Airport Disk constantly hangs

It seems that I can only get a solid minute of connection to my USB connected disk on my AEBS. After that time any app trying to access the drive freezes and requires force quit -- sometimes the Finder freezes so bad that I have to pull the power on the computer (MBP btw). The drive is then totally inaccessible until I unplug the power. It seems like the AEBS puts the drive into a sleep mode because the power light on the front is still accessible, but the drive isn't making any noise (ie. no heads moving and no audible disk spin). This would make sense during long periods of inactivity but not otherwise.

You may have several issues on your network there.
First, can you confirm that your main settings look like this for your Time Capsule and AirPort Express using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup for each device?
On the Time Capsule:
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Make sure there is a check mark next to Allow this network to be extended
On the AirPort Express:
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your Time Capsule wireless network
Check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security and Password = Same settings at the Time Capsule network
The Tranmsit Rate of 39 indicates that the signal has degraded quite a bit where the AirPort Express is located. A good Tranmsit Rate for your network should be in the 100-130 range for good "n" wireless performance. A Transmit Rate of 39 would be OK, for a "g" wireless network, but not "n". Experiment using your laptop to see if you can find a better location for the AirPort Express that will result in higher Transmit Rates so the Express can work more effectively.
Assuming there are no major obstructions between the Time Capsule and AirPort Express, postion the Express a point that is about 1/2 the distance between the Time Capsule and the remote area that needs more wireless coverage.
The fluctuations and intermittent drops in Transmit Rate indicate that something in your home or a nearby residence is interfering with your wireless signal in that part of your house. It could be cordless phones, another wireless network nearby, a wireless security system and many many more things that are difficult to identify.
If you have any cordless phones, turn them all off for a hour or two and watch the performance on your wireless network to see if you still see the fluctuations and intermittent drops in Transmit Rate. This is what is causing your video problems now. The question is how to eliminate it.

  • Time Machine - Airport Disk Hangs after installing 10.5.6 update

The 10.5.6 update basically made my Time Capsule and Airport Disk connected to the Time Capsule unusable. I've repaired the permissions as suggested in other posts - this did not fix the problem.
I was unable to perform any incremental backups initially after the 10.5.6 update, so I archived my sparsebundle and created a new one by doing a full fresh backup - which completed successfully. However, after the backup, I was unable to connect to the Time Capsule or the USB drive connected to the Time Capsule via Finder - when trying to connect my computer hangs and I'm forced to do a hard restart of BOTH my computer AND the Time Capsule, if I just restart one or the other the problem persists. If I let the connection attempt run long enough I get an "Error Code: -8072" message and still have to do a hard restart. After the hard restart of my computer and Time Capsule I'm able to connect to the Time Capsule and the USB drive connected to Time Capsule just fine. However, once the backup runs again - the same problem returns, I can no longer access the Time Capsule or the USB drive connected to Time Capsule and have to do a hard restart of BOTH my computer AND Time Capsule. This 10.5.6 update has been havoc, anyone have the same troubles or ideas for resolving this. Before updating to 10.5.6 my system was working flawlessly with Time Capsule and the connected USB drive.

  • Can no longer sync Photos from Airport Disk

I can no longer sync photos from my Airport Disk to my tv.
This used to work fine- When I first got the tv I checked the "sync photos from" option in the photos tab in iTunes, navigated to my network drive/ pictures folder and hit sync. The photos slowly copied over.
Just this week however, I went to add some new pictures and iTunes/ tv no longer sync. The status bar just spins saying "Syncing"...I have left it overnight with no change.
I have recently updated to the latest version of iTunes and Airport Extreme firmware, but that is about it in terms of changes/updates. Anyone have any ideas?
    - Firewall is off
    - Permissions seem ok on the Airpot Disk. Everything is read/write
    - I have rebooted/ reset/ re-synced everything. It just hangs on Photos. Music etc go over fine.
    Specs:
    iMac G5 PowerPC
Airport Extreme N base station with OWC USB drive attached as airDisk
tv 1.0 40 gig - using ethernet connection to router
    iTunes 7.4.2
I am really stumped! I think that the airport disk permissions or mount are still suspect but dont know what else to check.
Does iTunes spit out a log or write to the console? Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    AC

I think I have figured it out, and photos are syncing now.
Here is what I believe happened: There is an iTunes generated folder called "iPod Photo Cache" in my "Pictures" folder on my Airpot Disk. This folder gets generated by iTunes whenever you designate a location for syncing. The "iPod Photo Cache" folder contains a file called "Photo Database".
It looks like the "Photo Database" had been corrupted. Deleting this file, or alternatively, moving my pictures to a new folder and letting iTunes regenerate the Photo Database fixed the problem.

