Airport express 802.11g and 802.11n?

Hi whats the difference between these two? can they both work for my itouch and mini mac?

The 802.11n protocol is newer and faster than 802.11g; click here for more information. The iPod touch and Mac mini will be limited to 802.11g.

  • Can you disable 802.11g and 802.11a on an Airport Card?

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable 802.11a and 802.11g functionality on a MacBook Airport card? I have a very old 802.11b access point and the airport card seems to be making it fail. I was hoping that by turning off 802.11g or potentially adjusting some other airport parameters I might be able to keep the AP from crashing. I'm hoping to keep the AP I have because it has an integrated print server which has been great. If there is no way to modify the settings on the airport card, I guess I'll need to upgrade my AP.
    Thanks.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Well, I should have used the advice I give to everyone else. Even though my wireless router is very old, there was a firmware upgrade for it. Even though the release notes for the firmware said nothing about it fixing a problem with a MacBook, I upgraded to the latest firmware. After a week or so of testing, it seems to have resolved the problem with the AP going dead when the MacBook was using it.

  • Having both 802.11g and 802.11n devices on a new dual-band AEBS

Although I don't own a dual-band AEBS yet, I'm thinking I might be in the market for one. I just moved into a new apartment complex where the 2.4GHz frequency is saturated with over 30 wireless networks in range of my unit. I'm thinking that the 5GHz frequency would be much less crowded, and am thus considering getting a dual-band AEBS.
I have the following equipment on my home network:
1 Power Mac G5 (uses wired ethernet)
    2 MacBooks (use 802.11n)
    1 iPhone (uses 802.11g)
    1 PlayStation 3 (uses 802.11g)
My question is (and I keep finding conflicting information on this topic) will the iPhone and the PS3 slow down the MacBooks from 802.11n speed to 802.11g speed when they are connected to the dual-band AEBS? If so, can this be avoided by running 2 routers with two separate SSIDs (one in 802.11n only mode, and the other in 802.11g only mode)?
Sorry if this is a repeat question, but the fine print on Apple's product page says that the dual-band AEBS will be slowed down when a 802.11g device joins, but I have heard people say otherwise elsewhere.
    Thanks.

So with the new dual-band AEBS, it is possible to create two different SSIDs (one 5GHz 802.11n and one 2.4GHz 802.11g) and have those two networks seamlessly joined for file/printer sharing as well as both run at their maximum speeds.
To the best of my knowledge, being that I just got one a few days ago and haven't "experimented" fully yet, I believe the answer is yes to all counts. I'm sure if others have had the opportunity to check out all of the features that this new model has to offer, they will certainly chime in.

  • Apple AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n - MB321LL/A. How to set it up to my new iMac

    Community:
How do you set up an
Apple AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n - MB321LL/A how do you set up on Mac running on OS X 10.9.4?
    Please advise
    Fmsalazar

Apple did say it was important.
If the units do not show up in the airport utility then you must set it correctly to link-local.
Steps for OS X Lion or Mountain Lion
This can happen if IPv6 has been disabled. To enable IPv6 for your network interface:
Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, and then click Network.
If a lock icon appears in the lower-left corner, click it and enter your admin name and password to unlock the pane.
Click your network service (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) in the list, and then click Advanced.
    Click the TCP/IP tab.
Choose Link-local only from the Configure IPv6 pop-up menu.
    Click OK.
    Click Apply.
AirPort base station not seen or "An unexpected error occurred" appears in AirPort Utility 6.3
    Apple rep says the same.
Re: Unexpected error when connecting Airport Express A1264 to Airport Utility 6.3.1
I am searching as I saw it in a thread today where a person had issues. (No contribution from me in the thread but found that was the issue).
It is kind of a fail safe.. since auto can end up with any setting.. and it will depend on the setting of ipv6 in the Airport Router if it works properly in the computer.. setting it to the correct value is one step in sorting out problems when people get in a mess.

  • My wifi network is 802.11n but there are times changing for 802.11g, and have to restart ... after the update for Mountain Lion

My wifi network is 802.11n but there are times changing for 802.11g, and have to restart ... after the update for Mountain Lion...  Help!!!
Several problems with Mountain Lion, APP STORE (login/logout error), WIFI(802.11n for 802.11g), MAIL (horrible)... Apple, what is happening?

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • IOS6 and Appletv 5.1 wifi working as 802.11g instead 802.11n

Both upgrades are making my devices to operate as 802.11g instead 802.11n, at my home wifi connections.
The devices which I haven't updated are still working as 802.11n.
This could be another issue in the new upgrades. I hope that a possible iOS6.0.1 fix that up!
    Thanks everyone
    Chris

Is anyone having the same problem?

