Airport express & 2Wire

Seeking insstruction on integrating Airport Express as wireless source to replace ATT 2Wire router, e.g., 2Wire connects to DSL with phone jack which Airport Express does not accept.

I don't see how you can. The AEX only connects by Ethernet then provides a wireless network. You can only do the reverse which is for the AEX to connect wirelessly to a source, then provide a connection via Ethernet cable. You need a DSL modem/router that has a telephone jack to connect to your DSL phone line.

  • Imac-ethernet-airport express-2wire gateway

I bought an imac g4, 17" 1.25GHz. I am trying to connect to a ATT DSL 2Wire gateway. The iMac's wireless was via a hawking usb adaptor. That worked clunky, and when I tried to update the drivers it started crashing the system. I uninstalled the drivers and now the stick is non functional.
I went to the genius bar and asked what to do. Answer: buy a used airport extreme card on ebay. I did that and installed it. The reception was very weak, and I could only connect if I was within 4 feet of the gateway.
I went back to the genius bar. The genius put a different airport extreme card in the iMac and verified the weak reception; genius says the antenna doesn't work. I asked him what to do. He said third party repair shop to fix the antenna, or connect with airport express.
I have an airport express that I use for airtunes, so I decided to try that. I have it configured to Join A Wireless Network and to Allow Ethernet Clients. I had previously connected my Viera TV this way, but it was a pretty fragile connection.
The iMac says that ethernet is working but it will not connect to the gateway. (i.e, in network assistant the first button is green but the second is yellow.)
    Any help would be appreciated.

    1. Is it correct to configure Airport Express to Join Another Network and Allow Ethernet Clients?
    Yes
    2. If so, what do I have to do to get the Imac to connect via the ethernet connection? (on 10.4.11)
Verify that you have a good ethernet cable by testing it. Then verify that the ethernet card is working correctly on the iMac. You'll need to temporarily connect the iMac directly to one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire router. If you can connect to the Internet, you know the ethernet card is good on the iMac.
Then verify that the ethernet port is working on the AirPort Express by testing it with another computer's ethernet port. Turn off the wireless on the computer and verify that you can connect. If you can't, power cycle the entire network as follows:
Power everything down, order is not important
Power up the modem first and let it run a few moments, then start the 2Wire router and let it run a few moments, then the AirPort Express the same way and finally your computers one at a time the same way
Once you have verified that the ethernet port is working on the AirPort Express and the other computer, try connecting it to the iMac. Power cycle as above if necessary.
    3. Is it possible to fix the airport antenna, or is it a hopelessly expensive repair?
Assuming that the antenna is at fault, it's almost always a very simple connector that has come loose or wire that needs re-soldering. This takes a few seconds to fix. But it probably takes an hour to disassemble the computer first, then assemble it after the repair. It's time intensive, so you might want to get an estimate first. If no problem is found, you'll still pay the same labor rate for the "repair".

  • Slow internet: Mac Mini - Airport Express - 2Wire modem

I have SBC DSL, which came with a 2Wire wireless modem/router. I then bought an Airport Express and nicely networked a printer and two Windows XP Machine. The trouble started when I bought (ironically) a Mac Mini with a wireless (Airport Extreme?) ethernet card. The Mac has much slower download speeds! We're talking 150 kbps on the Mac, versus ~1 Mbps on the Win XP box.
I'm guessing there is a magic setting on the DSL modem which will help. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Morgan Brown

This problem lies with the Mac mini - there aren't any settings on the DSL modem that will fix this problem. I would start by having an Apple service center confirm the wireless interface in this Mac mini is performing properly (since it is still covered by the warranty).

  • A Time Capsule, Airport Express and AT&T 2Wire walk into a bar...

