Airport-enabled MacBookPro can't launch Airport Snow Utility

I connect to my LAN wirelessly on an Airport Extreme Base Station, linking my MacBook, an iMac and a few AirTunes stations. I am fully functioning wirelessly with the laptop and have never had a problem. I am trying to employ an older Airport Snow BS to extend the range of my network but when I launch the Airport Snow Utility, an error message pops up that says: "this computer does not have a wireless card. The Appropriate AirPort hardware was not found on this computer......"
Do I need to downgrade my utility version? Do I need to update it? Is a 2004 MacBook incompatible with a 2001 Airport Base Station?

I am trying to employ an older Airport Snow BS to extend the range of my network...
It is not possible to use the snow AirPort base station (ABS) to wirelessly extend the network. It is not compatible with WDS.

  • Can't access working Airport snow, but it is working.

I want to make some changes to my Airport Graphite (or Snow, if they are different). It is working fine, supporting three other Macs in the house. I want to change the password and maybe upgrade the encryption.
When I launch the AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow (version 4.2.5) I get the message "You can't use this version of the application AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow with this version of Mac OS X. You have Airport Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5".
I tried using AirPort Utility (version 5.4.2). When I launch this I get the message "Airport Utility was unable to find any Apple wireless devices. Make sure the Apple wireless device you want is set up is plugged in".
I tried to be smart about this. I went into Configure Other and put in the IP address and password of my AirPort. It says "Reading the Applie wireless device configuration", then comes up with a dialog box that says "An error occurred while reading the configuration. Make sure the Apple wireless device you want is set up is plugged in (-6753)".
What can I do to access and make changes to my AirPort?
    Thanks,

Not sure why you created two threads but the answer is the same.
Unfortunately AirPort Admin Utility will not run in Snow Leopard (OS 10.6). You will need to run AirPort Admin Utility from a Mac running OS 10.5 or earlier or even from a PC.
The newer AirPort Utility is not compatible with the graphite or snow AirPort base station (ABS).

  • Can't access AirPort Snow from the utility... :-(

dear all, a couple of days ago I got a 2nd hand AirPort base “Snow”, with the idea of setting up a wifi network at home but still having the PowerMac G4 connected via ethernet, as it doesn’t have an AirPort card and I don’t really want to install one. The chap I got the base from told me it was ok, as the base has 2 ethernet plugs, one for the cable coming from the ADSL modem and the other for the cable to the G4, but that I should have set the base as “Bridge”.
When I first connected the base with AirPort Admin Utility (I also downloaded version 4.2.5 for Graphite & Snow) I could easily modify the base and network password, network & base names (I first had to “soft reset” the base as the previous owner couldn’t remember the password) then following the “advanced options” instructions in the Designing AirPort Networks2.pdf found in the cd coming with the base, I removed “the checkmark from the “Distribute IP addresses” checkbox” to set it as bridge... and since then the base can’t be seen anymore from the Admin Utility... I’ve tried both with ethernet or wireless with my iBook, and while this one gets signal, there’s no way to interact in any way with the base. I’ve also tried (more than once) to reset the base back to the factory parameters, but it hasn’t changed anything
Any idea what I should do next?!?
    thanks a lot!!!

Did you follow the instructions in "Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ" when you reset the snow AirPort base station (ABS)?

  • How can I get AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5 to work with OS10.6?

I've upgraded to the latest version of Mac OS and now AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5 won't run. Any suggestions on how to either run this utility or otherwise get access to my old Snow Dual Airport via another method? Airport Utility doesn't see the device, despite repeated scans. My computer and iPad connect no problem to the device, but both iPod and iPhone won't take and hold an IP address. (If any one can help me solve this issue, I can live without access the Airport.)
    Thanks,

Unfortunately, you will need another Mac running a much earlier version of OS X to be able to install AirPort Admin Utility and make any settings chances to the router.
Since the normal life of a wireless router is around 5-6 years of use, now might be the time to consider a new router that will provide far better performance than the older Graphite/Snow AirPort.

  • Airport Extreme card can't see Airport Snow...

