Airport disconnecting since I included an iMac Quad 2.67ghz OSX10.6.5

Hi all,
I have four Macs on an Airport extreme network. A mac mini (Intel), a Power Mac Quad with Leopard 10.5 on it, a Powerbook (old version 2003) and now an Imac Quad 2.67Ghz wit OSX 10.6.5 on it. When the iMac is connected to the network and goe sto sleep it basically looses the connection to the airport and disconnects the airport from the network (so all computers loose access to the internet). The solution is to unplug the airport and replug it and then all is good again, which is a pain.
When the iMac is shut, this does not happen ever. ANy ideas and possible solutions?

Hi there,
You're running an old version of Safari. Before troubleshooting, try updating it to the latest version: 6.0. You can do this by clicking the Apple logo in the top left, then clicking Software update.
You can also update to the latest version of OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion, from the Mac App Store for $19.99, which will automatically install Safari 6 as well, but this isn't essential, only reccomended.
Thanks, let me know if the update helps,
Nathan

This is generally a Lion error.. and you will need 5.6 utility to get access to the disk area.
So download the real utility. Run it instead of v6 toy version.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go to the manual setup, disk page and click on disconnect all users.. that will unmount all users connected to the disk and allow it to start working. But there are a number of other issues that are possible cause. Pondini lists some of them.

My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I tried unplugging the cord that connects the HD to the iMac and plugging it back in, but I still get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" below which are buttons for Initialize, Ignore and Eject.  I was using a cord that went from larger square plug to larger square plug.  So then I tried one that went from smaller square plug to what I think is USB (thin rectangular plug) of the sort that connects the keyboard and mouse. It's the type that my printers and scanners use to connect to the iMac.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. It's worked fine since I got the iMac 4 years ago. What else can I try before just trying to initialize and

Thanks, Michael!  I do hear it at times spooling up and running. Just after I bumped the thread I looked for troubleshooting for this drive online and found the manual which suggested using Disk Utility which I've seen before accidentally (if I hit Command Shift U instead of Shift U to type "Unit" on a new folder for a student's homework ) but had never really noticed.   Disk Utility does see it and also a sub-something (directory?) which might be the Time Machine archives on the disk, called disk1s2), sort of the way that my iMac's hard drive shows up as 640.14 GB Nitachi HDT7... and has a sub-something titled DB iMac, which is what I named my iMac's hard drive.
Anyway the owner's manual just shows the image under the formatting section, not the troubleshooting section, but as soon as I saw it in the manual I remembered seeing it accidentally a few times, went to it, and am now verifying the disk.  Right now it's telling me that it will take 2 hours to complete the verification, so I guess I have a bigt of a wait.  :-)
Does that fact that Disk Utilities can see it mean it's not failed, or just that it hasn't completely failed?
I can see the virtue in having multiple redundant backups, or at least two backups. What do you suggest?  Two external hard drives?  I had this one linked by ethernet, and but I also have a cord that could link it by USB (like a printer), so if this one is reparable I could get a second one and link it by USB.  If this one is not reparable I could get two and do the same thing.  I do have an Airport so I suppose it's possible to get some sort of Wi-Fi hard drive (my new printer/scanner uses only the network and not a cable, although it has a cable that I used for the initial installation), but I'd suspect a Wi-Fi hard drive might have a higher price.
What hard drives, if any, do you recommend? I seem to recall that when I was looking at external hard drives 4 years ago, Apple's were substantially more expensive, which is why I got the OWC Mercury Elite All Pro.

