Airport disk interminable wait

I've had Time machine working very well with my second internal disk but I decided to change over to a 1TB network disk attached to the Airport Extreme using USB2.0. I have 118GB to back up, so I don't expect greased lightning, but it's only backed up 39GB in the last 24 hrs! At this rate it will take 3 days for the initial backup. Is this to be expected or should I be getting faster than this out of my Airport network?

I just completed what you're doing yesterday, backing up my G4 powerbook (roughly 80 GB total), and had the powerbook connected via ethernet to the Airport Extreme. It took about 8 hours to finish the first backup.
As far as the trick above, the article I read was a bit different. Rather than stopping and starting the backup, when doing the first back up, go into Time Machine Settings and exclude everthing but a small file/folder, and let TM build the sparse image on the air disk. Then when done, connect the external drive to your mac, change the settings in Time Machine to not exclude anything and it will do an incremental backup to the sparse image. I didn't know that before I started mine, elsewise I might have tried it.
Once you get an intial backup done, the incremental hourly backups, are done quickly--comparable to what I was used to seeing with the external hard drive connected to my powerbook.

  • Bootable backup to AirPort disk?

Is there any backup app that'll do a bootable backup to an AirPort disk?

    von Bordwehr ~
Yes, there is. It has a terrible name, but it's called SuperDuper! and it's by Shirt Pocket (http://shirtpocket.com/). You can download a free trial version that allows you backup your source drive to any other target drive, and the target is bootable, if the source is bootable. Also, you can backup to a sparse disk image, which has some benefits.
The free version allows you backup from one drive to another, but if you pay the $28 you get a license to unlock all the features, which include "smart" backups that allow you to copy files from your source to target that have changed, not ALL files. This can take several hours less, in fact I have been able to perform a complete boot volume backup over Airport in about 30 minutes (once I had done an initial backup).
I have used it to copy my boot volume to another larger drive that I later swapped in my MBP; it worked flawlessly. SuperDuper! does not backup Windows volumes, Mac volumes only so I had to reinstall Boot Camp (could have used Norton Ghost, but only use Windows when absolutely necessary).
One caveat, SD! doesn't work with 10.5.x as of this writing, and the developer claims he didn't get 10.5 until the rest of the world received it. Ahem, that was about a month ago now so... still waiting... But works great in 10.3.9 and 10.4.x! I recommend it highly!
    Hope this helps!

  • Airport Disk Utility not working on Intel mac...

    Ok here's a new one...
I just got a new macBook (intel) to replace my 12inch G4. On the 12inch, Airport Disk Utility worked just fine recognizing my lacie drive hooked up to AEBS. I used a firewire cable to import settings to the intel macbook and that's when things went wrong.
On the new laptop, Airport Disk Utility gives me an alarm chime when I open it and no matter what I do, it won't see the drive. What's more, I can't even get the icon to show up in the menu bar (even though the drive shows up when I check the base station with the airport configuration utility). Whenever I check either one of the boxes, I get an alarm chime.
What's more the airport disk utility still works on the G4.
I've tried resetting the network, reinstalling stuff- I don't know what else to do. I don't know much about networking, but I wonder if importing the settings from the G4 is somehow the culprit or just something to do with it being intel?

Well I fixed this. Get the AirPortBaseStationUpdate2007001.dmg update. I had installed this, but it didn't put in a few items that it should have. Mainly a little application in Core Servies. I used Pacifist to install the Airport Disk Utility again, and then restarted. I no longer got a beep when opening AD Utility, but I had to uncheck "Automatically discover disks" then turn off file sharing on the router, wait for it to restart, then turn file sharing back on, and then open AD Utility after restart and click Auto Discover. It then saw my disks. I also changed the name of the Windows Workgroup, I don't know if that had something to do with it. Good luck!

