Airport Disk extremely slow

I recently purchased a Mac Pro (2.66 GHz) with Airport Extreme and an Airport Extreme (802.11n) Base Station. I have OS 10.5.1 installed. I am able to find my USB drive attached to the AEBS as an Airport Disk, but it is extremely slow. I initiated connection to the disk (500GB) about 30 minutes ago, and the files on the disk have yet to show up - the little circle in the Finder window is still spinning. Any suggestions as to what's the problem and how to fix it? Thanks.

Simple answer: There is a problem with the firmware 7.2.1 update. Simple solution is to revert back to firmware 7.1.1. Apple knows about, but is being silent about the problem as of 12/3/2007. (A new firmware update is in the making, but don't hold your breath) The issue is still there with Leopard, so don't look to the new cat for a fix. I found the following info in a different thread and now my airport disks works perfectly again.
I started having this issue right after the firmware update 7.2.1
I went back to the firmware update 7.1.1 and all is fine now my airport disks are working normal
to change the firmware update go to
Airport utility
select manual setup
go to summary
Click directly on the word "version" and change it to 7.1.1

  • Virtual Disk Extremely Slow

I just recently created a virtual disk of 200gigs via Disk Utility.  My concern is it copies files (via drag & drop) EXTREMELY slow.  25gigs takes about 4.5 hrs.  My previous (early 2008) Mac has had a virtual drive I created on it for years and it behaves "normal" as in it sends and receives files at a similar rate as any of my other external G-Drives.
Going to any other external drive, 25gigs will take only 2-3 mins.
    Any insight?

  • Airport Extreme extended with Airport Express - extremely slow

I know this is not new. I have seen many discussions on this subject but no real answer.
My setup: ADSL modem connected to a AEBS (square, N compatible). Yesterday I got an older Airport Express (draft N) and extended the WiFi netowork.
I understand that this extension will reduce the speed but I didnt expect it to be that slow:
    Download speeds:
    - cable connection to the AEBS: >10 Mb/s
    - wireless connection near the AEBS: 9.5 Mb/s
    - wireless connection near the Airport Express: 0.2 Mb/s !!!
In the Airport Utility the Airport Express connection shows as GOOD.
Is it normal? Should I try to change configuration, channels, anything to improve this?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Tonden

From my experience of setting up the Airport WiFi for family members and friends, I have learnt the following :-
    1. Airport Express is not as good as Airport Extreme, for being as extender, the difference can be quite a lot.
    2. There is always a dead cornor (bad reception) in a house
    3. Even moving the Airport Extreme / AE a few inches, the performance can be improved quite significant
    4. If possible, always choose 5G 802.11n than 2.4G, unless there are many thick walls.
My suggestion will be as follows :
    1. Moving out the AEBS out of a closet, is a good idea
    2. Always try to locate the AEBS in the centre of a area, instead of the two sides
    3. Try to test the AEBS without an extender, and find the best location area (don't place on the floor, neither above 6 feet height)
    4. After finding a best location, set the extender closer to the AEBS, and then moving apart from it (check the performance after every move), it is better that both devices can face each other.
    5. I can't tell you the reason, and some people may not agree with me, the new 2013 Airport Exteme performance is better and may be is a good idea to replace your Airport Express, and use it to connect with your router, and old AEBS as an extender
    6. Some Powerlinks (in case you can't use a wired ethernet connection between the two devices) work and some don't work with Apple Airport products, therefore, if possible, have an option to return them to the shop if they do not match
    Good luck

  • Airport Express extremely slow

    Hi,
I am using an airport express (n) to extend my wireless network from my time capsule. The time capsule is connected to my cable modem in the office. When I do a bandwidth test from my computer in the office I get speeds of about 22mbps. The express is located in the living room for the family to use their laptops (all n) and our apple TV. In that room we are only getting speeds of about 1mbps making using the apple tv painful for trying to watch HD movies and browsing in general very slow.
I seem to be getting a fine signal on the express so for the life of me can't figure out why its so slow. I would expect a bit of slowdown but this is really bad... Anyone else have a similar issue that they were able to resolve?

