Airport Dying....

I have 10.6.2 - all the updates. So I'll be online, and my signal will just drop. I have an airport extreme router but I know that's not the problem because this problem has happened on 3 different networks, including a linksys and dlink. So my connection drops... sometimes it comes back, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes airport still shows as connected but it just doesn't work... in any case if I turn airport off, it won't let me turn it back on - when I hit turn airport on nothing happens.
I know there's a really long thread here on dropping wi-fi signals, but I dont even know where to start with that one. It's my understanding there are a ton of airport bugs in that latest update they made.
Is there anything I can do now or should I just put up with it until another update comes out?

HI,
Try a different Airport Channel.
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X.
Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a new channel from the Channel pop-up menu.

  • My A1084 airport express worked flawlessly with leopard, not with lion

I have a late 2006 iMac with an intel processor.
it was using leopard and I got an airport express a1084 (older model) and it was working flawlessly. I use it solely to play music from my iMac or iPod on my stereo wirelessly using a linksys e2500 wireless N dual band
    Compatible with 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g standards
I recently was strong armed by apple to upgrade to lion since we use the mac mail program and it was being ditched with the integration of iCloud.
so I ponied up and bought snow leopard, so I could install it and then down load lion from the app store.
    I HATE lion.
almost all of the programs I bought previously no longer work, including my 1 month old network wired printer.
If I don't plug the printer in to the mac, I can't scan to the iMac.
but anyway, my airport express is the issue I am looking for help with.
    This airport goes offline constantly
sometimes it flashes a yellow light, sometimes it has a solid yellow light.
sometimes it works for a week, sometimes for 1 hour.
I have re-set it up many times always with teh same result...until I plug it into a network cable, the iMac can't find it.
si I plug it in and get it working and then move it to the stereo and it will sometimes work for a little while, then no more.
have to set it up again.
is this yet another compatibility issue with LION or is the airport dying?
thank you for any light you can shed on this subject.

I have the exact same problem.

  • Apple Care replaced my dead, out-out-of-warranty Airport Express

Today, I became one of the hundreds (thousands??) of Airport Express users whose AE died just a few months out of warranty. I faithfully purchase Apple Care (3-year extended warranty) from Apple for every Mac I buy.
A few years ago, my graphite Airport died, and the Apple Care rep gladly replaced it due to my active Apple Care contract at that time. Today, I thought I would receive the same courtesy, thanks again to my TWO active Apple Care contracts that were in place well before I purchased the AE.
My initial Apple Care rep denied my request for a replacement AE, because, he argued, the AE was not purchased at the same time with a Mac. I explained to him the graphite Airport story above, and he dug his heels in deeper. I insisted that he send me up the food chain to a superviser, and after 4-5 min on the phone, the supervisor came on, apologized for his tech's mis-interpretation of policy, and authorized the replacement on the spot. He told me that his techs would have this clearly explained to them for future Apple Care contract holders who call up with a dead AE.
Extra info...I live near an Apple Store, and asked if I may go there and pick up the replacement. He said the decision would be up to the store management--if they had stock, etc. I said I wanted to take my chances and go up there, so he instantly made me an appointment with the genius bar within the hour. This Apple Care supervisor was a real pro. He made it clear that Apple Care covers an AE even if the AE is not purchased with a Mac. He also told me he would make a special request within my case report to the store for a stock unit. Bam! I walked in and got hooked up! Apple does take care of its customer (who might need to be a bit more persistant than need be at times) after all.
Good luck should you find yourself in the same boat I was in...By the way, I am posting this via my replacement AE on the same day, and I would swear it produces faster internet speed than the fried one!

    Hi, Steve
that's one of the good points of the forum here: having a lot of trouble the past few weeks with my iMac, and now also with a brandnew minimac, I get back full with hope by reading your post here.
no, i'm not sarcastic. I think you tell us that we can get treated correctly if we insist to be treated correctly. and that is a a helpful advice.
    Thanks, Thomas

  • Graphite: slow, slower...Is it dying?

I'm having most of the time a very slow internet connection. I'm pretty sure the problem lies within the Wireless network, since when I hook up the computer directly to the DSL-modem, the speed is great. Sometimes, the speed can get very good over AirPort, bit it never lasts very long. Restarting the ABS seems to help for a while, but the speed slows dramatically as I move a little away from the ABS. I'm the latest software and firmware, is my AirPort dying? Would a new AirPort Express have a better range than my ABS bought back in 2000?