As the title says...My brand new MacBook (1 day old) can see my belkin54g router network but there's no connection showing up in Internet Connect to my Airport (Snow). It can't see my Airport Express either...
Neither show up in Airport Admin Utility.
My existing iBook sees the Airport and Express fine...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

The antenna IS plugged in properly and I have triple checked it. More info:
My system: PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0ghz w/2.5gb ram running most up to date OSX. Airport Extreeme Wireless Card, properly installed with antenna plugged in.
My Wireless Network: D-Link DL-614+ 802.11b wireless router. Comcast Digital cable.
Additional Info. My roommates computer, a P.O.S. 5yr+ old HP desktop with a "free" wireless card on it, can easily access our wireless network along with 5 other wireless networks in our area. So I know for sure that our network is setup properly and has an internet connection.
I read the other post and what made me go "hmm..." is this part:
"The AirPort Admin Utility is only for use with AirPort base stations."
So... What do I use to view non-AirPort base stations or as Apple calls it "Third Party Wireless Stations?????" I've clicked the airport icon at the top of the screen and selected "other.." and have tried manually adding the SSID and WEP password, but I always get the error message "AirPort had a problem connecting to the network MyNetworkSSID." or something to that effect. So if I'm not supposed to use the AirPort Admin Utility to view non-third party networks.. how do i get my computer to read my d-link network???

  • File sharing via Airport Snow

    Hi all.
I have two Macs: (1) is an eMac connected via ethernet to an Airport Snow BS, which is in turn connected to the internet via ethernet. (2) is a MacBook that uses a wireless connection to the internet via the same Airport Snow BS.
My question is, why can't the two Macs see one another on the network? I need to file share between them.
    Thank you!

Kmineks, Welcome to the discussion area!
    Yes they can.
If you want the eMac to be visible to the MacBook, on the eMac go to System Preferences->Sharing preference pane and enable File Sharing.
On the MacBook use the Finder's G0->Connect to Server... command to find the eMac. Then from the MacBook log into the eMac using a valid eMac user's name and password.
To go the other direction follow a similar process swapping the 2 machines.

  • HP JetDirect 170X and Airport Snow - TCP/IP setup?

Let me just say first, I have no experience in this... so I want to add my HP LaserJet 1200 that I just got the HP JetDirect 170X printer server for as a wireless printer routed through my Airport. I have it connected via ethernet to my LAN port in my Airport Snow base station.
My big question is: How do I figure out the IP address for it? HP's support application is OS9 based, and doesn't see my printer in the Apple Share printers. This is the step that HP tells me to go through to get the IP address, but if it can't find the printer, I can't really get to that step.
I have Apple Share on. I have enabled printer sharing. But I can't figure out what IP address to give when I go to add it as a TCP/IP printer in the OSX printer setup utility. For kicks, I gave it the Airport IP address, thinking that's where it needed to look, and added it as a printer, and it seemed to accept that, but I still can't print to it... how long should I wait to see if something comes out? I get the "will retry in 10 seconds..." then "in 20 seconds..." once I send a print job to print.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Never mind. I figured it out... I didn't recognize the printer name in the Apple talk list of available printers (it came up as some weird "Carpenters/Caspers" name that I've never seen before and I thought that might be my airport picking up someone else's computer. After figuring that out, following the HP website's instructions worked like a charm when I assigned it a manual IP address.

  • Need AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow

hey there.....any help would be greatly appreciated.....
I ave passed along my graphite base station to my brother in law for his new iMac and it seems he needs the "AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow" to get it set up. The new "Airport Utility" doesn't seem to recognize it. Is the utility still available for download? I can't seem to find it anywhere?
Another option....is it possible to copy and paste the utility into my iDisk and have him download it from there?? Not sure it that will work??
Again...many thanks for any help anyone can offer!!!!!

AirPort Admin Utility, version 4.2, which works with Graphite and Snow base stations, can be found within the download of AirPort 4.2 (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport42formacosx1033.html).
I tried it on my MacBook running Mac OS X 10.4.10, with a Graphite base station, and it works fine, so far as I can tell.
I did not actually try to install AirPort 4.2 using the installer, because I was afraid of messing with my system when all I wanted was the utility. Here is how to get it:
    - Download the disk image AirPortSW42.dmg from the Web page mentioned above. If the installer launches, quit the installer.
    - Double-click the disk image to mount a volume named "AirPort 4.2 Update."
    - Within the AirPort 4.2 Update window, ctrl-click on "AirPortSW.pkg."
    - Select "Show Package Contents."
    - Open the "Contents" folder.
    - Double-click the "Archive.pax.gz" file, which causes an "Archive.pax" file and an "Archive" folder to be extracted to the desktop.
    - Open the "Archive" folder, the "Applications" folder within it, and the "Utilities" folder within that.
    - The AirPort Admin Utility is there. You can move it to Applications/Utilities and discard everything else that was downloaded.
Thanks to Tesserax (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5136389&#5136389) for recently explaining how to extract an AirPort utility from a download package.
Although I have never seen "AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow," it probably was the same thing as AirPort Admin Utility, just renamed.

