Airport Disk multi user access

Hi,
Can two or more computers access the airport-shared USB disk simultaniously?
I have an iMac and a MacBook, and before I buy a new AEBS I want to know if those two macs can access the airport USB disk at the same time..
Thanks in advance!

Thanks!

  • File structure and Multi-user access/control

    Hi All
Currently evaluating RH. Our plan is to use RH HTML with RoboServer and either SourceSafe or Team Foundation for source control. We will be producing the "printed" manual (PDF) and publishing online help (hopefully html via RH server) from the single source layout
Given that we will edit content in RH's XHTML editor, I'm not clear on when we should create new files or the granularity of multi-user access. We have 17 apps and I plan to use a master project and merging (because we need to link to related topics in other apps).
I'm really not sure what should constitute a file in RH. First off, is access controlled at the file level?
I want to have multiple authors editing the same manual at the same time, so do I need to break the manual into multiple small files (currently it's a single word doc)?
If I do break it into multiple files, what's the best approach: 1 file per topic (or is this a requirement)?
Finally, when I come to generate the PDF, will the files be combined. (i.e. can I have different page-breaks than I have in the RH project)?
    Any pointers greatly appreciated
    Regards
    Mark

    Hi,
First off, is access controlled at the file level?
Not sure what you mean by that. In source control, you can check in/out ever file independent. Sometimes dependent files will be automatically checked out, for instance images used in the css when you check out the style sheet.
I want to have multiple authors editing the same manual at the same time, so do I need to break the manual into multiple small files (currently it's a single word doc)?
That be the idea. Anyway, it's not a good idea to have an entire RoboHelp project in a single topic. You probably want to cut up your contents into the small chunck: topics.
If I do break it into multiple files, what's the best approach: 1 file per topic (or is this a requirement)?
In RoboHelp a topic is a HTML file. RoboHelp doesn't force you to split up content into one or more topics. If you are creating help for the web, you want the information to be organized in relatively small chunck so users can quickly scan through it.
Finally, when I come to generate the PDF, will the files be combined. (i.e. can I have different page-breaks than I have in the RH project)?
Not sure what you mean by page breaks. As RoboHelp creates HTML files, there are no page breaks such as in paper manuals. When you create a PDF, you combine the topics you need into a single document.
If a PDF is required for you, you may want to consider not using RoboHelp for your sources. A PDF created by RoboHelp is useful for internal use, but it never seems to get good enough to give to customers. Personally, when a PDF version of a manual is required, I create the manual in FrameMaker and link or import the book into RoboHelp. You can also link Word documents, so you may want to play around with that before deciding whether to use Word, RoboHelp or FrameMaker for your source.

  • Multi user access in Single application file

    Hi,
Is it possible to work Single application but multi-user access in Indesign CS6.
If yes, Please let me know how to access.
    Thansk,
    Uvaraj S

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking. InDesign files can be edited by only a single user at one time, but any user can open a file not already in use.

  • Multi-user access?

I would like to switch over our organization's website from blogspot to iweb. Right now, several of us have access to the blogspot site so that we can all post. Will I loose multi-user access if I switch to iweb? And, if not, will everyone have to have access to my personal mac account in order to post?
    Thanks for the help.

Having multiuser access requires that everyone share the Domain file where iWeb keeps its data and that each person only use the latest version of it. Of course each user must also have a Mac and iWeb installed as well. Personally I would stick with blogspot.

Can anyone tell me how can we check smartview logs (from a Word doc) for an HFM application?
Is it possible to have multi user access to a Word document via SmartView?

  • Trying to access Lion server remote using multi-user access, but from a legacy Leopard system

Just purchased a mini server running Lion, and got screen sharing working fine from my legacy system (32-bit so Leopard only). However, I would like to run in multi-user mode, so someone can use the Lion system and another person can access their own account, from the older Leopard system, at the same time. Using multi-user rather than screen sharing. But Leopard does not have the option on the Finder/Share Screen command, the pop-up window to select screen sharing or new virtual session. So, is there a way still to run a new virtual session from a remote client running Leopard?  Since the multi-user capability resides on the Lion server, it should be possible, but how, without the pop-up menu?

  • Will Lightroom help with multi user access to library in OSX 10.9?

