Airport Disk with Bonjour

I have a Western Digital "MyBook" Tb drive that I used to have connected on my AirPort Extreme. I have a MacPro as well as 2 PC's that were sharing this MyBook disk just fine using Bonjour. The Bonjour app used AirPort Disks to automatically "offer" the disk as a resource when the computer restarts, or whenever it becomes available. I was sharing using accounts. i.e. the username and password had to be entered to access the shared resource.
Recently, the MyBook began to disconnect from the Bonjour for no apparent reason. I would log the disk back on and connectivity would be there, but then it would just disconnect again after 10 minutes or so.
So I connected the MyBook directly to the MacPro using firewire and just used the 'Sharing' utility and now access my files "\\MacPro\MyBook".
It doesn't disconnect anymore.
But I do notice a file write delay every once in awhile.
Can someone tell me which method is preferred and what pieces need to be ironed out for most efficiency?

Does the new Airport Express N (I acquired one recently) have Airport Disk functionality? I tried to connect an external USB hard drive to my Airport Express but nothing shows up within Airport Utility.
Sorry, but no. The new 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), like its predecessor, will only support a single USB printer on its USB port.

  • Leopard and Airport Disk with accounts

    Question:
Has anyone have the latest firmware update on the AEBS-N and with Leopard OS with Airport Disk accounts working?
If you have downgrade firmware on AEBS-N with Airport disk set up with accounts how are you making it work?
At this time I am only getting my hard drive and not accounts showing on left sidebar.
The only way I been able to change accounts if I do a manual "connect to server" (alt-K). First I eject the shared drive on the left sidebar. Then click Alt and K key at the same time and typed in one of my accounts and password in. There must be a better way.

I have done that, but my problem is not that I cannot see my connected drive it is when I create accounts it still only shows the shared folder on that connected drive. So, I created two password protected accounts "A" and "B" and then there is a shared folder. Now prior to leopard when I was connected I would be able to see the shared folder and my respective folder, "A". Now when I connect I only see the share drive. This is a problem because I have two users in my household and I want to back information to each respective accounts/password protected folders but that is not happening because all we see is the shared folder.
What I saw prior on my drive connected to AEBS. A "SHARED" folder, "USERS" folder which contained the separate folders/accounts created through AEBS.
Now all I see is the "SHARED" folder.

  • Accessing Airport Disk with OS 9

Does anyone know how I can access a network airport disk using OS 9?

You can't. To access the drive you need Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later.

  • Why can I not access my Airport Extreme with Bonjour from my MacBook Pro?

Just like the title says. I the Airport Extreme does not show up under Bonjour in Safari. I can access it from the network but not Bonjour. Weird.

Bonjour, as you may already know, is Apple's implementation of zero-configuration networking.
It takes three things to work:
Host Addressing - It requires network devices that support Link-Local addressing, i.e., self-addressing on either, or both, IPv4 & IPv6. ARP is used to verify that no other device on the local network is using the same address. For Macs, self assigned IPv4 Link-Local addressing became available with OS X 10.0. IPv6 always supported this feature. Verify that you have IPv6 Link-Local, as a minimum, running on your Mac. System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi or Ethernet (as appropriate) > Advanced > TCP/IP tab > Configure IPv6 > Either "Automatically" or "Link-local only."
Host Naming - Device naming is dependent on Multicast DNS (mDNS). This is the ".local" name for the device. It will create one unless you enter one in System Preferences > Sharing > Computer Name. mDNS will issue a Query command to see if any other device is using the same name. mDNS is available with all versions of OS X. Windows devices would require Bonjour for Windows. mDNS requires UDP port 5353 to be opened on the device's software firewall. Note: This is not the same as the router's firewall.
Service Discovery - Requires the first two items to be working and available. Note: A problematic /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist file may prevent your Mac from advertising its services.

  • Why can I not access my Airport Extreme with Bonjour

I have the setting checked but no matter what I the Airport Extreme doesn't show up in Bonjour. The Airport Extreme is connected to an XFinity cable modem/wireless router. The Airport Extreme is working perfectly, streaming a connected USB 3.0 2TB HD. Everything seems to work just fine except I cannot just put the IP address in and access it from Safari.
The Airport Extreme is not using DHCP and I am letting the XFINITY cable modem be the DHCP server.

