Airport either unable to connect or drops connection

We have had our IMac a little over one year and are now starting to have problems. On startup Airport shows connection to my wireless router but after starting to download a web site or e-mail the connection drops off even though it shows that it is connected on the Network page. Checking the popup in the upper right hand corner shows Airport searching for a connection and then dropping off continually. At other times the Network page shows 'no network selected' and my wireless system is not listed in the drop down menu; I can select it on the page under Advanced and bring it to the menu but when it is selected it doesn't stay in the window. The Apply button does not light up. I also get a popup saying that "None of your preferred networks are available" and "connection timeout". I have two pc's in the same room, a laptop and a desktop that connect to the system with no problem. Has Apple ever acknowledged that they have a problem?

Hi Carolyn: Thank you for your response. I attempted to change channels as you suggested but when I clicked on Airport Utility it did a scan and came up with:
"Airport Utility unable to find any Airport wireless device" so I was unable to proceed to the next step. I flashed my router, ie, reloaded the router program and was able to get the iMac to connect for a short time; long enough to open my home page and download four e-mails and then it reverted to problem A wherein the Network page shows a connection complete with site ID but there is no internet connection. While it was connected I tried again with Airport Utility and had the same result. I have tried deleting the System Config files and restarting based on info found elsewhere in the thread; it worked for a while the first time I did it but not after that. My iMac is currently an expensive piece of electronic junk. If I can get it to stay connected long enough I will try downloading the update 10.6.3x and see if that helps any. If you have any further suggestions please advise.

  • Lenovo G505 Wifi Problems - Limited Connection, No Connection, and Dropped Connections

Some forum members have reported a variety of Wifi issues with their G505 laptops. Their reports range from showing "Connection is limited", to Wifi connections dropping repeatedly, to being unable to make a Wifi connection at all. I combined multiple threads in order to assist forum members with troubleshooting solutions.
If your G505 was upgraded to Windows 8.0 or 8.1 and then lost connectivity, or you recently purchased a G505 running Windows 8.0 or 8.1 and are unable to connect, try following the instructions posted by Vikramsbox to restore the connection through the Lenovo Communications Utility.
For non-Windows 8.0 or 8.1 users, start troubleshooting with the basics:
The most recent WLAN, BIOS, and Power Management drivers from Lenovo can be downloaded here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/lenovo-g505-no...
It is also good practice to verify your Wifi is activated by following the instructions from Neokenchi.
Check Power Management settings to ensure your laptop isn't turning off the Wifi as noted by Dannyk1.
Check to see that Airplane Mode is set to OFF by following the instructions provided by Shiv_K.
After trying those steps, if you still experience a Wifi issue with your G505, other troubleshooting steps have been noted in this thread. This includes a whitelist of accepted replacement WLAN cards posted by Topmahof and a 3rd party driver which resolved wifi issues for Miila and Jessemck125. Please note that while Lenovo does not support 3rd part drivers, it may be an option to consider if your laptop is out of warranty and none of the suggestions in the thread resolve the issue.

First is to update your Atheros/Broadcom driver for your G505 here:http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/wlan117w8.exe
From what I understand, the situation is that you get limited connectivity while your other devices that are connected to the router gets uninterrupted internet access.
After updating your drivers, you can try to flush your DNS cache by copy and pasting this code to your notepad and saving it as FlushDNS.bat
    @Echo on
    pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
    attrib -h -s -r hosts
    echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
    attrib +r +h +s hosts
    popd
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns
    netsh winsock reset all
    netsh int ip reset all
    shutdown -r -t 1
    del %0
Note that this will restart your computer so make sure to save your session first.
Here's the link that explains the benefit of flushing DNS: http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/144365-network-posting-tips.html
Hope this resolves your random "limited connectivity" problem.

