Airport cutting itself off

I started having this problem on my six month old MacBook recently and it's driving me crazy. For no discernible reason, AirPort will just cut itself off. And if I try to bring up Network Preferences to turn it back on, nothing happens.
It won't come on again until I restart the computer.
Anyone have any idea what could be causing this or how to fix it?

I am having the same problem. Started about 2 weeks ago, airport would turn off and would not turn back on again. Some days it will happen once, other days 2/3 times then other days work perfect. A restart use to fix it every time, but now, sometimes it will only last a few mins then go off again.
Any ideas ?
Thanks Steve

  • Airport Turning itself off after 10.5.7 Update

Ever since the updated to 10.5.7 my MBP is acting crazy with lock ups and airport turning itself off. The only fix I can find for this is to reboot the Macbook Pro and then it will work again for a few minutes before turning itself off. Any ideas how to fix this problem?

    Thank you for the link.
It's deliciously ironic that I'm typing this reply for the second time now because after composing it the first time, and failing to glance at the Airport connection icon first, I clicked "Post Message" and received "Safari cannot open the page http://discussions.apple.com/... because your computer isn't connected to the internet" and after refreshing the page lost what I had written (should have tried the back button first).
    Lovely.
As I was saying, I have little confidence that Apple will find or fix the problem in a timely fashion. Yes, maybe they will, but there are other examples (wireless keyboard and mouse connectivity under Leopard) where they took months or longer to release a fix, so I'm thinking I don't want to hold my breath, especially if this issue is only affecting a small portion of the population (I haven't heard a loud hew and cry from the masses).
I'm not looking forward to rolling back either, and given my current lack of free time I may reluctantly wait for the next update just to see if it addresses the issue, especially since after I go to the trouble of rolling back to 10.5.6 I don't know when, if ever, I'll feel brave enough to accept another OS update.

  • Airport turns itself off and cannot be reenabled

The airport card on my 2007 macbook pro turns itself off after a brief period of time of functioning and cannot be reenabled without a restart. In addition, my computer sometime freezes after restarting. I have had the card replaced before and recently upgrade to Mountain Lion and am still having issues.

Here are some things to try:
    1. Be sure that Airport is at the top of the list in System Preferences > Network. And, be sure that your preferred network is at the top of the list in System Preferences > Network > Advanced.
    2. Go Finder > Your HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration.
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to your Desktop.
    Restart.
Try airport. Try your network. Try your browser.
    3. Try creating a new location from System Preferences > Network and then deleting the older one.
    4. Create a new admin user account and see if it works from there.
    5. Do a repair install of Sno. Just install Sno over Sno as though doing an upgrade installation. Do all the networking/internet tasks at the end of the installation if possible.

  • Airport turns itself off

When I turn my computer on at home it will connect to my wireless network (Comcast through a Belkin router) for a few minutes, then all of a sudden the airport turns off. Trying to turn the airport on does nothing, and using the network assistant doesn't help (it says that the airport has failed). I can still connect to the internet using the ethernet cord from the wireless router after this has happened.
If I restart the computer it will connect wirelessly again and work fine for a few minutes, then turn off again.
The frustrating thing is that this does not happen at all when I am at work. It stays on wireless networks fine, and I've never had a problem there (so my technology support says they can't do anything).
Any ideas out there? I'd really appreciate it.

I have this exact same issue and it was driving me crazy.  I found this post and it looks like it may have worked although its still early to tell (20min).
hey i had this problem where the airport fan turned itself off and would not turn back on. i rang apple and they had me go to finder, macintosh HD, Library, preferences, and then drag the folder "system config" to the desktop. leaving it there i had to restart and see if airport returned to normal, it did so i had to put that folder into the trash. and it stays connected now...hope this helps, let me know

  • Curve keeps cutting itself off!!!

Ok so I have had my curve for about a year and three months, I absolutely LOVE my phone! BUT for the last few weeks i have been experiencing some MAJOR issues with it! I noticed that for some reason it seemed like my battery was dying really fast like, there would be 100% charge when i leave the house in the mornings and by like 7ish the phone would be almost completely dead! So like any logical person i thought oh my battery may just be old...so i went to the closest at&t store and got a new battery! things were ok for about 3 days until today!!! I had probaly about 90% battery life when i started a phone conversation with a friend, we weren't on the phone more than 10 min before all of a sudden my phone just cut off, screen went black and just pressing the power button wouldn't allow the phone to come back on! so i took my battery out and waited a few moments, replaced the battery and the phone turned back on and loaded up..i went to call my friend back and before i could ever press the send button i notice the phone was saying 30% battery life and then i noticed the red LED light came on and my phone cut off again!!!! I really dont know what to do...and i like my phone to the point were i dont want another brand but i am close to just giving up on my beloved curve!

