Airport Expres & Air Tunes Problem

I have three airport express bas stations. Two newer ones (802.11n) and one older one (possibly first generation - certainly not "n" enabled anyway). I have them set to join my wireless network which is running through an Orange Livebox so I can have music played via airtunes in various rooms of the house. Whenever the microwave oven is used in the kitchen, the airport express unit that is in the kitchen immediately cuts out and goes to "blinking orange" mode, but it also takes out the base station in the lounge? Both of these are the newer "n" enabled units. However, the older airport express unit carries on fine?? It is equidistant with the unit in my lounge to the microwave and airport express unit in my kitchen. I also have a dual band II time capsule solely for backup purposes and this remains blissfully unaffected!
My questions are as follows:
1. Is the microwave oven interference a common problem and is there a way around it (other than not using the microwave!)
2. If my older airport express unit remains unaffected, can I "down grade" the newer ones to say a wireless "g" mode to see if that helps?
3. Am I being a complete techno spaz here and missing something completely obvious??

You might try forcing a specific WiFi channel. For 2.4 GHz try channels 1, 6, or 11. In at least some countries the higher 5 GHz channels (>= 149) can use a much higher power level than the lower channels.

  • Old Airport Express, New Airport Extreme, Air Tunes - No joy

    I'll try to be brief:
Have a Mini, that was running 10.3, and using an old Airport extreme to enable Air Tunes to a stereo in another room. All was well.
Updated the Mini to Leopard. Installed a new Airport Extreme. Did this so a new Macbook in the family could have a wireless internet connection. The new Macbook sees the new Airport extreme and is happy.
Open iTunes on the Mini, try to Air Tunes the music to the stereo.... No joy. iTunes says it can't find the Airport Express.
So I begin a LONG string of stuff to try to get the Express to be seen by something, anything...
Failing all attempts, I do a factory reset. The express now wants a password, won't take "public", does take the old password (which you would think would not be the case with a factory reset), but after churning a while the set up utility tosses and error that it can't connect. I even hooked the little buzzard up to the Extreme with a cable. Can't configure the Express.
Tried updating the Express's firmware. (its on 6.1). The updater sees it, but fails when trying the update.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.

Did you try hooking it up with your mini (with cable)?
    Richard.

  • Air tunes dropout on Airport Express

I am still getting a drop out on music using Airport with Air Tunes over the Airport express wireless hookup. I have installed the latest firmware ( v6.3) which is supposed to correct this problem but it is still very annoying. It works fine using my G4 laptop but not the G5 iMac. I just had the airport card installed on the G5. Could it be a bad card? Any other ideas. All software is current.

Thanks for the tip. I read in other discussions that I should update to 6.3 (I already had that version) and select "Multiple Speakers" in iTunes (this didn't work).
So taking your advice, I switched my Airport Extreme base station off Auto to Channel 10 (still had the random dropouts of signal) so I went to Channel 1. This seems to have worked.
    Thanks again.

  • Airport express: use internet and air tunes at the same time?

    Hi,
I'd like to use and airport express to create a wirelss network (and so use the internet) AND stream music to my stereo with air tunes - at the same time. Is this possible? So far, I have been able to create a wireless network (and use the internet) OR use the airport express to play music. But whenever my internet works, itune can't find the base station - claiming it "can't be found on the network?"
Can you do both at once?
I'm connecting to an ethernet jack (I'm at a college). It's not a cable modem or DSL. Is this the problem?
Under "music" in the utility configuration. I've selected "Enable Air tunes at the base station." I can't select "Enable Airtunes over ethernet port." When i try to change the network options to allow me to select this "ethernet port" option, I have to tell it how to "distribute IP" addresses. i don't know how to do this, and everything I've tried destroys my internet connection.
I appreciat any help you have to offer. thanks
    1.5 GHz PowerPC G4, 12'' powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    solution:
My problem ended up being specific to the network I'm using. There is evidently another router on the ethernet system that was assigning my airport express an IP address (192. ...), rather than letting the network DCHP give me a direct IP address (something like 160. ...). The 192 address made it impossible for iTunes to see my express base station, but I was getting internet, passed through this other router.
The fix - and I'm not sure if this is totally kosher - was to manually enter a correct IP address for my base station. I got the IP address by seeing what this other router was sending my computer to get onto the internet. It gave me the correct router and a workable (160. ...) IP address. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to manually pick an IP address on the ethernet, but this one is working for the time being, and now iTunes can find my base station.