Please check out the following Gigaom article. Although it references a Time Capsule, it works equally well for the AirPort Extreme base station.

  • Data corruption with Airport Disk file sharing

There is another long thread on the Airport Disk, and I am not sure if this is the same problem. My situation is that my file server died recently, and I am looking for its replacement. Airport Disk with my new base station appears ideal because I have a 300GB disk from my dead file server and a USB disk enclosure. I connected the disk to my iMac and formatted it to HFS. While still connected to my iMac, I copied over my iTunes library. This was the second time trying out the airport disk, so I created /Shared and /Users/username to work with file sharing with accounts. I then ejected the disk and connected to my airport base station (gigE, 7.2.1 firmware). My first test was to run a recursive diff between the two iTunes libraries. There were some files that differed, so I ran the diff again and a different set of files were identified as differing! I disconnected all users and moved the disk back to my iMac. I ran the diff again, and there were no differing files!
I haven't yet had time to investigate more, and I am wondering if others have seen similar symptoms.
    Dan

    I have the same issue.
Plus, in my case, two disks appear on my desktop, even though I have no partition. One is named the same as my disk, the other is named the same as the user account for the disk on the Airport Extreme.

  • Airport Extreme with Airport USB Disk issues - Dont give up just yet...

Just a heads up for anyone who is having issues with accessing an Airport disk with the latest firmware.
After calling Apple support as i was convinced my AEBS was faulty, i have since discovered that if and HFS+ disk cannot be varified and repaired successfully in Disk Utility, it would lock up my AEBS totally. My wireless would drop out and nothing would work any longer untill I turned the power off and on again.
I was able to correct the issue with the USB HDD by booting with the Leopard CD and using Disk Utility in Mac OS X setup. Trying the same thing when booting from the Macbook HDD would result in a 'failed to unmount' error.
Before anyone has a fit and trys to return their AEBS with a similar issue i suggest trying the above or another USB HDD. It just might save you the $49 that i paid as a result of being out of the 90 days of support on my AEBS and Macbook.
FYI, contrary to the technical requirements i was sent by the Apple service agent i spoke with, my Airport Disk IS working with 2 partitions. 1 HFS+ and the other a Windows partiton (i cant remember if its FAT32 or NTFS. My HDD is at home)
I have a collegue at work who was having similar issues with a FAT32 USB HDD on his AEBS but we have just discovered that the HFS+ HDD that i used to test my AEBS with, worked fine on his also. We are yet to find out if his HDD is faulty at this stage. Ill keep you all posted on what we find.
SO, at this stage it would be resonable to say that the AEBS doesnt handle corrupted HDD's very well. (IE it totally locks up and the wireless drops out)

That used to be a problem on 7.2.x. Now 7.3.1 can fix some minor disk problems (such as disk not unmounted correctly).
Since I upgraded to 7.3.1, I haven't once taken my USB hard drive out to be repaired on my Mac.

  • Airport Extreme (last generation) and Airport disk

    Simple quesion (I hope)...
does anyone know if one can do airport disk with a last generation (802.11g) AEBS?
    Thanks,
    Bill

Afraid not. The USB port on that generation is for printer share only.

  • TM backups to password protected Airport disk

I had trouble getting the following configuration working:
    TM backups
    to an Airport disk
with the Disk Password (as opposed to Airport password) option
of two Macs (iMac and UMBP)
When I went from Airport PW to Disk PW, the Mac I ran Airport Utility on worked fine, the other got a Backup Disk No Available error. Yes, I deleted the TM plist and restarted.
When I went back to Airport PW, the Mac I did it from worked fine, the other required a combination of mounting/unmounting the disk, restarts, plist deletion, and changing of the backup disk in TM Preferences, but eventually it worked.
The first case (Disk PW) never worked for both machines.
    Has it worked for anyone?

