Airport disconnects randomly

Hello,
We just bought an Airport Express - which usually works perfectly. Recently, usually about once a day, the computer I am using to connect to the Airport will suddenly disconnect from it. Then - the base station will disappear from the wireless list. Then a few seconds after that, it will appear but when I try to connect it says it cannot connect. (nothing has changed on actual base station.) After a few miniutes (sometimes as long as twenty) I can connect again, and everything is all set.
I really like the base station, is there anything I am doing wrong?
THANKS.

Why hasn't there been any response to this?
I'm having the same problem with an Airport Express. The AX will seemingly randomly disconnect and has to be unplugged and rebooted. It's not just skipping, the whole thing futzes out. This only happens when we're using AirTunes that I've noticed. We have a Netgear base station that is completely open (no wep or wpa) and the AX is part of that wifi network. There are no other detectable wireless networks in the area and there is no noise interference that MacStumbler reports.
One thing I've noticed that takes down the AirTunes and Airport Express is using google maps while streaming audio via airtunes. I don't know what it is, maybe the amount of data incoming from the maps site that overloads the AX and interferes with it's operation. But it is repeatable ...
Does anyone have any ideas?

Len61 got my reply, I have copied below.
Hi - I have been on the phone with support 4X since late December - all good calls. They have been scratching their heads on this issue.
I have 2 printers and 2 drives on the airport -recent experieinces = printers have always behaved, drives have appeared / vanished / "drive needs repair" and it's just fine...
Cutting out the interim fixes, here are the simple but important solutions and everything has been stable for days now.
    * rolled back to AEBS firmware 7.1.1
    * replaced the passive USB hub with a powered hub ** This is when joy arrived
    * make sure your drive has a block size of 512
You can run guest mode however you want, since adding the new hub, it hasn't mattered.
I haven't been brave enough to upgrade firmware to 7.2.1
    cheers

  • 10.4.11 problem with Airport disconnects

I installed 10.4.11 some months ago and discovered that it caused my airport connection to disconnect randomly and often. The only solution I could find at that time, after reading this board and others, was to revert back to 10.4.10.
I am wondering if a solution to this problem has finally been found?
    TIA

There had been some user issues noted in the MacFixit.com pages, about the
time certain software updates for Intel® equipped Macs were being installed by
a certain number of Mac owners. While some of their pages go into an Archive
closed to non-paying members (they offer a free membership to post in forums)
some of their topics appear in Tutorials, of which some remain public for a time.
"MacFixIt Tutorials: instructional information of lasting value... mac or ipod - MFI"
    http://www.macfixit.com/staticpages/index.php?page=20031209121115375
Of these, ones pertaining to AirPort, wireless, updates, fixes, workarounds, and
helpful tips could be found under more than a few topic titles. I used to look into
the MFI.com main page, a few days after a major update or upgrade was available
to see if there were any user complaints about it; then see if they'd mentioned any
mistakes they'd made to botch their attempted installation. If the user's issue was
more than likely a user-caused problem, I'd go ahead and install the updates, etc.
So, a few updates may temporarily mess with what had been working fine; but if
an issue appears that does not affect a majority of users, in your computer, only
after an update which few if any complaints were filed (specific to one item) the
problem may have existed in another form and mutated or became apparent in
your computer after another major change in the Mac's system occurred.
The large Combo update, to take any (intel) 10.4 system to 10.4.11, is the one
to get; and security updates. Archive your stuff off the computer; wipe the drive
totally, and install from the ground on up. Or clone what you have to another
drive and have that as backup, to sort the mess out later; but you could get on
with your computing life nonetheless. Be sure to make a backup, and back it up.
The MFI and other feedback forums sometimes have a unique and questionable
cure or two proposed; if they are not too invasive, they are sometimes worth it. Of
late, more MFI Forum ideas seem like they were copied from Apple Discussions!
Anyway, issues with dropped AirPort connections were noted at some point and
certain security and other updates were said to fix them. Some should be avoided.
    Good luck & happ(y/ier) computing!

