Airport disk ≠ WD My Book 1TB

I hooked up my airport extreme today and was excited to use airport disk. My maxtor one touch 200 gig drive works with it and mounts although it does not show up in the setup utility. My Western Digital My Book drive shows up in the setup utility but does not show up anywhere else and does not mount.
What gives?

In this case with a terrabyte drive im sad to say no it will not work with the airport extreme N base station simply due to the software built in on the drive so they may appear as a single drive
*a few options you could do is set up mirror raid although thatd provide a good form of backup after the first 500gig drive goes down thatd defeat the purpose of getting the TB drive as well as apple only supports using a external drive with a single drive and partition formatted to the standard fat32 or MacOS extended or so on
*you may want to look through the linksys website though they've got some equipment you might use thatd enable you to share that tb drive

  • RAID disk as Airport Disk

    Hi
I wanted to buy one of the new Western Digital My Book Pro II (2 x 1TB Dual Disks) which come with a RAID Manager for RAID 1 Mirroring.
While it will obviously work ok if I attach it directly to my Mac, will this still work if I use it as an Airport Disk? Does the RAID Manager software have to be running the whole time to keep the mirroring happening?
    Thanks

If this an "embedded" RAID, you have no control of that.

  • Time Machine backing up an Airport Disk

I've read that Time Machine will back up mac journaled formated external drives, unless you exclude them. That's all well and good, but my situation is a little different. Here's my setup.
    15" MBP, 120GB HDD
    AEBS
RAID 0 1TB WD My Book Pro II drive on the network as an airport disk.
500 GB WD Pro drive on firewire 800.
The 500 gig is going to be used as my *time machine* drive. The *1TB Airport Disk* drive is mostly media. The only thing I want backed up is some important document folders as well as my music folder. But when I go to exclude the folders I don't want backedup on my 1TB airport disk drive, I find that the entire contents of the drive isn't selectable to be excluded. I don't really have any space on my internal drive to store these files. All drives are mac journal extended formatted.

    UPDATE
I tried using iTimeMachine to see if it will allow Time Machine to access my AP Disk. I believe it just runs the terminal command that activates the default setting for Time Machine and network compatibility. Either way, when opening up Time Machine's preferences, I now see my 1TB drive as a drive I can back up to. However, unlike the thousands of threads out there, I don't want to back up to it, I want to back up some folder from it. As usual, when opening up the exclusion options, all of the folders on my AP Disk are greyed out, which tells me that Time Machine won't back up that disk.
    Thoughts?

  • How do I set up Airport Extreme Airport Disk as Central Media Storage when I have Directv, Windows and Mac needing access?

I have an always on PC in my living room, but I want the macbook pro to have the same media without taking up the space.  iTunes Shared lacks the sorting features of having the library directly associated.  What I want to do is setup a hard drive on my AEBS to house all my media.
I have a 120GB SSD on my PC in the LR. (with an 80GB drive I may put with it for extra space if needed)
    A 250GB MBP
    A 2TB drive (installed in a USB/eSATA enclosure)
    A 1TB drive
    A 500GB usb WD Passport
I use iTunes for Movies, Music, Podcasts
    I use Picasa for Pictures
I want to house these large libraries on the AEBS Airport Disk and have the MBP and PC access the media.  I ideally want iTunes to identify that as the iTunes Media Library for both the MBP and PC.  I haven't found a good run down of how this would work.  Especially since I want to make sure Directv can access the media as well as the PC and MBP.
I will store all my media on the 2TB, I will use the 1TB to backup all the media in a safe, and the 500GB I want to split for Time Machine and Windows backup.  With all my media off those drives, 500GB should be enough space to keep backups for a while to restore programs and what not from.
    Thanks for any help.

You may want to revisit your strategy to using an AirPort Disk for Time Machine backups and that is because Apple does not support this. If your backups are critical to you, then I would strongly recommend that you reconsider using another destination source option.

  • Airport Disk access from the internet via Windows Vista

I have an Air Port Extreme base station and am sharing an external hard disk connected to it by the USB port. Local network connections work well with both mac's and windows machines. I am able to connect to the airport disk from the internet with my mac's fine. afp://ip address. How can I connect to this same air port disk from the internet with my PC's which run Vista? There must be a way? I have tried endlessly for many hours. any help would be appreciated.