  • Airport disk won't let Windows 7 copy files

    Dear readers,
I've got an Airport Extreme, with a PC (win7x64), Mac mini and USB disk (Lacie Porsche design 500Gb) connected (wired Gbit).
To get acces to the disk I already changed the Windows settings below. Now when I copy several files or 1 big file to the Airport-disk, Windows pops a message that the connection is lost (although I still see the disk in Explorer). I can chosse "skip" to skip the first file, after which the rest is copied perfectly.
The Synchronize tool "SyncToy" has no problem copiing any file to the disk.
So it seems Explorer has a problem initiating a connection needed for copiing in a first attempt, right? Perhaps SyncToy is more patient and waiting for a good connection?
Does anybody have a idea how to solve this?
    Thank you
security setting change, needed to make the disk visible:
    Go to Start Menu
    Search for: security
    Click on Local Security Policy
    Goto Local Policies> Security Options
Double Click on Network security: LAN Manager Authentication
Change level to: Send LM # LTLM Responses
Then, scroll down to Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
    De-select Require 128-bit encryption
    Hit OK

Found a ...minor work around, though it's not really a solution.
Using the FastCopy app, I had no problem on copying/moving etc. Actually I managed to move more than 70GB without a single issue.
Now, as the Free Copy site (http://www.ipmsg.org/tools/fastcopy.html.en) (points out:
    - Because Reading/Writing are processed with no OS cache at all, other applications aren't easy to become heavy.
    - It runs lightly, because MFC is not used. (made by Win32 API and C Runtime only)
Maybe those two facts reveal the culprit for the annoyance.
Hopefully a better solution will come up soon.

  • Sharing itunes on airport disk... walkthrough???

Can someone help me set up this network?
I am not sure I have enough technical know how to actually do this, so I guess I need bozo instructions.
I have an airport extreme set up with a hard drive. I pointed my own itunes to the library on the disk attached to it.
I have two (eventually a third) more computers with libraries to add to the network (we are a 4 laptop family!) so all of us can share the library.
I am nervous about doing this - and I would like someone to help me with some step-by-step instructions. We have three macbooks and one powerbook - and an airport extreme block with the hard drive attached (which is the airport main), a 'dome' airport extreme (as a relay) and an unattached airport express (which used to attach to speakers.. but have yet to reconnect since getting the block APEx)
    help/instructions would be appreciated!

If you want to backup the content, you can copy the Music/iTunes folder to a backup location. (Actually, if you use the technique above, you can keep the copy in Music/iTunes as the backup; the new content will be on your Airport disk.)
If you want to backup the playlists and such, use the File->Export menu selection in iTunes.
Forgot to mention, that whenever you add new music to the Airport disk, all of the computers will have to do the File->Add to Library bit in iTunes. It's kind of a pain, and I'm sure there's an applescript just waiting to automate the process, but I haven't been motivated enough to write it. (The good news is that iTunes remembers the previous location each time you add to iTunes, so it's just three mouse clicks.)
BTW, there is another approach you might consider. If you have one computer that's up and running all the time, you could make it a sort of master iTunes and then just share it's library.
And in case it helps anyone out, I can describe how our household is set up. I'm the main iTunes user (and purchaser), so my iBook is the primary computer which we use to purchase and store main copies of all the content. We also have a family iMac that everyone uses; it's got an external disk that's used for iTunes (one partition) and Time Machine (another partition). ChronoSync is set up to automatically sync my iBook's iTunes library to the iMac every night at 3:00am. That still means that all the family members have to File->Add to Library on the iMac every now and then to keep their iTunes library up-to-date with the latest content. My wife keeps her iMac account open all the time (via Fast User Switching) with iTunes running and her library shared. If she wants to access the content from her iBook, she just uses the shared library feature in iTunes to access the iMac.

  • Can see but not browse to Airport disk, also cannot print in Bonjour

I suspect this may be related to a firewall issue or perhaps the way my corporate PC is set up (logged into Domain with VPN to Internet. What else might cause:
Windows Exporer to hang and crash when I try to browse to Airport Disk which is clearly visible in WE
nability to print, Bonjour or otherwise tothe USB attached printer in Airport. Macs work just fine

  • How do I set up Airport Extreme Airport Disk as Central Media Storage when I have Directv, Windows and Mac needing access?