  • Airport Express - unable to print via USB connected HP1505 laserjet

Hi all - I have an HP Laserjet 1505 connected to my airport express USB port. I can 'see' the printer and set it up without issue. However, whenever I try printing to it, nothing happens. The printer appears 'on hold' but nothing ever prints. I have tried restarting everything, uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and alternative print drivers (GIMP) with no luck. Love to hear from someone who has the same setup working. Thanks in advance.

could be you find pointers in the _*Printer Troubleshooting Guide*_.
    good luck !

  • Airport Extreme 4th Generation Freezes/Crashes - dropped connection

    Hi
I have an Airport Extreme (4th Gen) Base Station which has started to freeze/crash. It will work fine for a while and then it will dissapear as an available network to connect to, this is via both Wireless and a LAN connection (MacBook Pro and iPhones and iPad connect wireless and Mac Mini is connected via LAN) The Green light is still on but airport utility reports that there is no available basestation unless I pull the plug on the base station and let it reset.
I had been running firmware 7.6 and had tried downgrading to 7.5.2 but that made no difference and I am still getting the problem.
I have also reset the base station to default settings and set up again which has also not helped.
Has anyone else experienced this problem or have any ideas on how I can resolve this as loosing my network every 30 mins - 1 hour is a little annoying
    Thanks
    Justin

I am having the same probably.  Just starting to do this 2 days ago.  Not sure if that is related to the new airport utility or the new firmware.
I am curious if you are having any luck fixing it?  If so, please share some hints.
    Thanks

  • My airport will sporadically drop connection and cause my network to fall

My airport extreme will suddenly without warning drop connection and have the blinking yellow/orangeish light. Sometimes it only lasts for a few seconds other times it will last for a few minutes. I have looked at my cable modem and it is still working fine with all indicator lights up and blinking in sequence as they should be. Just wondering what is causing this? It has caused for a lot of problems as I have uninstalled and totally reset up my entire network, which has caused me to not be able to install my printer to be used over the network wirelessly. I am at my wits end and about 2 more hours away from just doing a time machine reset to a month ago when things were working optimally. Only thing is everythign that I have downloaded to my itunes will be lost.

No, my airport is over a year old, I have been using this one since May or April of last year. First time I have had any problems out of it. And I refuse to pay money to have an apple service tech tell me there is nothing that can be done.

  • Fix for Airserver or Reflector ( drops connection when call comes in )

    Hey Guys
Today i am using AirServer and it works great to be able to show your IPad on you PC or MAC. The problem is that i am sharing a app that  does a voice and video call and when the call connects it drops connection of the sharing on the MAC / PC. Once the Phone / Video connection is ended Airserver comes back up and works like advertised. (I just tried Reflector and they both work the same). Don't know if this a securty thing in IOS or not might be ? Any work arounds ? I already sent emails to both Airserver and Reflector. Open to other products if needed.
Does anyone know a solution which might work to be able to share the IPad / IPhone on PC / Mac and not drop the connection. If solution only works on a Mac that is fine as well.
    Device
    IPad 2 running IOS 7.0.4
    Displaying to the following:
AirServer version 1.9.4.0 Windows on Win 7 32 bit.
AirServier version 4.8.1 on Mavericks on a Mac Book Air.
    Thx
    Dave

Still have the problem does anyone know a fix for this by chance ?>
Anyone know of a application or way to use a lightning to hdmi into a PC or Mac that would allow to show just half of the of the real estate on your monitor ( Similer to Airserver ?). I assume i need some capture card basically i want to be able to show half the screen with my IPAD and show a browser on the other half of the screen.
BTW I am using a IPad Air now running IOS 7.04 same thing.

