Airport Express A1088 Not Working With iTunes 10 AirPlay but works with iPad & iPhone

I'm really hoping someone can help me. I have just got an ADSL connection at home and have started using my Airport Express I've had for years but haven't used, model number A1088. I can use the Airport Express to use AirPlay from my iPhone, iPod and iPad. iTunes 10 on my 2010 13" MacBook Pro recognises the Airport Express as an AirPlay device, however when I attempt to play music through remote speakers using the Airport Express as the AirPlay device I receive the error message "An error occurred while connecting to AirPlay device "emptyk86 Airport Express". The network connection failed". I have performed numerous hard resets and resets within the Airport Utility, to no avail. I could accept that as the Aiport Express is quite old now, that it could be broken, but as it works for all iPhones, iPods, and iPads I don't understand what I'm doing wrong!

The same thing started happening to me this morning. I have an old Airport Express, New MacBook Pro, recently updated to Lion, have the latest version of iTunes. Everything worked fine until this morning. I was playing music, stopped it, and when I tried to resume, got the error message. I turned evertying off and on and reset everything. The problem persisted. However, I had no problem playng music from my iPad library through the system using the iPad.
I have a remote app on the iPad and, oddly enough, found that I could play anything (playlists, songs, etc.) from the MacBook Pro iTunes library through the system using the iPad remorte app. Once I had that running, I went back to the MacBook Pro and found I had full functionality with iTunes on the MacBook Pro. I closed and reopened iTunes a couple of times on the MacBook Pro to test it, and found that sometimes it would work fine and sometimes I would get the error message. When I got the error message, I went through the procedure with the iPad to get it going, and that worked most of the time. When it did not work the first time, I found that playing a song from the iPad library first and then going to the remote app seemed to help.
For sure, this is more a workaround than a solution, but maybe someone who understands how these things work might recognize the problem and propose a solution.

Airport Express speakers not showing in itunes

Hi,
I had my Airport express working nicely, but then (foolishly), played around with it a bit and I'm now in a world of pain. I have a G5 imac talking to an AE base station hooked to a DSL router and my stereo.
What's not working:
1. The remote speakers don't appear in itunes.
2. The setup assistant & admin utility can't automatically detect the base station, either through the assistant or by the admin utility. (not sure if this is related or not).
What is working:
- I can change the settings by manually selecting the ip address of the base station and logging in.
- I can connect to the wireless network, and I can access the internet through the base station.
I've tried factory reset (both holding reset for 10 seconds & holding reset for 10 seconds while plugging the AE into power).
I've tried the base station with 6.2 and 6.1.1. I'm using v 4.2 of the airport admin software. I'm using v4.9 of iTtunes.
I've configured the base station to "Enable airtunes on this base station". I've configured iTunes to "look for remote speakers with Airtunes".
I'm just about at my wit's end. Any ideas?

It's working again. Honestly, I'm not sure what did it but here's what I have as a setup now.
I bought a Linksys Wireless router and changed the AE from router to a client.
I installed today's Security Update.
I deleted iTunes and reinstalled v4.9. I fiddled around a lot with turning on/off the iBook firewall as well as enabling the router's firewall.
I also added the iTunes ports (3689 tcp and 5353 udp) to the port triggering tab of the router. I restarted iTunes after all this and my remote speakers suddenly showed up.
Oddly, is that I removed all the settings that I had turned on (ports, firewalls on iBook, etc) and it's still working. I don't know what happened or what triggered it to start working but i think it has something to do with the ports. Who knows. Sorry that I don't have a more definitive solution for others who experience this.

Airport Express 'names' not updating in Itunes 'speakers'

purchased a few airport expresses -
Named them - Renamed them
BUT itunes is NOT picking up the renames -
any clues on how I 'refresh' the speaker list names in itunes?

It has a separate name for the AirPort itself and the "iTunes Speaker Name." Use the AirPort Utility and click "Manual Setup" for the AirPort Express, then click the Music icon in the toolbar at the top. From there you can change the name it shows in iTunes.