Hardmac.com has post a step-by-step guide on how to upgrading a MacBook Core Duo from 802.11g to 802.11n using an 802.11n card from the Mac Pro desktop. The upgrade was also tested and confirmed to work with the AirPort Extreme 802.11n at 802.11n speed.
There is no reason that a similar upgrade shouldn't also work with the MacBook Pro.

Interesting how the Apple 802.11n Enabler installed on the MacBook with no problems using the CD that comes with the AirPort Express.

  • Cisco Systems vs "CSIRO" 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent

    Hi,
any news about Cisco Systems and the "CSIRO" 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent ?
    http://www.buffalotech.com/products/wireless/
    Dear Customer
As you may be aware, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation ("CSIRO") sued Buffalo, Inc. and Buffalo Technology (USA), Inc. ("Buffalo"), for alleged infringement of United States Patent No. 5,487,069 ("the '069 patent"). Subsequently, CSIRO also asserted its patent against the entire wireless LAN industry, including, Microsoft, Intel, Accton, SMC and Netgear.
In it's lawsuit against Buffalo, CSIRO claimed certain Buffalo wireless networking products compliant with IEEE standards 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent. Buffalo believed at that time and continues to believe that there are no grounds for CSIRO's allegations of infringement. The United States district court, however, found Buffalo to infringe the '069 patent and enjoined the importation and sale of Buffalo's IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g compliant products.
CSIRO's lawsuits are against the entire wireless LAN industry and could affect the supply of wireless LAN products by any manufacturer, not just Buffalo. The entire industry is resisting CSIRO's attempts to enjoin the sale of wireless LAN products. Recently, Microsoft, 3COM Corporation, SMC Networks, Accton Technology Corporation, Intel, Atheros Communications, Belkin International, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Nortel Networks, Nvidia Corporation, Oracle Corporation, SAP AG, Yahoo, Nokia, and the Consumer Electronics Association filed briefs in support of Buffalo's position that injunctive relief is inappropriate in this case.
During the period of time that the injunction is in effect (10/1/2007), Buffalo cannot offer for sale, sell, import, or use its IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g compliant products in the United States. A list of the products covered by the injunction is attached here . The injunction does not prohibit sales of pre-existing inventories of products by Buffalo's customers. In addition, Buffalo has secured CSIRO's agreement to permit the replacement of defective products under warranty. None of Buffalo's other products are currently affected by this injunction.
While Buffalo believes that it will be successful in reversing the district court's decision and will obtain a stay of the injunction pending a decision on the merits, the Court of Appeals has not yet issued a decision. Should the Court of Appeals issue a decision staying the injunction, you will be promptly notified. After the stay is issued or a favorable decision on the merits is obtained, Buffalo will be able to resume the supply of IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g products
Please rest assured that Buffalo continues to stand behind their products and will continue to support all of our loyal customers as it relates to product warranties, technical support and the like without interruption.

I suspect after reading the patent and the litigation that you mentioned above, that the US District Court decision will be reversed as the patent appears to be very vague in its contsruction and verbage. Furthermore, the intent to hold the IEEE hostage on the ratification of 802.11n will not bode well in the court's eyes. If in fact the case is reversed, I believe that the members of CSIRO will be in danger of lost profits litigation from Buffalo. Stay tuned to this bat channel.

  • Airport express extending - n AND g

I have an airport express extending a dual band airport extreme network. The extreme has one band on n (for laptops) and one band on a/g (for iphones and an older laptop).  The airport express extends the network, connecting wirelessly to the extreme in another room, and sharing its connection with an iphone and an old laptop.
My question is this: will the airport express connect with the airport extreme (receiving its internet connection) at n speeds, but then connect with my iphone and old laptop (sharing its internet) at a/g speeds?  I know the express is not dual band and thus cannot share its connection on different bands, but can it connect on a different band than it shares?
    Thanks!

From what I've tried the Airport Express will only extend as it connects to. I've tried and it doesn't seem to "auto-convert" from one to another.
Also, you might want to look at the 802.11n 5ghz and 802.11n b/g/n 2.4ghz. Set this in your Airport Extreme accordingly (which you already might have), and let Airport Express automatically extend the 802.11n b/g/n 2.4ghz. This way, the iPhone will connect as fast as it can and the older laptop can connect.
BTW here is my "poor man's dual band" setup if anyone's interested:
DSL modem is connected to Netcomm 802.11b/g/n wireless router. This supplies the 802.11b/g/ 2.4ghz N signal for iPhone, Xbox360, and anything else.
Then, I connect via ethernet from Netcomm wireless router to my existing Airport Express. Airport Express supplies a pure 802.11 5ghz N signal for my Mac, iPad2, new iPad and AppleTV.
This way, the Mac, iPads and AppleTV always "see" only the Airport Express network, hence WiFi iTunes syncing as well as AirPlay streaming is great, and the 5ghz network with maximum N speed doesn't suffer interference and/or dropouts such as when my microwave is running.
As for the iPhone, I'll just use a cable when I need to, but this way my iPhone and Xbox360 can access the Internet as needed without degrading the connectivity of the Mac, iPads and AppleTV. I don't play online games, I only need connectivity to update or download stuff on Xbox360.
Yes, the disadvantage is double-NAT, but I haven't encountered issues yet.