  • Airport Express drops connections

I recently bought an airport express to use for streaming music. I set it up to join my existing wireless network using DHCP to get an IP address. It works fine for a few minutes to a few hours. Then it drops the connection to the existing wireless network. Streaming doesn't work and I can't ping it. The status light remains green and I am unable to connect to it using airport utility. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it reboots and then works ok for a while. If I connect to the Airport Express using the ethernet port it reboots and then works fine for a while. The behavior has been consistent for 3 days.
My existing wireless network consists of two access points. One is part of the router that Verizon provided with my fios connection and is an Actiontec and is running in mixed b and g modes uing WPA. The other access point is a Linksys WAP54G with a wired ethernet connection to the router. Both access points use the same SSID. (I have two access points to provide adequate signal strenght throughout the entire house.)
    Any suggestions?
    Tom

Hi, I recently swapped an old N 450 Router to Apple Extreme (5Gen). Initially the signal was very strong and even in first floor Smart TV Netflix loading was almost instantaneous. I have a 50mbps Xfinity Blast. All nice and felt that it was such a good move and justified the cost of the router too. After 2 days, started noticing connection drop outs, IP address conflicts, unable to connect, wifi was connected but no internet. Power recycled it and things seemed okay. again after 2 days, the internet was very slow, dog slow infact to load up regular websites and pages. This time through it was something with the Xfinity modem (Motorola SB6121) which never in 2 years had given me any issues, but recycled it, seems to be marginally better, but the speed ( not the wifi signal) remained very slow. I am a IT person, not specifically Networking, but quite good with systems, configurations etc. Finally eating up my pride called the Apple Support. The guy who responded seemed knowledgeable. He asked me to walk through the set up process, which I said, I have already done it.He asked me how did I set the router up. I had used an iPad with the Apple Utility and since there about 15 devices connected through out the house, I had used the same SSIDs one for 5Ghz and another for 2.4 Ghz. Apparently using the same SSID leads to deterioration in both connectivity and signal strength. I have never heard of this as I have swapped out routers in past 12 years using same SSIDs without any issues. The Support guy told me that this is only with Apple Routers and not with other brands. I have never heard any such thing and trying to google did not get me much information on this. I reached this forum as result. I need answers desperately so that I can decide to return or keep the router. Thanks

  • AirPort Dropping Connection

Hello. I've been experiencing some issues with my AirPort 802.11n equipment dropping connections.
The problems usually occur when I'm participatig in bandwidth intensive activities, such as gaming, or streaming movies. What'll happen is that the connection will fail, and I will be unable to see the base station in AirPort Utility.app. Quite simply, it's like there is no base station, even though OS X says I'm connected and have full strength. I am unable to connect until I manually restart the AirPort.
It should be noted that the same issue occurs on the iBook G4 (wifi), MacBook (wifi), and Dell Dimension (ethernet) computers that also utilize the router. Every Mac is running 10.4.10 with the latest updates, etc...
I have already changed the channel (1, 6, 11) with no success and changed the wireless security (WPA2 Personal -> WPA/WPA2 Personal), with no success. I would've taken it back to the Apple store, but I can't find my receipt and believe that it's been > 30 days.
I've also noticed that Network Utility.app has shown a lot of receive/send packet errors, even when simply web browsing.
    So can anyone help?

    Greetings,
I have had the AEBSn since they were first released and I have never had an issue, the same as the one before it, - I have a powered USB hub with two printers and two external harddrives on it and it has never missed a tic.
However, I do have a friend who had a messy network setup using a Linksys AP/Router, a couple of little Netgear switches and other convoluted materials, parts and pieces. His connections were dropping a lot, he told me, and I was asked to look into it.
I disassembled all of it and started fresh. I reset the AEBSn back to factory, removed the Linksys and one of the switches. This was all he needed - no "N" class stuff involved.
When you reset the station, unplug everything from it, use an ethernet cable, reset, power off for a minute. Power it up connected only to the Cable/DSL modem - let it stand for a minute or two picking up all of the necessary input from the ISP, unless you have to put it in manually.
Reset your computers, Mac or PeeCee by removing all previous connection information, leave everything on auto, and then one at a time reconnect to the AEBSn and let them find things on their own. The Windows machines may need a little help, depending on which OS they are running. After a few minutes you should be connected.
Try that and see if it helps. It worked for my friends setup and he has never dropped a connection or lost his harddrive sharing. Thats been over a week of study use. He's a Bit Torrent user, probably stealing music or software - who knows, but he's a happy camper.
    Good Luck,
    M.