This works fine from local network, but not from a remote location from the internet. Maybe my syntax is incorrect. My workgroup name in the Airport Utility is "Apple"
Connected locally "\\APPLE1\My Book 500GB" works and makes a connection from the map network drive windows pane. \\Apple1\my book 500gb also connects if entered from IE, again locally. What would be the correct syntax to access it from the web?
From my mac on the web afp://"ip address/ Works!!
Syntax I've tried from remote or internet: smb://??.204.218.??/apple ,smb://??.204.218.??/apple1 ,
smb://??.204.218.??/my book 500gb. IP address used is my external ip address.
    I'm still missing something??

  • Connect to airport disk when through internet

    Hello,
I have a mac book running 10.6.8  At home I have an apple "airport extreme" router with a WD external hard drive connected via USB, the disk works fine at home.   I know it is possible to connect to the external hard drive(airport disk)   via the internet when I'm not at home.  But I can't seem to find any guidance to my situation.  I also have a mobileme account and I thought I should be able to do it with "back to my mac"  but I can't get either method to work.
Any help, advice or links would be appreciated!!

You have at least two routes to be able to access the AirPort Disk from the Internet: 1) Back to My Mac (BTMM) / MobileMe (easiest), or 2) Configure the AirPort for Port Mapping.
I suggest trying the BTMM method first.
As you already know BTMM is tied to an individual's MobileMe account.
Let's go over your BTMM setup, just to make sure something wasn't missed.
    BTMM - General Requirements
    OS X Leopard 10.5.4+
Active MobileMe account. Each Mac & the AirPort router, that will be relying on BTMM, needs to be configured with the same account.
A publicly reachable IP address for your AirPort router.
A router that supports either NAT-PMP or UPnP. Note: All AirPorts supports NAT-PMP.
    BTMM - Basic Communication Flow
For a computer connected to the Internet via a router, BTMM "asks" the router for its configuration information. For a router, like your AirPort, that uses NAT-PMP, BTMM will ask the router to assign arbitrary public ports. In turn, the router will provide these port assignments (& the router's Public IP address) back to BTMM.
BTMM then sends this information to the MobileMe account. In background MobileMe updates a special set of DNS entries to be used by BTMM. These entries are then made available to all BTMM clients using your MobileMe account. When a computer, with BTMM enabled, uses your MobileMe credentials, it automatically retrieves a list of all other computers/routers that are registered with the same account. All these devices should then appear under the SHARED section of the Finder.
When attempting to connect to a remote computer (or router), BTMM creates a secure connection to that remote device using the information from the MobleMe account.
Once the connection is established, the devices can then communicate with each other.
For a router, the key is that if the ISP doesn't offer you a publicly reachable IP address then BTMM won't work. You will then have to look for an alternative solution, like BackToMyPC or LogmeIn.
    On both routers (Apple Only)
Using the AirPort Utility, verify the following:
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup > Internet > NAT
Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol (enabled)
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup > Advanced > MobileMe
Click the plus button to add your MobileMe account information. Any HDDs attached to the AirPort (or both the Time Capsule's internal HDD and attached USB HDD) will now appear in the SHARED section of the Finder on BTMM-enabled computers using the same MobileMe account.

  • Can't copy large files to AirPort Disk Using Windows 7

    Hi Everyone,
I'm positng because I'm unable to copy large files to an AirPort Disk using Windows 7.  I have the following setup.
    AirPort Extreme:
    - Firmware version: 7.6.1
    - Airport disks secured by password
    - No guest access allowed
    - Airport Disk Preferences:
      - Automatically discover airport disks is enabled
      - Show Airport Disks in the system tray is enabled
    External Drive:
    - Western Digital 500 GB MyBook External Drive connected to Airport Extreme thru USB
    - FAT32 Formated
    Computers:
    - 2 Toshiba Proteges, Both with 4GB RAM
    - Both have Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1, 64-bit version
    - (Sorry we have no MacBooks at home, just iPhones and iPods!)
    Airport Utility:
    - Version  5.6.1
    Airport Disk Preferences Utility:
    - Version  1.5.5.3
A week ago, I was able to copy over large files (videos <4GB in size) to the drive.  Now, when I try to copy over these large files to the drive, the copy dialog box hangs.  I receive a message stating that Windows is calculating the size, but then it doesn't copy over.  Windows then gives me a message that it is unable to copy to the drive.  When I test the drive connection by copying a small text file over, it copies over quickly and seamlessly.  This problem occurs on both computers.
I am able to do the following with the drive connection:
    - Read files
    - Change file names
    - Copy files from the drive to my computer
    - See the contents of drive
I've tried all the combinations of the following with no success:
    - Turning off Windows Search
    - Downgrading the firmware
    - Reconfiguring wireless adapter
    - Rebooting computer
    - Rebooting wireless router
    - Rebooting external drive
The drive seems to be working fine except for when I want to copy <2GB files over to the drive.  Does anyone have a solution that seems to work?
    Thanks!

