Airport disconnects when external firewire drive is connected.

Hi,
This is a weird one. I bought an external firewire/USB2 enclosure a few days ago which I paired up with Western Digital 320GB drive. I haven't used it a lot as it's only for backups.
Today I was having trouble connecting to my Airport Express network in Windows XP (Bootcamp). Well it was Windows so I just thought it was being flaky. Then when I rebooted into OS X I had the same problem. I thought long and hard trying to work out what was different and pretty soon realised it was the drive. I had it connected to back up the Windows partition. It seems that airport just dies the minute the drive is connected via Firewire (but not USB2).
It's an el cheapo from ST Labs, called the S-111

Anyone have any ideas?
Josh

OK. I know no one answered this one but I'm going to update this just in case anyone has a similar problem.
Seems I jumped the gun (a little).
I hadn't tried both firewire 400 ports on the external drive. I tried the other and the problem disappeared.
So the lesson I've (re)learned is that you should try every possible port/cable configuration possible before seeking help.

  • Cannot boot when external hard drive is connected.

    Hello everyone!
I got a brand new Macbook Pro w/ Retina 13" for Christmas today, and I've ran into an issue. I have a Samsung external hard drive with my documents and photographs on (and nothing else), and if I start up my mac with it plugged in, my computer hangs on the black screen (no Apple logo). If I leave it for 5 minutes, it eventually works. Also, shutdown is very slow as well. I've tried booting without it plugged in, and it works perfectly. I've ran the disk utility on it, and it reports no problem.
My hard drive's format is in ExFAT (previous Windows 7 user).
Booting in verbose mode doesn't work either, as no text shows up.
Could someone please tell me how to boot my mac quickly without having to disconnect the external hard drive every time?
    Thanks.

    Hi CellarDwellr,
My Samsung HDD uses power from the Mac (and I didn't have the mac plugged in when tried). I am going to reformat my external HDD to see if that helps (it's in ExFAT), as I need to in order to use it for Time Machine backups.
I'll let you know if anything works.
    Thanks,
    Kai
I see. Well, yeah, in order to use it with Time Machine, format it to Mac os Extended (Journaled)

  • Issues with time capsule back ups when external hard drive is connected/not connected

I have a 2TB Airport Time Capsule (ATC) (tall tower type) purchased a few weeks ago and initially wanted it to back up a Seagate FreeAgent 500Gb external drive (formatted extended journalled) as well as three Macbook Pros.  The Seagate has a single partition called Lib and is not used for Timemachine backup; it just contains my iTunes library and lots of scanned and archived documents.  I want the Lib folder to be accessible to all three Mac users in the house and I've set up all of the Macs to connect and back up to the ATT.  They can all see the 'Lib' folder when it is connected to the ATC.
After a bit of searching on the discussion boards I realise that the ATC will not back up 'Lib' when the Seagate is connected by USB directly and that ATT will back it up if it is connect to my Mac and set not to exclude Lib  BUT I am encountering some problems with this scenario when I activate time machine.
When I disconnect the Seagate by using 'disconnect' in the ATC viewer in Finder I shut down the drive before disconnecting the usb and reconnecting to the Macbook Pro just as a precaution.  When i connect and then activate back up using Time Machine selecting the ATC data folder, it is showing no previous back ups and never backed up.  When I had the Seagate connected to the ATT I was seeing back ups as far as 6th May when I bought the ATC.  I know that the Time Machine backups are not on the Seagate as I had to reformat it a few days ago and use Data Rescue 3 when I lost the ability to see any files on it after disconnecting it from the ATC.    I saw the 6th May backups in Time Machine before I disconnected the Seagate a few minutes ago so they must be on the ATC - just not showing after the Seagate was disconnected.
Can anyone talk me through what may be happening here and advise on the best way of managing this.  I'm already planning to buy another external drive as the Seagate is getting a bit old now and I realise I should have secondary back up.  I should just say that the reason for bothering with the shared external drive is so that we can all access the photos and household files over the wireless network using ATT.  I would just like it to be backed up with minimal fuss if possible.
Many thanks in anticipation of some help with this
    I