  • Magic Mouse drops connection with two blinks; unable to reconnect

My magic mouse drops connection frequently. It may drop connection at any time with no reason and goes off into two blinks. Then it's unable to be reconnected. I've tried many things, including turning the mouse off and on, turning Bluetooth off and on, unpairing the mouse and try to repair (unable to discover at this moment), but nothing works. After waiting for a long time it may get connected suddenly.
I believe it is the computer's issue rather than the mouse. I have two Macs (MacBook Pro and iMac) and two Magic Mice, but the issue only happen to my MacBook Pro with either of the two mice.
Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thank you!

I really cannot see why those problems relate to only one of your machines though you don't say if you have reset the SMC on the MacBook Pro.  See ...
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
Nor do you say if you have given the batteries a thorough check.  While this should not affect only one machine, Try removing them, clean the inside of the compartment and the battery terminals themselves.  If it is reasonably possible, replace the old batteries with new ones.

  • New time capsule+new airport express=daily dropped connections

I have a new 2 TB Time Capsule and a new Airport Express that I puchased to update my old set-up of an Airport Express and Airport Extreme.
I have the TC set-up as the primary base station in the back of the house and the airport express set-up to extend the network in the front of the house. I was getting constant disconnects up front for the first several days so I finally exchanged the new AX for another one thinking maybe the first one was faulty. I reset the TC back to factory defaults for good measure and re-set up my network the same way with the new AX.
Two days with no disconnects, thought it was fixed, and then it started again...no joy. Not as often as with the first AX, but still it happens 2-3 times a day and always up in the front of the house while we're on our MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. When this happens both the AX and the TC have green lights and full bars of connectivity show in the menu bar, but yet no internet access. The only way to reconnect is to restart the AX. I have noticed too, that when this happens, the Airport Utility does not show the TC at all...even though it's light is fully green and it should be there, it just shows the AX until I restart and then both show up again.
I've tried changing the channel from automatic to a specific channel but this really doesn't change things much. Now I'm starting to wonder if something is awry with the TC. I've also noticed that it sometimes fails to back up because it can't find a connection to my iMac which is right next to it in the back of the house.
So far this upgrade has been more of a downgrade. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Just an update and still seeking some advice for this situation...anybody?
I tried re-setting both TC and AX to factory settings and re-configuring. Still get at least 3-4 dropped connections up front on a daily basis; however, TC has been connecting successfully and backing up my iMac, so at least that seems to be ok.
Still the same situation with the TC not showing up in Airport Utility every time the network connection drops happen...just the AX is seen until I finally have to restart the AX and then both can be viewed in Airport Utility and the internet connection is restored. Sometimes I can restore connection by simply toggling my airport access on and off in the menu bar of my MacBook Pro, but more often then not, I have to restart the AX itself to get back online.
Is it possible that this could be an issue with the TC? Somehow it might be dropping the connection to the AX? I can still exchange it for another if this may be the case. I'm already on my second AX thinking that the Express was the problem initially.
So far, nothing seems to help the situation. About the only thing that I haven't done is configure the AX to just join the network rather than extend it...but that would be defeating the purpose of why I bought it in the first place (to stream iTunes and extend network).
I never had issues with my old set-up, but then I had it configured as a WDS because I didn't have the option to "extend" the network as it was an older AX and Airport Express.

  • New Airport Extreme (6th Gen) Dropping Connection from Time to Time.