"Airport Express" is not compatible with this version of itunes

Hello- My itunes reports that my airport express is not compatible with this version of itunes. My ipod and iphone no longer sync with the device either. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Please locate the model number of the AirPort Express and post back that information.
The model number is located on the side of the AirPort Express. It begins with an "A" followed by four numbers.
We are not sure what you mean by "does not work". Does this mean that the AirPort Express worked at one time and has just recently stopped working?
Have you installed a newer operating system on your iOS device recently?
Or, is this a new AirPort Express that you are trying to configure for the first time?
If yes, what service will the AirPort Express perform on your network?

Need Help...my wireless airport express will not work with my update of snow leopard

after installing snow leopard on my macbook pro my airport express will not work...or will connect only for a minute at a time.

If you mean by "airport express" the square airport router you plug in and has a usb port then run the Airport Utility located in your Utilities folder to set it up again. If AU doesn't see it you may need to do a re-set of the AE.

Airport Express A1088 with MacOS X 10.8.2

i just got a Apple Airport Express A1088 and im trying to connect my mac to configure it for Wi-Fi extension, and Airplay,
but i can't connect to it.
The LED on the modem is blinking orange.
Im using my new Macbook air, so i don't have an Ethernet-Lan connection.
I installed the Airport ultilitys 5.6 (not 5.6.1) but it doesn't worked.
Could anyone help me?

The link for the windows software posted by tzbikowski will only run on Windows 7.
Since you mentioned that you were using Windows XP, you may have better results using software for XP.
AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows
This version requires XP Service Pack 3, (SP3.
If you do not have SP3 installed, but do have SP2 installed, you will need to use this version:
AirPort Utility 5.4.2 for Windows

My airport express is not connecting with my airport extreme base station. They are probably six years old. My IP address on my express shows 0.0.0.0

My Airport extreme and my airport express are not connecting together. I get an error message saying that my airport express software is not compatible with my Airport extreme and I have use them together for the past five or six years. It says I may need to change my IP address on my computer or something like that but I don't know what to do. the IP address on my express shows 0.0.0.0. Should everything be on the same IP address? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Please refer to the information already posted above:
If you see A1084 or A1088 there, your older Express is not supported by the newer version of AirPort Utility that you have.
If you have another Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard, or a PC, then you could use that computer to administer the older Express and it will work on the network along with the AirPort Extreme.
If the Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard or PC does not "see" the A1084 Express, you will need to "hard reset" the Express by holding in the reset button for 10 seconds and waiting a full minute for the Express to restart. Then, reconfigure the Express again.

HT201335 I want to watch an iTunes rental video on my MacBook Pro but stream the sound to my Airport Express linked speakers. However re Airplay icon doesn't show up in iTunes when playing the rental video. Is there a way around that?

With or without an Apple TV you can't send video to one device and audio to another using AirPlay.

Help Needed: Airport Express does not work

My Airport Express was ok until one day I setup it under bridge mode in a hotel room. Now neither my iMac and Dell laptop can update the settings in the Airport Express. It always shows error in reading the settings.
I have tried soft, hard reset and also tried to bring it back to factory settings. However, all these trials were not successful. It did not even blink with green light when I tried to reset it to factory settings (hold the reset pin, plug in power socket and then release the pin... I believe I did it right).
Also the network name I created in this Airport Express did not change to default name. The Airport Express name was restored to default though.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Do I have to send the hardware to Apple to fix it or it is just a software failure that I can fix at home with you guys help?

Same problem here -- followed instructions to do factory reset to a "T", never saw blinking green LED. Instead led blinks yellow. Always get an error in Airport Utility.
Apple had best quit poking fun at how lousy Microsoft stuff is before someone sees the large number of product complaints logged in the forums. It isn't smart to toss stones in a glass house.

4g iPod works w/iTunes 5, but not with iTunes 2

I have two G4s, one with OSX.2.8 and iTunes 5, the other has OS9.0.4 and iTunes 2.0.4. My iPod will mount and work with the G4 with iTunes 5, but I haven't been able to get it to mount on the G4 with iTunes 2. I've used the same firewire cable for both machines, and the firewire ports seem to be working on the G4 w/iTunes 2. My iPod software is up to date. I tried resetting the firewire ports, but the iPod still doesn't show up. Is iTunes 2.0.4 too outdated to work with an updated 4G iPod? Any ideas?