  • Disk Utility hangs ("not responding") when attempting to Repair Disk on Time Capsule sparsebundle.  Help.

I am trying to improve the performance of my Time Machine backup and retrievals via my 2nd Gen. Time Capsule from my iMac Core 2 Duo hard drive with SL 10.6.8.  The incremental backups generally take 20 - 40 minutes each hour generally with fewer than 100 MB of data being backed up.  I have read through numerous threads on these forums about Time Capsule and Time Machine issues as well as the very helpful Pondini site (http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Home.html) and have tried many other suggestions (listed below), but have been unable to attempt a Disk Utility repair disk on the Time Capsule sparsebundle file.
After locating the sparsebundle 'file' in the finder under Shared/TC/Data, I am only sometimes able to drag the sparsebundle into the Disk Utility volumes and disk window.  About fifty percent of the time, Disk Utility hangs when attempting to drag in the sparsebundle.  If I am able to get it listed and click on "repair disk", then the beach ball begins to spin and nothing happens.  This occurs whether or not I first use AirPort Utility to "Disconnect All Users" from the Time Capsule.  I have given it over one hour to attempt the repair disk, but nothing happens, i.e., not a single message shows up in the detail window.  The beach ball just spins, and Disk Utility shows up in red as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu.
Also note that on my new Macbook Air, Time Machine runs quite quickly via this same Time Capsule from my new Macbook Air using OS X Lion (which seems to indicate that the Time Capsule drive itself is OK).
I would appreciate any tips on getting Disk Utility to run "repair disk" on my sparsebundle, as I seem to have exhausted most other options (see below) for improving Time Capsule performance -- aside of course, from wiping the Time Capsule clean and starting all over.... (which I really don't want to do, and from what I've read, has not helped some people who've tried this anyway).
    Many thanks!
Although I would like to focus this thread on the Disk Utility / sparsebundle "Repair Disk" problem, I should mention that I have tried the following other things:
    1.  Repaired disk permissions on my hard drive
    2.  Used Disk Utility to run "repair disk" on my hard drive after starting up from a SuperDuper external backup
    3.  Run DiskWarrior on my hard drive, again, from a separate startup disk
    4.  Did the "full reset of Time Machine", a la Pondini Troubleshooting #A4
    5.  Changed my computer and Time Capsule names to simple short names with only alphanumeric characters and no spaces
    6.  Ensured that my Time Capsule is being accessed only via ethernet
    7.  Relaunched the finder
    8.  And finally, attempting to use Disk Utility to repair the sparsebundle - thus the nature of this post

OK, no takers out there, but I answered my own question (sort of).
The answer is that even though Disk Utility shows up as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu and appears to hang, it is actually still working.  A bit of patience shows that after about an hour, my Disk Utility was able to show the 1.44 TB Time Machine sparsebundle from Time Capsule in the disk window on the left hand side.  Once this appeared, I was able to click on "Repair Disk" (note that prior to doing this, I had to "Disconnect All Users" from my Time Capsule using the Airport Utility program; otherwise you will get a "could not unmount disk" error).  Again, the Repair Disk function appeared to hang Disk Utility as it showed up as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu.  However, after about 8 hours, Disk Utility did run the entire Repair Disk protocol on the sparsebundle.  The results DO NOT show up in the Disk Utility details window - so even if you are patient enough to let it complete, you will not see anything and may think that nothing happened.  However, you can find the familiar results of the Repair Disk function by looking on Console - find the "DiskUtility.log" under Files: ˜/Library/Logs.
Unfortunately, I was hoping to find a problem that would have been subsequently repaired which would result in dramatically increased Time Capsule speed, but this was not the case.  Disk Utility showed everything to be "OK" and I am stuck with a very slow Time Capsule....
(And of note, my new Macbook Air (OS Lion) Time Machine functions blazingly fast on both backup and retrieval to and from the very same Time Capsule - even though, these are occuring wirelessly via AirPort -- granted the size of this sparsebundle is an order of magnitude smaller at this point, i.e., only 10 GB right now)
Would still be happy to hear of any similar experiences or tips on getting Time Capsule to work more quickly.

  • ITunes Library on an Airport Disk?  Read and write from multiple Macs?