I would fix the problem by simply installing a more flexible backup software. Carbon Copy Cloner costs US40. And it is licensed so you can load it on all the computers in your house.
It can backup the external drive while connected to the TC, although if you are using wireless it will be sure slow.
Including the external drive in your backup with TM, is just messy. It will work.. and although you are not seeing the previous backups, they are there.. but TM cannot see them until it reconnects with the external drive in place.  Once it reconnects it will need to deep scan the previous backup.. you are going to find a simple backup takes far longer than you want. It is also difficult to recover from.
    See Q5 here http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
And several other comments in Pondini's KB will be helpful to understand. Sadly the guy who wrote it died before Mavericks came on the scene.. but it has more bugs than ever. TM has become less reliable for a lot of people.. and that is not doing any swapping of disks.
TM is honestly great for simple backups of your OS and particularly for incrementals but getting a clone of the disk like your external is far better for your setup.

  • Has anyone got iSight working when a firewire drive is connected?

I have tried numerous drives but they all stop iSight working. For sure I would not have bought it had I known this. It will work if I disconnect all drives. Irony is that the internal is so slow that I run off a firewire.

I have had problems with connecting an external firewire hard drive and isight camera at the same time. I have problems copying or reading files off my hard drive when my isight camera is connected at the same time. Just the other day, I forgot to disconnect my isight camera when I hooked up my external hard drive to view some old family photos that I scanned in and saved to that hard drive months ago. I kept getting a message that the files could not be read and had an error message. I thought that I had lost all the photos or had not scanned them properly or that my hard drive was going bad. Luckily I remembered that there is a firewire problem when my isight is connected and I disconnected the camera and was able to open the files. It would be nice if Apple could address this problem. I also have problems copying files to my idisk on occassion when my isight camera is connected. It tends to be slow and sometimes the wheel spins for a very long time. Also have noticed that when I copy large number of files at one time to a CD that things seem to never work right. I have learned to copy files in smaller lots and this seems to help.
I love my isight camera and it is so much better than my ibot camera, but wish they could fix the issues with the firewire.

  • MacBook Doesn't Wake Up (when External FireWire Drives attached)

Anybody else notice their MacBook not waking up from sleep when Fire Wire drives are attached, specifically through the FW port or the Express Card port.
Granted, the MacBook wakes up 50% of the time in general with nothing attached...kind of a crap shoot.

Hi, I have a macbook air for some time now. It works fine, starts reasonable fast and with one exception I'm pleased with it.If I closed the LID or press the on-off button the system sleeps. When I open the lid the next day (8 -12 hrs later) the system doesn't wake up. The log file which I presume is send to Apple did lead to a patch. I saw on the support site various conversations in respect to this issue with various results.
I see that the problem of James even returned and was not reported to be resolved until now.
In my log I have the following messages, "Sleep failure" of last few days. What should I do to resolve this, or is Apple delivering a patch for this?

  • Connecting DV camera via firewire disconnects external firewire drive

All of a sudden this has started happening.
When i connect my video camera via firewire to my external Lacie harddrive, and turn the camera on, the drive I have it connected to goes off line. A window come up saying 'Device Removal'. When I disconnect the camera, the drive comes back online.
I have 4 drives connected inline and it happens to any one of them, whichever I attach the firewire to.
I trashed FCP permissions, but that didn't help. I'm running FCPHD 4.5.
    Any ideas?
    PowerBook G4 15 Titanium   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Its the canon camera. Firewire and canon cameras apparently don't play in the same sandbox very well. All macs have only one firewire bus. For a macbook pro you can use an express card slot, but the imac's you are kinda stuck. The best course of action is to copy to hard drive and then move it within imovie. I read this in Tom Wolksy's book on FCE. It is weird. I have a Sony HDV and an older imac and i can use one firewire port for importing and go straight to an external firewire drive--no problem. However, in his book on page 56. It states the firewire issue. I know this is an imovie forum, but i can assume its also the same for imovie.

  • Blue screen of death when La Cie external firewire drive connected

I tested a LaCie external firewire drive on my iMac and it worked fine. I packed it up well and posted it to a friend who gets the blue screen of death when the LaCie is connected to her iMac. She's not even trying to boot from it.
My iMac is 9.1  and hers is 8.1.  We are both running Snow Leopard.  Was there some problem once upon a time with chipsets or am I mis-remembering?
    TIA

Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help

  • Boot process hangs if external firewire drive disconnected.

