Airport Drops and requires Mac Restart

I'm new to the board and apologize if this has been covered elsewhere, but 25 or so minutes of searching didn't get me where I hoped to be. I just bought a new airport express base station for the sole purpose of listening to my itunes catalog on the living room stereo. I have an imac and a windows tower and thus no need for wireless internet access. I hooked the airport express up in the living room and instantly its generic network name was available in Internet Connect. I configured it with a new name etc. and right away my music was on the stereo.
The problem is that after a few hours, the network goes down (completely unavailable in the airport selection dropdown box), and won't come online again until I restart the mac. Unplugging the airport express for a few minutes does nothing to solve the problem. The airport has the latest firmware update and the mac has the latest 10.4. Any ideas what I can do to keep this thing up for longer than a few hours. Thanks so much.
iMac Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hi all,
I have the exact same problem.
Background:
MacBook Pro
OS X 10.4.11
Router: Billion 7404VGP (ADSL2+ modem + wireless router + voIP)
Airport Express Firmware v6.3
Previously I had been using a Netcomm Wireless router with WEP encryption. I got my AE to join that for ~5mths & everything worked great.
I've recently had to change ISP & modem/router (hence the Billion) & set up the AE in the exact same way as the Netcomm, but now with WPA2 encryption. And the AE becomes 'undetectable' but iTunes & Airport Admin Utility after a certain amount of time (I have noted my router's renewal interval's 3600s also, so that must be the time after which the AE drops off).
I have scoured websites/forums everything for a solution, but so far with no success. I have even read somewhere that ensuring SSID broadcast is ON in the router settings solves it. If it does, it hasn't yet for me.
I have called Mac Customer Support (In Australia) a few times about this issue, each time with no satisfactory outcome.
I wondered if I made my encryption back to WEP (as opposed to WPA2), maybe the key renewal interval stops being an issue, and the AE would stop dropping off?
(I'm not very technically minded, so don't REALLY know the different btw WEP & WPA2 except that WPA2's encryption's much better).
I wondered also: instead of using my AE to join my existing network, what if I made it a WDS client? I had read somewhere that WPA2 & WDS do not work together, and a WDS can only be set up with WEP encryption.
Can AirTunes still work if the AE is a WDS client?
If I tried (really hard) to set up a WDS with WEP encryption, would my AE stop 'disappearing from iTunes?'
The whole notion of having to physically unplug & replug the AE just to get AirTunes working most times is really defeating the purpose of having a wireless network!
Has anyone out there found a solution for this apparently common problem yet?
Many thanks,
Leo

  • Airport Drops and Freezes---- Finally Fixed!

Ever since I bought my MBP in July, 2009, I have had trouble with total freezes and airport drops.
    The fixes by Apple:
    1. New hard drive, battery, keyboard, logic board
    2. Problem persisted-- new logic board
    3. Problem persisted-- heat sensor was missing the sensor part
    4. Problem persisted-- Genius said it was 3rd party software
5.Problem persisted-- local Apple certified repair shop had no idea
    6. Problem Persisted-- in the meantime I had done several erase and install. It froze up every time I installed SL
    7. Problem persisted and I took it to Apple Store last week in one last final try. After hours of testing, it froze for them. They ordered new hard drive and logic board. Then the tech noticed it freeze and dropped the internet. He checked one of the logs and saw that the airport card had lost power just before the freeze.
He replaced the airport card and it is finally fixed-- the first time since July, 2009.
So if you have freezes and airport drops, be sure to check the airport. The airport was never changed when the logic board, et.al. were replaced.

Wow! I would think replacing the airport would be the first step in this madness.

  • I have some how deleted my Airport Extreme and the Mac wont recognise it ...i have a 1st gen AE

Having purchased a Airport Express to extend my network the airport utility would not recognise it .....so tried to delete current settings and reinstall Extreme and express . Now it says that because of Maverick i cant reinstall the extreme ...very frustrating ...

What are the respective model numbers of your AirPort Extreme and Express? Examine their cases for a four digit number preceded by the letter A.

  • Macbook Pro Version 10.5.2 Airport Drops and AT&T 2Wire DSL Wireless RELIEF

Dropping net driving you crazy too? Brand new Macbook Pro 15" version 10.5.2 was dropping connections all the time using Airport wireless connecting to AT&T 2Wire Wireless DSL Modem/router.
I have been a computer/network engineer forever, and I did all sorts of things to fix this... disabled security on the AT&T 2Wire DSL, changed channels (1,6,and 11), disabled IPv6, reconfigured settings for the Airport.
The ONLY thing that provided stability is that I added a Linksys Wireless Router to authenticate to and chained that to the AT&T 2Wire broadband modem/wireless router. This has been 100% stable, which implies that the AT&T 2Wire wireless and the Macbook Airport have an incompatibility.
I have waisted too much time on this, and hope you do not have to. This wasn't an issue until I bought the new Macbook Pro just released (Feb 28,2008).
Hope this helps someone out there!
    Rick

I went to 192.168.1.254 (the 2Wire router address). I then went to Home Network and scrolled to the bottom of the page. Under Additional Settings I changed the Wireless Mode from 802.11b/g to 802.11g. The internet has NOT dropped out in 48 hours. Prior to making this change the internet would drop every 10 minutes. I did NOT change any other settings.
I also tried using 802.11b and this also worked. However, the internet download speed as tested at www.speedtest.net decreased from 9.8Mbps to 6Mbps.
My other alternative workaround has been to connect an Airport Express (AE) router to the U-verse 2Wire 3800 Residential Gateway (RG). Using the 2Wire router settings at 192.168.1.254 I put the Airport Express into the DMZ mode. This solution also works. Obviously you need to own an AE as well.