OK, I've scoured the forums for an answer to this, but haven't found anything definitive. Apologies if I've missed the answer, but here's what I want to know:
I have an iMac as a primary computer, plus a Mac Mini hooked up to my entertainment system, and my girlfriend's powerbook in the house too. There seem to be two main iTunes options: either constantly try to keep all three iTunes libraries synchronised by running around importing files, etc.; or just keep one library, and share it over the network.
Right now, I am keeping my iTunes library on my iMac and sharing it with the Mac Mini and the powerbook. If anyone wants to add music (or other content) to the library, it has to be through the iMac. Obviously the iMac has to be on for any other computer to access the shared library.
I want to try to make things simpler by having a single "network" iTunes library that all computers to be able to share (read AND write). I envisage having this "iTunes Server" on an external HD connected to my Airport Extreme as an Airport Disk. If I move the entire contents of ~/music/iTunes (including artwork, library files, etc) to this central location, will the three Macs be able to deal with this, ie can multiple computers share an iTunes library database on an airdisk? Will I be able to stream content from this library to all three computers? Will I be able to import new music into the library from any one of the three computers?

I am having a very similar problem. I have all of my music saved on a large external disk connected to my airport. I would like to be able to just play what i want from this disk, but i don't like having to download every track i want to listen to. I still want to be able to bring my laptop with me and have some music so i don't want to make this external disk my library folder. Is there a way to play it on my computer similar to a shared library on another computer? Am i asking to much out of apple?

  • Can't copy large files to AirPort Disk Using Windows 7

    Hi Everyone,
I'm positng because I'm unable to copy large files to an AirPort Disk using Windows 7.  I have the following setup.
    AirPort Extreme:
    - Firmware version: 7.6.1
    - Airport disks secured by password
    - No guest access allowed
    - Airport Disk Preferences:
      - Automatically discover airport disks is enabled
      - Show Airport Disks in the system tray is enabled
    External Drive:
    - Western Digital 500 GB MyBook External Drive connected to Airport Extreme thru USB
    - FAT32 Formated
    Computers:
    - 2 Toshiba Proteges, Both with 4GB RAM
    - Both have Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1, 64-bit version
    - (Sorry we have no MacBooks at home, just iPhones and iPods!)
    Airport Utility:
    - Version  5.6.1
    Airport Disk Preferences Utility:
    - Version  1.5.5.3
A week ago, I was able to copy over large files (videos <4GB in size) to the drive.  Now, when I try to copy over these large files to the drive, the copy dialog box hangs.  I receive a message stating that Windows is calculating the size, but then it doesn't copy over.  Windows then gives me a message that it is unable to copy to the drive.  When I test the drive connection by copying a small text file over, it copies over quickly and seamlessly.  This problem occurs on both computers.
I am able to do the following with the drive connection:
    - Read files
    - Change file names
    - Copy files from the drive to my computer
    - See the contents of drive
I've tried all the combinations of the following with no success:
    - Turning off Windows Search
    - Downgrading the firmware
    - Reconfiguring wireless adapter
    - Rebooting computer
    - Rebooting wireless router
    - Rebooting external drive
The drive seems to be working fine except for when I want to copy <2GB files over to the drive.  Does anyone have a solution that seems to work?
    Thanks!

I'm happy to report that, after reformatting the drive to HFS+ (aka Mac OS Extended), there are no problems writing/copying large or small files to the AirDisk drive.  I'm also happy to report that I am copying to the drive at a rate of roughly 4MB/s.
As I mentioned earlier, the only catch is that I am unable to plug the external drive directly into a Windows computer via the USB port as Windows is unable to read HFS+ formatted drives.  (I can, however, plug the drive into a Mac computer as they can read HFS+ formatted drives.  The only problem is that I don't own any Macs at this time!  LOL!)
You're probably wondering how I formatted the external drive to HFS+ since I don't own any Macs.  (Windows only allows you to format drives in exFAT, FAT, NTFS and the like.)  That is a good question.  Basically, I downloaded an open source formatting tool called, Gparted, which allows you to format any USB drive to any major file format system.  Since Gparted is an open source tool, it is a little cumbersome to use. Once you figure out how to use it, it is a cinch to format the drive to HFS+.  (Of course, an easier method would be to borrow a friend's mac, plug the drive into their mac, and format it to HFS+ using their mac.)
For a step-by-step guide on how to solve this problem, see the steps below:
    1) Backup all data from external drive
        a) Fortunately, I have a 1TB ultraportable USB drive which has enough space to backup all data on the drive
    2) Format the external drive to HFS+ using one of the methods below
        a) Plug it into a Mac and format it
         b) Use Gparted (free) to format it
    3) Plug the drive back into the Airport Extreme
    4) Start copying files over to your networked drive!
I hope this helps you! Cheers!