I have an external firewire drive connected to my desktop at work. Time machine has been working well until someone disconnected the firewire drive. I didn't notice that it wasn't connected, but what I did notice was that the computer would hang at the grey screen during the boot process. Sometimes, I shut down the machine and then started it again, it would boot normally.
Then I noticed that the firewire drive was disconnected. Once I reconnected it, there were no longer any problems. I haven't seen any posts about this topic but I have heard from other folks at work that they have had the same experience.
So my real question is this: if I set up my MacBook Pro (which I carry back and forth to work on a daily basis) to have Time Machine back up to the Time Capsule at home, will the MacBook Pro be reluctant to boot when I'm not at home and Time Capsule is not available?

Has no problem booting when disconnected from time machine

  • I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when USB.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when using USB external drives.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

It is not clear if these are the same drives, just connected
    differently, or different drives?
One thing that may be happening is that the drives firmware
itself is putting it to sleep when inactive.  Many drives on
the market have ths feature and it is turned on by default
and require a drive utility from the manufacturer to disable it.

  • Audio cutting out when using D2 external Firewire Drive

    Hi,
I have just upgraded to Logic Studio, using the following setup:
    Macbook Pro
    Motu 828
    AMT 8
    Logic Studio
    D2 Lacie 500GB Firewire Drive
As the MacBook's internal hard drive is not sufficient to record and playpack efficiently, I was advised to get an external Firewire Drive. Given that I have very little space on my laptop - (am running windows on a partition also) I am trying to save my logic files to the external HD. When creating tracks specifically using Audio Instruments, the playpack keeps cutting out.
I am connecting the HD via usb 2. I am also having to freeze the tracks in order to record more layers. There is lots of clipping and latency. I thought by using the external, this problem would be resolved.
The HD is not playing back the tracks fast enough, and keeps cutting the audio out. The audio cuts out everytime the blue light on the drive flashes.
I cannot save the files to the MackBook HD as there is notenough space.
Is there something very wrong with my setup?
any advice would be really appreciated.
ps. I am a bit of a newbie
    thank you in advance.

Connect it via firewire 800. USB2 is not good for audio or video streaming.
I have 3 D2's connected to my mac pro, works like a charm.
    good luck.

  • Panic when booting from external firewire drive

    Hi all
I have just returned from holidays to the following problem:
While I was away a colleague upgraded a PowerMac G5 from OS X 10.3 to OS X 10.5.1 . He also upgraded an OS X 10.4 installation on an external firewire drive to 10.4.11 while connected to the G5. Now suddenly the 10.4.11 installation on the external firewire drive will not boot when connected to the PowerMac G5 - it kernel panics almost immediately. However it will still boot when connected to a PowerMac G4.
Has anybody seen or experienced this? Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

My colleague has just decided to format and recreate the OS installation on the external drive.

  • Blue Screen Result When Installing To External Firewire Drive

I can't afford to have problems with programs not running on Leopard on my 17" G4 1.67 GHz 2 GB RAM PowerBook so I am trying to install it on an external Firewire drive. I was hoping to test out Leopard with certain applications by running it from the external drive.
The Firewire drive has two partitions, one has my backup clone of the PowerBook and the other just has files and about 35 GB of free space. The installation would be a new installation so none of the files that deal with login or Application Enhancer that are being talked about in other threads are an issue.
My first attempt to install brought up a blue screen after the installation restart. I left it there for about 30 minutes then powered off the PowerBook by holding down the power button. I started it again and held down the option key, picked the install disk as startup, went through the disk utility repair disk (found no problems). After that I picked the new install on the external from the startup preferences and it simply restarted to a blue screen. I left that one for about 20 minutes then powered down.
I went back to the Powerbook Tiger OS system, deleted all the installed folders on the external and tried a completely new install. Once again it went to the blue screen after the Leopard install restart. This time I left it overnight and this morning the display was dark and upon waking it up with a tap of the space bar was greeted by the bluescreen again.
I talked to my Apple hardware rep who knows the equipment that I am working with and we talked about all the steps I went through and he has no explanation why it won't work on the external.
I would love to hear from anyone that may have insight for this particular external FW drive installation perspective.

    Joe-
Is the drive partitioned to APM? (Sorry I took Anton's reply to be yours.) What was the type fo partitioning onthe disk with the success? I am not knowledgable enough in those error messages on the system.log file, but one thought is - after the memory upgrade, did you clear the PRAM (long shot, but do it anyway)? The machine booting on one external Firewire drive (#2) implies the problem is with the external FW disk (#1) you are using. Some other people had the bus error, but with Time Machine. (Not to go on a tangent, but TM seems to have problems when the disk name has non-alphanumeric in it.)
Hoping someone who knows the syslog errors and the boot sequence will pipe in here.