Yes, USB connected to Airport Extreme.
Drive is formatted correctly and worked for 2 weeks. Problem came when I tried to switch from Airport PW to disk PW. I did this from the UMBP and I could not get the iMac to work, kept saying "Disk is not available." Tried deleting TM plist, tried restarting, tried manually mounting drive and sparse image.
When I went back to Airport PW, did so from iMac, then could not get UMBP to work, same Not Available error. After restarting, deleting plist, mounting/unmounting, and some other unremembering things, it is now working again.

  • Airport Disk lag

When it was Tiger, I could watch a movie in my Airport disk.
Now in Leopard, it is very laggy and I can't watch a movie.
I think this is a bug which can be temporarily fixed if I do something...
Any help will be great! Thanks.

Same here… I have my iTunes library on an external LaCie that's connected into the Airport. And the content on their is also synced into AppleTV. In Tiger this worked fantastically.
Ever since I upgraded to Leopard, I am randomly getting the grey exclamation in iTunes for tracks iTunes "can't find" - but when you double click iTunes plays. In everything too, there is lags when you start playing songs, video, podcasts… essentially anything that is on the Airport Disk.
I was so excited to hear about Time Machine when it came out because of this setup I had with Airport Disk. But, to then that functionality dropped out or disappeared at some point before the final release which leads me to believe that there is some unresolved issue with the Airport Disk functionality and Leopard. The way Airport Disk is behaving now in iTunes is further evidence.
I really hope there is a fix soon for this.
It's getting so the only reliable way to watch my video or listen to my audio content is on AppleTV because there is no lag when the content resides on it's hard drive - which is a pain, as I used to love not being tethered to one device in one area of my house. The way this is behaving in Leopard is almost making me want to go back to Tiger… Cause I sure as heck don't have enough space on the hard drive to put the music and video back on to it.
It feels like we've gone two steps backwards with Airport Disk with Leopard.

  • Can see but not browse to Airport disk, also cannot print in Bonjour

I suspect this may be related to a firewall issue or perhaps the way my corporate PC is set up (logged into Domain with VPN to Internet. What else might cause:
Windows Exporer to hang and crash when I try to browse to Airport Disk which is clearly visible in WE
nability to print, Bonjour or otherwise tothe USB attached printer in Airport. Macs work just fine
    Thanks in advance

  • Files/folders not showing up with Airport Disk but are there?

I've recently bought the Airport Extreme, I was all excited about Airport Disk but there is a weird, extremly annoying bug.
On my USB hard drive connected using Airport Disk, I have a folder called music. When I open this folder, OS X starts reading the directory and files/folders show up one by one, but then it just all disappears - and the folder shows nothing. In Windows, it shows nothing at all in the folder. However, when I reconnect the drive using USB to my MacBook Pro, all my music is there and I can see all the files.
I have a feeling this is something to do with this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305040
as I have German and Japanese music files imported by iTunes which are not named in English (ie the filenames are encoded in Japanese etc etc)
Another strange thing is, in Windows, if I type the direct path to a folder (which is inside the supposed empty folder) I will be able to access it.
    What's going on Apple?...
    Anyone else got this issue?...
    Thanks
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Everyone,
I was experiencing the same. on the XP box it just wouldnt show anything period and on the Mac, the finder would briefly display the contents of the drive before disappearing. Spoke to Tier 2 and they thought I should reformat the drive, since he thought it likely that due to severing the drives connection that the format was corrupt...
I did manage to fix it myself and I'll tell you how. First I hardwired the drive via USB to the Mac. noticed an item called FROM which had no size, no date modified and type was --. I deleted the RECYCLED folder (which results when you delete something from the drive thru XP)
then i hardwired it to the PC. deleted the "FROM" folder which in this case was a file folder, and 237MB approx in size. I also deleted the ".DSStore" and ".Trashes" files. .DSStore is basically the icon cache and .Trashes is when you delete something on the airdisk from the Mac. reconnected the drive and POOF! it worked Problem is now solved.
So to summate, i think in my case it was more the discrepancy between the FROM not showing up as anything on the Mac, versus it being a full fledged folder to windows xp. i just thought i would pass this along...