I have been having same problems.  I upgrade from an older curve, and the new one just shuts off and will turn back on in a few minutes.  Well my ATT store exchanged my phone to another Curve and now I am having same problem again.
Well at the same time I bought my girlfriend a new curve.  After her second one they could not tell us what to do so they offered her a pearl to replace the curve.  Now her pearl is shutting off.
5 phones brand new and they all are shutting off????  What to do???

  • Airport Express Base station turns itself off

I recently had an airport express base station that died completely. Apple replaced it on warranty. Now my new base station behaves very erratically. After a while without activity, the airport turns itself off. The only way of getting it back is to unplug the power and plug it in again. This works most of the time, but sometimes I need to repeat several times or reset it as it locks itself with a steady yellow light and my computer cannot see it. I guess one could live with this if it wasn't for the fact that my DSL modem (Motorola) and base station are kind of hidden and difficult to access...
I have had airport express wireless networks for several years and this kind of behavior was never a problem before. The new base station has the latest firm ware, it was updated just a few days ago.

    To Apple Discussions!
Suggest that you post over in the AirPort Express Forums. It's where the AP users hang out.
"Now my new base station behaves very erratically."
I would give Apple a call first.

  • How do I stop airport from shuting off during use?

I am using an airport base station with a G4 1.4 dual chip desktop. Airport will shut itself off while I am using airport, the signal drops low, and I can see what looks like redialing activity. The airport icon will open and close at will. Some times airport shuts itself off completely, and I need to turn everything off for several minutes and restart. Sometimes the problem comes right back up.
Are there settings in the system software or airport software that I can change to stop this awful activity. I have inactivated the network prot connections for internal modem and for ethernet. What else can I do?
    Thanks.
    John

    Hello again John,
    1. I have the Extreme basestation
I have the Extreme BaseStation (with modem) too so I can give you specific tips about it. Which one do you have? The one with the built-in modem or the one without a built-in modem?
If you have the one with the modem: Do you connect the BaseStation's modem to your wall RJ-45 socket to have dial-up access in case your broadband connection goes down?
    2. The base station connects directly to a DSL modem
Make/model of your DSL modem? Is it a modem/router combo too?
    3. The G4 mac has the Apple extreme card.
    That's fine
    4. Airport is updated to version 4.2 -- it was the latest one I found on the Apple site for downloading -- I try to update when software update alerts me.
    That's fine too
    5. I have a couple of laptops in addition to the G4 and the basestation.
    Mac laptops / PC laptops?
I assume the laptops are also connecting wirelessly to the BaseStation?
What kind of wireless cards are in your laptops (make/model)?
Do you have any services enabled like File Sharing, Printer Sharing etc?
    6. I have been living with this issue for ever since I switched to airport a couple of years ago. I asked for help a couple of times before and was referred to airport files about troubleshooting networks etc. which did not work for me. Whenever the redial kicks in and shuts down something important I get frustrated enough to try and fix the problem, so here I am again.
Now we need to clarify the issue. The title of your topic is "How do I stop AirPort from shuting off" and here you state "whenever the redial kicks in and shuts everything down..". Since these descritpions are contradictive, tell me what happens:
Does the BaseStation turn off (ie no power) unexpectedly? [this indicates hardware failure]
Does the signal of your AirPort card (inside your Mac) goes low and eventualy the connection to the BaseStation drops?
I inactivate the network ports for the ethernet and internal modem and inactivated redial options in PPP or PPPoe. However, the redial option gets reactivated occassionally --I assume the OS is repairing what it thinks is broken and tries to make the modem work. I haven't been able to figure out which file is responsible for this redial mess nor how to stop it.
Where does the redialing takes place? From your Mac or from the BaseStation (only if you have the one with the built-in modem)? What is it trying to redial (dial-up net access number)?
Go to AirPort Admin Utility and click on the Internet tab. What's your selection for the Connect Using drop-down menu?
Finally to do proper troubleshooting, shut down every device on your network excetpt: the broadband modem, the BaseStation and your Mac

  • Airport Card Turns Itself Off (Macbook OS 10.5.8)

My girlfriend's Macbook has spontaneously begun turning off its airport extreme card. I can turn it back on, but it will only stay active for 30 seconds or so before it shuts itself off again. All of the network settings appear normal and I've tried a few basic troubleshooting things (like removing the battery and holding down the power button).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
It might help to reset the connection settings on that Mac using these steps one at a time until it works again:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    3) In the same panel as (2), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    4) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".
    5) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( not <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
They may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try. Before you try these, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them.
If that doesn't help, I'd run the diagnostics that came with that Mac. If that still doesn't show you anything, I don't have any more suggestions.

  • My airport extreme keeps turning itself off- any tips?

Every few hours, without my touching the comp, the airport extreme on my MacBook (OS v 10.6.8)  just turns itself off. Under Network Preferences, it just won't allow me to turn it on, and neither does the diagnostic work. the only way i have found to get it on again is to restrart the comp. Any advice???

