Airport creates its own network

I'm not able to share my itunes library between computers on my ethernet home network and my airport network, I think because airport sets up its own network (10.0.0.x). Is there a way to force airport to be part of my existing ethernet network, so I have only one network within my home?
Thanks,
Jeff

You can download AirPort Admin Utility, version 4.2, from this page. Although the old installer won't work, the AirPort Admin Utility can be extracted.
. Download the disk image named "AirPortSW42.dmg"
. If the installer launches, quit the installer
. Double-click the disk image to mount a volume named "AirPort 4.2 Update"
. Within the AirPort 4.2 Update window, ctrl-click on "AirPortSW.pkg"
. Select "Show Package Contents"
. Open the "Contents" folder
. Double-click the "Archive.pax.gz" file, which causes an "Archive.pax" file and an "Archive" folder to be extracted
. Open the "Archive" folder, the "Applications" folder within it, and the "Utilities" folder within that. The AirPort Admin Utility is there.
If you want to use AirPort Admin Utility's Help menu, even though some of the help may be outdated, you can also retrieve the AirPort.help file from the downloaded Archive>Library>Documentation>Help folder and move it to Macintosh HD>Library>Documentation>Help.
Discard the other downloaded files. (In particular, AirPort Setup Assistant version 4.2 is not compatible with Graphite or Snow base stations.)

  • I can no longer "create my own network" from the wi-fi menu (iMac 27 late 2009 OS 1.7.5)

In 10.6 I have been using the iMac to create a wi-fi network for the rest of the devices in the house. i.e. The iMac is connected physically to the modem  and I don't have to spend $100 on an airport !
I just upgraded to 10.7.5 and the "create own network" option  has disappeared from the wi-fi dropdown menu.
Does 10.7 no longer support this approach ?  My iPhone can "see" my iMac but since I cannot create my own network I cannot make a password, and therefore cannot give a satisfactory answer to the iPhone's prompt for a password.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

    HI BDAqua,
This is good to know - I actually found the right way to do this after much surfing around (and then received your message) - in system preferences > Sharing one can click "wi fi options" bottom right before you toggle any share button and set a password.  Why this is now here but not in the dropdown menu I don't know,
    Thanks anyway for your help,

In some folks' version of the world, you have plenty of ways. YOu have the aforementioned services, you have iCloud, all you need is an internet connection and you're good to go. And that works perfectly...if you always have the internet.
If you want more non-internet dependant ways, then the best way to let Apple know is to send them feedback. They don't monitor or respond to this forum (Beyond removing rule breaking posts) but they do at least log feedback. However, the lack of a file manager will always be an obstacle. There are some apps out there that have at least a pseudo file manager - as in the ability to move documents into multiple other apps. I have Readdle Docs which I can use to download and move things around with, but again, back to the internet or wireless.

  • Printing on HP LaserJet P1102w from iPad2 via AirPrint: is printer supposed to have its own network?

Or is printer meant to have its own network? When I want to print, I have to disconnect my iPad2 from my 'Belkin54g' home WiFi network & connect it to the 'HP-Print-4F-LasetJet 1102' network that is listed (under 'Choose a Network' on my iPad2's Settings/WiFi page).
Once the printing has finished, I need to re-connect my iPad2 back to my Belkin WiFi network.
iPad2 shows the printer has/is on its own separate distinct WiFi network & my WiFi/Internet Router/Access Point is on its own one; both show up as such ("'HP-Print-4F-LasetJet 1102" for the printer & "Belkin54g" for the WiFi).
Please can anyone advise me if this is correct, or if I have set it up incorrectly?
And if so, where/how I would need to change this? I was going to have a look in the web-page based Config pages for the printer & my router.
Any help/advice would be gratefully received. It seems to take ages for my iPad2 to reconnect to the WiFi router once I finish printing (upto 20mins, which makes printing very time consuming, although this is probably a separate issue in itself!).
    Thanks, Si.

    Hi simonbond,
I understand you have a new router and are unable to setup the printer on the new network.
    Thank you for your reply.
I will be happy to help you with this.
I would reset the printer first to clear out any previous network settings.
Turn the printer off, hold down the wireless button and cancel (x button) while turning the printer back on and don't release the two buttons until the printer stops making noise.
Print out a configuration report and make sure the SSID and IP address are cleared. (hold down the x button and when the printer makes a noise let go)
After the reset, disconnect the routers power cable, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the power cable. Wait till it's ready.
Since the software is already installed then I would setup the wireless again by connecting the printer by USB to the computer.
Then go to start, all programs, HP, Laserjet, wireless configuration wizard, follow the steps to setup the wireless. When finished remove the USB cable.
    Then try and print.
    Hope this helps.

  • Will Apple Create Its Own Version Of 2-Step Verification For Apple Services?

