Airport connects to wireless network, can't get on internet

Hi All -
Having a weird problem. Set up new high speed wireless at home (ATT/Yahoo with a 2wire wireless router. Had NO problem setting up my MacPro (wired ethernet), MacBook (airport) and my wife's PC (I know, she's switching as soon as we can).. but for some reason my older Dual G4 with an Airport Card will NOT connect.
The Airport seems to connect to the Wireless network NO problem. I enter the WEP password and I am in as far as Airport is concerned. But it won't connect to the internet.
I tried like all the other machine to go into Network/Airport and set it up for DHCP just like all the other machines, however it gives a message in Network Status:
"Airport is connected to the Network 2WIRE900. Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to cnnnect to the internet"
When I go to show Airport, and choose "Using DHCP (like all the other comps) it has an IP that is not in the range of what is assigned by the router.. I never put that IP there, so I have no idea. I have tried to renew the lease, change to manual, then switch back to DHCP, etc. All to no avail.
It also does not show the Router IP address either..
I am really stuck and at a standstill as this Mac not only can't get online, but it has 3 500GB drives full of info I need to access from my other Macs.
Any Help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Duane,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, wireless mode is set to 802.11b/g
I did not enable a MAC list. I see that option on the router but am unsure of if I should enable it or how to do so.
It says:
Tip: To discover new devices to be added, disable the MAC Filtering feature for one minute, then refresh this page. Once new devices are listed, re-enable the MAC Filtering feature and modify the list below.
You can also add a MAC address manually.
As I stated, I setup my MacBook with no problems. It immediately recognized the network and turning on DHCP the router assigned it an IP without a problem.
Thanks,
Steve

I'm really hoping that someone can help. I bought my Ipad yesterday but am unable to connect to the internet. I have connected to my WiFi and have full signal strenght but when I go on Safari it tells me that I'm not connected. I have tried changing some of my settings but can only get as far as the message 'Cannot open page - Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding' I also have the same problem with my Iphone and Ipod touch, I have never tried to sort these as don't need the internet on them. I have tried updating my Itunes and Ipad, both are now fully updated. My internet is working fine on any computer that is not apple... Please help, im pulling my hair out here.
    Many thanks

What do you see if you go to Settings > WiFi and touch the ">" next to your network name?
If you touch the ">" you will get the details of your network connection. Things like the type of IP address allocation (DHCP, Static, Bootp), assigned IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router address, DNS addresses, etc.
Please report what you see there.
Also please identify the make, model and type of router you have.
Do you know what kind of security you are using on your router? None, WEP, WPA, WPA2?
When you said, "I have tried changing some of my settings", what did you do?

  • Wireless Network - can't connect!!

Lenovo N 3000 running Windows Vista Business
    Product 0769A64
I can't connect to wireless internet. Am at the end of my tether and hope it's something simple!
This is what's happening so far...
Using Access Connections, I can use the wireless radio to find the network I want. It's a public wireless connection (in a library). It has signal strength of 60%. This has been more than fine for me in the past. Everyone else is using it so why can't I!?!?!
When I try to connect through Access Connections, I get the following message:
Unable to connect to the selected wireless network. You may need to configure your system to support the authentication method that is in use. Do you want to configure now?
I click Yes, (don't really know what I'm doing at this point so just OK out of that window)
Then it tries to connect. It then goes through Applying wireless settings - OK, then when it says 'waiting for association, it fails.
If I connect through networks, I can connect to the local network only, but not the internet.
What I've tried to fix it (don't even know if any of this is relevant...):
Made sure it's automatically setting IP address.
    Switched off Windows Firewall
    Boot in safe mode.
Checked the network adapter and it is working properly and has up to date drivers.
In Control Panel- Network connections, under Wireless Network Connections, I've disabled/enabled TCP/IPv6 and TCP/IPv4 in various combinations.
Thought I may as well let the cat have a go at fixing it after all that lot.
    Run command prompt as administrator.
ipconfig /release shows: No operation can be performed on Wireless Network connection while
    it has its media disconnected
    ipconfig /all shows:

Then a load of stuff about Tunnel adapters - *6, *7 and *9 are discomnnected. Apparently.
Tried to run PC Doctor on the network card and it passed the following tests:
    PCI Express Status Test
    Wireless Connectivity Test
    Wireless signal Strength Test
    Network Link Test
But it couldn't run the :
    TCP/IP Network Communication Test
Any help at all would be incredibly gratefully received!!
    Thanks, Claire.