I have an always on PC in my living room, but I want the macbook pro to have the same media without taking up the space.  iTunes Shared lacks the sorting features of having the library directly associated.  What I want to do is setup a hard drive on my AEBS to house all my media.
I have a 120GB SSD on my PC in the LR. (with an 80GB drive I may put with it for extra space if needed)
    A 250GB MBP
    A 2TB drive (installed in a USB/eSATA enclosure)
    A 1TB drive
    A 500GB usb WD Passport
I use iTunes for Movies, Music, Podcasts
    I use Picasa for Pictures
I want to house these large libraries on the AEBS Airport Disk and have the MBP and PC access the media.  I ideally want iTunes to identify that as the iTunes Media Library for both the MBP and PC.  I haven't found a good run down of how this would work.  Especially since I want to make sure Directv can access the media as well as the PC and MBP.
I will store all my media on the 2TB, I will use the 1TB to backup all the media in a safe, and the 500GB I want to split for Time Machine and Windows backup.  With all my media off those drives, 500GB should be enough space to keep backups for a while to restore programs and what not from.
    Thanks for any help.

You may want to revisit your strategy to using an AirPort Disk for Time Machine backups and that is because Apple does not support this. If your backups are critical to you, then I would strongly recommend that you reconsider using another destination source option.

This is generally a Lion error.. and you will need 5.6 utility to get access to the disk area.
So download the real utility. Run it instead of v6 toy version.

Go to the manual setup, disk page and click on disconnect all users.. that will unmount all users connected to the disk and allow it to start working. But there are a number of other issues that are possible cause. Pondini lists some of them.

  • Error while connecting to the AirPort Disk on Windows

    good morning to everyone.
i am sure this question has been done several times, but i am italian and don't know the correct translation of the message i receive when i try to connect to my airport and so i cannot find the post concerning.
i have a 500Gb airport disk. i have both ethernet and usb cables connected.
    airport options have been set:
    enable share documents
    shared disks with password
    guest with WRITE/READ permissions
    disks shared via WAN
workgroup name WORKGROUP, set as the same in windows control panel.
    THOUGH
when i start the pc or try to access the "Time Capsule of Lyllo" it keeps me asking the password AND if i use the password i have set in the AirPOrt Utility, it gives me an error:
user not recognized, login not available.
(forgive me, but i do not knwo the english translation of this warning message)
    can you help me?
i am trying to connect the airport since days but if i succeded once for few days, now i cannot connect anymore
    thank you.

    i have the same issue.

  • AirPort Disk works on Vista but is ULTRA SLOW on MacBook Pro...please help.