I just bought my first Apple gear. iMac and iPads for family. I downloaded some photos to the iMac via iPhoto and tried to allow other users to share the library. This caused major headaches. Prompts to repair permissions constantly appeared, even after permissions were changed. After a visit to the Apple store for a One to One session, it seems that the OS cannot provide this simple functionality (in windows I simply changed folder permissions and it all worked, access granted).
    In OSX 10.9 I have to create a disk image, move the library there and add tweaks to auto mount the disk image volume on startup;

I have a NAS for backups, so buying another external HD I don't need is a waste of money. Surely there must be a simpler way for all users of our iMac to have access to the photo library. I thought it would be a simple folder permission issue.
Would using Lightroom instead of iPhoto to download and organize my photos and videos solve the problem or is the problem due to the way OS 10.9 works? Would Lightroom provide the same quick sharing functionality with links to Facebook and local email apps etc? Thanks.

Thanks all for the input. I now have a partitioned external HD. One partition for my iPhoto library and one for Time Machine. All users can now view the photos without being prompted for permission repairs every time iPhoto is launched (amongst other errors, my head is still spinning) . I will backup the photos on the external HD to my NAS.
I have no photos stored on my iMac's HDD, because it just doesn't work. Allowing access to the library when stored on the iMac's HD across multiple users was a headache that a senior Apple phone support tech struggled with for almost 2 hours (using remote access to view my system), and still the solution fell short. The man was very patient and friendly. He was also knowledgable. Everything he directed me to do made sense. We went around in circles setting permissions for almost 2 hours. It didn't quite work. Still had users being denied access.
Seems crazy, but having no photos stored on my brand new iMac is the best solution I can come up with. Glad I didn't spring for the SSD.

  • Multi-user access control

User #1 opens a PDF on a server and starts making changes.  User #2 opens the same file and starts making changes.  User #2 for example can create sticky notes and make lots of comments.  When User #2 tries to save his changes he's denied as User #1 opened the file first.  Is there a way (like with MS office) that User #2 will be warned when opening the file that his version is read-only?
    Thanks!

    Sorry, no.
Acrobat/Reader do not have their own file locking system (as Office does), so they have no idea that another user is accessing the document until they send the operating system a 'save' instruction, and get an error saying it's not allowed.

  • How to set up multi-user access for an email account?

    Hi,
In our business, we run 3 macs with Mountain Lion and use Mail to access our IMAP account. Each of us needs to be able to respond to and see incoming/outgoing messages on our respective computers. Unfortunately our mail provider doesn't like concurrent connections. What kind of application can we use to synchronize this account so everyone sees the same thing on each computer? Any suggestions appreciated.
I should note that we actually have 10 e-mail accounts which all need to function this way, but in the interest of simplicity let's consider we have just the one. Because we have 10 accounts, we can't use iCloud sync, nor do I want to because I don't trust it. I'm looking for something bulletproof and ideally locally stored.

I use Dreamhost and have been happy with them. There are probably a few hundred companies with similar services, although Dreamhost is one of the largest. It is pretty standard practice these days to have either Google or Microsoft transparently hold e-mail services. Exchange has definitely won the e-mail protocol wars. Basically just pick one that uses Google or Microsoft.

  • Airport disk global access

does any one know how to setup airport disk for global access, and how can it be accessed using finder globally, meaning outside of LAN.

bigraytk, Welcome to the discussion area!
Copied from Pages 58-9 of "Designing AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility" (direct PDF download).
Plug the hard disk into the USB port on the back of the base station.
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Mac, or in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a Windows computer.
Select your base station, and then choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click the Disks button, and then click File Sharing.
Choose “With a disk password,” or “With base station password” if you want to secure the shared disk with a password, or choose “With accounts” if you want to secure the disk using accounts.
If you choose to use accounts, click Configure Accounts, click the Add button, and then enter a name and password for each user that will access the disk.
Choose “Not allowed,” “Read only,” or “Read and write” to assign guest access to the disk.
*Select the “Share disks over Ethernet WAN port” checkbox if you want to provide remote access to the disk over the WAN port.*

  • Multi User request in Access Enforcer

Is anyone aware of a user limit in an access enforcer multi user request?
We get errors when we submit  a multi user access enforcer request with more than 25 users.
    Thanks

    Hi
There is no standard limit even though we advice to keep the user to max of 20 .
The limit depends upon the email content you have configured .
In case in your email notifications you have taken the argument USERID then mulitple user creation request causes issue and the limit gets set to anything between 20-25 , again depending on content of the email .
    Thanks

  • Multi-user is disabled!