Alas, I'm sure this question has been asked before, but my reserach keeps turning up separate answers.  So I thought I'd turn to this forum for some advice.  Ultimately I'm seeks suggestions on various ways to configure my network to allow easy backups, connection two rooms, and wirelessly print from anywhere.
    I have a:
Time Capsule (dual band) - used for Time Machine backups
    Airport Express (older)
    and new 2Wire 3800HGV-B wireless modem/router from AT&T (for U-verse internet/TV)
    My room configuration is:
Living room with TV, internet connected DVD player, and new AT&T 2Wire Wireless U-verse modem
Home office with 2 desktop comptuers (no wireless cards) and a USB printer.
Two roaming laptops which move around the rest of the house
The livingroom and the office can't be connected with a physical wire.
What I was hoping to do was setup my office with the Time Capsule in the office as a wired hub, and then use it as a wirelessly bridge to the 2Wire network.  But as I understand it, a Time Capsule can't be used as a bridge to a non-Apple product.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Alternately I could always get wireless cards for the desktop computers, but this leaves the printer.
I've read suggesitons of people who have used their TC as the primary router, disabling wireless on their AT&T 2Wire, and hooking the two together with ethernet.  Others who just join the TC to the 2Wireness network.  But really what I'm seeking is a way to join the two rooms.
Any thoughts?  Am I asking the right questions or providing the right information?
    Much thanks,
    dana.

So I figured I'd go with an initial suggestion and attached my TC via ethernet to the 2Wire modem/router in my living room, and make the TC my primary wireless router.
    Good plan
since both will be in the same room, I assume I need to disable wireless on the 2Wire
    Correct
What kind of configuration do I need to do on the TC, or do I just following the wizard and select 'Extend existing network'?
You can follow the guided setup or I can give you a step by step manual setup. In either case, you will configure the TC to "Create a wireless network".
("Extend" is only used if the TC connects using wireless only....you will be using Ethernet from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2-Wire to the WAN port (world icon) on the TC.
The guided setup will normally sense that the TC is connected to another router and suggest that the TC be configured in Bridge Mode, which is the correct setting. Otherwise, select the Bridge Mode option when it is presented.
Note....If you have a newer dual band TC, the Guest Network option cannot be enabled when the TC is configured in Bridge Mode. So, if you want a "Guest" network, maybe the 2-Wire could provide that service.
Should I attach this (via ethernet) to the TC or the 2Wire?
Pick a LAN <-> port on either one, your choice, whichever is easier
What should the AT&T DVR be connected to?
I'm not familiar with an AT&T DVR, but if it connects via Ethernet, you can connect to a LAN <-> port on either the 2-Wire or the TC
For printing, my plan is to attach the printer through USB to the Airport Express and then connect that wirelessly to the TC network (though my first attempt at this failed to connect).
Suggest that you get the TC up and working smoothly. Then tackle the Express.

  • Airport Express and 2wire

Just set up an ATT Internet DSL connection, and received a "2wire" modem and wireless base station.
My plan was to set up Aiport Express as a Client, to utilize iTunes through my speakers.
2-Wire does not recognize the Airport Express...
    Here is the documentation...
    Here is what Apple says....
If you want to use your AirPort Express in client mode but unwittingly try adding it to a network that is protected with an access control list (ACL), AirPort Express will flash its status light amber once per second. This means that it wasn't able to join the network and get an IP address.
The ACL is stored on the base station that is hosting the wireless network, and it contains the MAC (media access control) address of each device that is allowed to join the network. To use your AirPort Express as a wireless client, its MAC address must be added to the ACL.
AirPort Express has two MAC addresses, and both are listed on its case. The one labeled "AirPort ID" is the MAC address for its wireless interface, and the one labeled "Ethernet ID" is the one for its Ethernet port.
If you are the network administrator, you simply need to update your ACL using AirPort Admin Utility so that it includes the "AirPort ID" of the AirPort Express. If not, speak with the person who runs the network.
    Here is what 2-Wire says....
By default, there is no enabled ACL on the 2Wire Residential Gateway. Due to the fact that you are using a non-2Wire brand wireless adapter, which we have no product specific expertise on, you will need to either refer to the documentation that came with the wireless adapter or actually contact the manufacturer of the adapter for detailed instructions on configuring their wireless products. They will require three pieces of information from you in order to be able to assist you.
The first piece of information is the SSID or network name. The SSID will be 2WIRExxx where the WIRE must be capital and the xxx = the last 3 numbers of your Serial Number which is the 12 digit number on the bottom of the HomePortal.
The second and third pieces of information required will be the encryption key and key length/format. The Encryption key is the 10 digit number off of the bottom of the HomePortal that has brackets around it. The key length/format is hexadecimal and 64 bit.
You will need to make certain your adapter has those configured into it or it will not work.
    HELP!
What the heck am I to do!