  • Sound just dies and requires a restart

I sometimes have to frequently switch between using my headphones and the MBP's internal speakers. Often enough to be very frustrating, the sound just dies and refuses to come back on when I make a switch like this. Settings tell me everything is all right but the only thing that fixes this problem is a restart.
I am getting sick of restarting my MBP ...

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

  • Ipod constantly turns itself off and requires a restart

I have a 1st generation Ipod Touch 16GB and recently it has begun turning itself off when i'm doing something such as listening to music or using an app and when i turn it back on the Apple logo appears for 2-3 minutes and then the date and time is reset to 1st January 2000 00:00am. I have had it less than a year so it's still under warranty but i don't have the receipt. Any tips on how to fix it are much appreciated.

If that's the case, I'd say call Apple for help processing a return. Can you find a credit card transaction showing the purchase? I get emails from the Apple store when I buy my iPods. I get a receipt at the store, PLUS I have them email me a copy. Good luck

  • Screen Rotation stops working and requires a restart

It has happened a fourth time now. I use something in the landscape mode for a while and it locks itself in the landscape mode. Doesn't return to the portrait mode. And before anyone suggests, I use the side switch to mute and not to lock rotation. I guess the accelerometer gets unresponsive. 4th time in a couple of months is not a huge problem, but then what's the difference between iOS and others? There are some other bugs too. If they're bugs at all. Will keep posting.

Back up and restore via iTunes. If the problem continues, restore as a new device and test. If the problem is solved, there is some kind of corruption in your backup file. If it continues, take it to an Apple store for evaluation of a possible hardware problem.

Adobe does not sell older versions of their software, so the best you might hope for if the software will not run on Vista is to get a refund.

  • My Mac restarts every day after a black screen

    Hello,
Since 2-3 weeks I have a constant and extremely irritating bug.
Every day and at any time, I suddenly have a black screen, the keyboard light and the Mac restarts after few seconds. Sometimes it crashes twice a day.
To try to solve the problem, I reinstalled Mac OS Lion since partition "Recovery HD".
I checked the permissions, the system is updated, the software used as well. I also send the error report to Apple each time you restart, but there is still no visible return.
    I'm getting more than upset.

  • Apple Tv drops IP given from Airport Express, and wont get an new one untill AE gets restarted.

So my Apple TV (3rd gen) is connected via ethernet to my Airport Express, but the Airport Express needs resetting all the time for my Apple Tv to get an IP.
How do I get them to be friends forever without resetting the AE? When the AppleTV gets restarted, it still wont get an IP. I've disabled the 'sleep' option on the ATV with no luck.
    Any idea's?

odd I had that issue with wifi once only once
that the airport exteme and atv got off on the wrong foot one day and the
appleid and router had to be restarted before they played nice once more
I would use the airport utils and make sure the AE had the latests firmware

  • Many random abrupt restarts with ML and my Mac Pro

Any help would be appreciated with this...
Ive recently clean installed Mountain Lion with only a handful of 3rd party apps on my 2009(?) Mac Pro and seem to be getting  about 3-6 random Kernal Panics and/or abrupt restarts a day.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason for them as they all happen when doing differant tasks.  Last time it happened I was only browsing in Safari with itunes playing in the background.  iTunes started to skip like a scratched record 4 or 5 times then suddenly the computer shut down and restarted itself.  Below is the report that I sent to Apple.  Any idea whats causing the problem or suggestions on a fix?  If more info is required Id be happy to post.  Thanks!

  • Macbook airport connection drops and locks my computer

So... I think my problem tops them all. Ive done alot of searching and ive found no topic relative to mine.
    - My intel macbook has an airport extreme that can succesfully connect to my schools network or my girlfriends network or my network at home. However...
Many times a day... as soon as i make my connection active by going on a web browser.
My Airport drops connection and locks my computer... only the mouse is avaliable, but
anything else i try to click.. i end up with the spinning beach ball. Only solution i can find
thus far is to force shutdown my computer and restart... Now i cant do a PRAM reset or
start up in safe mode. I dont know how to solve this...
Can anyone help me with this? It is incredibly annoying as i have to force shutdown my computer over 6 times a day which is... bad ... for my computer. More bad clusters.
    Thanks much ... G

My problem is a variation on yours.
I don't lose the airport connection at all. I can connect to my Airport Extreme base station and surf the Internet without a any hassle. I can see the other computers connected to said AEBS. Network drives are mountable.
HOWEVER, as soon as I start to transfer a file or folder from or to a mounted network drive, the transfer hangs. The only solution is to power-off Airport to get the Mac to acknowledge losing connection to the network drive. Otherwise I would continue to stare enlessly at a frozen progress bar.
Hopefully 10.5.2 will address the issue.