11Mbps is the max raw link speed (at the physical access layer.) However, there are various overheads associated with actually framing the "user" data (e.g. file data for ftp, http data for web stuff, etc.) for transmission and also the contention resolution mechanism for the wireless broadcast medium to handle multiple users trying to access the airwaves at the same time. This means that the actual usable link capacity is always lower than the raw link speed.
The same is true for wired ethernet at 100Mbps, you'll easily get 10Mbps as a single user - but you'll max out at some point much less than 100Mbps and of course if there are multiple users on the same segment the throughput can drop dramatically because of contention.
So if you do want wireless at actual 10Mbps user data throughput you'll certainly need to go to 802.11g or above.
Sorry to disappoint, but b just won't cut it if that is what you are after.

Running on Lion, never had a problem before until the old airport died and I replaced it.

try connecting the device in _*recovery mode*_, then restore from your backup.
also, make sure [_*Apple Mobile Device Service*_|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567] is installed and started.

  • Airport dead...

After waking up and using my computer for 30 min. my airport died on me. Nothing changed, nothing was different, except I had no wireless connection.
The display still read full bars, it still showed I was connected but I got nothin.
So like any normal person I ran airport setup utility, disk utility (and repaired), clicked on the reset button (for one sec, not five) and yet still nothing. I even went through the airport help (yikes) and as usual, that did nothing for me.
So now I'm here looking for some aid.

I wouldn't recommend pushing the reset button on a Base Station as one of the first means of solving a connectivity problem. Doing so (for one second as you indicated) resets its admin password and wireless security key - unless you do nothing, then wait five minutes until the Base Station drops out of soft reset mode automatically and reverts to its previous settings. What you should do instead - pull power to the cable/DSL modem and the Base Station for a few minutes, then plug the modem back into power, then plug the Base Station back into power.
If that failed to work, the next step would be to connect your Mac directly to the modem to see whether you ISP's service is still working (as Vince asked about).

  • HT1218 Airport extreme 802.11n won't connect to internet

After returning from vacation, having shut down all power to electronic devices, I returned to have an issue with airport extreme. It appears to boot properly and diagnostics have it running through first 4 items until it hits internet. It remains red and won't connect. I am using a cable modem. I have reset the cable modem numerous times with and without airport connected. No change. I reset airport to default setting and created a new wifi network. Again, no change.  I also attempted a firmware update. "Error occurred while attempting firmware update" and it never could update. I have contacted cable provider and connection is good. Modem works properly using ethernet connection. I have been able to connect wirelessly to unprotected wifi connections, just not my own network, old or new. I am at a loss. Did my airport die?
    thanks,

a macrumors user walked me through an ethernet connected firmware update and I am back up running again. You have to connect the AE to the mac via ethernet then open airport utility, create or use an old network and update firmware. Shut down and reconnect AE to cable modem and restart. Firmware update solved my connectivity issue.

  • MacBook Pro won't connect to wireless network unless tilted

Hi! My MacBook Pro occasionally has trouble connecting to the wireless network in my house, but that can usually be solved by turning Airport off and then back on. Today (very suddenly), Airport disconnected from my network and could not find it again. I tried restarting my MacBook Pro and router multiple times. Finally it was able to connect, but here's the thing: it only works if my MacBook is tilted at an angle. If I try to open a webpage while the MacBook is sitting normally on a flat surface, the page won't load. If I lift one side of the MacBook so that it's tilted at a 45 degree angle, the page will load. Once it's level again the internet will stop working and the Airport signal bars will turn gray.
I've never come across a problem like this before. Everything was running fine this morning. It is so strange and I have no idea what to do! Help, please? Is my Airport dying? Is something loose inside? My MacBook Pro is about 4 years old.

