Airport connects but wrong IP

Two days ago my Internet connection suddenly stopped working. Everything else on my computer appears normal-- my Airport shows a green light and shows a strong signal as well as registers an IP just not the right one.
When I got to open up a web browser it appears as though I am not connected. I have called Comcast (my internet provider) and they walked me through a series of steps to try to fix the problem with no success. I am able to connect directly through the built in ethernet but only after connecting and then resetting the modem (otherwise it will register another different but incorrect IP address). Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I have tried everything from resetting the Airport to trying to reconfigure it and set up a new network.
Please help!!

  • Airport connected but can't get internet....PLEASE HELP!!!

I am a college student who went to college and used an apple airport base station for my mbp and everything worked fine, and before i went to school i used my parents linksys wireless router and it all worked fine. i came home from college today and used the internet (over the linksys router) for about 5 minutes, then came back a few hours later. after i came back my computer said i was connected via airport to the linksys router but i cant load any page at all with any internet browser, also aim and msn messenger wont work. when i get on the internet i get this message "safari can’t open the page “http://www.yahoo.com/”. The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message." i can connect if i plug my mbp in and i have tried the network diagnostics for airport several times, and it comes back saying that i am connected and it is all working fine, but its not. any help would be great. thanks.

I have the same problem...New MacBook Pro connects fine to Airport at home. Shows connected to WPA network at work but no Internet connectivity - or it takes a VERY long time to pull anything up. Have run the Network Diagnostics successfully and Mac thinks it is connected, but still not able to reach web sites.
Have followed instructions here: Article ID: 106799 Mac OS: Long Delay Before Web Pages Start to Load, Then Load Suddenly at Normal Speed without success. Can hardwire my MacBook Pro and use the network in this way.
I am a network admin and I set-up the wireless so I am familiar with the details, but am truly baffled why my Mac will not connect to the Internet.

  • Airport connected but no interent

    Hi
I intalled an airport in my home using a wireless ethernet connection (web os) which normally works fine when connected straight into a windows laptop. But when i connect the ethernet into the airport and connect to it over wifi i can see the airport but it refuses to connect to the interent? I know the airport works over this wireless ethernet network as i tested it at a neighbours house. So its not a problem with the airport but rather the connection which wont give the airport what it needs to connect to the interet.
i am waiting for a new macbook air which arrives next week so want to get the wireless working before i switch
Can anyone offer assistance even my wireless network provider is baffled or just stupid!?

I have tried reseting the DNS server as someone in another discussion recommended but that didnt help, also reset the airport express but no help, is this a settings issue or my internet provider's issue?

  • Airport connects, but still no internet activity...

Heya. This is my first post so be gentle with me.
I've recently had an issue with my Powerbook G4 12 inch where I could connect to an open wireless network (no WEP password) and my internet would function fine, until the past three days when Airport says it's connected but I can't browse the internet, use BitTorrent etc.
Now when I open Firefox, it doesn't go immediately to a "page cannot be displayed" dialog, it just keeps looking for the page for a few minutes. Also, when I run network diagnostics, everything is green until "internet".
I don't have access to the modem or router base station.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I just posted my own experience in the forum "internet, networking and Power Mac G4" which is the same as the one of nofryzone. In that discussion, I think Lawrence Kahan has the answer to our problem. I will still have to try his proposed solution because it will entail changing the firmware of the linksys wrt54g router. In order to connect, I asked the help of [email protected] and they made me configure my airport connection manually placing the values that Lawrence Kahan wrote in his post. You will have to open system preferences and click on network. Configure Airport settings manually and enter the IP address 192.168.1.55, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, router 192.168.1.1. For the DNS server, you will have to get the value of DNS1 & DNS2 of your router and put them in the field for DNS server.
At least for now I am able to connect but through a static IP address and not through DHCP.

  • Airport Connects but has Self-Assigned IP address and no internet

All right Apple this is some Bull#@$% I own 3 Apple units One is a MacBook Pro, one is a Macbook and the other is a G5 Dual processor tower. The MacBook and Tower are using OS X 10.5.5 and the MacBook Pro has OS X 10.4.11. Ok here is my problem all of a sudden all 3 units that had been connecting to the same wireless router for the past year started saying (AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet) Apple Care suggested replacing the router well I did that and hello I have the same message. Its connecting but not going to the internet. Under network status I have green lights for Airport and Airport settings a yellow light for network settings and red lights for ISP, Internet and Server. I have this problem with both MacBooks both at the library, my friends house and my neighbors house thats 4 different wireless networks that do the same dang thing. I need help!!