    Problem:
6th Generation Airport Extreme drops connection intermittently at random times.
    Set Up:
6th Generation Airport Extreme (main router - no hard drive/not a time capsule) located center of house on the main floor. 2 Range extenders each approximately 30+ feet away from main router. First range extender (Airport Express - newest generation) located on the third floor parallel to main. Second range extender (Airport Express - new generation) is located at the end of the kitchen (main floor).
Main Router is connected straight from a Motorolla Surfboard modem on a foyer table at the center of the house.
Range extenders connected to Main Router wirelessly and at wall outlett height.
    Previous Setup:
Same setup as above but, with the 5th Generation Airport Extreme instead of the 6th Generation.
    Firmware:
    All current versions.
    Devices:
    1 SONY VAIO VGN-FW490J
    HP Notebook G60
    Several WEMO outlets
    1 iPad Mini
    1 iPad 2
    1 iPhone 5
    1 Motorolla RAZR MAXX
    Macbook Pro
iMac (wired from main router on foyer table)
Note: All of these routers/range extenders/modem/computers are plugged into surge protected outlets.
    Notes:
With the new Airport Extreme my family and I have been experiencing intermettent connection drops. The amber light on the main router turns on and within a few minutes turns green and connection resumes again. This has been happening for a few days now ever since I purchased the new router. This has not happened before with the 5th generation router, which I donated to our church.
I have not exchanged the product yet. I will be initiating a Complete Power Recycle after some suggested solutions in a bit. I have contacted my Internet Service Provider (Comcast) for a line check and found no problems.
Has anyone found any solutions to resolve the intermittent connection drops? Is reverting to the previous firmware going to solve this?
I would like some insights before trying to do all this. Thank you all for your time.
    P.s.
I've done a detailed post since posts like these is frequently asked questions on set-up, devices, connections, etc:

    Update:
Before I went to exchange my 6th Gen Extreme, I ran through all possible solutions from complete power recycle to no devices connected. I even went out of my way to my cousin's house to test it out. The same problem still kept coming.
I was able to exchange my 6th Gen Airprt Extreme with another 6th Gen Extreme the other day. I set it up how the instructions told me and within an hour it did the exact same problem as the previous 6th Gen Extreme. I gave up and decided to get the ASUS RT-AC66R (ASUS RT-AC66U is the same, just the 'R' is Best Buy's model.)
The ASUS router is just as great as the 6th Gen Router. You can actually get it down to $180 by price matching to Amazon. The ASUS router has 3 antennas that you can adjust according to where the signal is used more. I pointed them more towards the backyard, upstairs, and the living room. The range is by far better than the Extreme because of this. I was able to drive down a good block (3-4 houses down) and still connected to my router. Also it has 2 USB ports which was fantastic for me so I can plug in my external hard drive and a non-wireless printer. It has many more features that I really liked that I didn't even know was possible. The router utility interface is a bit confusing at first but, it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
Some features that I liked with the ASUS was the ability to have multiple guest network with time limits. 3 for 2.4gHz and 3 for 5gHz. I think that Airport guest accounts are only allowed 2.4gHz but not a 5gHz. Though I only needed 1 for each but, I can see this working well for businesses.
Another feature is traffic manager. I am able to set specific bandwith for different types of use such as, high priority 80%-100% bandwith for gaming, medium priority badwith 70%-90% for HD media streaming/data transfer, and 50%-80% low bandwith for casual web surfing. It also has it's own "beamforming" so that data isn't free roamed.
Lastly it has AiCloud sync which is basically like having a hard drive into your router but, much like having a Dropbox at the same time.
More or less I think I'll stick with the ASUS router rather than going with the new Airport Extreme. I think that it's more on firmware issue than it is hardware. If you are not willing to switch to another brand and want to keep staying with Apple, I recommend going back to the 5th generation until a new firmware or rebuilt 6th gen extreme is out.
I have not found any problem with the ASUS router and no intermittent connectivity issues.
Now I am not trying to make you buy the ASUS router. I'm merely expressing how great the product is.
I do have 60 days from Best Buy return policy to try out the ASUS (and report of any malfuntions) and if within that time a new firmware is out for the Extreme. I highly doubt I'll go back to the extreme though.
    Hope this helped!!

