Airport Drives Constantly Spinning up

I have a USB drive hooked up to my Airport Extreme. The drive spins down when not in use.
I go to my finder and connect to my basestation drive, and the drive spins up. At this point I now have the little "eject" icon sitting next to name of my basestation in the sidebar of my finder window. All is good so far.
If I do not disconnect/eject the drive from computer, the USB drive connected to my basestation will constantly spin up and down every 20-30mins or so. It's like the computer is checking to see if it is there or something. I know this does't happen drives directly connected via USB to my computer. Is there a fix for this?
I'm running 10.8. Airport is running 7.6.1.

That is fine.. but I would like to also know if the problem is related to how powernap works.
What OS is the MBP running?
Can you put drives to sleep with specific setting. Even if you set it to something other than default just to try what happens.
In the end.. the problem is Apple do not provide end users with low level access to the router. The later the airport utility the more stuff they removed.. you do not even have a log. So when these issues crop up it is often users who solve it with info like which firmware has the problem.
I can get you a bit deeper into the system but it won't be easy. You may need to do TCPdumps via managed switch or hub which is pretty much in the field of the expert rather than garden user.. and even if you find the problem there is no reason for apple to provide a solution.

  • Hard drive constantly spinning up and down when asleep

    Hi all,
    I have a problem with an external USB 2.0 hard drive connected to my Mac mini (late 2012).
    When I put the computer to sleep the drive spins up to speed, stops, then immediately starts to spin up again. This goes on and on.
    I understand that drives will periodically spin up when asleep for spotlight indexing etc. However this seems like strange behaviour, it just repeats spinning up and down in an endless cycle.
    I have had the drive for a while now, as my time machine backup. Interestingly this problem only started after I rearranged my desk when I set up a second monitor. I have a USB 3.0 drive (my scratch disk) that behaves normally.
    I have drives set to not sleep in preferences.
    I have searched around but can only find posts about people not wanting to wait for drives to spin up when they open finder etc.
    What do you think? Could the drive be on its way out? It is a Samsung spinpoint f3 1tb in an Iomega enclosure, for information...

    Hi BDAqua,
    I should have noticed this earlier but it appears the problem is with the mini waking from sleep and thus causing the drives to wake.
    When I put the mini top sleep (without the external drives powered on) it constantly wakes and sleeps. The displays dont come back on (untiul you click the mouse or hit a key etc.) but you can hear the internal drive spin up and the sleep light comes on, then goes back to blinking until it wakes again.
    I have realised that it must be due to the second monitor that I have connected via the mini display port. It is connected using a mini display port to hdmi cable I bought from play.com. Something to do with the  display and thunderbolt is casuing the sleep function to misbehave, I think.
    Here is the console log that was created after sleeping the mini, allowing it to go through its weird sleep/wake cycle then fully waking it up again.
    Hope that makes sense, it is late and I am tired!

  • External Drive Constantly spinning up...

    Good Morning,
    I have a perfectly functioning LaCie External which I use ONLY as a Super Duper Clone. The Clone function is done every evening at 6:30 pm.
    Here's the problem - When I save a file locally on my iMac (which would normally bring up the Save Dialog instantly), I get the spinning ball while the External spins up. Not a huge problem, but is slows me down and it's aggravating!
    Is there any way I can tell the iMac (Snow Leopard) to stop looking at that Drive - except for Super Duper?

    I believe that I have located the answer - and that is - No, you can't stop the drive from spinning up randomly even if you're not trying to access it.

  • Disc Drive constantly spinning

    My Disc Drive spins 80% of the time that the laptop is open, and even sometimes when it is closed. this has been happening for probably 6 months now I just never thought it was that big of a deal, but the last thing I want is for it to break. it trys to spin even if there isnt a disc in it..
    any thoughts on what it could be or a safe way to try to fix it myself? I dont want to send it into apple they told me it was like a tear 3 repair or something and would cost wayy more than i care to spend.
    I have replaced my HD before so I am familiar and not afraid to open up the mbp and work with it.

    Just a shot in the dark, but you might try a cleaning disc in it in case it thinks it's seeing a disc when none is there.
    You could also check its flex cable for any damage.
    Otherwise, not sure why it would be doing this. As a last resort, you could replace he optical drive with a new one or use an external drive.

  • Drives constantly spinning down and then up again - poor hard drives!