  • Can't get itunes to connect to airport express via air tunes

    Hi,
I just bought and installed an airport express (for windows 7) everything is now connected but i can't get itunes to recognize my airport express via air tunes. I can see the multiple speakers in itunes, but when i click on it to connect to airport it just comes up with connecting, loads for about a minute then minimizes without connecting.
Has anyone else experienced this? How can i get this to work?

You've probaby solved this by now, but if not... When upgrading itunes on a Vista or Windows 7 machine with Windows Firewall running for some reason Bonjour can't get through the firewall and thus Airplay does not work. Not good when all your Hi-fi's are connected via airport express!
I found to resolve the issue you have to install an older version of Bonjour. It won't work if you try to do this straight from Apple.  So try this...
    1. Firstly install and older version of itunes from the web (say version 10.1) Try www.oldapps.com
    2. Then find the Bonjour file in program files
    3. Cut and paste it to your desktop with its contents
    4. Uninstall itunes and Bonjour via your control panel (the desktop file of Bonjour you moved will still be there).
    5. Install your new version of itunes, say version 10.5, from the apple website.
    6. Before opening it go to program files and cut the (newly installed) Bonjour file and paste it somewhere different to the desktop (you can't just delete it). It does not matter where you won't be needing it.
    7. Now Cut and paste the old version of Bonjour you stuck on the desktop in Program files in place of the one you just moved.
    8. Hey presto, Airplay, Windows firewall and your Airport Express' should all get on again.
    Hope this works...

  • Want to use my Airport express to connect to my itune-air tune only.

I am travelling with my Airport Express to different countries, where I am not using it as a device to connect to the internet, but to connect my external speakers and want to enjoy my itune Air tunes.
I have had it set up back home, to connect to the internet and my external speakers.
Now, my Airport express is flashing amber, in the airport utility, I see my AirP Express, but I it takes forever to read base station configurations, so I can't make any changes.
All I need is to be able to use my itunes over my airtunes, using my Airp Express.

Ah - that fully explains what is going on.
    In that case:
    1. if you are currently on the road, you will need to do a hard reset of the Airport Express to return it to its default mode of a standalone base station. You will then be able to access it and configure it as necessary. And yes, the amber flashing light will persist. And lastly, will will need to reconfigure it from scratch as a remote base station on your home wireless LAN when you return home.
    2. if you are home right now, read up on the use of the Airport Express stored profiles feature, to save its current settings as a remote base station. You can also create a profile for the Airport Express to function as a standalone base station for when you are on the road. Just remember to switch profiles before you hit the road. If you forget to switch profiles before going on the road, just do a "soft reset" of the Airport Express, connect to its default wireless network, and use the Airport Utility to switch the Airport Express to your previously saved "on the road" profile.

  • AirPort Express with Air Tunes and wired router

Do any of you using AirPort Express with Air Tunes as a base station have it connected to a wired router, just as an added precaution?
    thanks,
    --h

As far as I know, AirPort Express w/tunes has a firewall, but a given router may offer more protection options than just a firewall. I'm wondering about security on the wired side of the connection, not the wireless side.

  • Air Tunes not working after "8" install.

I have installed iTunes 8 successfully. Everything works great except my ever dependable Air Tunes / Airport EXpress hook-up now does not work. Some Unknown error. I have re-installed iTunes and reconfigured AirPort Express. Nothing. Can someone help? Jerry H

    From MacFixIt:
+iTunes no longer streams to airtunes devices, giving 'unknown error' -15000 or -3256 Many users are experiencing problems with iTunes 8 streaming music to devices that are connected using "Airtunes". The feature does not work, and users get either error -15000 or error -3256 which iTunes claims are "unknown errors". Error -15000 can be caused if users have old firmware on their Airport Express devices that are being used for Airtunes, so users should check the firmware on the device to ensure it is updated to the latest (version 6.3). Error -3256 may be caused by firewall interference with the Airtunes connection, and users should ensure that iTunes is listed in the system firewall (System Preferences --> Security --> Firewall) and is given "Allow" permissions for network connections.+

  • Internet stops working but air tunes keep going

Hey there, first post on the board. Usually I can find the problem but this time I can't.
I have a D-link wbr-2310 wireless router and got myself the new airport express N 3 weeks ago.
The first week everything was fine and all of a sudden my internet was on and off. My airpot signal is always full but the pages keep looking for connection.
The weird thing is, Air tunes keeps going good at the same time.
The only solution so far is to turn off and then turn on the airport connection from my macbook but doing this every 10 minutes isn't the solution.
Did someone experience the same problem?
I don't know much about network but it looks like my airport express is taking the connection away from the router.
    Thanks to you guys.