  • Password-protect Airport Snow as bridge on Time Capsule

I set up my new Time Capsule (removing the Netgear router) to my Comcast cable modem and eventually got all my Macs, PCs, and printers connected. I applied WPA encryption to the TC. I'd turned my old Airport Snow into a bridge so long ago that I forgot how to get into its settings. It allows one to connect to my network without a password. I want to rename it and set up password protection on it. Can anyone lay out the steps? thanks!

I'm not sure why you still need the Snow as a bridge if you are also using Time Capsule, but here goes:
Use a computer that either is connected wirelessly to the wireless network generated by the Snow or is connected via Ethernet to the Snow's LAN port. Launch AirPort Admin Utility (also called AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow). In the list of base stations that appears, select the Snow and click "Configure". Type in the base station password. (The base station password is not the same thing as the network password, which you aren't using.) If you have forgotten the base station password, reset the base station. (See Resetting the AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet).) In the AirPort pane of AirPort Admin Utility, in the bottom half of the pane under "AirPort Network" type in a new name for the network. Click "Change Wireless Security" and add a password. Click "OK" and "Update".
You won't be able to set up WPA security on the Snow; it only can use WEP (which is far from secure).

  • Password Protect Airport Snow (M8440)

Hello. I have two airports at two different physical locations. Airport #1 (Big City) works fine and is connected to a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.3 and is Password Protected. However, Aiport #2 (Country) is an old Airport Snow which is currently NOT password protected. I thought it would be an easy thing to accomplish, but Airport Utility 6.0 doesn't even give me an option. In other words, it recognizes the Airport to funtion, but doesn't give me an opportunity to assign a password. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure why you still need the Snow as a bridge if you are also using Time Capsule, but here goes:

  • Airport Snow WDS

    HI
Can i use my old Airport Snow with Dual 10/100 with my 2 new Airport express for WDS? I want to use the Airport as base station. Are they any updates to enable?

Matthew, Welcome to the discussion area!
The answer is no, the snow AirPort base station (ABS) does not have the ability to do WDS.

  • Problems with my Airport Snow. Please someone help!

I had an airport snow base station for a couple of years. I bought it used, and after some initial difficulty, I manage to set it up and it worked fine for a little while. At some point it started failing to connect and started giving me a message that it was looking for PPoE. I am using a cable connection, and the station is connected with the cable modem. I was told that PPoE is a protocol that is not used by that connection. The advise was to unplug everything and reboot. Most of the time it worked, then it started getting harder. Everytime I gave up, and retry days later, it usually worked.
Now something else is happening. When I connect it, it works fine at first, then the signal starts getting weaker and weaker until it just goes to zero, at which point no rebooting works I have to connect with the cable directly into the computer.
I know I am computer illiterate, but I don't know who to ask. The couple of friends of mine who are competent can't figure out what the problem is. Apple would not talk to me because I don't have a protection plan. The cable people are completely clueless...
I would really appreciate it if some of you could give me a hand. If the thing is useless, then I'll have to be patient and wait for a little while until I have 100 dollars to buy a new one...
    Thanks

Problems 1 through 4 are the topic of many (often long) past discussions in this forum. Though I hate to say it, I have yet to see anything that comes close to a "solution" for the problems you describe. Sometimes, Problem #3 results from radio interference which might be alleviated by changing the default channel the base station transmits on.
Unlike every non-Apple router on the market, Apple's Airport Base Station must be configured using Apple's own "Airport Utility" software application. It is not possible to configure an Airport Base Station using a web browser.
Regrettably, in your case it sounds like you would be better off continuing to use your previous Linksys wireless router.

  • Airport Snow and new laptop

    Hi,
I got a new MacBook for Christmas. We have a Power G4 in the study that has been connected to the internet via the Airport snow for years. My kids have their own laptops but are away at college so I didn't know this problem existed till I got mine. Anyway, after months of trying to connect to the internet via the airport on my laptop, I am lost. I know it works because the G4 gets internet. The laptops says I am connected via the airport to our network. I get 30 seconds of internet on my laptop and that's it. It stops loading after that. Is my laptop compatible with this older wireless Airport or does my Airport need upgrading? I have tried powering off my modem and Airport and the most internet time I got on my laptop was about 4 hours...maybe. I took my laptop on a business trip and it worked perfectly in the hotel , wirelessly. I am so tired of this, but I don't want to give up on the snow if I don't have to. I have the modem connected to the WAN port. THe Snow is V.4.0.9. I have also tried to change the channel once on the G$ but not sure if I am doing this right. Do I have to change the channel on the laptop too? Do I have to reboot after I do ??? Please help me.