This is nuts, huh? Please help.
I can copy files using Window's Vista at about 7MBps so it takes around 2min 40secs to copy a previously bought 1.3GB iTunes TV show from the AirPort Disk (connected via USB 2.0)to my Vista machine. I understand this is a reasonable speed, if you think it should go faster let me know. When I try to play it with iTunes directly from the Airport Disk(by control clicking it and telling it to play with iTunes, not sure this is the best way, advice appreciated) it plays okay but I get a fair amount of stutters where it will skip a 1-4 seconds. Any way to fix this? Or should I just download it to my computer and play it from there. I was trying to save space and confusion on my computers and just play via the Airport Extreme Disk.
NOW THE WEIRD STUFF! It takes 4 hours to download the same TV file mentioned above from the Airport Disk to my MacBook Pro! And to stream the movie from the Airport Disk is impossible. Can anyone offer suggestions? I searched online and could not find any help.
Additional Info that might be helpful:
-AirPort Extreme 340ll/a, Version 7.5(I assume that's the firmware version).
-I erased with 0s and formatted an external 7200RPM 8MB Western Digital drive to "Mac OS Extended Journaled" via my MacBook Pro's USB port, using Disk Utility.
-My wi-fi connections seems fine: for web surfing it is fast with my Macbook and Windows computers, so that's not a problem. FYI, I did some internet download speed tests and got like 15,000-20,000kbps, which is pretty good, right?
-I hooked the drive up directly to my MacBook Pro's USB 2.0 port and copied the same HD TV show file to the computer, and Apple's "Activity Monitor" utility showed it is reading and writing at 30MBps which I understand is quite good. So it does not appear to be a hard drive problem either.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Cause of problem:
I found out that the problem was that in the "Airport Utility" under "Internet Connection" tab, the "Connection Sharing" had been set to "Off(Bridge Mode)". This stopped my MacBook Pro from accessing the AirPort Disk(an external hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station). I still find it weird that My HP computer could access the AirPort Disk just fine and my MacBook Pro was so ultra slow(i.e. 4 hours to copy a 1.3GB file!) accessing files on the hard drive.
So, how did the default setting get changed to cause the problem to being with? I got some error pop-up box that said there were 2 NAT tables causing a conflict of some sort, so I followed it's instructions which put it in bridge mode which caused the problems. The reset of the wireless router put the "Connection Sharing" back into "Share a Public IP address" mode which is the default.
So anyway, this appears to be the end of this story, and I hope this post saves some people out there from some headaches and lost time!
    Peace!

  • Can no longer sync Photos from Airport Disk

I can no longer sync photos from my Airport Disk to my tv.
This used to work fine- When I first got the tv I checked the "sync photos from" option in the photos tab in iTunes, navigated to my network drive/ pictures folder and hit sync. The photos slowly copied over.
Just this week however, I went to add some new pictures and iTunes/ tv no longer sync. The status bar just spins saying "Syncing"...I have left it overnight with no change.
I have recently updated to the latest version of iTunes and Airport Extreme firmware, but that is about it in terms of changes/updates. Anyone have any ideas?
    - Firewall is off
    - Permissions seem ok on the Airpot Disk. Everything is read/write
    - I have rebooted/ reset/ re-synced everything. It just hangs on Photos. Music etc go over fine.
    Specs:
    iMac G5 PowerPC
Airport Extreme N base station with OWC USB drive attached as airDisk
tv 1.0 40 gig - using ethernet connection to router
    iTunes 7.4.2
I am really stumped! I think that the airport disk permissions or mount are still suspect but dont know what else to check.
Does iTunes spit out a log or write to the console? Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    AC

I think I have figured it out, and photos are syncing now.
Here is what I believe happened: There is an iTunes generated folder called "iPod Photo Cache" in my "Pictures" folder on my Airpot Disk. This folder gets generated by iTunes whenever you designate a location for syncing. The "iPod Photo Cache" folder contains a file called "Photo Database".
It looks like the "Photo Database" had been corrupted. Deleting this file, or alternatively, moving my pictures to a new folder and letting iTunes regenerate the Photo Database fixed the problem.

  • Airport Disk access from the internet via Windows Vista

I have an Air Port Extreme base station and am sharing an external hard disk connected to it by the USB port. Local network connections work well with both mac's and windows machines. I am able to connect to the airport disk from the internet with my mac's fine. afp://ip address. How can I connect to this same air port disk from the internet with my PC's which run Vista? There must be a way? I have tried endlessly for many hours. any help would be appreciated.

This works fine from local network, but not from a remote location from the internet. Maybe my syntax is incorrect. My workgroup name in the Airport Utility is "Apple"
Connected locally "\\APPLE1\My Book 500GB" works and makes a connection from the map network drive windows pane. \\Apple1\my book 500gb also connects if entered from IE, again locally. What would be the correct syntax to access it from the web?
From my mac on the web afp://"ip address/ Works!!
Syntax I've tried from remote or internet: smb://??.204.218.??/apple ,smb://??.204.218.??/apple1 ,
smb://??.204.218.??/my book 500gb. IP address used is my external ip address.
    I'm still missing something??