I have also encountered this problem and I have been researching it all over the internet all evening and trying everything I could find a suggestion for. Here's what I have: Two G4 Powerbooks, one is a 550MHz 15" Powerbook, the other is a 1.5 GHz 17" Powerbook, they are both running 10.4.11 with all the updates that Software Update has to offer, the 17" is connecting via built in Airport Extreme card, the 15" is connecting via Sonnets Aria Extreme PC card. I have AT&T DSL and I'm using the 2Wire modem/router they provided me with. Neither of the Powerbooks can connect wirelessly to the internet. Furthermore, they cannot even ping the wireless router. 4 days ago, both were connecting without any trouble (and had been able to reliably every day since the beginning of August when I hooked everything up). I have made no changes to my router's settings over the weekend. Nor had I made any changes to the Powerbooks' settings during that time. It just stopped working. If I wire one or both of them to the router with ethernet cables, connection works fine. My Desktop G4 which is normally wired into the router via ethernet, connects fine so I know my internet service is available.
So far, I've restarted both machines numerous times, restarted the router numerous times. Reset the WEP password. Changed the wireless security to WPA. Changed it back to WEP. Trashed the airport plist. deleted every wireless network entry in Keychain. Disabled DHCP and assigned IP numbers manually. Changed the wireless channel (I've tried 1, 6, and 11 with and without interference robustness).
I've been reading posts about this issue on half a dozen web forums (dating back to as early as June 2004). It appears to affect a variety of routers (2Wire, Netgear, Linksys), a variety of machines (Powerbooks, iBooks, MacBookPros, iMacs) a variety of OSes (10.3, 10.4, 10.5).
This thing is really getting me down. Anybody have any other ideas?

  • Airport connecting but no internet connection

Hi there I've been searching the forums and I have seen that this is a common issue.
My airport connects to my router with a strong signal, however when I go to use any of my three browsers, not a single one is capable of connecting to the internet. However Skype (on Mac) and Bootcamp connects and works fine. No settings on the Mac or router have been changed and no amount of router resets will correct this.
Does anyone have a solution to this? It is getting tiresome to constantly change to windows to get internet access
    Thanks in advance
    Lindsey

Open System Preferences->Network and find your connection named "Airport". In the right column hit the "Advanced" button in the bottom right hand corner. In the drop-down select "DNS" and put either OpenDNS.com (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) in the DNS settings and hit apply. See if one of those helps and you can tell this by opening /Applications/Utilities/NetWork Utility and see if you can ping apple or Google by the DNS (www) name with it. This way you can see if the it works.

  • Can anyone explain why airport connects but no Net connection?

greetings all, i have a small and what i hope is an easy problem to solve..
my parents have wi-fi as well as my brother in his home, all i do on my macbook pro is turn airport on and it connects seemlessly..and i'm on google in 2 sec's...
but WHEN i go to my brothers house.. airport finds the network and jumps on it instantly and i have full service strenght. but no matter what i can't connect to any web pages,, they time out and i get a msg stating that i'm not connected to the internet... i eve tried my email prgram and nothing..all other net app's fail too..
how can this be if airport is finding the network? neither my parents nor brother have their network protected i.e. no WAP or WEP ect... so what is the deal?
even tho i'm connected on airport its like i'm not.. my brother has linksy's router and his sony viao jumps on it wit no problem at all!
anyone have any ideas or what i can do?
    oNe
p.s. at my home which is an apartment there are several "open" networks and again the macbook finds them and jumps on them wit no problem... but i stick to my plug in net connection for security reasons...can't trust open networks.. sides my parents and brother i guess..
macbook pro 17" pimp ish   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   it came stock..

I wish that was the answer, but it doesn't seem to be the case. I have a Linksys wireless router in my office with no other users and no security provisions installed. Most days, I can bring my Laptop in and connect right away. Other days, like today, it simply will not connect, despite having a full four bars showing. If I go into Internet Connect, it confirms that I am connected to Linksys. However, when it fails to open any Internet page, I get the terrible message "You Are Not Connected to the Internet." I am then prompted to open "Network Diagnostics" to solve the problem, which it never does. Obviously, someone needs to introduce "Internet Connect" to "Network Diagnostics" since they clearly have never met.
I have experienced this situation in other locations, so it clearly is not limited to the one router. While I am ordinarily a big Mac fan, this problem drives me stark raving mad. Being a simple person, I just cannot fathom how a computer can be connected to the Internet, but...not...connected...to...the...Internet. Since I don't own any firearms, shooting my computer is out of the question and I don't really want to hurl it into the ocean. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

  • Airport connects but no internet connection.

I'm at university and have my iMac connected to the internet using the ethernet cable with internet sharing turned on so I can use my Macbook at the same time.
It has worked fine up until yesterday when an exclamation mark kept appearing in on the AirPort icon on my Macbook. Today the exclamation mark has gone and it has a full signal, but when I try to visit a website it says "You are not connected to the internet.". The internet on my iMac is still working fine. Any ideas how to fix it?