    Hi,
I did something foolish by locking myself out of the system. Currently, I am only able to login as a single-user. Whenever I start the system, I am not able to login utilizing any of the user id's. I have tried serveral things including resetting the passwords using nicl command but that didn't help. I have also deleted the appleSetupDone file and went through the setup process, but again, withouth success.
I am guessing my problem has nothing to do with passwords and everything to do with multi-user permissions to certain system files/folders. I can't recall, but this issue maybe prompted by unchecking the multi-user access in the WorkGroup managment console.
I would apreciate any help on this matter as currently my system is down. This is a standalone server running Mac OS Server 10.4.8.

    Roger:
    Thanks, that sure helped!
I first had to manage my services from the "single-user" command line--fsck -fy, mount -uw /, sh /etc/rc, and serveradmin--to allow remote access through WGM. Only then I was able to reset the access rights to users, and thus, regained local control of my server.

  • Several users on a single file issue: Hosting a multi user Quickbooks file on the WD EX4

Hello everyone.  This is going to sound like a super specific third party support issue - but there are some universal things going on here that may help others regarding multiple users of individual files on the EX4. My company houses client and billing files on the EX4.  It's all been well and good until we recently allowed multi-user access to our Quickbooks company file.  Of course the goal is to have multiple employees working on the file at the same time from different computers.  We purchased licenses for each - everything is on the up and up. Whereas I could access the company file on the EX4 with no problems on my computer as a single user, now as soon as I turn on multiuser mode in QB to allow others to access the file on the EX4, the file becomes inaccessible.  What do you guys think is happening where one user access to a file on the EX4 is fine, but multiuser access causes the file to be inaccessible?  How do you fix it? Other thoughts, there doesn't seem to be a limitation on the EX4 relating to multiple people accessing the same file - streaming the same song for example.  So why would a billing database file be any different?  Especially when the licenses and program allow that access. Here's more info, if I host the file on my desktop computer everyone can access it in multiuser mode over the network.   The limitation is the WD EX4. What do you think is going on?  (I'd appreciate any insight as I am talking to both tech support teams, QB and WD, this week.)

Thank you so much for your reply.  The error shows up when one switches to multi-user mode.  It states: Error H101, H202, H303, or H505: when opening your company file  When you open a company file in multi-user mode, you see an error:You're trying to work with a company file located on another computer, and this copy of QuickBooks can't reach the server on that computer (H202).You're trying to work with a company file located on another computer, and that computer needs additional installation and setup. (H101, H303, and H505).It appears that the QuickBooks software on computer [server name] is set up to allow shared connections to the company file, but the QuickBooks software on your computer is unable to communicate with it. (H202).Most often it's an H202 error which suggests that the program can't reach the server on that computer (NAS location). Why would the NAS location become invisible / unreachable once multi-user mode is on?  I really appreciate your expert brainstorm and ideas.

  • Airport Extreme N problem accessing some websites

    Hello,
I just installed an Airport Extreme N base station. When I go to the following website to access documentation, it hangs. When I put my old Dlink router back in place, I can get to the website and access the documentation just fine. I have no idea whats going on. Can some of the other Airport Extreme N users access the following symantec corp documentation site?
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/documentation.jsp?language=english&view =manuals&pid=15143
When you right click and try to save the .pdf files it just downloads a 0byte file. When you try to click on the .pdf to open it, it opens with nothing.
When I take the Airport Extreme out and hook my Dlink DI-624 router in, no problems opening the document or saving to my laptop.
Any help or insight would be appreciated!

No one seems to have an answer to this one yet - have you found anything? The thread below seems to be the same issue:

I'll keep working at a solution and will post if I can find one.

The troubleshooting C17 is the specific article.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
This is generally a Lion error.. and you will need 5.6 utility to get access to the disk area.
So download the real utility. Run it instead of v6 toy version.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go to the manual setup, disk page and click on disconnect all users.. that will unmount all users connected to the disk and allow it to start working. But there are a number of other issues that are possible cause. Pondini lists some of them.