  • What to set when capturing to an external firewire drive?

When capturing to an external firewire drive that will also be used to edit the video, what do I need to set in the Scratch Disk window? Just the scratch disk? Do I need to also set the waveform cache? thumbnail cache? autosave vault?
    Thanks.

Depends on your overall configuration/workflow...but I'll usually set my external for Video Capture/Video Render/Audio Render. Then both cache files to my system drive and my Autosave Vault to the external...unless I have an additional internal or second external. I keep my Project files on the system/startup drive.
When you click on the 'Set' button, it's best to simply select the root of whatever drive you want to use. This alleviates the possibility of uncontrolled heirarchy of 'scratch folders' cluttering up your system. If you select the root, then FCP creates a "Capture Scratch" folder at the root level, and each new project gets it's own folder within the main "Capture Scratch" folder.
Setting your autosave vault somewhere other than where your project file is located, can save your butt, if your system drive (or wherever your project file is located) decides to crash.
Others may do it differently, as I do on occasion...just depends on what drives/Mac I have available at the time.
    Hope that helps.

  • Files corrupted when written to external Firewire drive

I recently discovered that files transferred from my internal ATA drives to my external Firewire drives have been getting corrupted.
The corruption is most noticable in Quicktime movies where I can see individual video frames with pixelated blocks of color and short noise bursts in the audio. My concern, however, is that it is happening to any file type and the corruption may not be noticed until it is too late.
I read a few posts from the end of last year that stated the Firewire ports of the B & W G3s have problems. The general solution appeared to be the use a dedicated PCI card.
    Here are my questions:
    (1) Is there a formal aritcle discussing this problem? (I didn't find one)
    (2) Copying files is a VERY basic function of an operating system. Shouldn't there be some kind of error generated if a copied file doesn't match the source? (like a checksum error).
    (3) If a PCI Firewire card is the answer, is there anything to watch out for when selecting one?
    (4) I'd like a better way to compare souce and destination files after a copy. What application can I use to do a low-level comparison of two files?
    Thanks,
    John

    John,
My reference to RAM was by way of example. Another example of error opportunities is in rebuilding the desktop. I have had files lost because of the desktop changing when the removable media or external hard drive is changed to a computer with a different OS. Rebuilding the desktop restored the files.
The guys that wrote Disk Warrior could give the brutal full on why files appear, disappear and get corrupted. I choose to not trust any one medium so I backup my backups. Sometimes a reliable routine is better than an explaination.
No one has responded to my inquiry about why jpeg files are corrupted when copied from the B&W to a PC zip disk but not to an external HDD. I should try that with a PC formatted HDD. The odd thing is that quicktime will read the corrupted file but jpegview will not. Or the otherway around. I have forgotten the details because I gave up on trying to get an answer.
I would be interested in reading more about file transfers during the process of burning a CD and how buffer underun technology works. As you said, the answer may be so detailed that the explanation wouldnot be understandable without becoming a text book!

  • How to reestablish connection to external FireWire drive with iTunesLibrary

Hello all. Here's the scenario I would like help with, please:
I currently have a G5 Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac running Leopard 10.5.1 and iTunes 7.6 . I have my iTunes library of tunes on an external FireWire Drive. I expect to purchase a Mac Pro soon. I expect to use Migration Assistant to pull files from my G5 over to the Mac Pro. Good so far.
Everything I've read about having ones iTunes songs on an external drive always starts with the assumption that the iTunes songs are currently on ones internal drive. In my case, as you can see, that is not the case. Given that I already have my songs on an external drive, that I'll have a new computer with things in their default positions (unless Migration Asst. pulls over my iTunes preferences including iTunes songs location), how, then, can I make sure the new iTunes app on the new Mac Pro "sees" where my music already exists?
Thanks for any help you might give. I'd like to be able to get iTunes working properly from day one on the new Mac Pro without iTunes problems.
    Wayne

Thank you Airsculpture. What you laid out is the exact procedure I have used in the past. For some reason I thought switching to a new OS on a new computer might complicate things further. Glad to see that is not the case.
    I appreciate your help!