Try pinging your iMac, and then another computer on the school's network. Also try pinging an outside IP address (you can just make up a couple).

  • AirPort Connected But To Who?

Just purchased my MacBook 2.0 and so far so great, but I'm a little ignorant when it comes to networking and internet configurations. As soon as I turned my book on, I was connected to the internet according to AirPort and could surf the web without any issues. Now, I'm assuming that I may be picking up on someone else's connection in my area (set on default). Is there a way to know where this signal is coming from? Also, how can I assure that I'm not using this persons bandwidth?

I'm assuming you don't have a wireless network at your house? If you don't already see the Airport icon in your menubar, open the Network Control panel (System Preferences) and in the Show pop up menu select Network Status. (I think it will automatically pop open there.) Select Airport and then click on configure. At the bottom you'll see "Show Airport status in menu bar".
Now click on the airport icon (the one with the bars) and look at the item that is checkmarked. That is the name of the network you are connected to. Some people identify themselves by name or nickname so you might recognize the owner. Then again you might not.
How do you avoid using their bandwidth? Get an ISP and connect to it.

  • AirPort connected but Safari says buffer space exhausted

    hi.
I just started my MacBook pro and it connects fine to my AirPort Network. But in Safari I can not open any page. It tells me the buffer space is used up nsposixerrordomain:55. Does anyone know what that means and what I can do about it?
    thanks in advance

I had the same issue after I Stopped my Mac from Syncing and Deleting the Mac from the Sync list. I tried everything and ended up reinstalling. I wished I had known of the Cocktail fix before I Clean Installed my OS! On a positive note , after reinstalling everything its seems much snappier after the effort. This was the same debacle I was in when I Upgrade Installed in the first place. A Reinstall with Preserve settings yielded no fix, so I clean Installed no migration and all is well. When I checked my Network Assistance, It had all the Green lights on and reported a working connection.
Before I did all that I tried reinstalling 10.5.1 update on the hope that would replace the 'damage'. Sheesh All I needed was to fire up Cocktail? OMG Definite bug somewhere here...

  • Airport connects but not receiving an IP

    Hi guys,
Recently I haven't been able to use the internet using airport (wireless), it seems to connect fine, i.e., the airport bars turn black. However I don't get an IP, not even a local one.
I know there's nothing wrong with the router because other macs connect to it just fine.
Anyone have any ideas on what's wrong?

Just curious, is everyone here running Leopard. I never had these problems until Leopard. Now, I've got the same problem using my home network (FIOS) and recently while on vacation. I called AppleCare and they were zero help. They blamed it on the router and said they didn't support the Verizon ActionTec router. Fast forward a few weeks and I'm having the same issue while on vacation. I've seen solutions here mentioning a change in encryption. This network has no password, so that fix doesn't work. I deleted the connection, turned off Airport and then rebooted. I enabled Airport and then it found the connection. Right now, it seems like it's hit or miss with connections. Not very good for me considering I rely on my internet connection for business. Not happy.

  • Airport connected but internet not working!

My airport will say that it is connected to the internet and will sometimes pull up an IP address, but at my home network it will not pull up an IP address.  I can connect to the internet through Safari while the airport has an IP address and it will work for about 30 seconds to a minute.  If I shut off the airport then turn it back on, it works again shortly.  At home, I have deleted the keychain for the home network and taken the network off of my preferred networks.  I then re-added it and entered in the information/passwords.  There is still no IP address despite renewing the DHCP lease.  HELP!  This seems like 2 issues that are both affected by my airport functionality.

After looking at other forums, it seems that other people have this same problem with the message of a "self assigned IP address" but not able to connect.
I have tried the steps of removing the keychain and network and re-adding and still no internet.

  • Airport connected but no internet - why?

All of a sudden I can no longer wirelessly connect to the internet, although airport is connected and the signal is full. There doesn't seem to be any reason for this.
I was wondering if anyone had a fix for this!

Sounds like your not getting an IP address from your modem. I would start by powering your modem and router. Restart the modem and wait for it to connect to the internet. Then, restart the router.

  • Airport connects but won't transfer data

I've got the latest macbook pro and it's been working flawlessly since release. However just today inexplicably Airport has stopped working. When I go to network diagnostics, under Network Status i get a Failed status for "Internet" and a Failed status for "Server".
I've restarted, disabled/enabled several times. I really have no idea how this could have happened. The problem is definitely not physical-- when I run win7 in boot camp the wireless works just fine. Is it possible for me to reinstall the airport drivers?

    no definitely not
as i said, it works fine when running win 7 in boot camp. Also all other computers in household use wireless just fine.
it's just my installation of osx, and it's just wireless. if i connect with an ethernet cable it works fine.