I just purchased a Thinkpad from Lenovo with the Intel 5100 AGN wireless card in it. I kept losing my connection to the Internet. I searched on the web for a solution and tried a number of the suggestions, one of which solved one problem (access connections was turning off the wireless radio during inactivity to "save power"), but the problems persisted, even after I let Windows manage the connections.
The first symptom I noticed was that Windows could not find any networks. The next one I noticed was that the signal strength would drop very low. I even saw that when the laptop was 2 feet away from the router.
I finally came to the point where I was suspecting the Intel 5100 AGN itself. I have 2 other computers that use my wireless router and they have no problems, and people have come over with laptops and have not had any problems.
The router I have is D-Link Di-624 Xtreme-G. It seems to work just fine. I reconfigured the router to not use its Super-G mode. That appears to have eliminated the problem. It is still too early to be sure since the problem is intermittent, but it has stayed connected for a day now (whereas I used to lose the connection frequently in any given day).
I can't say for sure if the problem is with the 5100 AGN card, but I suspect it is. Given that I have never had this kind of problem with other computers (with varying cards) but only with this new one, the culprit seems to be the Intel 5100 AGN.
There are a lot of posts on the web about this very problem and no one seems to have found the answer.
I may have fixed the problem within my home by reconfiguring the router, but I can't do that for other routers (eg in a coffee shop). Other people have "solved" the problem by buying a new router (an expensive solution). The real fix has to be in the 5100 AGN itself, either a better driver (I have the latest version 12.1.0.14), or some card configuration (or else somehow replace it with a better wireless card).

  • Can not connect to wireless networks with ipad 2

My ipad used to connect to the wireless net at home and in public areas.
Now all by the sudden it can't "see"  the network.
Message: " could not connect to wireless network"
I have tried "everything" also on different networks,
    except resetting the modem.
My iPhone works, as do all my other computers.
    Modem is Zyxel P2812

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Multiple devices can't connect to wireless network

I currently have a WRT54G v5 router hooked up to a comcast cable modem and a dell desktop computer.  I'm able to get onto the internet fine through the wired desktop and through one wireless device. The problem happens when I try to use another laptop on the same wireless network. Everyone get's kicked off. Can anyone help me with this or help me find a solution on the website? I'm about to pull my hair out trying to figure it out!
    Thanks in advance!!

ON both your Win 7 computers, disable IPv6 under LAN properties for both the wired and wireless adapters.  Reboot computers and connect again and test.

  • Can an Airport extend a wireless network and support a USB printer at the same time?

Can an Airport extend a wireless network and support a USB printer at the same time?

Yes, if the AirPort Express is extending the wireless signal produced by another Apple router. The Express cannot wirelessly extend a network produced by a non-Apple router.
In addition to extending the network and connecting a printer, AirPlay can also be enabled on the AirPort Express, with all services operating simultaneously.
Please note that only the print function will work if you connect an All-in-One type device to the USB port on the Express. Advanced features like copy, scan, mainentance, etc are not supported when an All-in-One device is connected to the USB port on an AirPort router.

  • Can I connect to wireless networks far away?

How do I connect to wireless networks further away?
Is there a way I can improve my laptops wireless range so I can connect to wireless networks further away?

    Hi!
You can only connect to wireless networks that the notebook recognizes. If the notebook recognizes a wireless network, you can connect to them. If it doesnt recognize (because it is further away) you can not connect.
Furthermore you can not improve the wireless range from the laptop. You can do this on a WLAN router, not on the notebook.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Assuming this is not the first time you have used your Apple TV
You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Also try restarting the router.
If the problem persists, try a restore, you may want to try the previous procedures several times before doing this.
If restoring from the Apple TV doesn't help, try restoring from iTunes using a USB cable.
If this is a new Apple TV, in addition to trying the above, it may also be that your network router is not allowing access to the timeserver, check that your router allows access over port 123.

If you want to extend, using wireless only, the 802.11g Express doesn't support this.
However, if you want to use bridge mode over Ethernet or Powerline adapters then this is supported.

  • How can I set up a home wireless network with Comcast high speed internet?

