Airport Express 802.11n vs 802.11b

Just purchased Apple Express 1084 (802.11b) on ebay.  It seems to be working fine, green light comes on when connected to the Ethernet. But I wonder if I am struggling to get it connected due to the fact that I have Windows 7, and it requires 802.11n instead. Any thoughts?

The 1084 version of the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) supports both 802.11b & g on the 2.4 GHz radio band. The fact that you are running Windows 7 DOES NOT require it to connect to 802.11n wireless networks only.
Does your PC actually connect to the local wireless network? That is, can it "see" other network client but just cannot access the Internet?

Can I use an Airport Express to extend a Cisco E4200 802.11n or 802.11g wireless network?  I'd like to improve access in a dead spot with an airport express. I know I can connect this wayt for airplay, but how about extending the signal?
    Thx! ACB

Apple's "extend a wireless network" function appears to be a proprietary feature that works only with other Apple AirPort routers. As far as we know, this feature is not compatible with devices from other manufacturers.
It would be extremely unlikely that the Express could do what you want, but some things are never known until  you try.

Apple AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n - MB321LL/A how do you set up on Mac running on OS X 10.9.4?
    Please advise
    Fmsalazar

Apple did say it was important.
If the units do not show up in the airport utility then you must set it correctly to link-local.
Steps for OS X Lion or Mountain Lion
This can happen if IPv6 has been disabled. To enable IPv6 for your network interface:
Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, and then click Network.
If a lock icon appears in the lower-left corner, click it and enter your admin name and password to unlock the pane.
Click your network service (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) in the list, and then click Advanced.
    Click the TCP/IP tab.
Choose Link-local only from the Configure IPv6 pop-up menu.
    Click OK.
    Click Apply.
AirPort base station not seen or "An unexpected error occurred" appears in AirPort Utility 6.3
    Apple rep says the same.
Re: Unexpected error when connecting Airport Express A1264 to Airport Utility 6.3.1
I am searching as I saw it in a thread today where a person had issues. (No contribution from me in the thread but found that was the issue).
It is kind of a fail safe.. since auto can end up with any setting.. and it will depend on the setting of ipv6 in the Airport Router if it works properly in the computer.. setting it to the correct value is one step in sorting out problems when people get in a mess.

  • Airport Express 802.11n and 802.11g clients?

    Hi,
I hope this is the right place to ask this question.
    Setup:
    1. At this time I have a main AE 802.11g base for wireless surfing.
    2. I have a second AE 802.11g connected to the hi-fi system. This second AE station is connceted as a client into the wireless network of the main AE base.
Question: could I keep this setup after replacing 1. with an AE 802.11n base (and keep the AE 802.11g client for streaming)?
    Thanks you,
    Andre

I would still have one more question.
    Are theses assumptions correct?
    1. If the AE 802.11g client is switched off, the network will work at full speed (802.11n)
    2. Turning on the AE 802.11g client would slow down the network at 802.11g level
    3. switching the AE 802.11g client off again would lead to a recovery to full speed 802.11n
I am asking this because I do the music streaming only occasionally, must of the time I am using my MBP for work,
    Thank you,
    Andre

  • ¿Tengo wifi 802.11n o 802.11b?

    Gracias

I think I found my answer here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199
Apple is still beyond this tech!
Routers that support 802.11n should be configured for 802.11a/n mode for maximum speed and compatibility. Routers that only support 802.11a can be left in 802.11a mode. Different Wi-Fi routers support different radio modes, so the exact setting will vary depending on the Wi-Fi router in use. In general, enable support for all modes. Devices will then automatically select the fastest commonly supported mode to communicate. Note that choosing a subset of the available modes will prevent older devices from connecting (for example, 802.11a devices will be unable to connect to a Wi-Fi router in 802.11n-only mode). In addition, choosing a subset of the available modes may cause interference with nearby legacy networks, and may cause nearby legacy devices to interfere with your network.

  • 802.11n Router / 802.11b/g wireless card & speed

Will I see a significant increase in speed/performance if I upgrade just my router to 802.11n, or do I need to swap out all my cards/adapters as well?

It is better to swap the wireless cards/adapters to 802.11n along with the router if you are looking for better speed/performance.