Check your configuration settings again for the Time Capsule and Airport Express using AirPort Utility. You may need to temporarily relocate the Express near the Time Capsule to do this.
Open AirPort Utility. On the Time Capsule, note the AirPort ID of the device in the information to the right and jot that down. Click Manual Setup, then click the Wireless tab below the row of icons. The key settings to check are:
    Wireless Mode...Create a wireless network
Make sure you have a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended".
On the AirPort Express, select that device in AirPort Utility and also note its AirPort ID, then click Manual Setup
    Wireless Mode....Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name....Exact name of your network that the Time Capsule is creating
Make sure you have a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Security...same setting as the Time Capsule
Password...same setting as the Time Capsule
Update if you make any changes and temporarily power off the AirPort Express
Take your laptop to the area where the Express will be located and test to make sure that you can get a good, reliable connection. If you can't, neither will the Express. Position the Express closer to the Time Capsule. Start at 1/2 to 2/3 of the distance between the Time Capsule and the area you want to "extend". Most users tend to position too far away from the main device.
Power up the Express. Hold down the option key on your computer and click on the fan shaped Airport icon at the top of your computer screen. Look for the BSSID. That should be the AirPort ID of your Express, indicating that is is functioning correctly. Look for the Transmit Rate. What number do you see?

  • Airport (express) extremely slow wifi and ethernet speeds! Please help!

    Hello there,
I am having some difficulty with my new airport express. Basically I got it to use while at university where they only have ethernet. It's like a hotel, once you connect to it you log in via a web browser.
The issue is I plug it in, set it up to create a new wireless network, everything connects to it fine (macbook, ipad etc) but then the speed is HORRIBLE.
I did a speed test on my iPhone (over wifi) and the down speed was about 10x slower than what it was connecting my laptop straight to the ethernet port on the wall.
The laptop when plugged in via ethernet to the airport base station was even slower! Speedtest couldn't even load itself.
I used to use my macbook pro and just share the connection with other devices I had, but I didn't like leaving it on near 24/7.
I'm failing to understand why my macbook pro shares the internet fine with other devices, but the airport express cannot do the same (it shares it, but SUPER slow).
Any tips would be appreciated. I've come here as a close to last resort .
In bridge mode it shares the internet with any one device absolutely fine as well.
Hopefully someone can help me out!
    Thanks,
    Tan

Ha that's highly unlikely they can tell you have a router don't worry!
Right so I figured it out after numerous attempts!! My internet is now super fast to all devices and no slow issues at all!
What I did was to change the settings for router mode to 'DHCP and NAT' and although the airport came up with an error about double NAT, this is actually what we want. So you can click the ignore button.
By changing it to NAT the router appears as one device on the uni network and the devices that connect to it are monitored soley by the router so they don't really appear on the uni network. This means that the connection that was previously split to three devices through one point on the uni network is now only going to 'one' device (router) which is then splitting the connection itself and so it's much faster!
Hope that makes sense I know I haven't explained it very well...
I've left all other settings as default in case you were wondering.
    Good luck!

  • Airport Express EXTREMELY Slow when extending Aiport Extreme

So I have an airport Express hooked up to my airport extreme to extend my wireless network. Those devices that connect to my Extreme download 25+mbps. Those devices hooked up to my airport express (those that are farther away and naturally pick the closer router, which is the express) won't break 1mbps.  I live in a remote area, there is no inteference I can find (I downloaded iStumbler), I've changed the channels from auto through the range, I've done everything I could think of to try to figure this out. As far as I can tell there is just some sort of incompatability between these two devices that should go together like peanut butter and jelly. Instead I've got peanut butter and anchovies.  I've googled around, I'm not alone, and I have yet to see even a decent attempt at a solution. IF you have one, I'll offer you kudos galore! Thanks!

Start your investigation by taking the AirPorts to an Apple store to have them checked out for proper operation.
Assuming that they work correctly at the store....and you continue to have difficulites at home.....it's pretty clear that something in or around your home is causing the problem.
iStumber will not display the signals from an offending cordless phone at your house or a close neighbors. Nor will it display any "closed" networks (you can't see the name of the wireless network) in the vicinity. Nor will it display a wireless security/camera system, microwave tower signals,  satellite receivers, TVs, and the long list goes on and on.
I've had wireless difficulties in the past and could not figure out where the problems were coming from. I hired an RF signal pro, who came out with equipment and performed a survey of signals in the area.
iStumbler revealed a total of 4 or 5 networks. The professional equipment revealed 31 sources of potential interference problems, just to give you an idea of how difficult it can sometimes be to identify the real source of interference issues.
Post back when you have had the Apple folks check the devices out and we'll then try to narrow some of the possibilities down.

  • My iMac with Comcast is suddenly extremely slow

Suddenly my imac with comcast internet with apple airport is extremly slow.
This sort of came out of the blue.
I have called Comcast and they said everything on their end seems to check out fine.
Going a bit nuts here. Any ideas as to why this is happening?
    Anything I should test?