I create strong passwords which include numbers, upper and lower case letters, !? and other allowed symbols.  However, even with good passwords, key-logger programs and other methods can be used to hack accounts.
Google has created the Google Authenticator App which is 2-step Verification.  It is very secure and makes external hacking as close to impossible as one can get.  I use it for my Google Products, including Gmail, Blogger, Google+ and so on.  It is an added step which can seem like a pain, but I really enjoy the sense of added security.
Will Apple ever create its own version to help secure iCloud, Apple Mail, iTunes, so on?  I would really like to see this as an optional security feature.

  • HP ENVY 4500 creates its own SSID on my WiFi network causing problems and confusion

I am finding this problem hard to articulate clearly and I can’t find any information on the internet about why my new HP Envy 4500 printer has set itself up with its own SSID on my WiFi network, but here goes :
I bought an HP Envy 4500 all in one printer for my daughter’s room in university, which has a WiFi network with WPA security. First I tried to add this printer to the room WiFi using the printer menu, but it gave an error stating that the WPA passkey format was incorrect, when in fact it was the correct password. So instead I had to install the printer using the installation options accessed from the HP website using her laptop.
This has worked, but it has also set the printer up with its own independent SSID called ‘HP-Setup-45-ENVY 4500 Series’. This separate SSID for the printer is causing some problems and does not seem to have any useful purpose. For example sometimes documents randomly will not print from the laptop, but if you then disconnect the laptop from the room SSID and reconnect it to the printer SSID, the documents will then print, but then you have to reconnect to the room's SSID when done. This is confusing and of course completely unwanted behaviour.
Does anyone know why this new SSID called ‘HP-Setup-45-ENVY 4500 Series’ has been set up for the printer please? Can I get rid of it so that printer is simply a device connected on the WiFi network in the room please?
I hope this makes sense as this a very frustrating issue for something that should be completely straightforward.
    Thanks.

  • How can I create my own network in my dorm? (Using Airport Extreme + ethernet cable) (To connect AppleTV and Sonos successfully with no restrictions)

So I recently set up my Apple Airport Extreme Router in my dorm and have a BIG problem. It works and lets me do most things on my own network, but when I try doing things on my external devices connected to the network (Apple TV and Sonos Hi-Fi Sound system) the connection just doesn't go through. I'll give two examples.
After setting up my Sonos system successfully, I was prompted to update the software so I can use options that need internet access such as pandora and soundcloud. It just didn't work at all. It gave me an error that had to do with internet connection. I tried numerous times.
On Apple TV, I used AirPlay on my phone to mirror what I was seeing on my phone and then tried to play youtube, soundcloud, and other music apps and none of them worked.
My guess is that it has something to do with my school's restrictions on streaming or downloading. But none of this stuff is actually restricted so I know it must be due to the transfer of information between my network (which is connected to the school's network I am assuming, since my ethernet port is in my dorm wall)  and my external devices.
Honestly I'll probably get the "Your school has these restrictions answer", but I know there is a way to fix this and I really want the answer!!
    Thanks,
    Andres

You don't need the AirPort Express to do this.
You can set your Mac to share it's wired connection over the wireless port and the iTouch can connect directly to the Mac.
You could also do it with the AirPort Express, but you don't need to - it's overkill for what you've described.

  • How do I prevent fullscreen to create its own space or how do I create a keyboard shortcut to such a fullscreen space

    Hello,
In Mountain Lion, I could select from the dock icon the Options -> Assign To -> This Desktop to link back a fullscreen app to one desktop which allowed me to have a direct shortcut to my fullscreen app, e.g. ⌘3. In Mavericks this does not work and I cannot find how to disable the new space for fullscreen app nor how to create a keyboard shortcut for switch directly to that app once it's in fullscreen.
Any help would be much appreciated, I would hate to have to downgrade back to Mountain Lion.

The most typical solution for enterprise sites is to store their users credentials in an LDAP store such as Oracle Internet Directory (OID) or MS Active Directory. LDAP is an industry standard for extremely fast directory services over IP network infrastructure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightweight_Directory_Access_Protocol).
In turn some sites store their user credentials in databases tables. Of course databases can be configured for fast lookups too, but it is a database centric solution where LDAP is designed to work across networks and is ideal for servers as a result which live and breath on the network.
In case of Java EE applications and especially those written in ADF, the use of these services isn't written into the application, but rather the application delegates this responsibility of configuring and providing these services back to the Java EE server. So for example Edwin's post is about configuring a WLS "security provider" to lookup user's info from the database, and here is another blog I wrote for MS Active Directory a while back (http://one-size-doesnt-fit-all.blogspot.com.au/2008/12/configuring-wls-with-ms-active.html). The main advantage here is you don't have every application baking its own solution, rather WLS provides a standard well tested way to configure the security lookups.
In terms of writing (i.e. creating users) to the security store over reading from it, indeed you need to build your own code. Ramandeep Singh Nanda has a nice post on doing this with OID through Oracle's OPSS: http://ramannanda.blogspot.com.au/2011/09/opss-adf-security-utility.html
Finally what sites like Amazon and Facebook do aren't necessarily good examples to follow as they're application's requirements are typically far in excess of a typical enterprise site, and in turn have often written bespoke solutions to deal with their scalability and distribution requirements. I dare say LDAP is a good choice for 99% of enterprises.