I will try going back to WEP.
I found a solution for my internet to keep working now.
Letting my Airport Utility open keeps me online...
The Airport Express does not disappear anymore.
But I need to let the Utility open...
If I close the program......Bang! No internet, no Express.
    This is really weird.

  • Proximity issue with Air Tunes

    Hi-
I have read several posts about this but nothing directly related to what I have found.
I have been using an Airport Express for years specifically for steaming music wirelessly via Air Tunes. In the last several months I have noticed that intermittently Air Tunes cuts out.  Recently I have found that this has to do with the proximity of my iPhone or other devices proximity to the Air Port Express.
As soon as I get within a few feet of the Air Port Express the music will cut off, when I move further away it resumes.  I have tested this extensively and can replicate it without issue so it really seems to be a proximity issue.
This never used to happen, but now happens all the time.  I have an IPhone 5 but the problem occurred with my iPhone 4.  It also occurs with my wife’s iPhone 3GS and my iPad (first gen).
Has anyone else noticed this proximity issue with streaming wirelessly?

    Thanks Chris for this link.
Before launching this action, I have one question : as I am french, I want to install the french
    localized version of Community Help.
With the procedure you sent, will it be possible to have such a version, or does-it point only on
    the US help version ?
Or should I connect to an adobe.fr site ?Thanks again for our help.

  • Air tunes via AX:  can't find

I can't figure out how to use Air Tunes. Plugging in the speakers doesn't do anything. There isn't an icon on the itunes window. On the Airport Utility menu under Settings, music is grayed out (as are all the others.) The AX works fine for internet, though I've had some set up problems.

Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) settings for streaming iTunes:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    *Music tab*
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    *In iTunes:*
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Air Tunes from non-wireless PC

OK, so I have a base PC that gets it's internet connectivity directly, but is connected to a Netgear wireless router to provide the wireless network in the house.
Can I use Air Tunes on this PC, or can I only use it via wireless connectivity to the network?
I can't seem to get the AirPort to properly see the network, (I'm programming it wirelessly from the laptop), but that is a discussion for another thread.

Answer to the first question, yes you can use this airport express on your existing wireless network provided by the netgear router
*once the airport has successfully connected to the network wireless you can use airtunes from any computer on the network wired or wirelessly
*one major thing ive had a problem with is depending on which form of security you may be using on your network such as WEP or WPA security you may have to change it to better accomidate your express
*if your using WEP security, you'll want to use what is called the Hex equivalent password which is a 26 character password thats created from your password
Ex: say my password to connect wirelessly to my netgear router is cheesewhiz, the router then recreates the password as 26 characters such as 0032af3eb2 etc.. if unsure how to obtain the password you can either consult the manufacturer of the router or even check the forums if unfamilar with the router configuration of the netgear

  • Air Tunes cutting out

When I wake my MBP and play iTunes my air tunes cuts in and out. I turn airport off and then back on and air tunes does not cut out anymore. It just started this in the past week.

there are sources of wireless interference that can't be cured by changing the radio channel. hardwiring the express units to the extreme would probably be the only remedy if you want a reliable connection.
consider using powerline adapters such as these.

    Hello Achates:
I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

  • Apple TV Air Tunes error -15000

Since I have installed iTunes 8 my apple tv has been acting very strange. Has anyone else noticed?
It seems to be slower, it has crashed once or twice, the last time it crashed It blew away all my content. I had to re-sync my photo's etc..
But my main gripe now is, I use it as an air tunes client, and that consistently doesn't work. I just get an Unknown error -150000
My Apple TV is connected directly to my netgear adsl wifi router with a cable, my iMac is a wifi client. I also have an air port express which works perfectly.
Can any one shine any light on my problem?
    Many Thanks
    Paul

I (and many others) have the same problem since updating to iTunes 8. There is nothing you can do about it, unfortunately. We'll have to wait for an iTunes update to have this problem fixed.