  • AirPort shuts itself down during startup (possibly)

    Hi,
I was wondering if somebody could help me. I am new to mac and am having a bit of an issue with my Macbook Pro. Sometimes when I switch it on, AirPort is off. I am not sure if it was switched off (not by me) the last time I powered down the Macbook Pro or if it switched itself off durning startup. I went to the console, went to all messages under database searches and filtered for 'airport' but didn't really find anything that looked that useful.
Would any of you be able to suggest something to look for or a different section of console to look etc?
    Thanks for any help

You might try resetting your connection settings using the steps listed in this message:

They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take you a minute or so to try.

  • IMac turned itself off and won't fully turn back on

My iMac turned itself off this morning; all I was doing was typing, nothing intensive. It wouldn't turn back on.
I first got a wired keyboard and mouse and tried resetting the SMC. No success.
Next I took out and put back in the RAM (and it was unplugged). After repeatedly pressing the power button, I got a single beep out of it. I personally don't think it was high enough of a pitch, but I read that it might've been because the computer didn't read any RAM.
I might've again taken the RAM out, this time also unplugged. After more repeated pressing, the fans came on, but then dead again.
The third time, the fans came on and half of the dong played, but it was cut off.
The forth time the dong fully played, but a second after, it turned off again.
All of these times involved unplugging the computer for a few seconds and then repeatedly pressing the power button; I might've taken the RAM out all of the times too, but I don't remember now.
Two or so weeks ago, I did have a kernal panic while I was editing in iPhoto, and I believe it's the first for my iMac. About a month and a half ago I had a graphics problem where using exposé to show all windows caused the whole screen to become jagged 'shards' of colour (it reminded me of broken pieces of glass). While a restart fixed both of these problems, the graphic problems are not new for this iMac (though I had never had the shard effect before).
Two more little things that I'm unsure if they're related: last night, it turned itself on from sleep, but it does this every other night, so I don't think last night's special; and every time I got it to turn on, I felt that I had to give the power button just a short burst of force, as if holding it for even half a second wouldn't get it to turn on.
Does this sound like the logic board, or less expensively, the power supply? Since it attempts to come on here and there but gets cut off, what does that say with respect to the logic board?
The computer turned one year in August 08, and there's no AppleCare. Even though the warranty's gone, would Apple have any negative view if I opened it up to get my HDD? I can get the screen off with three house suction cups; my HDD was last backed up four days ago, and of course, I had just typed about 3000 words for a story I'm working on between last night and this morning.
And lastly, if I make an appointment with the Apple Store (two hours from here...) and they want to take it in, will they take out my HDD right there and give it to me if I don't take it out? Four days is so tremendous in this situation. I will not part with my HDD.

Perhaps. While I guess they're certified, I still trust Apple the most. Also, if it is a logic board problem, and it is widespread, hopefully this could be free. I don't know how a reseller would handle such a situation. I just want a file off my HDD!
I can confirm that it never really powers on unless it's been unplugged for at least a few seconds. So far, the longer it's been unplugged, the longer it stayed on. There were hours between the times I almost got into my account, and then the login window.
I again switched the MacBook and iMac's RAM, but doing this makes a senseless result. The MB's light simply stays on (no fans or screen, but when I turn it off, I do hear it 'de-whir'), and the iMac just quickly turns on and then off, as it has been after a 5-30 second unplugging session.
I guess this is the rebellion of a Revision A machine.

  • Airport Express turns off

Over the past week, I have noticed that my Airport Express (model MC340LL/A) turns
itself off periodically. I have it cabled to my iMac and periodically use
a wireless connection to my MacBook. I have to pull the power cable and plug it back in to restart. A pain if I fire up the MacBook downstairs.
Is there some timer or setting that turns off the device after some period of no connections to an operating computer?

The model number that you provided indicates that you have an AirPort Extreme, not an AirPort Express.
In either case, there is not a setting or adjustment that powers the device down after a period of inactivity. It should remain on 24/7 unless it is physically powered off.
If you notice that the symptoms continue, you should make an appointment at an Apple store or authorized repair shop to have the device and it's separate power supply checked for proper operation.

  • IPod switches itself off?

I've had my 20GB iPod for about 10 months now, but recently whenever I use the click wheel, to scroll through songs or anything my iPod seems to switch off, and shows the apple logo for about 30 seconds, before it turns back on but the battery has drained about 50% and the date/time is reset back to 1st Jan 00. After about another 30 seconds the battery goes back up again, but whenever I try to play a song it just cuts out again.
When it's freshly charged it seems to work OK for about an hour, then the problems start happening and it becomes un-usable. Anyone know what's happening?

I am having a very similar problem with my 3rd generation, 15-gig iPod. I've had it for about 14 months and it's worked fine up until the last month or so. Then I started having a problem - whenever I'd select a song (any song), it would shut itself off and not even re-start. When I manually restarted it, it was completely drained of battery power, and I had the same problem. Updating iTunes software seemed to solve it temporarily, but then it started happening again.
Is this a battery issue or a hard drive issue? I know there have been battery problems with the 3rd-gen iPods, but I haven't started having this problem until, conveniently, after the warranty expired.