  • Airport Extreme - USB Hard Disk Runs Slow

I have the new Airport Extreme with a USB hub connecting to an HP printer and a Hard Disk. Everything works fine except the HD is very slow in Windows Explorer, saving and opening files. The access and speed to the disk from my macbook is great. Runs very slow from my dell laptop running XP.
I am running the Airport Disk Utility.
Any ideas how I can speed up the performance from my Dell laptop w/XP?
    Dell   Windows XP   macbook

I've had a similar problem, but unlike you, the drive's contents completely disappear... I dont dare try to add anything to the drive in that condition.
Here is what seems to work, but I am still fiddling with it. I am a PC Windows XP environment, with 2 wireless laptops and 2 desktops. I was having trouble with the reliability of the drive until I reformatted the airdrive as a MAC HFS+ file using MacDrive. This creates some of its own problems and hence this suggestion might not apply to you. The problem seems to arise when I unplug and reconnect the drives from my Airport. When I plug it in directly to my PC, it says there are some volume errors. When I run the repair facility (kind of like chkdsk on FAT32 drives) and then reconnect to my AEBS, it seems to work. You might want to try that. Hope this is helpful, but clearly, Apple needs to issue a patch to resolve these issues.

  • Extremely slow speed when backing up onto Airport Extreme disk

I have a wireless network set up with the Network Extreme basestation. The basestation has a 500 GB iomega drive attached via the USB 2.0 port. The disk comes up just fine, but when I try to use it as a backup disk from my iMac using SuperDuper!, I get an effective peak copy speed of 1.9 MB/s, and it takes multiple hours to perform a ~30 GB backup. The disk is Mac formatted.
For comparison, if I plug the disk directly into the USB port on my iMac, the peak effective speed is ~15 MB/s and the backup takes 35 min.
The iMac and the basestation are both running 802.11n, with an effective speed of 130 MB/s.
On the off chance that it was the disk imaging process that was slowing things down, I have run SuperDuper! with disk imaging back to the iMac's HD rather than the Airport Extreme HD and it runs at ~20 MB/s.
    To review:
    - Trying to backup to the Airport disk runs really, really slowly and takes forever
    - It's not the network speed, the HD speed or the software.
What's up? Anyone else have this problem? One of the reasons I bought the Airport Extreme was to use it as a network back-up HD. If it going to take a day to copy a full iMac disk, then this is clearly unsatisfactory.

I would echo Glyn's assessment. One needs to keep in mind that Apple designed this product as a low cost device to meet the typical requirements of a home user (ie streaming of music, sharing of a few files, and backups without time constraints). If one needs the performance levels typical of a network file server, then this is the wrong product to use. Perhaps Apple's marketing information for this device should make that a bit clearer.

  • AirPort Disk works on Vista but is ULTRA SLOW on MacBook Pro...please help.

This is nuts, huh? Please help.
I can copy files using Window's Vista at about 7MBps so it takes around 2min 40secs to copy a previously bought 1.3GB iTunes TV show from the AirPort Disk (connected via USB 2.0)to my Vista machine. I understand this is a reasonable speed, if you think it should go faster let me know. When I try to play it with iTunes directly from the Airport Disk(by control clicking it and telling it to play with iTunes, not sure this is the best way, advice appreciated) it plays okay but I get a fair amount of stutters where it will skip a 1-4 seconds. Any way to fix this? Or should I just download it to my computer and play it from there. I was trying to save space and confusion on my computers and just play via the Airport Extreme Disk.
NOW THE WEIRD STUFF! It takes 4 hours to download the same TV file mentioned above from the Airport Disk to my MacBook Pro! And to stream the movie from the Airport Disk is impossible. Can anyone offer suggestions? I searched online and could not find any help.

-I erased with 0s and formatted an external 7200RPM 8MB Western Digital drive to "Mac OS Extended Journaled" via my MacBook Pro's USB port, using Disk Utility.
-My wi-fi connections seems fine: for web surfing it is fast with my Macbook and Windows computers, so that's not a problem. FYI, I did some internet download speed tests and got like 15,000-20,000kbps, which is pretty good, right?
-I hooked the drive up directly to my MacBook Pro's USB 2.0 port and copied the same HD TV show file to the computer, and Apple's "Activity Monitor" utility showed it is reading and writing at 30MBps which I understand is quite good. So it does not appear to be a hard drive problem either.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Cause of problem:
I found out that the problem was that in the "Airport Utility" under "Internet Connection" tab, the "Connection Sharing" had been set to "Off(Bridge Mode)". This stopped my MacBook Pro from accessing the AirPort Disk(an external hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station). I still find it weird that My HP computer could access the AirPort Disk just fine and my MacBook Pro was so ultra slow(i.e. 4 hours to copy a 1.3GB file!) accessing files on the hard drive.
So, how did the default setting get changed to cause the problem to being with? I got some error pop-up box that said there were 2 NAT tables causing a conflict of some sort, so I followed it's instructions which put it in bridge mode which caused the problems. The reset of the wireless router put the "Connection Sharing" back into "Share a Public IP address" mode which is the default.
So anyway, this appears to be the end of this story, and I hope this post saves some people out there from some headaches and lost time!
    Peace!