  • 10.5.4 does not solve airport disconnect problems

    Dear List,
Like many here I've suffered the following symptoms:
a/ Airport will connect to network without any problems, and shows 3-4 bars of strength.
b/ The signal will suddenly just disconnect for no apparent reason. Seemingly randomly as it just occurs without any identifiable cause.
c/ Attempts to reconnect will always require to enter the password again.
d/ The dialog box will answer immediately "connection timeout" when it seemingly hasn't even tried to connect
e/ Turning off airport then turning it back on seem to alleviate the problem, but still disconnects randomly about every 5 min or so, sometimes longer.
This is now the 3rd system update where this issue has not been addressed. It seems to me some process is trying to access the keychain or something and simply is denied permission and then returns a 'time-out' error. But as the code is not open source there is no way to know.
In any case this has got to be one of the most annoying problems I've ever had with an apple product. It renders the computer's connection to the internet practically useless, and with that most of the things I do with the computer.
Has anyone noticed any substantial improvement with the latest update? If so, what did you do? I merely installed the update.
    Hoping you had better luck,
    JJ +

    That would be annoying...
Clearly Leopards wireless is sensitive to some conditions that have not yet been identified properly. I know that some people experienced similar problems with 10.4.10 and 10.4.11 too.
Anyhow, I have compiled a list of actions from these forums that have been helpful to some people.
I suggest that you work your way through the list, and see how it goes. Given that you have a MacBookPro, you might want to pay particular attention to item 13.
The length of the list demonstrates that there is no clear single problem. It seems likely that there are a range of issues that have the same consequence, and the hard part is to work out where your issues fit in:
    1) Reboot in Safe mode (hold the shift key down whilst starting up). Login to your account and then restart again. Can clear caches and perform occasional miracles. This is a MUST DO trouble shooting step, even if it doesn't lead to an immediate resolution.
    2) Turn off IPv6 (Network Preferences, Airport, Advanced, TCP/IP), unless you absolutely NEED IPv6 (which is unlikely) http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7311903#7311903
    3) Do an SMC Reset. This under-utilised option has been effective for a couple of people on a temporary basis, but I have not seen a permanent solution out of it. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
    4) Remove /System/Library/Extensions/AppleAirport2.kext and /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AirPortConfig.framework IF they exist. They are remnants from Tiger or earlier, and not used in Leopard. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5684223#5684223
    5) Delete and reinstall the wireless network you are trying to use. Recreate it in a location other than Automatic. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7327200#7327200
    6) Use OpenDNS as a replacement for your ISP assigned DNS servers. (The IP addresses are 208.67.222.222 ad 208.67.220.220). http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7243133&#7243133
    7) Use iStumbler (http://www.istumbler.net/) to check for other networks on the same frequency in the area. Interference seems to be a factor for some situations. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7336681#7336681
    8) Change your router to Wireless B/G only rather than N. Or change the "RTS Threshold" and "Fragmentation Threshold" to 2306. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6597226
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6597226#6597226
    9) Change your the encryption settings on your router. If you are using WPA TKIP, try WPA AES or WPA2 TKIP-AES. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7336628#7336628
Some people have found that 64 bit WEP is the only solution that works for them - but this is only one step better than having no security at all. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7322517#7322517 (WEP is definitely NOT recommended)
    10) Check/disable your firewall and anti-virus software. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7327931#7327931. If it works, you can re-enable the software selectively.
    11) Turn BlueTooth off (it could be causing conflicts). http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7325696#7325696 and http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7387246#7387246. This is a clear winner for some people.
    12) Check for "conflicts" in the console (some people have found that Parallels networking was a source of errors) http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6933616&#6933616
    13) Remove Real Player from your system (this primarily seems to be affecting people who use a MacBook Pro). http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1549877&tstart=15
    14) Delete third party kernel extensions (such as tap.kext and tun.kext). If your Airport works in safe boot mode, this could be a clue that you have something to delete. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7307179#7307179
    15) Turn off your Leopard firewall in addition to some of the other steps mentioned above. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7409536#7409536
    16) Change your computer name on the network. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7378381#7378381
The last three are not recommended by me. I have included them because some have gained a resolution through them.
    17) Archive & Install to 10.5.1. This is not a solution open to those who have purchased their Mac since February 2008. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7367913#7367913. I don't recommend this, as there have been a lot of issues fixed in Leopard since 10.5.1
    18) Change the MTU setting to 1392 on airport (the default is 1500). This seems an unlikely solution... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7327455#7327455
    19) Restore an old version of IO80211Family.kext to your /System/Library/Extensions/ folder (this is potentially dangerous to the integrity of your OS, but seems to have helped some people). http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7296202#7296202

