Airport Express & Airport Extreme (both "n") very weak signal

I know there are a few postings on here but can't find the answer.
I have just bought an airport extreme and an airport express, crucially both are "n".
Both devices have been successfully installed and I have green lights on both.
I have the setting to extend the range.
I am trying to reach a family room with an iPad and despite being 1 foot away from the airport express with it's green light on I have no signal, it improves as I get closer to the extreme but it's as if the airport express is not doing anything at all. The express joined the existing network of the extreme.
How can this be? Nearly £250 spent on wireless gear today and none the better,
Thanks.

I have a similar issue. My airport express used to work fine but a few days ago the signal stopped being functional. The green light is on the airport express but the signal is now not strong enough for me to be able to use my equipment. It is set up to be extended my existing network.

I assume that you mean that you want to extend the range using wireless only.
This Apple Support Document will tell you exactly how to do that:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
The instructions assume that you have AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion , so if you have not already done so, you will need to download and install this application to track the instructions in the support document.

  • My 4-year old AirPort Extreme intermittently drops out (no signal to my iMac Book).  The laptop shows reception of other nearby Wi-Fi transmitters, but not mine.  I have changed the bands, but the problem comes back.  Transmitter problem or interference?

My 4-year old AirPort Extreme intermittently drops out (no signal to my iMac Book).  My hard-wired iMac still has internet capability.  The laptop shows reception of other nearby Wi-Fi transmitters, but not mine.  I have changed the bands back and forth, but the problem comes back.  How can I check if it is a transmitter problem or interference?

Let me see if I can suggest a strategy.
I have talked with my ISP and he said that I am not the only one with an Airport Extreme with the same issue. He said to try to write the DNS direclty, rather than using the Auto settings - still nothing works.
What modem do you have and what sort of broadband?
What mode is the AE in.. router or bridge?
I have an Airport Express from 2010. Since about a month and definetly since yesterday, I cannot connect any device via Wifi to it although LAN connection works correctly.
Is this express or extreme.. the rest of the post you refer to extreme.
What is the actual model number of the AE? A1xxx from the base or the part number MCxxx from the box.
If the AE is bridge.. I want you to try a different method.. put it in router mode.. don't worry about double NAT but ensure the IP range of the modem /router is different to the AE.. so if one is 192.168.x.x then the AE on default at 10.x.x.x is fine.. if the main router is 10.x then move the AE to 192.168.x.x
Make sure the guest wireless is off.
Using a 5.6 utility on your 10.6.8 OS mini go to the log and see if the wireless is registering..
You should see lists of wireless connection like..
Post as many screenshots of the setup as you can.. it helps loads.
IPv6 is starting to become a pain.. try it off and try local link and try auto.. in the computer.

  • Can AirPort Extreme be used as a signal extender?

Can AirPort Extreme be used as a wireless extender, wi fi booster?

If you are planning to "extend" wirelessly......the AirPort Extreme will "extend" the wireless signal from another Apple wireless router....but....it will not "extend" the wireless signal from a 3rd party router.

I bought my iPhone 4 open line in Vancouver, Canada last week for use here in my home base in Bangkok, Thailand.  But when I tried using my Thai sim, I get a very weak signal, if not a weak signal, then a no service status.  I also have very weak wifi reception.  What do I do?
    I already tried the following:
    a. Turned the phone off and then on.
    b. Checked all wifi connections – no problem given that all our laptops and desktops can connect seamlessly.
    c. I tried restoring the phone to original factory settings via itunes
    d. Tried resetting the phone.
    e.     Tried different microsims from all networks
    f. However, all methods failed given that the network reception is very weak and often reflects – “no service”.  And with regards to the wifi reception It has difficulty in reading even the signal right in front of the wifi router.
I went to two Apple resellers here in Bangkok and requested that they please look at my Iphone and have it serviced.  I was frustrated when they said that given that I bought my phone in Canada, they are not able to support me and should instead try to contact the Apple store in Canada.
I went to apple.ca website and went to the expresslane support and I was said to register and callback.  Tried calling the 1800 number but given that I was in Thailand I had difficulty getting a connection.

  • Airport Express and Extreme both having timeout issues once every few days.

I have both an Airport Express and an Airport Extreme in the house (one on each side of the house), and for the last few months, we have been experiencing timeout issues with both. About once every few days, my computer (or any other computer here - all Macs) will lose connection to the hub. When I try to reconnect in the Wifi menu, it says "Connection timed out". Also, on my iPhone, when I try to connect, it says "Unable to connect".
All this takes is a quick restart of the Airport (just pull the power out and plug in), but this is VERY frustrating. I've updated to the latest firmware... I'm not sure what else to do.
    Any ideas?