    My mac pro seems like it wants to kill my hard drives - I hear it spinning down drives and then within 60 seconds it will spin them up again. This happens over and over again.
    I even have tried taking the "put drives to sleep" option off but it still happens.
    1) I would LIKE to spin drives down and keep them down unless needed to save energy - can I find out why in the world the system keeps spining them up again?
    2) If not, how can I keep them from spinning down at all?
    Constant start/stop cycles can't be good for my system.
    I've got a total of 4 drives - system drive, 2 drives in raid 1 and then a 4th drive. I have no idea which (one or more) is spinning down

    You know, it sometimes helps to be specific.
    Drive make, model, even firmware.
    Seagate had a bunch of drives last year that would take 90 minutes to wake from sleep that drove people crazy (but seemed to be mostly or more common with iMac).
    Hardware Monitor has a warning and probably something in the readme (those things you are suppose to read before installing?).
    Stripped down system and minimal extras really does prove to to work better, fewer "side effects" and less trouble.
    And when you do have your system installed, backup. Don't use it for anything else. I have had to resort to one of those backups more than I like now with Mac Pro. Put it on a FW400 drive and put it on a shelf.
    Testing - make a list of what you add or change. Then let it run for a couple days that way before adding something else.
    Zap the PRAM and reset the SMC. Run Apple Hardware Test. Maybe there is a problem - or you have a USB or FW device that interferes. Or driver.
    In some ways, I think Vista and XP lets you see and control all the startupitems better.

  • Superdrive constantly spins up during sleep

    After recently upgrading to Lion I've noticed that once my Mac Pro goes to sleep, the superdrive and the hard drive constantly spin up every 15 seconds or so.
    I've disabled 'Wake for Ethernet network access' thinking it was constantly being polled by my Apple TV but that didn't change things. Is anyone else seeing this issue?

  • USB Hub makes Airport Extreme HDDs constantly spin up and down

    Hello there,
    I have a new Airport Extreme, (newest model, but not a time capsule). I have discovered that when I plug an external USB HDD into the AE, everything is dandy. But when I use a powered USB hub, the HDDs are constantly spinning up and down. All connected computers are shut down. Nothing is accessing the AE. From my testing it seems to be the powered USB hub that is creating the issue. Has anyone else noticed this? Could it be my hub (Amazon Basics 7 port powered USB hub)? Anyone have any success with a different hub?

    It can be a whole lot of stuff interacting.
    What are the external disks you are testing with.. as that is just as important as the hub.
    I have not had issues using hub.. but I seldom try it.
    Powered hubs of low quality (ie standard cheap end, rebadged made in China junk) can have substantial issues with power leaking.. ie it sources power from its own supply or the AE or the drive..
    Let me suggest you test one at a time.
    Plug in just one disk.. (will the hub work without the power supply plugged in.. some do).. assuming it is not a self powered drive.. see if it is ok by itself.. test each drive.. with the hub powered and unpowered.. tell us what you get.

  • Which Is True for 24/7 Sleep? Hard Drive Could Fail Because It's Constantly Spinning or Because It's Suddenly Switched ON

    Hi. It's sleep vs. shutdown again. I read some computer components are better off on sleep mode, some components are better off shutted down. If each component lasts longer in sleep mode and some shutted down, what then is the best for Macs as a whole?
    If it's sleeping for 24/7 won't the hardisk for example wear out more because it's constantly spinning. Won't the power supply wear out more because there's some heat? On the other hand with shutting it down then turning it back on, the components could fail because of the sudden expansion they say from cold components when it's switched ON (or sudden jerk to moving components when it's switched ON)?
    Doesn't sleep turn off components anyway like they were shutyed down so even if you use sleep, there's still a possibilit of it expanding from a cold components to warm components (or sudden jerks with components like in the hard drive)?
    Apple's manual says put it on sleep. What do they mean exactly? Are the recent Macs designed be ON 24/7 for years? Or do they mean put it to sleep mode as must as possible in a day but still shut it down at some point?
    There should be a more thorough scientific study on component failure for Macs and computers already on sleep vs. shutdown. Thank you in advance. Gbu.

    This would appear to support Baltwo's and Dennis's usage scenario. But it doesn't address the drive firmware question I raised, above.
    It is better to spin down the hard disk drive whenever you can to       reduce stress on the spindle motor.
    Truth :
    Normally, the platters are spun up at start up and kept spinning           after that. The spinning up process is the most taxing part on the hard disk drive's spindle motor. Maintaining the spindle speed thereafter requires a lot less           effort.
    If the platters have spun down and you need to read/write something           on the platters, you will need to spin up the platters to full speed         before you can read or write. Therefore, if you want maximum performance, it's better to keep the hard disk drive spinning.
    However, spinning down the hard disk drive during periods of inactivity can not only reduce power consumption, it can also reduce the heat produced. The reduced thermal output will increase the longevity of your hard disk drive.
    So, while spinning down the hard disk drive will not reduce stress on the spindle motor, it can reduce the hard disk drive's power consumption and thermal output as well as increase its lifespan.