  • Airport Disconnects

I just bought a Mac Book Pro after using Windows/FreeBSD boxes previsouly so I am by no means a mac expert. I am not really sure when this started happening but the Airport keeps randomally disconnecting. I have upgraded the firmware on my router which is a netgear WGR614 v5 model, and the router is just running an access control list for security. I have the channel of the router on a seperate channel as all the others in range and the router is like 10 feet away thus I am not thinking interference should be a problem. I am not sure when this problem started happening but its only been a few weeks, before that I didn't have a problem at all. Since the time I noticed this problem I think the only software I installed was parallels which I have since taken off the machine. The only other software changes is mac updates. If anyone has tips or solutions, or can give me some debugging advice please replay.
    Thanks

So it's like I want to continue watching a movie from external drive and then player crashes because my hard disk partitions got unmounted...
I'm wondering if it can happen because disk is underpowered (it's connected only to one USB port because I lost my original USB cable which had two USB plugs). Anyway it would be strange as problem occurs also when disk is 'idle' so then the power consumption is also lower I assume. I can only say this disk was working just fine when used as internal drive. Any ideas?

Your recommendation to check cable was just - a good recommendation I played a little bit with the B connector and disk immediately stopped working. OMG it was so simple ;p Thanks. I have to buy a new cable (I hope the case is all right).
    EDIT:
Confirmed with portable mp3 player. Cable (B connector) is damaged.
I just won't delete this thread as it's a perfect example to show that basic stuff and simplest things should be always checked first !

  • M451dn disconnects randomly

    Greetings!
I have two printers over here, both M451dn's. One of the M451's will disconnect randomly from the computer. It does not disconnect completely, leaving the M451dn's printer object faded. Instead it creates a new "unknown device" and refuses to function after that. Every time it does this, it displays "HP Web Services" from its menu automatically. The solution (albeit temporary) is to restart the computer or printer, or replug-in the USB cable from either the printer or computer. After that the printer starts printing from the queue in Windows, and functions normally. It only takes a few hours of use for the printer to go back to its old behavior.
I have swapped power and usb cables. Reinstalled the driver, and even plugged the printer directly in to the wall instead of a power strip. Obviously,  I could test to see if it is the printer by swapping it for the other functioning printer. But, I wanted to post and see what HP's forum thought first.
    Thanks for your help!

These bugs should be related to both 5508 and 4400, pls. see Cisco's software advisory:
    http://www.cisco.com/web/software/Wireless/Deferral/Software_Advisory_6_0_196_0.html
You can try both versions to see if the bugs be fixed. If your problem still not fix after upgrade, you have to open debug(debug client xxx) in WLC, use some wireless analyzing tools to capture the packets and check what happened during the disconnection(always remember to use NTP to sync all the related equipments' time). And of course, call Cisco TAC.
Before that, you definately should do some site survey to see if there's any coverage hole, also do some testing especially with simple environment as suggested by George. For example, firstly choose open, no ecryption for the WLAN, no session time out, no aironet extention, no dhcp(using static IP), enable low data rate such 1M/2M, etc. then test it, if problem disappear, then add more parameters towards your final enviroment to see which parameter cause the disconnection. If problem still exist, you need to check Intermec wlan driver, call TAC.

  • IDEAPAD V460 - USB port disconnects randomly

    Hi Community,
I am in a trouble with my IDEAPAD V460, 59 - 044185 (4th one from the beginning) which I purchased around a couple of years back. It was working fine without this annoying issue until recently. This partiular model comes with three USB ports, two on the left side, one on the right side.Since around last 15-20 days, any device plugged into any one of the two USB ports on the left hand side of the laptop is getting disconnected randomly. I use an iBall 4*1 USB hub to connect one keybaord, one mouse and one modem to any one of the USB ports on the left side. Initially I thought it to be a software issue. But reinstalling the OS or even switching over to other OS did not solve the issue. To probe more, I refrained from using the hub and connected two of the mentioned devices directly to the left side ports. Still, the problem persists, but the frequency of disconnection is less. Sometimes, the devices gets reconnected, sometimes do not. That is also in a random fashion.
One of my friend having a Y500 model also having similar issue. As you can understand, given the number of USB devices we use everyday, it's hampering my day-to-day activity.
Two years being passed, I am out of warranty. I found that there are so many people around here also having same or similar issues. Presently, my perception is that those to USB are not being able to pull out enough power to maintain +5V and causing this random disconnect. Any idea what to do?