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. I suggest starting by reviewing the following AirPort User Tip around the details for best base station placement. Let's see if this will help increase the bandwidth performance of your extended network. Most likely, due to combination of distance and Wi-Fi interference, you may not be getting the best bandwidth possible. Please post back your results.

  • Airport Express has very weak signal even to the next room

I am wondering why my airport express has a weak signal. The signal to the next room(about 4 or 5 meters away), is so weak that you can only see one or 2 lines from the graphic at the internet connect. My base station has the last firmware from apple. Has anybody else experiencing this problem or knows what could be wrong?
    Mac mini G4 1.25, iMac G5 2.0, MacBook 2.0, iPod 20Gb, iPod nano 4Gb, iPod 30Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have tried changing channels, I have tried using interference robustness but nothing seems to work. Isn't it so wierd thought that in the same room within 1 meter distance, the signal becomes from strong to weak, to zero?? The funny part also is that when i change channel for a few seconds the signal is very strong until it drops to zero. When i try another wireless device doesn't seem to have this problem but only with airport express base.

  • Airport extreme with comcast, very slow wireless connection

well i am creating this new thread becuase after searching this board and trying others' suggestions all day nothing is seeming to improve my wireless speed.
i have used the extreme base station with other internet providers and the wireless speed was amazing. however, i have just moved and we got the comcast 3-1 deal, so we get internet, cable, and telephone all over the same line. we have 6mb/sec and i did a line test and the speed from comcast was fine. so i think that it must be a setting on the base station.
i have done a recycle of the power on the network wating about 30-45 minutes inbetween each power on (multiple times). modem, base station, computer. and still there is no improvement.
i have done hard resests of both the modem and the base station, and still no improvement. i have also done soft resests of both.
furthermore, i have taken the network security off and that did not improve the speed either.
but...when i connect to the internet using the lan port of the base station the internet flys.
what am i doing wrong??? any help would be greatlty appreciated.
the comcast modem is an Arris telephony modem, i am using a mac book circa oct. 2006, with the airport extreme base station.

Hello eisnachm. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The only thing that you didn't mention doing was checking for Wi-Fi interference.
It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like KisMAC, MacStumbler, iStumbler, or IPNetMonitorX to determine potential areas of interference...and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them.

  • Airport Extreme dropping Internet Despite Strong Signal - Mavericks?

Hi - I've searched in the threads several times but haven't yet been able to find a resolution for this.
The past week or so, my Wifi keeps going out at random intervals. I can restart my router and it will come back up, but eventually it will drop again. Thought it was my internet service OR my router, but everything works super fast and steady if I'm connected directly. I really think it's the connection to my 2 year old Airport Extreme that is causing issues.
The wifi drops (all sites get stuck and say "Resolving Host" before getting a no connection error), but the Airport Extreme light stays green and my WIFI signal shows on my devices with full strength even though it's not working. Again - no problems if I'm connected directly to the internet.
I thought it was a similar problem to this thread, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2508959?start=120&tstart=0, however I followed those steps (enable IPv6) and the issue is still occuring. My Airport Extreme is running v 7.6.4.
I upgraded about a week ago to Maveicks and wondered if that might have something to do with it? Or if anyone has any other ideas? Any help at all is appreciated - it's been maddening rebooting my modem multiple times a day.

Let me see if I can suggest a strategy.

  • Airport extreme won't see wireless signal

    Hiya
I have an early 2005 mac mini. i had an airport extreme card installed a few months ago and have been able to log onto wireless internet no problems.
i have now moved house and can not connect to the new wireless network. My mac book pro can find my "beboX" signal no problems, although it does seem slower than my housemates connection on PC. The mac mini can sometimesfind the bebox but is unable to connect to it.
my feeling is that there is a problem with my mac mini's airport... i have downloaded the latest airport software and am wondering if i need to upload latest firmware...HOWEVER can not find latest firmware for 2005 mac mini on the apple website.
Please please please can someone help. i need to get my little mini online and have no idea why it won't. perhaps because there are several people using our wireless connection and and the mac mini is the slowest so canb't get on...?
    charlotte

Probaly the computer is to far away,to many obsticalls,or set up rong. from what you said it sounds like it is not set up corectly. go to systemprefrences/network. on the drop down menu for "Show" go to network port configurations. there it will show ways to conect to the internet. un check the ones you are not going to use. the one you are using is airport so drag it to the top of the list. this is how it is on os x 10.4. depending on how many computers are conected the router may not suport that many computers. for the firmware run sowftware up date under the apple at the top of the screen.

  • Does AirPort Extreme give off a wifi signal?