  • Airport Disk Logon Problems with SyncbackSE

Hei - looking for a little assistance with this...
Essentially I am having trouble working out what username/password I should use to access my airport disk, and what settings need to be selected on Airport Utilities.
I have an Airport Extreme setup with a Maxtor One touch USB drive.
I have two PCs running XP/Vista - boh can access the disk through the Airport Base Station Agent. My problem is that I am attempting to use this drive for synchronised back up using SyncbackSE. Syncback is syncing "My Documents\Music" with "\\10.0.1.1\MaxtorOneTouch\Music". This gives an 'invalid password' error...
Syncback offers the option to enter a username/password for network drives, but i am unsure what this should be. Under Airport Utils -> Disks -> File Sharing I have ticked Enable File Sharing, Secued shared disks with device password and chosen read/wite acess for guest access. Should this be enough to access my drive with username: \\10.0.1.1\guest, password: <default ax password>?
Do i need to use username: \\10.0.1.1\MaxtorOneTouch\guest?
Am I going about this the wrong way entirely?
Any advice? Many thanks in advance.
    Neil

I am having the same problem authenticating an acronis backup to an airport disk. What should populate the fields of username/password? I can't find this information anywhere.

  • AirPort Disk - Issue with Windows Vista Ultimate

I setup an AirPort Extreme network, with a shared USB Drive and so far I've only found one issue.
When attempting to create new files and renaming them, or rename pre-existing files on the shared USB Drive using Windows Vista Ultimate I get the following Yes/No dialog:
"The Z:\ folder does not exist. The file may have been moved or deleted. Do you want to create it?"
Then there's information about the mapped drive. If I click "Yes" in the dialog, then the dialog goes away for a moment then pops back up. I can't create a new file directly on the shared AirPort Disk, nor can I modify or create and rename new files on the disk without getting stuck in the loop.
I can, however, create a new file locally on the Vista box and copy it up, and I can even create a new directory locally with files and copy them up without issue.
Now, the issue does not happen when I use my MacBook or my XP machine. This issues seems to be a Windows Vista issue only, and I haven't seen anyone else reporting it.
Here's information about the disk share implementation:
    - The disk is password protected (turning on accounts really breaks the ability of Windows Vista to work with the disk)
    - The disk is Mac Formatted with Case Sensitivity, and Journaling
This works like a top for OS X and Windows XP, just not Vista. I'd like to getting working properly for all machines.
If anyone's got some advice on this one, I'd love to hear it.

Here's a little more information regarding the issue:
    - It's an AirPort Extreme Wireless Router with Firmware ver. 7.1
    - The Windows Vista Ultimate PC has the most recent Microsoft patches to-date, and has the most recent Apple Airport Utilities Software to-date.

  • Airport Extreme with USB Disk

It is stupid why I bought the Airport Extreme. I thought I could connect my speakers to it, and then I realize I can't, so I tried to set it up with a USB Disk.
I am running Windows Vista and the Firmware is 7.4.1.
I can see the disk in my Airport Utility, but when I try to use the Airport Disk Preferences, it didn't show there. And if I try to map a network drive with //10.0.1.1 I couldn't connect to it either.
Mind sharing your thoughts on that?

    ksquare77,
Sorry I didn't have an external hard drive plugged up to my Airport Extreme at the time of my first post. But I did go and find it and hooked it up. I also grabbed my Wife's Vista Computer. I was however able to connect to it and read and write to the disk. So I'm trying to figure out what snag were running into on your side.
By any change are you running the latest version of the AirPort Utility on Vista I believe the latest is 5.4.1 you can download it here if you so need to http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/airportutility54 1.html
After installation it put a little icon down by the clock and I had to left click on it and it asks me for a User name and password. I thought then it would just open a window with the drive but I was mistaken, it did however mount them in (Computer) or the (My Computer), Equivalent I'm not by my wife's computer at this time to get the exact name. And in there I was able to just double click the drive and was on it.
Also a Couple of things I would check are in (Airport Utility)/(Manual Setup)/ (Disks) tab on the top/ (File Sharing) tab in that window. Check to make sure (Enable file sharing) is checked, And that (Workgroup) matches the workgroup your computer is on.
Hope this helps with your issue.