  • MacBook Pro running Lion constantly spins up external hard drives while sleeping

    My MacBook Pro 8,2 running Lion 10.7.2 constantly spins up its external hard drives (one Firewire 800 and two USB) while sleeping. Is there any way to prevent this? The drives will spin down for a minute or so and then spin back up, which is incredibly annoying. Have to shut the computer down to prevent this.

  • Is it normal for a hard drive to be constantly spinning?

    When I first start-up my Mac for the first time in the morning, the hard drive keeps spinning and spinning and working for about 10 or 15 minutes, and no, Time Machine isn't backing up. Is this normal? Thank you.

    In System Preferences, under energy saver, do you have 'put hard drive to sleep when possible' checked?
    If you create a new userid, without any login items, and you use that to startup, does it still sound like it's working for 10-15 minutes? If not, then look at the login items under your normal ID, to see what program there is being loaded that causes all the disk access. If not sure, start eliminating one at a time.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure.     3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it.     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter

    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Firewire Drive Randomly Spins Up

    I did a quick search and found that people were having issues with their external drives spinning down randomly, however, is anyone having the issue where the drive spins up?
    I have a 500GB LaCie D2 connected via Firewire 800 to my Mac Pro. I currently have "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible," as I did in Tiger. I have 5 drives (4 internal, 1 external), and my computer gets rather loud if all drives are running at once. Anyway, after upgrading to Leopard, this external LaCie drive randomly spins up and since I think the drive is slowly giving up the ghost, it doesn't sound pretty.
    Is there a way to prevent this spin up from occurring? I am planning on getting another external drive (not LaCie), but I was thinking of using my current external as an AirPort Disk once that works with Time Machine.

  • External firewire drive constant spin-down/up

    I often connect an external Lacie firewire drive to my MacBook Pro for regular time machine backups. When the drive is connected and I'm using my Mac, the drive is constantly spinning and in an 'awake' state.
    The drive remains in this state for as long as the display is on. As soon as the display enters sleep mode the external drive spins down, remains in sleep mode for 30 seconds, then spins-up for 20 seconds, only to enter sleep mode again. This cycle continues endlessly causing excessive noise and needless wear and tear.
    I've unchecked put hard disk to sleep when possible in the energy saver preferences although this hasn't helped.
    Any ideas?

    Try un-checking the drive sleep box.
    What model is the drive? Is it bus-powered or does it have its own AC power supply brick? What does LaCie have to say?

  • IMac turn off the HDD that is constantly spinning

    Hi All,
    I have a 27' iMac with internal SDD and HDD. I really like how it is so quiet. It worked really well out of the box though had a glitch which required a reinstall of Lion. Now the HDD is constantly spinning even if there are no apps open that require r/w access to the HDD. I've used pmset to turn it off after 1 min but I'd rather it didn't come on at all unless i send something to/from the HDD. Any ideas how to configure this correctly?

    Having the disk not mount at all can be done a number of ways depending on how much work you want to do in handling this task.  There are two places/times where this can be done.
    1. You could unmount it at login by placing a unmount app of some kind in your login items or a lunchd plist in your local ~/Library/LaunchAgent.
    2. You can unmount it as the machine is booting by creating a launchd startup item in /Library/StartuItems or /Library/LaunchAgent.
    So probably for you the easiest is to use your Login Items to launch an app or whatever to unmount the drive as you log in.
    You will need some kind of unmount app that can run non-interactively.  There are unmount apps you can find in macupdate.com but I don't know if they can be made to run non-interactively. 
    I don't know your level of experience but unmounting can easily be done from a (bash) shell script (diskutil unmount /Volumes/volname) encapsulated as an app with Platypus or just using the script commands with applescript.

    I just installed GNOME3 from testing and everything worked OOTB, but since I installed it my fans are constantly spinning. When I check the cpuspeed with cpufreq-info I get this output:

    Nothing extraordinary I guess - but then why are my fans spinning? Could it be my videocard, since I'm currently using the xf86-video-ati driver instead of Catalyst which I used before? (did a clean install before installing GNOME3)

    Yep, open source ati driver still lacks good power management, unfortunatelly. Last time i checked it even my desktop hd4850 fan was spinning too fast, even on medium profile (low profile wasn't usefull at all) - it also means that power consumption was high.