  • FireWire400 Drive disconnects randomly - Acomdata 250GB External - Help?

I used it with Time Machine and I also backed up files (movies, music, etc.) onto it which worked pretty well. I never formatted it or anything, just plugged it in and it started working. I use it in Windows sometimes using MacDrive - software which lets you access Mac formatted drives. I do this to transfer my Music to my Windows XP partition (Boot Camp) and things like that. Just recenetly (past 2 days or so) it disconnects randomly even when a file transfer is in progress. If I unplug and replug it, it sometimes fixes it. But other times I need to flip the power switch on/off for it to start up again. I feel like cutting the power like that must be bad for the drive. In my 2 weeks of ownership I never turned it off until I started having the issues, I just would let it spin down when I turn off the computer. I thought it got too hot so I let it sit for a while but I still have issues. I've heard you should totally unhook everthing (Firewire cable, power cable, then take everything out of your laptop (ethernet, Firewire, battery, etc.) and let them sit for like 30 minutes to get all power cycled and stuff. I'll try that now but can anyone throw me a bone? Please?

By the way, now I can't even get Mac to see it. I've turned it on/off, unplugged/replugged, what the crap.

  • GoFlex drive disconnects randomly after ML install

After installing ML, my 1 TB GoFlex, drive connected via Firewire 800, disconnects randomly and gives me the "The disk was not ejected properly..." error. Then it reconnects immediately. It does this a lot and, like I said, randomly. Has anyone else experienced this problem with an external drive?

Yes, I can't get any external drive (formatted in exFat and over 1TB) to come after installing Mountain Lion. My smaller drives like 250GB etc work fine but anything 1TB or over gets disconnected constantly or doesn't come up at all. I have tried to verify the disk and repair the disk in disk utility but it says it cannot be repaired. But the drive works fine on my Lion laptop..eh

  • FME disconnects randomly while live encoding

    Hello,
when doing a live encode with Flash Media Live Encoder 3 to FMS 3.5, the encoder disconnects randomly after 1 to 8 minutes. It takes about 50 seconds for the encoder to recognize the lost connection, then it re-connects. I tried to encode from different locations, but the problem remains.
Thank you very much for any help.

    I suspect the problem with Network connection;
If not tried earlier; can you try running FMS & FME  on LAN connected machines or (better) on the same machine; If it works fine that it would just confirm that indeed network connection has some trouble.

  • Handhelds disconnects randomly

these logs. I set the EAPOL key timeout ve retries to maximum values but still getting the logs.
We use like 30 handhelds. 7-8 of them disconnects randomly. The handhelds are reconnecting after 15 minutes which is along time for us. I have looked at the handheld logs it retransmits the key and gets timeout. I have tested the field with 3 handhelds while roaming. None of them disconnected but sometimes handhelds disconnects. Maybe this happens on same handhelds. I will look for it.
I have searched the forum but couldn't find any solution. I use agressive load balancing. WPA/WPA PSK for authentication.
    Software Version                 6.0.196.0
Any trick on handhelds or on WLC side that can be done?
    I found this article = http://intermec.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9432
Will try to set these setting on the handhelds. Maybe some of you experience the problem.

  • WRT54GS v7 Disconnects random

I have a problem, my wireless router has been disconnecting randomly for about as long as i can remember. i upgraded its firmware to 7.50.6 and it still does it. Most of the time that it happens it connects right back up within seconds but sometimes i have to reboot it (unplug and plug the power cord). Its getting very annoying because sometimes im downloading something or streaming something and it gets disconnected or when playing some games on my PS3 i lose all my progress and waste 20-30 minutes for nothing . it basically has normal default settings except it has a WPA Personal TKIP password. but everything else is set to default. When it disconnects it disconnects both wireless and wired connections. It happens to the laptop, desktop , and even my ps3 when playing online. Can anyone help me out ? Any help is very appreciated, Thanks.

Since you have already upgraded the firmware of your Router, have you resetted your Router and reconfigure all the settings on it again, If not then Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
Here are the wireless settings which you can set on your Router, I think this might solve the problem.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