  • IPages creates its own limited space text box

Upon opening a new document using the blank template, once we begin typing, the program seems to throw its own text box around the text. This "box" only utilizes approx half the page, and we can't continue to type. If we click outside the box, it disappears, but once we try to resume typing it reappears. There seems to be no way to resize/reformat it, or make it go away. What are we doing wrong?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You're typing in the header. There is no text layer in Layout mode as there is in Word Processing mode. You have to create a text box. Choose Show Layout from the View menu and you can see the header and footer. See my replies in "Can't Change Document Margins in Template" for a bit more information on the Layout mode.

  • TM by-passes external drive and creates its own (?!)

    Hi everyone,
This is strange: TM can correctly identify my external HD as a candidate, I choose it, and it correctly turns into the blue "Time machine disk" icon. All is good so far. But when I start the backup, TM spends some time "Making backup disk available" and it ends up creating a new volume that says "Time Machine Backups". The problem is that, instead of merging with old backups (yeah, it was working before, I don't know what happened) it tries to copy a new backup to the new drive.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

    MeMooMeM wrote:
This is new: I finally solved the problem by deleting MacBookPro.sparsebundle.dmg (or something like that, don't remember the name) from the HD.
Yes, those are the backups it made over the network.
But I would really like to be able to use mac#2 as a server. I don't have a time capsule, so I was trying to achieve wireless backup via the powerbook. I read that if the second machine is a mac and the drive is formatted properly, I am supposed to be able to do that (?).
Yes, you can do that. But you can't continue to use the same set of backups when you switch from directly-connected to network. Time Machine will start a new set, in a sparse bundle.
Are you also going to back-up Mac #2 to this drive? If so, it must be big enough to hold the backups for both Macs; usually 2-3 times the total of the data it's backing-up. And you should partition the drive, so TM on Mac #2 has it's own, exclusive space (see #1, 4 and 5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum).
Don't try to delete the existing backups in the Backups.backupdb folder; either erase them with Disk Utility, or if you reformat and partition the drive, that will erase them automatically.

  • Express sulks unless it has its own network

I want to use my Express to play via airtunes. I already have an Extreme base station running my network. As soon as I configure the express to be part of the network it vanishes from visibility completely including to the new airport utility, and to itunes. It will only appear as a station if I reset it (hard OR factory) then configure it to be a separate network - it then appears on both the airport utility and as a separate speaker set on itunes. This is a real pain - if I'm networked to the express I'm not on my home network and I can't persuade the express to join that without it vanishing. Any suggestions?

  • Oracle considering creating its own Linux Distro?

According to this article they are:
    http://news.com.com/Oracle+says+may+launch+own+Linux+version/2100-7344_3-6061696.html
If they do decide to create an Oracle Linux, what Distro would you like to see them base it on?
RH? [ a quick scan shows the issues RH has with Oracle's software right now ]
    Debian?
    Suse?
    Slack?
    Gentoo?
Actually, I would recommend they work with a from scratch distro and build it themselves completely, since RH is as far from being standards compliant as possible, Suse isn't a lot better.
Debian is closest to being standards compliant, but since the standard states RPM is the package manager and Debian won't downgrade from their own .deb system they aren't fully compliant.
Red Hat has the major Market share, but buying a bugware distro and fixing it would cost more than rolling their own from scratch would.
I would love to see a Company that could give Microsoft a run for their money backing a Linux Distribution, but I would hate to see that company saddle themselves with bugware to start with. I say that rolling their own is the best way for Oracle to go

One thing that could be done quite simply is to produce an appliance style distro.
Most distros try to be all things to all people (Server, Desktop, Laptop, Appliance). Oracle only need a secure distro that can run their products and a browser. No need for 1 million and 1 additon tools and packages. No openoffice or mail client. Just a solid server distro to run Oracle database and app servers.
I can see the appeal of that, and it's less of a threat to the other Linux vendors.

  • My iPod created its own password and locked me out, now I have to restore it, but iTunes won't restore it.

When I powered off my iPod Touch (2nd Gen) and back on, it created a password, which I never had one set. After trying several times, it has locked me out officially and is saying, "iPod is disabled Connect to iTunes."