  • Airport Express Base Station and AirTunes

I was given an Airport Express Base Station and I purchased
a PCMCIA wireless card (802.11g). After installation of both items I then upgraded the iTunes software to v4.9. I want to transmit music from my laptop to the Airport Express Base Station. I understand I require the AirTunes software butI cannot find a download site for that application. The CD that came with the Base Station does not have Airtunes (obviously an older version of the application software). Is AirTunes available as a download?
    Thanks

Airtunes support is built in to iTunes version 4.9 - there is no other software you need to download or install. If your PC has been successfully set up to connect to the Airport Express wireless network, a drop down box will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes application window where you can select the place your iTunes should be playing (ie internal speakers, or the Airport Express).
You did not mention either (a) configuring your Airport Express or (b) setting up your PC to connect to the Airport Express wireless network. To do this:
    (a) read the configuration manual for the Airport Express. Then download the Airport 4.2 update for Windows (from Apple's web site) - it provides the latest Windows versions of the Airport Express configuration software.
    (b) to get your PC to connect to the Airport Express wireless network, see the links to "accessing an airport network" provided at:

  • 802.11g versus 802.11b/g - Which Should I Use?"

Hi, quick question. What is the difference? Which setting should I use for my home network? Does it matter? I am using a Netgear router with 2 Macs and 2 PC's. Thanks
    d

But why is that? It's most annoying. Apple (and others) promote this wild and wonderful 802.11g and how much faster it is...Great! I'll go shell out another x-hundred dollars and upgrade, only to find out that where the old wireless b could get a solid and stable connection to my PB EVERWHERE in my home (and next door at the neighbours place) I can't even get a stable connection in my bedroom not even 20ft. away from the router. I'm thinking I should have stayed with wireless b in the first place. Or am I just way off base and just have a defective wireless g card in my PB?.
Sorry about the rant, but I had to vent.

I really don't have an answer for that one. I guess that while trying to get things working correctly, I would use the most basic monitor I had which in your case would be the Eizon using the Thunderbolt port and adaptor.
When you boot into Safe Mode the startup is quite slow, but you should get the Apple logo and then the spinning gear below it (release the SHIFT key when it appears.) Then after a little more time you should see a gray progress bar appear below the spinning gear. When that disappears the computer will startup to a login screen.

  • I have an AirPort Express, iPhone 5, and MacBook (late 2010). How do I see the graphical overview of my network?

I have an AirPort Express, iPhone 5, and MacBook (late 2010). How do I see the graphical overview of my network? (I can't seem to find a way to see it).
My computer is acting....well, strange.  I can't put my finger on it but it doesn't seem right.  Menus look skewed.  Some applications look like they're trying to disguise themselves as apple (no consistant window formats).  Airplay turns on and off on my devices on it's own.  And some locked system preference seem to unlock themselves, or won't even grey-out after I lock them.
I have changed my password many times but the issue keeps coming back.  I feel like I'm going crazy - but I know that something just isn't right...maybe someone's been hacking me? (I have no idea why...)
Anyway, maybe I could have stemmed from an improper setup of my wireless network.
    Any thoughts?
Also, right now, when I just signed into apple communities....
I have an iCloud email address that is accociated with my 1 and ONLY Apple ID...
It seems to have been working but...
When I loged in here it only saw my:
                                  OLD MacBookPro
                                  3 Old iPods
My new MacMini with OS X Sever (Server is currently turned off)
Could my Apple ID be confusing my MacBook (which I'm currently using) as an old iPod or my old MacBookPro?
I doesn't even see my iPad (1st generation), or my iPhone 5
Also, the Mac App store is giving me the option to download Mountain Lion??? I already have version 10.8.3...
Can anyone perform an analysis on my account and computer?  I have been to the Apple Store 6 seperate time and the problem was not resolved (after 6 COMPLETE hard drive wipes).
    PLEASE HELP!

i guess you could put the aiport utility app on your iphone, click on the aiport express there, it will show you how many devices are connected to it and the mac addresses of those devices.