  • Airport Extreme problems--drops connection and can't change password

Hi, I am having multiple problems with my Airport Extreme (n) base station. All of these problems occur on all three of my machines. MacBook Pro 2007 model, MacBook Pro i7 2.66, and iMac 24".
    1. Sometimes the airport connection works, but then drops off for hours at a time with no explanation, and then starts working again by itself. The green light is lit all the time. Also the airport bars on my menu bar are showing that it's connected. However when I go through diagnostics it says I don't have a connection and to restart the modem, which I do to no avail.
    2. When it is connected, there is often strange download activity (shown via istats menu), even when no applications are open. It's around 200k. When I turn the airport off the downloading stops. This only happens via airport base station connection, not when connected via ethernet.
    3. I have tried numerous times to reset my AE base station password via airport utility. I go through the process. It tells me the configuration changes were successful and then it restarts the base station. When I reconnect the airport connection, it still uses the old password. I cannot get it to actually accept the new password.
Does anyone have similar experiences? I am not sure what to do and have not seen any simiar threads in the forum.
    Thanks for any help,
    lula

Yes, I am pretty sure it isn't that. That modem and it's connection works fine, but it's on the other side of the house.
These various problems (connection dropping, mysterious download when no apps are on, and not being able to change password) all started about two months ago, before that I never had problems with the airport. I have had the same ADSL modem (provided by my phone/cable company) the whole time.
What possible problems do you think the provided modem could cause?
And why am I not be able to change my airport password? That part really puzzles me.
Do you think if I bought a new modem--one completely independent and not connected to a particular isp it would solve the problem. I am willing to try that, but I don't know if it will make a difference.

  • IMac Airport continues to drop connection

I seem to be having the exact same issue that many of you have.  My iMac is the only piece of hardware in my house that has this issue.  The iMac will randomly drop its internet connection.  If you turn off airport and back on it will reconnect just fine, however this is a huge problem.  I can't stay connected long enough to download anything of size from anywhere.  Several apps, iTunes, home sharing.. I can't complete any of it because this connection always drops.
I've seen SEVERAL posts from people with the same issue, and it seems to center around iMacs purchased in 2011, which is what mine is.  Has there been a solution ever verified?

Seems even worse with 10.7.4, some have fixed it by going back to 10.7.3
But might see if this is along the same lines...

I know that apple have released a rubbish version of mac that has problemos with internet sharing
    so here is da answer
    1. go to finder>(computer name)>macintosh HD>library>preferences
    2. copy the entire systemconfiguration folder and systemconfiguration.old folder to your desktop
    3. restart mac and device which you share intenet to
then you have internet that is about 3x slower than the da 10.7.3 intenet sharing, but works
then, just wait for apple to release da 10.7.4 fixed
    please use da steps!

  • 5th Generation Airport Extreme - Wifi Slow, dropping connections

I just upgraded my 2nd generation Airport Extreme to a refurbished 5th generation I purchased from Apple.com
I duplicated the configuration of the old one, as I have a static IP address and what not from my ISP. Also, I have a few port mappings for outside access. Everything plugged in via ethernet, seems to be working without issue.
Everything wireless, which is to say - a Roku, a desktop/all in one, 3 laptops, 4 smartphones, and a tablet are not working as expected. Oddly enough, they are slow to resolve. For example, going to www.yahoo.com took nearly 20 seconds to resolve. At first I thought it was a DNS service issu, and changed to another set of DNS servers (went from Level 3 to another provider, just to test)..... same thing. Also, computers would also go from connected to "limited connectivity".
Network is a mixed bag Windows 7, 8, and OS X, same with phones, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android, tablet is webOS or something. Everything is at least 802.11 n compatible.
In my Wireless Settings of Airport Utility I have this configured:
    Radio Mode: Automatic - manual 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n
    Radio Channel Selection - 149 5ghz and 1 2.4 ghz
    Security, wpa2
Wireless Network Options: unchecked is 5ghz network name
    Multicast = low
    Country = USA
    Transmit power = 100%
WPA group key timeout = 60 seconds
I unchecked use wide channels, and create a closed network is not checked.
Now, I have a older airport express (I think it's 3rd gen) that I use in a plug that borders my living room / kitchen to extend the network. Nothing peculiar is configured on that thing other than the default network extension settings.
At the moment, it is unplugged, as I was using inSSIDer to make sure my network was configured to the right channels compared to what my neighbors were doing. Everyone else is on 6 or 12, and there are no 5ghz channels in range.
Does anyone know what might be causing the horrific resolution times on my Macbook Pro... it's pretty awful, loading your average websites takes far more time over wifi than over ethernet (also tested this).
Really, nothing changed except some 'newer' hardware was added, the 5th gen airport. Any help is appreciated!