Delete your network from system preferences, network, advanced.
re enter your network you wish to join
If that fails then do a PRAM reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    and a SMC reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Maybe something to do with the motion sensor
if so try resetting the SMC

  • Some Virus Questions

I have been trying to stay as safe as possible
in my web life recently. I was getting a bit
overconfident because of the Macs reputation.
I have had only Macs going back to OS7.
    My questions are
    #1.
When I finally get a Intel Mac and heaven
only knows, if for some reason wanted to run
windows on this Mac, does it now become as
vulnerable as a normal PC to attacks?
Would I then have to do the whole spyware/
viruse regiment on the computer as a whole or
would the Mac side still be insulated against
    the PCs bugs?
    #2
I have a fairly large collection of cassette
tapes. I have been kind of lazy in that instead
of digging out a tape for a song I want to put
on my ipod and having to convert it to a digital
format which is kind of a pain.I would just
download it from a file sharing program. I heard
a podcast where they said that viruses could be
hidden in the mp3 files. Is this a concern for
Mac users or a real threat?
    #3.
I learned about Root kits recently and was
wondering if there is a utility for finding
them on your machine? Is this something that
is not possible on OSX because of the Administrator
password necessary to install a program?
    #4.
I recently had my Airport die so I am using
only the software firewall which according
to the GRC website was very secure.Heres what
their sites said when it tried to access my machine.
Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL
STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port
connection attempts to be answered with a success or
refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect
to a nonexistent computer results in no response of
either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN
NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents
advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities.
A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened
to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.
Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer
have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows
    networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities
from Windows networking, this computer appears to be
VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal
NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.
Should I take this with a grain of salt or is
it right on? I received similar results in all
areas. I do get numerous entries in the logs
about stealth attempts to connect to my computer.
It is amazing how often it happens (many times everyday)
This is why I having been stepping up the vigilance.
Thanks for all your thoughts. I admit I am
a little paranoid but with phishing and zombies,
I do think the internet justifies it sometimes.

    Hi Wayne,
    Regarding your question,
    This is what I did:
Using Secure Empty Trash from the Finder menu:
After running the full scan as I described in the previous
post now set preferences in ClamXav to quarantaine the
corrupt files in a folder on my desktop named "Birdcage"
I set the preferences to look for '.rar' extensions.
(The elaborate scans showed 2 infected files with the
'.rar' extension, all scans described in this post run in
    these settings)
The HD scan resulted in 1 infected file.
(this is a little strange because there where 2 infected
files reported after the force trash experiment described
    in the previous post)
    Log output:

    1. I backed up my important files after running the
ClamXav scans and removing the infected files, and
    installed a new osx.
    2. I did not import keychains from another computer
after booting the new osx I (read somewhere this a
solution for the diskpermissions). I checked wether
my disk permissions where restored by choosing
Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities folder and
refer to Disk Utility Help. "verify permissions".
    3. After downloading ClamXav, it promted me to donate,
I did this after I removed the infected files.
    4. As Mac OS X is essentially a UNIX-like operating
system, the ClamAV project has recently pledged improved
support for it, which includes the adding of any potential Mac OS X
malware to the definitions list. Of course, this implies that the community reports such programs to the ClamAV authors and that they
in return judge the threat of significance so that they act upon it.
Unfortunately they do not have a database of Mac infections
    or other malware.
5.After the proceedings described above ClamXav did
    not report infected files.
I am not aware of infected files that are residing on my
harddrive after running ClamXav, backing up and installing a new osx.
Many thanks to ClamXav, it is the only virus scanner I ran
    that located these infected files.
I entered my creditcard data for a donation.
Hope this kind of answers your question Wayne, I hope the files are gone.
If anyone has advice on what i did or sees that I made a mistake, or could
do better please inform me a.s.a.p. I never had a pc.
    I'll keep you posted.

  • Timecapsule has self assigned IP in Yosemite. What can I do?

My old airport died when I upgraded to mavericks. I got tired of using the ethernet cable and not being able to wirelessly use the printer so I bought a 2 TB time capsule with airport extreme. I've been trying to set it up but no matter what I do I keep getting a self assigned IP. I know the cable modem works because everything I go back to the ethernet cable I'm on the internet. But every time I try to go back to the WiFi network I get a self assigned IP. No matter what I do. I've redone everything. I've already tried removing the preferences plist files to rebuild them and I've created a new location with manual DNS and set the MTU manually to 1453. Nothing works. I really don't want to go into the terminal and refresh the discoveryd services.
What can I do? Did I just get a dud Timecapsule or is this a problem with a lot of people running Yosemite? So far there are no updates that clear this up and I have a $200 white brick in my living room.