  • 12 core Mac Pro does not improve render time over iMac quad core

I'm rendering the same composition independently on two computers and they are basically rendering at the same rate, which is slightly better than 1 frame per second.
The project settings and preferences are identical in each instance (with the exception of memory and multiprocessing, which I have experimented with ad nauseum). The composition includes no motion blur, no effects, just a couple of layers of chroma keyed .mov files (using keylight 2.0) and some still images. Neither machine is running any other applications, except occasionally Google Chrome, which seems to have no effect on performance.
Both systems are running the latest version of After Effects CC (2014) and using the Classic 3D renderer.
    System 1 MAC PRO:
Mac Pro 12 core 2.7 GHz Intel Xeon E5
dual AMD FirePro 500D 3072 MB GPUs
    32 GB RAM
    OS X 10.9.4
    System 2 iMAC:
iMac quad core 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB GPU
    8 GB RAM
    OS X 10.9.3
As you can see, system 1 is vastly more powerful, and yet no combination of memory/multiprocessing settings can get the system to render faster than system 2.
It doesn't seem to matter how much or little RAM I reserve for other applications (I have settled on 4 GB), or the number of CPUs I reserve for After Effects. The one setting that has improved performance is turning OFF render multiple frames. And even then it only brings the performance of the Mac Pro up to par with the iMac. I have cleared my cache, rebooted the computer, and read everything I can find online regarding the optimization of render settings.
Here's a comparison of the respective CPU Loads:
    iMac
    Mac Pro
With such a low CPU load, After Effects is obviously not utilizing the resources available to it on the Mac Pro. What a waste.
    Can anyone help?

There's plenty of debate about the new Mac Pro vs a kitted out iMac.  Benchmarks show that some iMac After Effects processing can actually be faster than on a Mac Pro, depending on the content and some other factors.  If you're using software that has been optimised for the Mac Pro's GPU-centric architecture, like Final Cut Pro X, you will see great benefits.
    mac pro vs imac
In my own facility recently we opted out of purchasing Mac Pros this year, and bought top-end iMacs instead.  The benefit to cost ratio simply didn't make sense for us right now.  Mac Pros are awesome machines, but a significant component of their cost is the dual GPUs, which are simply no benefit to After Effects.
Reports say that the After Effects engineers are working on a major revamp of the After Effects processing system, so I'm betting you will realise far greater benefits from your Mac pro in coming AE versions.  For now, you may continue to see performance that is not spectacularly better than a souped-up iMac, depending on the type of processing involved.
I've seen a few benchmarks that suggest the 8 core systems give better bang-for-buck than the 12 cores.  Try reducing your processors to 8 in After Effects and see if it makes a difference.  With 8 cores, allocate 3GB of RAM per core to leave some RAM for the OS.

  • Since installing lion my iMac and powebook can't find my printer

since installing lion my iMac and macbook pro can't find my printer (it is on the supported devices list and I downloaded the latest drivers).
I called canon and they stepped me through reseting my print system and reinstalling the print drivers and libraries but I have tried direct USB and via airport and the computers dont recognise the printer anymore. Just to be sure it was not the printer I tried to print from my iphone and that works...
I have changed the usb cable, changed usb ports and nothing can get the computers to recognise the device. Please help all advice welcome!

    :-) here's an interesting link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#canon
Note: If you've haven't used Software Update recently on your Mac, please run it before connecting a printer or scanner to update your Mac's database on what software is available.
I would also do this after you plug in your printer. Apple might have updates for your printer.
there is Canon Software for lion. try uninstalling everything and starting from 0.
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/office_al l_in_one_inkjet_printers/pixma_mx860#DriversAndSoftware
I also read that if your printer shows up in your printer list before the appropriate drivers are installed, it might mess things up, if you plug in your printer and see it after cleaning everything you had done previously off, then try removing it from the printer list (don't just unplug it, delete the profile). And then install the appropriate drivers.

  • Airport Problem since 10.4.6

Ever since 10.4.6, I have had issue with airport. It always stays connected to my wireless network.
however, the internet will periodically stop working (happens several times a day very annoying). I have to turn off airport and turn it on again, to make internet start working again. This does not happen to my Powrbook and PC on the same network.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Sorry, this isn't a helpful reply, but I thought it might be worth pointing out that I have the same (or a very similar) problem.
I'm running a 20 inch Intel Mac, which prior to 10.4.6 suffered from that other horrible airport problem described under the 'Airport Speed Problem' threads on this forum. That has since been resolved by 10.4.6 (network speeds are normal). However, my iMac periodically loses the wireless network when I wake it up from sleep mode (I go from four bars to no signal). To get it back I usually have to switch off my airport card, put the iMac to sleep, power cycle the modem (cable) and router then start up the iMac again, and even this cumbersome routine doesn't work all of the time. I know this isn't a problem with my network because I have several other computers in the house that don't register any change or problem with signal levels or connectivity. My iBook, for example, which also runs 10.4.6 doesn't notice any change.
I'm surprised not to see more examples of this problem here, as when I spoke to a Mac genius about it, he said it was a 'known issue', though one more common to the Mac Minis. It has to be a hardware problem in my case. Maybe I need to get my airport express card checked out?