  • Airport Express and USB Hard drive and extremely slow performance

    HI Guys,
I seem to having a lot of trouble with an Airport express and a Lacie 1TB drive. While I have solved several problems by updating firmware and enabling journalling on the Lacie, I am still having problems with extremely slow performance with my macbook, particularly using itunes and Firefox.
Any ideas and any further information needed?
    Regards

    HI,
I formatted it using the Lacie setup program for Mac and later enabled it for journalling using Disk utility. This seemed to solve a lot of the recognition problems I was having, however the I-Tunes and firefox performance is still atrocious. If I do Need to completely reformat it using Disk Utility, will I lose my files on the disk now?
not if you move them to a temporary location before you start.
yes, you are better of formatting the drive with DU.

  • MBP 5.1 I have a recent problem with airport connectivity. ethernet connection is working fine, but wifi has become extremely slow and bad functioning. signal is received, no problem with the wlan (my husband 's wifi with MBP is perfect) please help

I have a MBP 5.1 with snow leopard 10.6.8. It has been working fine until few days ago, when it started to have different problems:
    1) airport is not working well. it is extremely slow, has difficulties in fully loading pages, looses connectivity, It is not browser related, behaves thesame in safari or firefox; it is not the router/wlan; my husband mbp wifi works fine (as it was mine...) and iphone wifi is also working fine. it sees the signal and different networks. , it is also very very slow in opening skype (after that, it is working ok) if  I connect via ethernet cable to the same router, everything works perfectly and with the correct speed.could it be a damaged airport card? a software problem/corruption? logic board? (I hope not, the computer is out of apple care now....)
    2) after a certain time (more than hours) of use, the trackpad is behaving strangly, increase sensitivity to touch, unwanted selection of folders, files and text or images in web pages when i move the cursor, the cursor jumping all over the places while writing, ecc I have the impression it starts doing that when I use heavily the CPU ( and the temperature goes up). Is this again a problem of the mother/logic board?
I had recently serviced it since it was not booting properly, but except some permissions repaired, they did noit find anything wrong in the hard drive (which I have  now substituted with a SSD) or other hardware.
thanks in advance for any help/suggestions
    alessandra

I think I solved the wifi connection problem, just by switching off completely the router! sounds trivial, but in this case it worked!!!
the funny behaviour of the trackpad/cursor still persists. any suggestion???
    thanks again

  • Airport Extreme slowing down internet connection to a crawl

    Hi,
    Can anyone explain this one?
Just this afternoon my internet connection slowed to a crawl. Pages would stall loading and I couldn't even collect emails. There was a connection there. A Google search might take a minute or so but anything else would barely flinch.
So I did a few restarts and complete power downs of all my peripherals, computers and network devices but no joy. I called my broadband provider who did a remote test of my cable modem and confirmed it was responding well.
So I removed the Airport Extreme from the network and connected directly to the modem. All was fine, in fact that is how I am working now. But when connecting the Airport Extreme back in I have this extremely slow connection. I have looked at both the Network preferences and Airport Setup Utility. Both claim the connection is good.
I also have an old G4 in another room. It was switched off during all the goings on this afternoon but I powered it up to see if the same problem persisted. Sure enough it does, as it is also connected via the AE. However, the local connection between computers is just fine.
So how do I resolve this? Why would the AE cause such an internet slowdown?
    Thanks,
    Colin

I've had similar symptoms on my network. Here are network details:
    Comcast is the ISP
I have an Extreme and an Express set up as a single wireless network.
Extreme is plugged in to the cable modem. Express is an extension of the Extreme.
Devices that are regularly "on network": Mac Mini (G4), MacBook, Mac Pro, 2 TiVO Series 2.
    All Macs are running 10.4.10.
Symptom: Over the course of 3-6 weeks, wireless access slows to a crawl for the Intel-based MacBook and MacPro, but not the PowerPC Mini. All web sites, email traffic, etc., for the Intel Macs becomes painful: CNN's home page loads in minutes, not seconds, for example. Unplugging and replugging the Express doesn't do anything. Powering off and on the Extreme resolves the issue. For now. There are no pending firmware updates for the Express or Extreme that I'm aware of.