THe TC has issues with some cable modem.. SB6121 and 6141 are particularly problematic.
We need to know what model cable modem you have and how you have TC setup.
Did you power down the modem for at least 20min maybe more if it won't work to lose the register MAC address of the device you previously plugged in.. this is required with every cable ISP.

  • Powerbook forgets printer suddenly

Both at my home and office I have noticed intermittent printing issues with my powerbook. I have the airport extreme with my printers hooked to the airport in both locations. Without warning, when I go to print, the computer will state "no printer found". I go through all the usual motions and it will suddenly recognize the printer....sometimes. It seems isolated to the computer itself since it has happened at both locations with different airports/internet providers/printers. Any suggestions?

Is your powerbook getting old? Perhaps the airport extreme card is getting loose, or thee antenna is having intermittent loose connections. My 17" powerbook's airport died 3 days after the AppleCare expired. I replaced the airport card, and it worked for 2 days. Haven't shut it down long enough to take it apart and see where the loose connection is. It ain't easy!
I think my powerbook's problem was that it was jealous of being replaced on the truck by a MacBookPro!
I don't really know any other reason why a wireless connection to a networked printer would fritz out on you. You don't have similar problems with your MacBook?

  • Weird 1st Gen Macbook Pro wireless problem

    Heya,
Recently i went on holidays for a week and left my macbook pro at home switched off.
Before I left it was working completely fine and would happily connected to my DLINK wireless router, as it had been for the previous few years.
Upon my return, i started my laptop only to find it was having trouble keeping a connection to the router. After about an hour it stopped connecting all together.
    Relevant info
    1) Router has been power cycled, as has the macbook pro.
    2) Router has been reset to factory default.
    3) Another macbook and ipod touch can see the router and connect fine using it
    4) I tried new user profile on the Macbook pro, as well as trashing the network prefs.
    5) I just finished doing a clean install on the macbook pro, and still no dice.
    7) I have reset NVRAM
    8) Both MB and MBP are running 10.5.7
    9) NO ONE TOUCHED THIS WHILE I WAS AWAY. The house was locked.
    10) Although it cant see the router, it can however create a network and also connect and keep a connection to another macbooks network, including shared internet.
The last one is the real strange part of this. At first i thought perhaps it was just the Airport dying, but the fact it can create a network aswell as connect to other networks create on other macbooks is a bit weird.
My neighbors WIFI usually comes up in the list of available networks, but this macbook pro is just not seeing ANY wireless networks that is originating from routers.
I just dont know what to do
I dont have the money to repair it, not to mention buy a replacement.. and i use wireless every day.
    any clues?
I have searched through the discussions, but anything similar i have found either have been unresolved or turn out to be something to do with the router.
but the router appears to be operating normally, i am current use it to write this post.

I am having the exact same problem with my MacBook and Airport Extreme. It seemed that once I downloaded the latest firmware 7.4.2, I am getting connectivity issues to the Airport. I have a strong signal, but the base station disappears often, even when the laptop is sitting right next to. Signal strength is good throughout the house, but connectivity to internet is spotty at best. My iPhone can connect to the Airport with no issues and is able to connect to the internet.
I did a factory hard reset and went back to the 7.4.1 firmware, but still am having same issues. Sometimes I have great connectivity, but more often then not, I am getting nothing. My MacBook appears to be able to connect to other wireless networks, i.e. the one in the Apple Store. But I haven't been able to confirm if any other computers can connect continually to the Airport. I have perfect internet connection through the ethernet ports on the Airport. Interference might be contributing, but shouldn't have any issue with the laptop sitting right next to the base.
Is there anyway to run diagnostics on the wireless card or the base? I did the PRAM reset, but nothing changed. I am glad I am not the only one who is now experiencing this. Very frustrating because a week ago, I was working great and have been for over a year and half.
Looking for any other bright ideas on how to troubleshoot.

  • Closing the display w/o sleeping.

hey, i was just wondering if anyone here knew of a way to be able to close the mbp screen without the computer shutting itself off in sleep mode. I'm backing up my hard drive and i'd rather not have to leave the screen open.