  • Airport Networking a HD-Dead 700mHz iMac

    Greetings:
My penniless home school would like to get Airport working on a donated 700mHz iMac with a dead hard drive by using BootCD. BootCD works perfectly, but I can't get it to Airport network. When I use Go - Connect to Server it always states "Connection Failed/No response from the Server." In Network pane I have a Amber light for "Airport is on but is not connected the a network" and the "Configure" button doesn't pop up the diagnosis panes as usually opens on regular machines. I'm wondering whether I'm missing crucial Network software that wasn't installed on the BootCD and how I can include it on a new BootCD disk, along with copying there the OpenOffice perferences on our Panther eMac (we store and run OpenOffice and its documents on flash drives, but the perfs don't work). Getting Airport working with this machine is very helpful because we just can't afford anymore ethernet cables at this stage. Any suggestions will be most appreciated!

If only the internal hard disk drive has failed due to wear and age, that could
be replaced with only a moderate amount of tedium, attention to detail, and
some degree of technical skill. The details are very important, though; so as
to not damage otherwise original wires, heat conduits, and other parts inside.

  • AirPort not connecting consistently on new iMac aluminum

Just got a new iMac. Awesome toy but with a couple of bugs. I am having the freezing (beachball) issue but the most anoying one is the AirPort disconnect.
I have a wep connection and when I boot sometimes it connects automatically, sometimes it doesn't. Other times it just drops the connection. Signal strength is always good at 100%. (router 10 feet away)
To re-enable, i have to turn off air port, wait about 10 seconds and turn it back on. 9 times out of 10 it works. If not I have to keep doing this until it connects. If I just try to connect to the network ssid, it never works.
Anyone else have this issue or know of a fix.

    try:
from the Airport (little radar in menu bar) pull-down menu,
    turn-on "Interference Robustness"
the next step would be changing the channel settings in the router from 11 to 6

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..

Depends which iMac exactly and your network setup, you can go into System Preferences and under the Sharing pane you can enable internet sharing from ethernet (or whereever you get your internet from) to Wi-Fi.

Is it normal that a Imac Quad doesn't boot from OS 10.5 ???

If your LaserWriter was connected via AppleTalk that is probably why you cannot use it with Snow Leopard. However if you can get it to tell you what it's IP address is then you can still configure it with that address to work in Snow Leopard as a network printer.
Also just to confirm, if your current machine came with Snow Leopard you cannot load Leopard (or any other earlier release) on it. Even if you could it's strongly recommended against doing so, if you cannot get the printer to work as a network device then my suggestion would be to retire it. After all it's at least 10 years old and probably older. You can find inexpensive lasers today that will far out perform your device.

  • Since installing Yosemite, my iMac isn't saving Notification preferences.

Since installing Yosemite, my iMac isn't saving Notification preferences. I know it's an issue, because I've seen it in other forums. Any help?

Here are the instructions I got from AppleCare from an Apple Engineer. I'm not sure if the fix was specifically for my machine or if it'll work for someone else. Follow at your own risk.
    1. Open the Library folder in your Home folder.
    2. In the Library folder, open the Application Support folder.
    3. Locate the folder named NotificationCenter. Drag this folder to the desktop.
    4. Next, open the Terminal application.
Copy and paste each line of these commands into the Terminal window, in order. Press return after each line:
    cd `getconf DARWIN_USER_DIR`
    rm -rf com.apple.notificationcenter
    killall usernoted; killall NotificationCenter
    5. Close the Terminal app.
    6. Restart your computer.
The notification preference changes won't stick until you restart a 2nd time after this.