  • Radio Mode "802.11n only", "802.11n (b/g compatible)" not available anymore

    Dear All,
Today I was checking my AE config (7.3.2) with Airport Utility 5.3.2 (532.8) and I realized that there are no 802.11n modes available anymore... Usually it had two options, "802.11n only" and "802.11n (b/g compatible)". I cannot find also the frequency option (2.4 or 5GHz), probably because this should be available only for n modes.
I would apreciate some help here

  • AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n and AirTunes Questions

My internet comes in to one room in my house. All that is in there is a cable modem and a Linksys wireless router. All computers in my house access the web wirelessly through this modem.
In another room I have an iMac, that is my main computer and has my music on it.
Across the room from that computer is my stereo. There is no ethernet connectivity near the stereo.
I want to play my iTunes through my stereo and use my iPhone as a remote, but I am happy with my current router.
    My questions are:
    1. Can I buy one AE Base w/iTunes and use it as a link between my iMac and my stereo without using it for Internet access?
    2. Do I have to buy two AE Bases and use one to replace my current router?
I live in a small town, no Apple store. I called Apple support yesterday but nobody I talked to seemed to be able to answer my questions.
Any light that anyone can shed on this for me would be much appreciated.
    Scott

you can use the express near the receiver and connected to it then if the range is acceptable have it join the linksys network. you can set it up no internet just stream music. it may give you some grief to set it up but with patience and logic its doable.

Hi , Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. It is a great site for information and questions. Thank you for the very detailed post on what you have done this far. Very helpful.  I have looked into your issue about your HP Spectre x360 13-4009na Notebook and the Wireless connection signal slowand dropping. I would change the Channel on the router. Routers are capable of communicating to your Notebook on several different channels and sometimes this helps. You could turn off IPv6 for the notebook. Some say this helps.  Fix this problem Microsoft Fix it 50413.   Here is a link to help as well. I hope something here helps. Please let me know how this goes. Thanks.

  • Airport Express 802.11n and high speeds *impossible*

    Hi there,
well I have been playing around for the last 24-48hrs with an AirportExpress 802.11n wiht the latest firmware on it, to achieve high speed wifi ~300mbps as 802.11n allows. The following hardware was used during this tests:

Enabling/ disabling wide channels doesnt change the avarage transfer rate significantly.
These are just a few examples of all tests I have done, I have tried every possible configuration and took screen shots of almost 80% of the test (if someone is interested in reviewing this).
I couldnt find a single configuration in infrastructure mode that is as fast as the ad-hoc connection, so I assume either apple's setup for ad hoc and using channels is different to infrastructure or the airport express simply is unable to perform the same way as the wifi cards being used inside my Macs (which is my conclusion unless someone proves me wrong).
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Keep in mind, my findings show a 100% faster network in Ad hoc mode on a 2.4 Ghz connection
This is quite unsatisfying as I have bought the airport express on Feb 9th 2010 and it was the latest available model according to local genius bar.
So to quote apple: "The AirPort Express Base Station is based on an IEEE 802.11n draft specification and is compatible with IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, and IEEE 802.11g." yes it might be compatible but doesnt allow you to fully operate at those specifications or has anyone been able to achieve this somehow?

why didnt I find this any earlier ...

  • Airport Express 802.11b under Mavericks?

How can I configure my airport Express 802.11b?
Used to be I had an old version of Airport Utility (5.6) I could run to configure the airport express I have attached to my stereo. Now under mavericks (10.9) I can't launch that app on my MB Pro.

There are a number of posts offering potential workarounds for this. However, it is important to understand that some of these are fairly technical and require using the Terminal to make changes ... however, I would caution that these are not approved by Apple and you may end up impairing you OS X Mavericks operating system.
The "safest" option is to use an earlier OS X equipped Mac or a Windows PC to administer the older 802.11b or 802.11g AirPorts OR upgrading your AirPort to either an 802.11n or 802.11ac model.