You can run the MBP with the lid closed if you have it hooked up to another monitor. Here is how. Sleep the MBP. With the lid closed, Connect external monitor, and turn Monitor on. Plug in power supply, then USB Keyboard, and it should wake up on the external monitor only. If it doesn't wake up, hitting the space bar should wake it. I wouldn't run it long this way. But if you open the lid after waking it on external monitor, Lid monitor stays dark. If you want to use 2 monitors, either wake it with the lid open, or open it and select Detect Displays from the Displays Preference panel. Mine is a little screen in the menu bar. I always keep my PowerBook G4-17 attached this way when it is in the office. 4 years and going strong. I suppose running it half the time with the lid closed might hurt it, maybe that's why the airport died 3 days after AppleCare ended! I don't think it gets as hot as this MBP does

  • How I Fixed My Dying Santa Rosa Airport Connection

I have the new 15" LED MacBook Pro. I've had it since June 11 and it worked great. Not one problem. No kernel panics. Wireless was fantastic with the Airport Extreme.
Then I ran the 10.4.10 update and everything started to die just as others here have mentioned. Running on battery or AC didn't make a difference.
    1. iDisk was freaking out with Mirror Agent errors.
    2. WiFi connectivity would be there, then not.
    3. iTunes streaming from a network box would work and then not.
    4. Downloads were slow and funky.
After reading the messages here and futzing around with some other stuff I found on the web, here's how I was able to return my wireless connection to full functionality and robustness.
    1. I turned off iDisk. No syncing. No iDisk as disk.
    2. I did the PRAM reset.
    3. I logged into my Airport Extreme and changed the channel from "Automatic" to "11" and when I did I was asked for a keychain password and I provided it.
Since making those changes I can now...
    1. Listen to iTunes again. I've been streaming from the network for 4 hours without interruption.
    2. This morning I listened to WFAN streaming radio for six hours without even a stutter.
    3. I downloaded the new 175MB iPhone tutorial and watched it from the network drive.
I have no idea if any of this will solve any of the trouble you're having, but I thought I'd share what I learned and wish you the best. It's incredibly frustration to sort of connect and then not...

If you lose after sleep, that often means that the default network it is trying to connect to is not setup in the network preferences.
    If you go to:
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Network -> change Network Status to Airport, and By default Join Preferred networks, and delete all the networks, and only add the network with the correct username and password for your network, usually that will fix the network so that it only goes to that network after it wakes from sleep. Sometimes if the network settings become corrupted, it is best to clear the preferred networks, and start fresh.

  • Airport has died!!

Hi all, I've had my imac intel for a couple of months (thank you Steve!) and I've been using my wireless network with no problems . . . until now! I know my router is working, I can still conect my psp to the internet, but when ever I try to conect my mac I get a message in safari telling me I'm not conected to the internet and the option to open internet utilities. If you've seen this program you'll understand what I mean next! The first three lights are always green, but the last three lights keep on jumping from green to red and sometimes yellow??! I've restarted the router and the cable modem and the mac and ever the toaster! but it doesn't help. I'm currently using a network cable to snake from the router to my room (this doesn't bother me but it's driving my Mum mad!!) Every now and then all the lights are green and I try to give safari a go, very infrequently it'll work but I'll get two or three pages in to digg.com and it'll die again!
I've also noticed a 'rouge' signal in my airport menu (incidetly it's call 'BushHill' which is also the name of the town I live in?) But it's password protected and it isn't there all the time??!?!?
My router is pretty old, about three years, but if I can still conect my psp to it the problem shouldn't be there? Or because it's old is there a functionallity problem with the 801.11 (or whoever it is!)
My Mother really would like someone to help me get rid of the 'unsightly' blue cable!!!!

I don't think it is your airport. I think someone in your area has got into the same "wavelength" as you. It happened to me and also my nextdoor neighbor. Someone has signed into the same band as you are and when they shut down, they close out the whole access. I talked to apple support for an entire weekend and what they suggested was go door to door asking if anyone has added new electronic equipment that could be interrupting the signal. I was reluctant to try this, but before I could even attempt explaining it to the neighbors, my system came back up. I have no suggestions as to how to handle it. Just thought I would let you know what has probably happened. Apple support did suggest that when I was able to get on using airport, I should change the channel that I was accessing ie: if I was using channel 11, I should try something a bit farther away, such as channel 3.

Whenever I insert a transition, it automatically shows up as 0.1 seconds. When I go into the inspector to change the transition length, it changes in the inspector, but when I play the movie, it's still 0.1 seconds. Does anyone have any suggestions?