I just signed up for Comcast High Speed Internet. I was able to get my Power Mac onto the internet. However, I connected my Airport Extreme and am unable to get it to recognize that I have an internet connection. I want to set up a wireless network in my apartment. Comcast tech support said that I only have one IP address.
Any suggestions as to how I can get my wireless network up and going? Thanks!

Should I change set up so that cable goes from the cable modem directly to Airport Extreme and then use the ports on the Extreme to run Ethernet Cable to Power Mac and other devices?
    Yes
As an aside, would this setup allow me to hook my iBook up to Airport via Ethernet cable and let it get into Internet that way?
    Yes

  • None of your trusted wireless networks can be found

    Hello there,
We just bought a brand new 20" iMac 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo last night, and we are having temporary Airport problems with it. We have updated the machine to 10.4.7, have run every single update in Software Update including the newest security updates, and have run the iMac SMC firmware update. So we are totally up to date on everything.
But we think we have discovered a bug in how quickly Apple's Airport software locates PROTECTED wireless networks.
We have a wireless router from Comcast, and we are wirelessly surfing the Internet just fine! Our wireless router works, and we're having no problems surfing the Internet. We have a 128-bit WEP security key enabled on our wireless network.
HOWEVER, 100% of the time without fail, we are having TEMPORARY Airport connection problems whenever we:
    1. Wake up the machine from sleep.
    or
    2. Restart the machine.
    or
    3. Turn on the machine after it has been shut down.
Whenever we do one of these 3 things, we get an error message that says, "None of your trusted wireless networks can be found. Would you like to join the open wireless network 'linksys' instead?" ("Linksys" is our neighbor's unprotected wireless network.)
If we quickly click on the Airport menu at the top of the screen right when this message comes up, we can see that OUR OWN wireless network is NOT listed underneath the Airport menu at the top of the screen.
BUT -- by the time we answer NO to the above question, when we go back to click on the Airport menu at the top of the screen, sure enough our own network is now listed there! It is there, after about a 5-second delay. So we choose the name of our own wireless network from the Airport menu, and then we're connected just fine! It doesn't prompt us for our password or anything, b/c our password is already stored in our keychain.
So there seems to be something like a 5-10 second delay before the Airport software can see protected wireless networks, like our own.
But it's driving us crazy b/c we have to go through this little song & dance routine every single time. Is there any sort of a fix or a workaround for this that anybody knows of?
We've already been inside our Network system preferences and have chosen "Preferred Networks" instead of "Automatic", and have made sure that our network is at the top of the list (in fact, it's the only one listed there right now). Yet still, the problem remains.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Scott

A couple more thoughts. Have you checked with the maker of the router to see if there is a firmware update that the router might be needing? (usually can be found at maker's online support)
WPA2 is a much better encryption method than WEP - check and see if you can set up the router's encryption method as WPA2. Refer to this other thread
    Cannot connect with WEP Encryption
I notice you mentioned this problem exists when you "Wake up the machine from sleep." I'm not sure it will help, but I have my iMacs set - at System Preferences>Energy Saver>Sleep uncheck the box "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" as that does you no real good to have it checked, and noticeable delays can occur due to that setting.
This final suggestion will not make a difference to your connection issue, but check System Profiler on its "Hardware Overview" to see if it shows:
    Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B03
If not, there is a system firmware update, Firmware Update 1.0.1, available here [the SMC Firmware Update was included in Software Updates, so you undoubtedly already have it installed]:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303903
For further important info about this system firmware update, check out my Aug 24 2:21AM post in this other thread:

  • Need HELP! connecting to wireless network; IP Address problems!

I am trying to connect to wireless networks using the AirPort built into my MacBook Pro. There are two specific networks I am trying to connect to, both are WEP protected. I know the passwords and can get into each of them but I cannot connect to the internet, which is the main reason for connecting to them in the first place! When I go into System Preferences and click on Network, I see that next to AirPort it says I am connected to the network but may not be able to connect to the internet because my computer has a Self Assigned IP address. I assume this means my computer is not receiving an IP address from the network. I am set on full auto with DHCP. So what's wrong? Please Help!!!

That indicates that the MacBook Pro did not successfully communicate with the DHCP server on the network. Do those networks have access control (MAC address filtering) enabled? If so, the best solution is to reconfigure the base station so that this feature is disabled. This adds no real security since MAC addresses are easily discovered and cloned.
If you can't disable access control, you will need to add the MAC address of the wireless interface of your MacBook Pro to the list of allowed clients.