  • Airport Express-ATT 2Wire Wireless Setup

I am attempting to set up a new Airport Express with an existing 2Wire Wireless network. Once I get the "join a wireless network" password set up, when I update, I'm kicked off my 2Wire network, and my computer cannot find the Airport.
I have set this Airport up on another network with no problems.
Is there a known issue that I am missing?

When the AirPort Express does not join another wireless network successfully, it's almost always a question of finding correct, compatible security settings. It's not enough to simply enter the correct password.
You'll need to "hard reset" the Express by holding the reset button in until the amber light begins to blink more quickly and then try the configuration again.
Perhaps the simple chart below will give you some ideas. In order to do this correctly and avoid repeated setup attempts, you'll need to get into the settings for the 2 Wire to see exactly how it is configured, security wise.
The examples below assume that you are using WPA security.
Apple WPA2 Personal = Other Manufacturers WPA2-PSK (AES)
Apple WPA/WPA2 Personal = Other Manufacturers WPA-PSK (TKIP)

  • 2wire home portal and airport express ?

I have a 2Wire home portal 1000hw modem and need some information on how to connect it with my airport express. My 2wire modem is either wireless or ethernet. I would like to connect my modem via ethernet to my airport express and use the airport express to connect to the internet.

  • Airport Express and 2wire gateway

I have a 2wire 2700HG-D gateway and bought an Airport Express today to stream music to my stereo.
When connecting the Airport Express in Client mode, I lose the ability to access the internet from my MacBook. I've followed the steps here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1120146
and while I could probably get this to work, I don't want to have my wireless network unsecured. Is there a way for me to be able to access the internet and stream music to my stereo, and have a secured network?
    Thanks in advance.
    Nick Laeder

Is there a way to either secure the Apple wireless
connection, or for me to access the 2wire encrypted
wireless connection. Does this make sense.
If your 2wire supports WPA I would suggest changing to that.
However if it only supports WEP, then note one of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

Also, I don't get a constant connection with the
Apple connection if I'm in the neighboring room from
the base station. What is the distance that I can be
    from the base station?
    In theory 150 feet.
However wall construction can block a signal quite easily, water pipes, metal, etc...
If possible raise the wireless router higher if you can (ie off the floor) or put it in a different position and see if that makes a difference

  • Airport Express Connection to 2WIRE 1000HW HomePortal?

New to the Mac world. My MacBook is currenly wirelessy connected using my 2WIRE 1000HW HomePortal. Connection is good but I need to connect a printer wirelessly (through the AE USB connection). The 2WIRE 1000HW is a combination DSL Modem and Wireless Router in one box. Do I need to 'disable' the wireless router portion of the 2WIRE 1000HW and use it just as a DSL Modem, or can I just use the AE and 'join' the existing 2WIRE router? OR would it be better to use the AE as the wireless router? The 2WIRE has an ethernet connection in back. What is the best connection (AE > 2WIRE ethernet)? Do I need to change anything in the 2WIRE or AE settings? Will there be a conflict wireless routers? Thanks!

dijman, Welcome to the discussion area!
Do I need to 'disable' the wireless router portion of the 2WIRE 1000HW and use it just as a DSL Modem, or can I just use the AE and 'join' the existing 2WIRE router?
    Either way.
Do I need to change anything in the 2WIRE or AE settings?
If you have the AirPort Express (AX) join the wireless network provided by the 2Wire then no changes need to be made to the AX.
Otherwise you will need to make changes to both.
Will there be a conflict wireless routers?
Not if the AX joins the wireless network or you disable the 2Wire wireless and connect the AX via Ethernet.

  • AT&T 2wire network with Airport Extreme and Airport Express

    Howdy,
I have AT&T DSL with a 2wire 2701hg-b plugged in one room but would like to extend my network to connect my Direct TV in my living room.  Can I somehow connect my Airport Extreme (recently purchased) to the 2wire and use my Airport Express to wirelessly connect the Direct TV in the room?  An additional concern is that my wifi keeps dropping on my Macbook Pro but not on my HP laptop. Any guidance/assistance is greatly appreciated.