I imagine that's the problem as well. What's the latest version of iTunes that is compatible with OS9? Is iTunes 2.0.4 it? My kids have a bunch of older games that they play on OS9 because the games freeze on OSX's classic environment, so I'm hesitant to move them over to X, but I bought my daughter an iPod mini for Christmas, and I want her to have her own iTunes library.

Airport Express will not talk to my router

I have 2 airport express stations that are 6.3 and they have always been able to connect to my qwest wireless router no prob. I've recently updated to Leopard and was surprised to see the new airport utility instead of the airport admin and airport setup tools. I like the new utility and interface as it seems less confusing than the old but now I'm having issues.
1. I can get the new utility to recognize my airport express ONLY when I do a hard reset to the airport express.
2. As I've done many times in the past, I go through the following setup protocol to join my current wireless network. I simply want to join my current network so I can talk to my stereo and printer wirelessly.
3. When I finish the setup and hit update, the airport utility updates the express successfully and then attempts to restart the express in order to join my network. This is where the problem lies.
*Here's the error message I get:*
AirPort Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after restarting.
The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again.
Now, I've tried repeating this process 10 times with both airport express stations and the same result happens? Remember, the only way for the utility to find the express is to hard reset the express. What gives? I bought both of these express stations over a year ago and they've been working fine til now. Because they are older and updated to 6.3, I shouldn't update them to the 802.11n7.3.1 update or should I? Is there something different about this new airport utility in Leopard that is causing the problem?
Like I said, I've done this exact same thing many times and its pretty straight forward but I'm stumped.

I've got the solution! It took me some fair hours, though...
It seems the Airport Express can not handle the WEP-encryption properly, nor the 64 or the 128 bit versions. Here's how to work around it:
1) change your routers encryption to WPA2 with passkey (WPA-2-PSK). You may use the 10-digit code supplied with most routers or any of your own choice.
2) Change all wireless cards in your network to WPA2-PSK. It can take some time to figure it all out, but in the end you'll fix it. I had to download a new driver for my D-Link card DWL-G650 for instance.
3) Do the usual config thing with the Airport Express. Choose to connect to an existing network, apply the 10-digit passkey (be sure to choose the WPA2-PSK-option in the drop down-menu).
4) Off you go! Itunes will find the remote speakers, green lights all over and everybody turns happy...

Airport Express suddenly not extending

First, some technical info.
I am using a late model Airport Extreme with an early model Airport Express to extend my network. All has been working fine until recently. The Airport Express blinks amber and the utility says the connection is good but that the Base Station was unable to extend the network. I have not many any changes to either my Airport Extreme or the Airport Express. Have unplugged the Express and plugged it back in, but get the same result. What would cause it to suddenly drop off the network? Thoughts?

Symptom: Suddenly AirPort Express blinks and AirPort Utility says AirPort Express seems to have problem extending the network
Solution: Google "airport express not extending" and click link to "Airport Express suddenly not extending"
Problem solved in seconds!
PS: I wasted 5 minutes earlier when I pressed the reset button in my AirPort Express hardware and had to reconnect it to my internet connection as the extending network although the setup was very intuitively easy ( a very intelligent setup sequence all figured out by Apple ) ... then I read this !

How do I set up my Airport Express and not interrupt my TIme Capsule

I have ATT UVerse recently installed and have my Time Capsule Router Behind their installed router. I recently purchased Airport Extreme and want to install it as well so I can connect an older Version of a Sony PS3 which doesn't have bluetooth capability via rj45 since the time capsule is no where close to my PS3. Is there a way to install this Airport Express and not mess up the settings of the Time Capsule?

Yes. You will want to configure the new 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) as a ProxySTA. In this configuration, the AXn will join the wireless network created by the Time Capsule and share Internet access through its Ethernet port to the PS3.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. The feature should work with any wireless network: a, b, g, or n; and 5GHz or 2.4GHz. (Note that the Express, which ships with firmware 7.3, must also be updated to firmware 7.3.1 for this feature to appear.)