  • Airport disk just stopped working after Leopard install

My airport disk worked perfectly in Tiger. After installing Leopard i can see airport disks in the finder but when i try to see contents the system hangs up for a few seconds and then i get a message "can't connect to disk" or something similar. I tried reinstalling airport software from cd, upgrading firmware of airport extreme, deleting keys from keychain but still don't work. Any experience?
    Thanks

    Hi,
This could be related to an authentication issue, could you try to change the authentication of the disk to "With a disk password" or "With base station password" on the disk pane of the airport utility (into the file sharing tab)?

  • AirPort Express constantly restarting after firmware upgrade

    Hello,
I have an AirPort Express that extends a wireless network created by a Time Capsule. They are identified by AirPort Utility 5.6 as "AirPort Express 802.11n" and "Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Generation)". The AirPort Express has worked properly for several years, but after updating the firmware to 7.6.1 a few weeks ago, it regurlaly hangs for a while, but works fine again for hours or days in between (so it isn't broken). The Time Capsule was upgraded to 7.6.1 at the same time and works without problems.
When the AirPort Express hangs, it's restarting itself all the time: the status light is solid amber for about a minute (starting up), then flashes two times amber (connecting), becomes green (ok) for half a second, and then solid amber again (restarting). This cyclic restarting can last for hours. Very strange behavior... During such cyclic restarting, it is on so shortly that it never shows up in AirPort Utility and it is impossible to connect and read the log file.
A factory default reset is possible and allows to configure it with AirPort Utility. But after reconfiguring, the AirPort Express entrers the cyclic restarting again. The same happens when configuring to join (instead of extend) the wireless network. After trying to factory-reset and reconfigure several times and finally letting it in its cyclic restarting for a while, it suddenly comes back on and will work again for several hours or even days (until the problem comes back again).
My next try will be to revert to firmware 7.6 (AirPort Utility 5.6 > Base Station > Upoad Firmware...). Any other ideas around?
    P.S.
I didn't find several (advanced) functionalities of the original AirPort Utility (5.6) in the new version (6.x): for example "Upload Firmware", "Logs and Statistics", "Use dynamic global hostname", "Disconnect disk users", etc. I hope 5.6 will be available and maintained for a while...

At the next hang of the AirPort Express and after a factory reset, I tried to revert to firmware 7.6 (AirPort Utility 5.6 > Base Station > Upoad Firmware… > select firmware from a list of available versions). After a while, it failed with the following error message:
An error occurred while updating the firmware.
Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-1)
The Airport express was hanging again. After another factory reset, the menu item Upload Firmware… didn't show available firmware versions anymore, but asked to open a file in a finder pane. Is this expected behaviour?
The event log of the Time Capsule shows the following entries during the cyclic restarting of the AirPort Express (which doesn't give me a clue about the cause of my problem):

  • Monitoring Airport Disk?

I'm looking for a utility that could monitor an airport disk connected to AEBS. I'd like to control connected clients, connexions duration and speed...
    Any idea?

My issue was just resolved a few moments ago (hopefully indefinitely) by reverting the AEBS firmware from 7.4.2 to 7.4.1. I referenced to the following thread for assistance just in case others who visit this thread might find it helpful: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2158515
Apparently there are at least four different generations of the AEBS which can play a role in the issues users are experiencing - zero airdisk connectivity, loss of file transfers, hanging (aka forever spinning beach-ball), etc. One excerpt referenced from the above thread link noted by user Catmandog highlighted this point:
"... There are at least 4 generations with some physical hardware differences. Apple have done well not to put model numbers on the units so most folk have no idea what they have, or what the unit can or can't do
To the best of my knowledge:
sim dual band v2 (mc340 model) - only 7.5 is compatible (has 5gigN & USB hard disk problems)
sim dual band v1 model - 7.4.1 (has some USB drive issues), 7.4.2 (lots of USB drive issues)
dual band gigabit - 7.2, 7.2.1, 7.3.1, 7.3.2 (works well with USB drives), 7.4.1 (has some USB drive issues), 7.4.2 (lots of USB drive issues)
older airport extreme units - Can't help you there sorry
Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of the above

  • Airport disk transfer stops apps from opening

I have an Airport Disk and if I'm transferring something to the disk no applications will open while the transfer is going.
Say I start a copy of a file and then try open System Preferences. System Preferences will bounce in the dock constantly until the transfer is finished or until I cancel it.
Apps that are already running will continue to work perfectly fine, but new apps won't open.
Is anyone else having this issue?