  • WDS networking issue - Airport Extreme (802.11n) and remote Airport Express

    *Background Info:*
    Airport Extreme 802.11n (Fast Ethernet)
    Version: 7.2.1
Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network (set as main)
    Network Name: @Home
    Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Channel: 1
    Airport Express
    Version: 6.3
Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network (set as remote)
    Network Name: @Home
    Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Channel: 1
    Radio Mode: 802.11b/g compatible
    Connect Using: AirPort (WDS)
    Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
    Issue
Please help as I'm having issues with my WDS network. I've setup using both the wizard and manual and also hard reset on both units to setup again but cannot get them both to communicate to one another. Both units are showing green LED under their configuration. For my last attempt, I've tried adding the Airport ID (MAC) of the Airport Express to the Access Control and also DHCP Reservations on the Airport Extreme but still no luck.
The Airport Express (setup as remote) does not even show up in the Airport Extreme's Summary as Wireless Clients. In the WDS tab, the Airport Extreme is set up as WDS main, Allow wireless clients box checked and WDS Remotes has the Airport Express' AirPort ID in the list. On the Airport Express, WDS is set up as remote, with Allow wireless client box checked and the Airport ID of the Airport Express in the WDS Main.
I can connect clients to both units. Both units are configured using the same Network Name and have the same WPA/WPA2 security key. The Airport Extreme (main) however is connected to my broadband so any devices or clients connected to it are able to get outside. Connected devices or clients are assigned IP address via DHCP with IP 10.0.x.x. If wifi devices or clients connect to the Airport Express (remote) they are assigned a completely different IP addresses 169.254.x.x, they are not able to browse the internet or talk to other clients connected on the 10.0.1.x network. The Internet Connection configuration on the Airport Express (remote) is Connect Using Airport (WDS) and Using DHCP. I've even tried manually and entered the IP address 10.0.1.199 that I had assigned to the Airport Express from the Airport Extreme and Router Address as IP of Airport Extreme (10.0.1.1).
I think I've tried everything but I'm still having this problem. The remote Airport Express is not extending my existing Airport Extreme network. Any ideas???

    Christopher,
This may or may not be helpful, or it may be something you've already tried or are aware of so I apologize if that's the case.
I have been researching ways to set up the Dual Band Network supported by the AEBS and came across your post. I've got an AEBS and (2) AirPort Express set-up currently (AEBS is main and the Express are participating in the WDS as remotes) and I'm trying to configure one of the Express to utilize a 802.11b/g compatible network while the AEBS runs a 5Ghz 802.11n Only network.
AAR, since the AirPort Express are 2.4Ghz 802.11b/g ONLY (no support for 802.11n), you have to be sure to set-up your AEBS first and select "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" in the Radio Mode drop-down on the AEBS before you attempt to connect an AirPort Express. The AEBS should be set-up as your "WDS main" and the Express should be set-up as a "WDS remote" for the network you established when you set-up the AEBS.
Bottom line here is the Express won't be seen by the AEBS unless the AEBS is 'looking' in the 802.11b/g 2.4Ghz frequency.
    Hope this was helpful.

  • AEBS (802.11n model) and Airport Express both disappeared

My Airport Extreme network worked properly yesterday. My Airport Extreme Base Station (new 802.11n model) is connected to a Motorola Canopy terrestrial antenna dish (via the WAN port) which is the DHCP server. It is also connected to my printers and wired computers via one of the LAN ports and an 8-port Ethernet Switch. The Airport Express is being used to connect my home entertainment receiver; I just added the Airport Express into the network yesterday and it worked great with both iTunes and Airfoil yesterday.
Today the green light was still on on the Airport Express, but iTunes could not find it. I tried to use AirPort Utility, but it says "AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort base stations." AirPort Utility can't even find the main base station even though I am wirelessly connected to the internet right now through it! The light on the Airport Express is now flashing yellow (it is not working at all other than flashing its light)
I am running the AirPort Utility from a 12" PowerBook G4. All of my Macs are PowerPC at present, so I am not yet utilizing the 802.11n (just 802.11g and wired Ethernet).
I guess I will need to setup the AirPorts again. How can I get the settings to stick so that I won't have to reset them on a daily basis? I am not sure what went wrong here.

I had the same issue as a lot of you with my Airport Expresses.
When you first set up your Airport Express did you use the new Airport Utility that comes with the 802.11n Base Station or did you use the Old Utility?
What I ended up doing was resetting my Airport Express to the Factory Defaults, then using my Airport Connection (top Right corner) choose the Airport Express from there, it's going to be a Apple SSID/Network name, and then resetup the Airport Express with the NEW Airport Utility.
Haven't had an issue with any of my connections. I have 2 Airport Express, one as a client and one as a WDS Remote Station.
I also live in a apartment, and my Macbook picks up 12 different Access Points. But haven't had any problems with drop offs or disconnects after reseting my Expresses and resetting them up with the Airport Utility that comes with the 802.11n Extreme.
    Hope that helps,
    AL