Well that's great news. . . I figured it probably just wasn't compatible. Just for the heck of it though, does this tell you anything? (I thought I could post a screenshot but I guess not. Here's the text)

  • 2nd AirPort Express to extend wireless range of 2WIRE Home portal

I have successfully networked 2 pcs and 2 macs wirelessly via my 2WIRE home portal and and AirPort Express which I use to play music throughout my home from all four computers. However, I would like to extend the range of my wireless network into a part of the house which is quite a ways away from my AX and my stereo. Will a second AX achieve this goal? • Cannot get Airport Express to join my AT&T 2wire router

I folled the steps to connect my Airport express to an exiwsting wireless network. The System reboots then goes into flashing Amber state. The Router sees the device but it is not active. Any suggestions on what I need to do to get this attached to my network? I would like to use it to stream I-tunes music to my sterio in the other room. Thanks

Just found solution from another post from Mark:
I had the same problem... couldn't get the AE to join the network. Here is how I got it to work. Go to the 2Wire config page in safari. For me it's <http://192.168.1.254> Go to settings tab. Go to LAN tab. Go to wireless heading. Under "Security", change "Authentication Type" to "WPA2-PSK (AES)". After the 3800HGV-B reboots, use Airport utility to configure the AE to join the wireless network. I have no idea why, but it works. The light is solid green and I can play Airtunes through my antique AE using iTunes or iPhone. Hope it works for you as well. Mark

  • Cannot get Airport Express to join AT&T U-Verse (2Wire) for printing

I just switched to AT&T U-Verse and now cannot get my Airport Express to join the network to provide wireless printing.  When I go through Airport Utility to configure the Airport to join an existing network to provide wireless printing it initally states setting change success and begins a restart process from which it never is found on the network again.  I contacted Apple Care who was very thourough in running various tests and settings and even checking AT&T 2-Wire network settings.  They even replaced my airport (which was 3 years old but covered under the Apple Care I purchased with my new iMac - very cool).  However, new Airport Express was still not able to join the network.  After another hour of working with Apple Care with the new Express the expert advised the issue must be with AT&T 2-Wire security settings.  I contacted AT&T U-Verse internet support and was advised they charge by the hour for network support and there is no guarantee it will be resolved.
    Anyone have this issue?

  • HT4259 How can I extend a wireless network from a 2Wire modem by usingan Airport Express? Years ago I could do this just by plugging in the (old) Airport Express. TIA Travelmonger

How can I extend a wirelss network from a 2Wire modem using an Airport Express? Some years ago using the old Express I was able to do so simply by plugging on the Express witha minimum of tweaking. Still the same?
    TIA
    Travelmonger

    Still the same?
    Unfortunately, no.
Apple's newer "Extend a wireless network" feature was designed to only work with other Apple products, so it would be extremely unlikely that it would work with a 2-Wire device if you plan to extend using wireless only.
If you plan to connect the AirPort Express to the 2-Wire device using a wired Ethernet connection, the Express can be configured to provide more wireless coverage that way.

  • AirPort express and my Bell 2Wire modem?

I have been using the Bell 2Wire modem 2701 HG-G for many years now wirelessly with our MacBook Pro.  Never really encountered any connection issues.  My iPad uses WiFi and depending on where i am in the house will frequently have a poor connection or drop it all together.  I am wondering what my options are to rectify this. These are my thoughts:
    1. I remember a few years back someone at the Apple store saying that this modem was not the best option to use for a Mac. Is this the case? Should i be requesting a different modem from Bell?
    2. If i was to get an Airport Express would this help? Would i be able to install the Express wirelessly and keep it in a different part of the house to maintain a stronger connection?  or does it have to be directly connected to the modem in order to work.
What are my options for getting a stronger connection for my iPad?
    Thanx in advance,
    Amy

    1. I remember a few years back someone at the Apple store saying that this modem was not the best option to use for a Mac. Is this the case? Should i be requesting a different modem from Bell?
Well, they did work for Apple, and would probably pick up a sales commission on any product that they sold, so you might want to to keep that in mind.
    2. If i was to get an Airport Express would this help?
It would provide more wireless coverage in a remote area.....IF....it was connected back to your 2-Wire modem/router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
Would i be able to install the Express wirelessly and keep it in a different part of the house to maintain a stronger connection?
Unfortunately, the Express would not be compatible with the 2-Wire for this purpose.
If you cannot add the Express using a wired Ethenret connection, check with your Internet Service Provider to see if they have a device that is compatible with the 2-Wire product.
There are other options, but that would involve buying 2 AirPort Express devices.....one to connect directly to your 2-Wire device and the other to "extend" the signal using wireless only.