  • Extremely slow speeds on Windows Computers with 5th Generation AirPort Extreme

I just got a new refurbished AirPort Extreme 5th generation. Everything works great for all of my OS X devices and iOS Devices. I am getting my ISPs speeds when doing tests. The issue is when I am using Windows devices. My roommate has a desktop and a netbook and both are getting extremely slow speeds. Speeds like .07Mbps down. Does anyone have any idea what the issue might be?

You have no large file?? Really.. in the whole computer there is not a windows update file.. a backup file... a movie download file.. nothing.. ??
Anyway that is irrelevant.. the issue is wireless.
Download the latest drivers from the wireless manufacturer.
You will need to find out what wireless card is used and locate the correct download for that model.
On the Airport it is well worth doing the following tests.
    1. Change the name to SMB standard.. short no spaces pure alphanumeric.
So if your wireless name is Fred Blog's Airport Extreme wireless
    Plesae change it to AEwifi
    2. Take off all security for a test.
    3. Set channels.. I am guessing the computers are only using 2.4ghz, so set 11,6, 1 in that order.
No improvement.. just put the security back to WPA2 Personal with pure alphanumeric password..
Try and test new drivers and use no firewalls on the computer.. ensure that the computer is correctly set for home network.
Beyond that it is just incompatible.

  • Finder/Disk Access Extremely Slow

I have a G4 867 (MDD) running OS 10.4.6. After putting my computer to sleep last night, I woke up this morning to find hanging at the login-from-sleep screen. I force-restarted, and since that point the computer, and especially some components of the Finder, has been running EXTREMELY slow.
    Symptoms:
-Hard drives are slow to appear (I have two on the primary channel and two on the secondary). They will eventually show up, but it can take over a minute for drives other than the startup drive. When I scan them with Disk Utility, they appear fine.
-Using menus and accessing files in the Finder can take upwards of a minute or so. Likewise, switching between programs can induce waits of about 30 seconds.
-Curiously, once inside a program (say, Safari or iTunes), no problems exist local to the program, and it can run nearly unaffected... but if I need to change applications or access a file outside the program, the problems surface.
    Things I've tried:
    -Restarting.
    -Trashing my Finder prefs.
    -Zapping the PRAM.
    -Resetting the PMU.
    -Running Disk Utility.
    -Running Yasu.
    -Reinstalling the 10.4.6 Update.
-Trying to reinstall Tiger (which failed; initially, the DVD couldn't see the drives- then, after I checked them with Disk Utility, it could see them but failed to install after checking the DVD and asked me to restart)
    Can anyone help?
G4 Dual 867 (Mirrored Drive Doors)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2 GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AGP

I got my AE and Seagate FreeAgent Pro hard drive
yesturday and I have the exact same problem.
If I hook up the drive to the computer directly it is
    very very fast.
If I hook it up to the AE it takes about 2 hours to
move a couple fils totaling 2 gigs over ETHERNET!
If I transfer the same files over the same network
between 2 computers the speed is much much faster.
Is this normal or some nasty firmware bug. It almost
feels like the AE is using USB 1.0 for some reason.
You guys are funny. How about checking out the specs of USB 2.0 and 802.11g/n?
    Go here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.11g#802.11g
    and here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_2.0
Firewire vs. USB tests are here:
    http://www.g4tv.com/techtvvault/features/39129/USB20_Versus_FireWirepg3.html
    802.11g:
Release Date Op. Frequency Data Rate (Typ) Data Rate (Max) Range (Indoor)
    June 2003 2.4 GHz 19 Mbit/s 54 Mbit/s ~35 meters
    802.11n:
Release Date Op. Frequency Data Rate (Typ) Data Rate (Max) Range (Indoor)
    Mid 2008 5 GHz and/or 2.4 GHz 74 Mbit/s 248 Mbit/s (2 stream) ~70 meters
Bottom line: 802.11n typical is 74Mbps, 802.11g typical is 19Mbps. USB 2.0 typical is 50Mbps.
On the average, you should expect your speed to drop by over 50% when connecting the USB drive to AESB using an 802.11g device. If your device is 802.11n, then you should have pretty much similar performance.
Now, if you increase the distance from your base station, or you put walls in between, the performance of 802.11g will go down "dramatically", all the way to 2-3Mbps, easy. Not so for 802.11n, which behaves much better at longer distances.