I'm happy to report that, after reformatting the drive to HFS+ (aka Mac OS Extended), there are no problems writing/copying large or small files to the AirDisk drive.  I'm also happy to report that I am copying to the drive at a rate of roughly 4MB/s.
As I mentioned earlier, the only catch is that I am unable to plug the external drive directly into a Windows computer via the USB port as Windows is unable to read HFS+ formatted drives.  (I can, however, plug the drive into a Mac computer as they can read HFS+ formatted drives.  The only problem is that I don't own any Macs at this time!  LOL!)
You're probably wondering how I formatted the external drive to HFS+ since I don't own any Macs.  (Windows only allows you to format drives in exFAT, FAT, NTFS and the like.)  That is a good question.  Basically, I downloaded an open source formatting tool called, Gparted, which allows you to format any USB drive to any major file format system.  Since Gparted is an open source tool, it is a little cumbersome to use. Once you figure out how to use it, it is a cinch to format the drive to HFS+.  (Of course, an easier method would be to borrow a friend's mac, plug the drive into their mac, and format it to HFS+ using their mac.)
For a step-by-step guide on how to solve this problem, see the steps below:
    1) Backup all data from external drive
        a) Fortunately, I have a 1TB ultraportable USB drive which has enough space to backup all data on the drive
    2) Format the external drive to HFS+ using one of the methods below
        a) Plug it into a Mac and format it
         b) Use Gparted (free) to format it
    3) Plug the drive back into the Airport Extreme
    4) Start copying files over to your networked drive!
I hope this helps you! Cheers!

  • Airport Disk Utility does not show up as icon on menu bar

Since I upgraded to Leopard, the icon for Airport Disk Utility which used to appear in the menu bar at the top of the screen has gone away. Any ideas please? Perhaps it's a coincidence but after the install of Leopard, the Airport Disk Utility application disappeared! I reinstalled it from the Airport Express Base Station SW and it has appeared in Applications again. I can start it up, select 'Show Airport Disks in the Menu Bar' but they don't appear ...
    Any ideas please?

I believe the disk Utility is now incorporated under FINDER/ SHARED / Airport network name. There should be an ejection/mount arrow beside the disk name. In my case I have two USB disks attached 1: "My Book" [NSTF format, 2: G-DRIVE [MAC format]. The "My Book" always mounted automatically but the"G-DRIVE" would not.
    The work around was to
    1. Connect the G-DRIVE with a wire directly to your computer [I used the firewire]. It will mount and give you an icon under FINDER/DEVICES. The hard drive was actively working on something for about 2 minutes (you could hear it).
    2. After the G-DRIVE hard drive stopped making noise. I Ejected it with the arrow beside the Disk name in the DEVICES Section.
    3. Then I plugged the G-DRIVE back into the Hub connected to the single Airport Extreme USB connection.
    4. Now both Hard Drives showed up under SHARED /Network name With the Eject arrow beside them.
    5. I verified there use by transferring a file and using Backup 3.1.2 (ver374) to backup my documents to the G-DRIVE hard drive.
Note: I had to go this once when I installed Leopard 10.5 and had to do it again when IK upgraded to 10.5.1
    Hope this helps

  • Problem with Airport Disk and Leopard

I connected an external drive (1tb MyBook) to my Airport Extreme base station. The transfer rate was a bit slow but otherwise the disk was working fine, shared between a MacBook Pro and a PC. Then I updated my system from 10.5.0 to 10.5.3 and haven't been able to access the disk since. The drive shows up in the left pane of the finder window but when I try to access it the wireless network goes down. I've restarted both the disk and the base station, checked for software updates, gone through the settings on the Airport Utility, all to no avail. Can't access the disk from the PC any more either.
In the previous system there was an Airport Disk utility (it had a little icon on the finder menu bar), but I can't find this in the new system version. Help!??