I was going to buy AirPort Extreme and it says you connect it with wifi and stuff, does this mean that it gives off wifi and can replace a broadband router?

does this mean that it gives off wifi and can replace a broadband router?
Yes, but only if you have a separate modem.....since the AirPort Extreme does not have a modem on board.
If your existing broadband router is a modem/router, then you will need to continue to use this device if you add the AirPort Extreme.

  • Very weak signal

    Hello
I have just moved, and in last home the airport express sent a strong signal to my iBook and my G5.
Now that I have moved (and I added the connection to my speakers) the signal is very weak (but working) on my G5 but full signal on the iBook.
I checked Airport Admin and increased robustness also I don't think it's other items that may cause interference.
The Express is now on the same shelf as my TV, DVD, stereo, but I don't think that should matter should it?
    Please help

  • Very weak signal on A1354

I have the A1034 (the one that looks like a spaceship). I updated to the newest airport extreme A1354 because it's supposed to be faster. My problem is the new airport does not have the range as the old one. My old airport signal reach the other rooms with a good signal. The new one will not reach the other rooms. It has a 25 foot radius.Very short range. Do I have a bad airport or did they lower the quality? Or am I setting it up wrong.

I set the 5 GHz network up with a password and then I set the 2.4 GHz as a guest network on the new airport with no password.
Just to make sure I understand, did you enable the Guest Network feature of your new AEBSn? If so, even though you can give it a different Network Name or use a different wireless encryption type, the Guest Network actually operates on both radio bands, not just the 2.4 GHz one.
If you did enable the Guest Network feature, I would recommend that you disable it, and instead, use the AirPort Utility to configure the 5 GHz radio to use a different Network Name from that used by the 2.4 GHz radio. The reason I would like for you to try this is to see if your Mac can access either network from the desired location. Again, I suspect that you will have better luck with the 2.4 GHz radio.
We can then try using different radio channels on either radio to find one that provides the best connectivity. By default, your AEBSn will have both radios using "Automatic" for the channel choices.

  • Express and extreme both "n" with static vs dhcp reservations.

Good day, and thanks for reading.
I have an express that I have configured to "extend my wireless network" with my extreme. This is all setup manually, with no internet connection needed. everything is static and I am just using the wireless and switch of the routers.
I have 4 electronic components that have static IP addresses _and_ I have added the mac addresses to the DHCP reservation list as well.
I would prefer to leave everything with just the manual addresses in mac access control, however- the apple log does not show the connections for these components with static addresses. However, they do show up on the log as connected in the DHCP client log when I am using DHCP only.
    My questions are;
    1. Does it hurt performance on the routers to have the mac addresses filled in on both the DHCP reservation list, and the mac address control list?
    2. Do I need to have all the mac addresses for my connected components on both the extreme and the express or, can I just have them inserted on the extreme- and are there any conflicts that can arise with having them coded on both routers?
I just want to be able to see the connections on the log, and currently it will only show them if I am using DHCP.
    Thanks you.

Hello chrisinoswego. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    1. Does it hurt performance on the routers to have the mac addresses filled in on both the DHCP reservation list, and the mac address control list?
    No.
    2. Do I need to have all the mac addresses for my connected components on both the extreme and the express or, can I just have them inserted on the extreme- and are there any conflicts that can arise with having them coded on both routers?
When employing MAC Access Control, the MAC addresses would need to be entered in each base station. The only conflict that I am aware of is when the (in this case) two MAC lists are not identical.

  • Comcast with Blast, Docsis 3.0 and Airport Extreme Setup w/ a fadding signal

I hope everyone is well on the board.
I just rencently got upgraded to the Docsis 3.0 telephony modem from Comcast, where I should be getting 50mb to 60mb down.
I am trying to have the setup of the AE's ( I have 2 dual bands ), and a Timemachine which I am using as my network.  I have one AE at the modem and its in Bridge Mode and the other two devices are extending the network.  The two AE's are on the same level (basement) and one is in one cornor of the house and the other is at the opposite side and the TM is one the third floor.
I want to broadcast in N to take advantage of the speed and I am having an issue getting the signal through to the end of a large concrete patio with plenty of rebar consistently.  Its odd, the wifi siganl is up and down all the time, I am wondering is there a channel that I should be on that would be better or I am going to
have to purchase another AE to ensure the strength is constent.
    Recap:
1 AE in bridge mode conected to a comcast telephony Docsis 3.0 and one TM and one AE extending the network
2 AE's on the basement level and the TM is on the third
large concrete patio a little higher than the basement level
Fadding signal to the end of the patio
Thank you for your time and helping me with my 1st world problems.

    Hi Sr.Yason,
Thanks for the thorough description of your setup.  I do have an article that provides information on interference and may have some information that helps you improve the signal to the end of the balcony:
