show up, if any of them show up. This does not seem to be a service issue on the workstations themselves, since I can plug into ethernet and have all the other people running iChat show up in the Bonjour list, so it seems to be related to the AirPort Extreme specifically.
If anyone has any insight on how to verify that the AirPort Extreme is routing local mDNS traffic, or things to look for in the AirPort log that might indicate why it's restarting, it would be VERY much appreciated.

  • Slow airport connection

hi my airport connection has gone really slow recently and doesn't open the page but works fine on cable connection through the same router also iphone and ipad work fine wirelessly via same box. any ideas would be massively appreciated

It is a cable connection. Linksys model BEFW11S4 V.2
Signal seems to be fine... that is to say that our roomate's computer was only very slightly effected by the slow connection that we've been having.
Again, this has only been going on for about a week and a half... before that, it was your typical, super-fast cable modem connection.

  • Airport connection drops under load.

    Hello Community!
I have some serious Airport connection woes - whenever I heavily use the airport connection it seems to drop out every now and then. The intervals have no visible pattern, but the dropouts are directly linked to the amount of traffic going trough the Airport card.
The dropping is quickly and the Airport connection icon goes from the full 5 bars to greyed out and back. This happens at an increasing rate when it has happend for the first time after an restart.
    Here's a screencast I took to illustrate the problem: [www.verpeiltaber.net/airport.mov] (Quicktime, 1.30MB)
It also drops out (invisibly) when I Skype-Out, which is extremely annoying as I pay money for that and then the other side cannot hear me anymore after such a dropout. Strangely it never kills the entire call tough. It never happens when the computer is tethered to a LAN-Cable.
I have reinstalled Leopard from scratch just two weeks ago. I upgraded from Tiger before and had the problems with that version of the Leopard install aswell. Tiger didn't exhibit the problems - which leads me to believe that this is a software issue.
The Router is a D-Link 524 with the newest aviable firmware, and has been resetted multiple times. Other computers using the same WLAN work without any hitch.
This issue has popped up in my office WLAN, which uses a Lucent Router, aswell.
I'm pulling my hairs out here - help me please!
Edit: All the latest updates are installed, like the recent Time Machine & Airport update. No third party extensions or mods are installed. The issue is operating-system - wide.

I have been having the same problem since upgrading to 10.5.2 and it's driving me nuts! Momentary disconnections every 10-15 minutes making messenger, iChat, etc. completely useless.
I purchased a 15" macbook pro for my partner 2 weeks ago - it's having the exact same issues. I'm thinking of returning the machine as I've tried everything. I have no problems with any other machine connected to my router.

Hello. First time using this. Still trying to figure out how to post my questions. I seem to have lost some of my settings and now I cannot configure my airport connection. How do I get my settings back?

If you are using cable and a Nethear router sounds like from the information you provide before your Airport setting are setup improperly. PPoE is not something a cable service would need to work. Fallow the steps I will provide bellow, I will add some screen shots also to assist if necessary.
1 - Open System Preferences from  (Menu)
    2 - Click "Network"
3 - From the Network window you are going to wanna make sure Location is : Automatic and Show is : Airport
4 - Once the Show: Airport is select you should see a window like this, my window is selected for Ethernet simply because I am no longer running Tiger but the window will look the same.
5 - You will want to click on the PPPoE tab and you should see this
6 - You're gonna wanna make sure " connection using PPPoE " is not select, if it is make sure to uncheck this option
7 - Once this is uncheck make sure to click "Apply Now"
8 - You will want to click back on to the "TCP/IP" tab and make sure IPv4 is set to " Using DHCP "
9 - If the option to " Apply Now" is available again please click this
10 - Once this is done go to your Aiport Menu and see if your network is listed and select your network and eneter the password if necessary.
11 - If after these steps you still have issues I would recommend Power Cylcing your Router and Modem for about 5 minutes
12 - Make sure all lights are off when unplugging the Router and the Modem
13 - Some Modems have backup batterys so you may have to push in a tiny button on the back with a pin

  • MacBook Pro and Airport connection problem

My MacBook Pro has a volatile connection to my Airport Express base station.
I have a 2-month old 15.4" MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo), all software updates are installed, etc. I connect to the internet through an Airport base station. For the past few days my MBP has had a dodgy connection, slowing down at seeming random and then occasionally disconnecting from the base station entirely, although the Airport icon on the MBP is always on. While downloading a file I noticed that the speed of the connection was incrementally slowing until it stopped, and it was only after a couple of retries and then connecting to the base station again (by finding it amongst the other networks on the pull-down menu that you get when you click on the Airport icon) that my connection resumed at its previous speed.
My 12" PowerPC iBook connects to the internet over this Airport base station at full speed, no problems.
I've tried resetting the PRAM on my MBP without change.
One possibly noteworthy change is that this past week I updated my Parallels software to 3.0, which may have an effect based on some of the other threads I've read.
    What now?!

After trying all of the above the suggestions, the problem returned as before. However, after digging some more I discovered that the issue appears to lie with the 10.4.10 version of the Mac OS; when I checked the software log under the system profiler I noticed that I had installed that update at about the time my Airport problems began. Apple then quietly released a v 1.1 combo update to 10.4.10 on July 2nd, which once installed appears to have resolved the problem. You can find the download at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
What's curious is that originally Apple listed that the v 1.1 combo update resolved some issues with RAW image data, and some sound problems, which don't seem to have anything to do with Airport.

I sync my iphone with my office computer, but what I really would like to do is syncing only the calendars (because my secretary uses them to set up new apppointments), but syncing all the rest on my home computer. Is it possible without losing apps or music?

    Although not recommended, yes.
Disable automatic syncing when the iPhone is connected with iTunes on each computer.
The only item you will have selected for syncing with iTunes on your computer at work will be Calendars, which is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. Nothing else will be selected under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes on your computer at work. You will get a warning message that your iPhone is associated with another iTunes library on a different computer which you can ignore when syncing calendars/calendar events only with iTunes on your computer at work.

  • Airport connected to modem but no internet.

So I have the Airport connected to my cable modem but the Airport just blinks orange the whole time and the activity light isn't moving at all on the modem and I can't get online.
I've tried unplugging the modem and Airport then like 15 minutes later I plug the modem in then 15 minutes later I plug the Airport in, but it doesn't seem to be working, any thoughts?

Alright, so I called Apple and fixed it, so for anyone else with this problem here's what I had to do.
I unplugged everything from the Airport and the Airport itself from the wall, held down the grey reset button on the bottom of it, while holding it down plugged it back into the wall and held the button till the light flashed green 3 times then went to orange and went back and opened Airport Utility and had to put in all my information again, holding down the button put it back to it's default settings.