Since you are able to get it to run without an airport card, I would backup your data and erase and install. If after an erase and install without adding back any peripherals, airport doesn't work as expected, and you apply all the airport software updates, then I'd say the airport card is faulty. See my backup FAQ*:

  • Ayone used Intego Personal Backup with Leopard and an Airport Disk

I have been very successfully using Intego's Personal Backup program with OSX 10.4.10 on an intel iMac and a MacbookPro with an Iomega 750GB hard drive linked to an Airport Extreme. I've set the computers to automatically switch on nightly (via energy saver) 5 minutes before the Intego backup script is set to run. The script runs in the background and automatically logs on to the Airport Disk and selects the backup folder. After finishing the backup the script then quits the program and shutsdown the computer. It's very convenient and neat as it only backsup files that have changed and they are full usable copies rather than incremental backups.
Has anyone tried this using Leopard? Could this be a potential solution to the lack of Time Machine being used with Airport Disks?

    I've tried it, without success.
I have a clean install of Leopard. I bought a new Airport Extreme and Iomega UltraMax 1TB drive to go with Leopard, so this part of the setup is all new to me. I have been using Personal Backup, without problem, for ages.
What I find is that when I select the Airport Disk as the destination drive, the Spinning Beachball of Death starts and I have to Force Quit Personal Backup. A real shame as I really wanted to use the Airport Disk as a common disk between my iMac and iBook, and Personal Backup seemed the obvious way to get the iMac files on to the Airport Disk (the iBook only needs read-only access).
If anyone gets this going, I'd love to find out how.

  • Partitioned Airport Disk - Connection Failed.  Why?

    Hello,
I have a Toshiba 1TB USB disk that I have partitioned in two. It works perfectly both as a direct connection to my MacBook Pro, as well as through a Belkin network USB hub that plugs into my router. Since the network USB hub requires me to run its software if I want to access the disks, I figured I'd take all that out of the equation and plug the disk directly into the Airport Extreme I bought not too long ago. However, it seems that the connection is flaky. Initially I see the Airport under "Shared" and it seems as I can click on it and mount it and see both drives, but invariably, as I click either one, it thinks about it for a while and returns a "Connection Failed". The "Connect As" button doesn't do anything. Occasionally it even causes issues to the AE itself, to where I need to restart it, or unplug the USB cable to clear the amber light. So...I'm really confused at which part of my USB disk my AE doesn't like. It's formatted for a Mac and it works perfectly in every other configuration other than Airport disk....thoughts? Oh, have the latest firmware for everything.

I get this too, but it fails to remember my password. I have removed all the keychain passwords pertaining to the AEBS, as well as the plist for for the utility, but no luck.
It's not a big problem, only my airport disk is an iomega one that has an auto-shutdown facility if it's not used for 5 minutes, and it won't shutdown until I have connected to it at least once.
I'm on 10.5.4, but it's not showing up on the OS list yet

  • WD My Book 1TB and Snow Leopard

I've installed Snow Leopard on two Macbooks, and now neither one of them can read my WD My Book 1TB External Drive. It says "Invalid index key", and disk utility tries to rebuild the "catalog B-tree" but fails. The drive is 3 months old at most. It will show up in Disk Utility, but it won't mount so that you can see data.
    HELP!
Suggestions are most welcome. I have 500gb of data on this puppy that I really really really don't want to lose...

    Hello.
I've installed Snow Leopard on my brand new Macbook Pro, and I had EXACTLY the same problem, not on one, but on TWO of my external Hard drives! One of them several years old connecting in IDE, the other one only a few days old, connecting in SATA! Both of them are Seagate's 500GBs.
I'm running a data recovery software right now, and it's working this back, but since it happened on two completely different disks in such a short period of time (less than a week), and since it looks like other people are having the same problem, I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't a deeper problem in the way Snow Leopard is handling the external Hard Drives...
I'm now pretty scared to connect my others Hard Drives to this computer, cause I don't want it to turn them all down! Maybe I'm just cursed, but the coincidence would be really big!
Are there other people experiencing the same problem? I'm wondering if there aren't others who didn't bother speaking in here, because blaming the hard drive would look like the most logical thing to do, like you just did in this thread, so most people wouldn't think of anything but bad luck for that...
And are there any way to check if there are more occurrences of this specific problem under Snow Leopard, or to check directly if there isn't a problem in the way Snow Leopard deals with external Hard Drives?
I'm looking forward for a third hard drive to fail. I'll tell you if this happens.
    Cadwallader.
PS : The oldest of the two Hard Drives worked as external under Tiger for three year, never had a problem...