Ok i have a relatively new Extreme and here is what i see on 5 GHz vs 2.4 GHz.
This happens frequently - the 5 GHz wireless connection drops, slows way down, or just does not connect.
I reassociate to 2.4GHz and viola, works perfectly.  This is with 7.7.2 firmware.
Pinging a site on the east coast from the west coast, first on 5 GHz:

THEN ON 2.4 GHZ THIS IS THE NORMAL PING TIME

I just did this and was about to post it when i saw this original post.  This has been a CONSTANT problem with my Airport Extreme since I bought it....   in general 5 GHz coverage pretty much ***** in my house - a two story wood frame house - and its very flaky... very unpredictable.
I suspect the hardware myself... and i work in the wifi tech business...
Message was edited by: Mark Ennamorato1   AND i just was switching back and forth to 5GHz again..im 60 feet away in another room on the same floor, and Airport Utility (yet another piece of junk software but that's another discussion...) cannot even FIND the A.E....until i switch back to 2.4 GHz... clearly this thing is in a bad state right now for some unknown reason
Message was edited by: Mark Ennamorato1  oops wow...Airport Utility actually saw the AE after about a minute on 5 GHz...  finds it in about 1 second on 2.4 GHz.

  • Airport Express w/Time Capsule drops connection

I just integrated my new Time Capsule into our all-Mac network here a couple of days ago and its been fine for the most part but I've noticed that the existing airport express flashes amber for a few seconds every so often (usually once per hour or so) and disconnects everyone sharing files and connections. I have Leopard Server 10.5.2 running as well and this didn't seem to be happening before introducing Server to the mix (it was connected about 48 hours AFTER the time capsule) but the problem seems to lie with the Airport Express. Things are connected as follows:
    Cable modem --> Airport Extreme
Airport Extreme --> 2 ethernet connections to Macs, 1 ethernet connection to Time Capsule
Time Capsule --> 1 ethernet connection to Mac Mini running Leopard Server
I have bridge mode set up and a couple of portables connected to it as well as an Apple TV, all of these seem to be connecting and staying connected just fine - it's the two Mac's connected directly to the Airport Extreme that get hit - the light on the unit (AE) flashes amber for maybe 2-3 seconds and I lose connection to any other macs I was connected to - I can easily re-connect with no problems at all but its obviously kind of a pain when you're working on files from the server, etc. and everything more or less locks up while OS X loses these connections.
Does anyone have any insight into why this might be happening? I've never had any trouble with this prior to Time Capsule/Leopard Server, both of which I allowed to more or less set their own settings on the Airport Extreme figuring that it isn't too complex a set up or anything, it's not like we're a full on 20 client office here or something, just 5 total macs, no pc's, etc.
any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running into exactly the same problem. Configuration is the same as Jackoschild's. I get about an hour of good connection, then signal drops off and I get a rapid set of connects then disconnects. Very frustrating. I'm considering turning off the Airport on the Time Capsule and going with my 54g wireless built-in to the FIOS router it is attached to. Total of two iMacs running 10.5.2 (one 20" G5, one 24" iMac) and four PCs (Windows XP SP2) demonstrating the problem. I NEVER had a drop issue with the FIOS ActionTek wireless.
    Any solutions?