AJA Kona have a utility for testing disk speed. It's pretty good. Enable network volumes from preferences.

  • How do I set up Airport Extreme Airport Disk as Central Media Storage when I have Directv, Windows and Mac needing access?

I have an always on PC in my living room, but I want the macbook pro to have the same media without taking up the space.  iTunes Shared lacks the sorting features of having the library directly associated.  What I want to do is setup a hard drive on my AEBS to house all my media.
I have a 120GB SSD on my PC in the LR. (with an 80GB drive I may put with it for extra space if needed)
    A 250GB MBP
    A 2TB drive (installed in a USB/eSATA enclosure)
    A 1TB drive
    A 500GB usb WD Passport
I use iTunes for Movies, Music, Podcasts
    I use Picasa for Pictures
I want to house these large libraries on the AEBS Airport Disk and have the MBP and PC access the media.  I ideally want iTunes to identify that as the iTunes Media Library for both the MBP and PC.  I haven't found a good run down of how this would work.  Especially since I want to make sure Directv can access the media as well as the PC and MBP.
I will store all my media on the 2TB, I will use the 1TB to backup all the media in a safe, and the 500GB I want to split for Time Machine and Windows backup.  With all my media off those drives, 500GB should be enough space to keep backups for a while to restore programs and what not from.
    Thanks for any help.

You may want to revisit your strategy to using an AirPort Disk for Time Machine backups and that is because Apple does not support this. If your backups are critical to you, then I would strongly recommend that you reconsider using another destination source option.

The troubleshooting C17 is the specific article.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
This is generally a Lion error.. and you will need 5.6 utility to get access to the disk area.
So download the real utility. Run it instead of v6 toy version.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go to the manual setup, disk page and click on disconnect all users.. that will unmount all users connected to the disk and allow it to start working. But there are a number of other issues that are possible cause. Pondini lists some of them.

  • AirPort Disk works on Vista but is ULTRA SLOW on MacBook Pro...please help.

This is nuts, huh? Please help.
I can copy files using Window's Vista at about 7MBps so it takes around 2min 40secs to copy a previously bought 1.3GB iTunes TV show from the AirPort Disk (connected via USB 2.0)to my Vista machine. I understand this is a reasonable speed, if you think it should go faster let me know. When I try to play it with iTunes directly from the Airport Disk(by control clicking it and telling it to play with iTunes, not sure this is the best way, advice appreciated) it plays okay but I get a fair amount of stutters where it will skip a 1-4 seconds. Any way to fix this? Or should I just download it to my computer and play it from there. I was trying to save space and confusion on my computers and just play via the Airport Extreme Disk.
NOW THE WEIRD STUFF! It takes 4 hours to download the same TV file mentioned above from the Airport Disk to my MacBook Pro! And to stream the movie from the Airport Disk is impossible. Can anyone offer suggestions? I searched online and could not find any help.
Additional Info that might be helpful:
-AirPort Extreme 340ll/a, Version 7.5(I assume that's the firmware version).
-I erased with 0s and formatted an external 7200RPM 8MB Western Digital drive to "Mac OS Extended Journaled" via my MacBook Pro's USB port, using Disk Utility.
-My wi-fi connections seems fine: for web surfing it is fast with my Macbook and Windows computers, so that's not a problem. FYI, I did some internet download speed tests and got like 15,000-20,000kbps, which is pretty good, right?
-I hooked the drive up directly to my MacBook Pro's USB 2.0 port and copied the same HD TV show file to the computer, and Apple's "Activity Monitor" utility showed it is reading and writing at 30MBps which I understand is quite good. So it does not appear to be a hard drive problem either.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Cause of problem:
I found out that the problem was that in the "Airport Utility" under "Internet Connection" tab, the "Connection Sharing" had been set to "Off(Bridge Mode)". This stopped my MacBook Pro from accessing the AirPort Disk(an external hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station). I still find it weird that My HP computer could access the AirPort Disk just fine and my MacBook Pro was so ultra slow(i.e. 4 hours to copy a 1.3GB file!) accessing files on the hard drive.
So, how did the default setting get changed to cause the problem to being with? I got some error pop-up box that said there were 2 NAT tables causing a conflict of some sort, so I followed it's instructions which put it in bridge mode which caused the problems. The reset of the wireless router put the "Connection Sharing" back into "Share a Public IP address" mode which is the default.
So anyway, this appears to be the end of this story, and I hope this post saves some people out there from some headaches and lost time!
    Peace!
