Airport Express and a Clearwire wireless modem...

So, I just got a wireless modem from Clearwire, and it was kind of cool in a plug and play sense and much faster than my DSL modem... I had planned on setting up a wireless network with my downstairs neighbor via my second Airport Express (first one is on my stereo amp and works great) but I'm not sure where to go at this point, the Clearwire modem only has an ethernet out and nothing else. Airport Express has only 1 ethernet port (in? out? I'm used to MIDI). Would connecting the modem ethernet to the Express ethernet, then the Express USB to my G4 allow me to set up a combo connection? And if so, how would I set it up? Any help would be so much appreciated. Thanks, Hmelf1

Would connecting the modem ethernet to the Express ethernet, then the Express USB to my G4 allow me to set up a combo connection?
No. The USB port on the AirPort Express (AX) is only for printing. It does not provide any network connectivity.
If you must connect your G4 via Ethernet, you must get an inexpensive router (not switch nor hub) and place it between the modem and AX. The AX and G4 would each plug into LAN ports of the router.

I play music on my hi fi via an airport express attached to my iMac.
Since installing maverick the sound quality is terrible and I get frequent distortion, which never happened before.
I have reset the airport express and reconfigure my wireless settings. I have also used Ethernet on its own but still get the same sound problems.
I would love to turn itunes sound off as you used to be able to do, but this I believe can't be done.
Has anyone else been having the same types of problem, and better still has anyone got the answer?

When the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is connected by Ethernet, you will find an option in the AirPort Utility, labeled: Enable AirTunes over Ethernet on the Music pane. Just select this option to allow streaming iTunes via the AirPort's Ethernet port. You should also be able to disable the AX's wireless so that it shouldn't interfere with the nearby TC.

  • Airport Express and a Netgear Wireless network

    Hi,
I am thinking of getting an Airport Express to be able to stream iTunes to my HiFi.
However I have an existing wirless network provided by a Netgear Wireless router / ASDL modem. I would like to keep the netgear as it provides my internet access.
Can an Airport Express live happily alongside the existing wireless network? Or would it create its own wireless network. Meaning my imac would either have to be on the internet (via the netgear) or the Airport Express network?
If it's a problem, does anyone have any alternative solutions?

I use a three+ year old Netgear DG834G as my wireless router and an Airport Express to stream to my hi-fi with no problems at all (apart from drop-outs when I use my microwave oven at the same time). Use the Airport setup app to configure the Express to 'join an existing wireless network' as a wireless client. It took five minutes. I've never had to reset it, either.

  • Apple Airport Express and PC Laptops - Wireless Network Help

    Hello all,
I have two Wi-Fi enabled laptops running Windows XP, an Apple Airport Express unit and a Netgear DG-632 Modem/Router.
At present the DG-632 is running in modem mode and is connected to one laptop using the ethernet connection. The Netgear DG-632 Modem/Router has one ethernet connection and one USB connection.
My understanding is that if i run one laptop off the USB connection on the Modem/Router and connect the the DG-632 to the ethernet connection then the laptop on USB has to be turned on for the second laptop to access the wireless network.
Assuming the above is true (i am very likely wrong), it would be nice if both laptops were able to access the internet wirelessly via the Airpot Express Unit.
However, being a complete novice at networking, i am little confused about how to do this?
Any help, tutorials or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm new. I have a Dell Laptop XP and my wife has a
dell desktop XP . I have DSL with a Linksys wireless
router. After many hours on the phone I was able to
get the ineternet set up for me and my wife.
After all this I found that my Airport Express system
couldn't connect to my stereo. It seems that the
router wireless connection pays no attention to
Airport. Apple says that they could set up another
wireless system to work for Itunes by using my
    wireless card in the Laptop.
But... I can't listen to the music and surf the net
at the same time. A linksys person has tried to allow
Linksys to accept and proper installation to the
router. I tried is but it didn't work.

Sort of new here and to the AE, but have a Dell Desktop and Tosbiba laptop both running XPHome SP2, and on dialup
The Linksys router is hooked to the desktop with an ethernet cable. In the office.
The AE is in the living room and works great for surfing and ITunes.
The only way I could get my AE to work as an access point for dialup and stream ITunes from the laptop to the home theater was to use the setup found here.

The only problem I had with the setup was do not use the $ when entering the password. And had to use a proxy server on the desktop for sharing the dialup. LOL no hope of any broadband here.
    Hope this is some help.

  • AirPort express and my Bell 2Wire modem?

I have been using the Bell 2Wire modem 2701 HG-G for many years now wirelessly with our MacBook Pro.  Never really encountered any connection issues.  My iPad uses WiFi and depending on where i am in the house will frequently have a poor connection or drop it all together.  I am wondering what my options are to rectify this. These are my thoughts:
    1. I remember a few years back someone at the Apple store saying that this modem was not the best option to use for a Mac. Is this the case? Should i be requesting a different modem from Bell?
    2. If i was to get an Airport Express would this help? Would i be able to install the Express wirelessly and keep it in a different part of the house to maintain a stronger connection?  or does it have to be directly connected to the modem in order to work.
What are my options for getting a stronger connection for my iPad?
    Thanx in advance,
    Amy

    1. I remember a few years back someone at the Apple store saying that this modem was not the best option to use for a Mac. Is this the case? Should i be requesting a different modem from Bell?
Well, they did work for Apple, and would probably pick up a sales commission on any product that they sold, so you might want to to keep that in mind.
    2. If i was to get an Airport Express would this help?
It would provide more wireless coverage in a remote area.....IF....it was connected back to your 2-Wire modem/router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
Would i be able to install the Express wirelessly and keep it in a different part of the house to maintain a stronger connection?
Unfortunately, the Express would not be compatible with the 2-Wire for this purpose.
If you cannot add the Express using a wired Ethenret connection, check with your Internet Service Provider to see if they have a device that is compatible with the 2-Wire product.
There are other options, but that would involve buying 2 AirPort Express devices.....one to connect directly to your 2-Wire device and the other to "extend" the signal using wireless only.

  • Airport express and the existing wireless router problem.......

I have a wireless router working fine in my house in fact i'm using it right now with my old
12" G4 power book to send this message, but i have recently bought a mac pro and totally forgot to put an airport card in it when configuring it. (oops) so i have bought an airport express to link the mother ship up to the internet and network but with no joy so far!!!
can anyone help,i understand to do this the airport is set to "Bridge Mode" but i still can't get the bugger to work.
    Please help.

Is your "wireless router" an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or another AirPort Express (AX)? If not, you probably will not be able to do this.
The Ethernet port on the AX is active ONLY when the AX uses WDS to wirelessly connect to a network. Unfortunately most (nearly all) are NOT compatible with Apple's WDS and therefore this is not possible.

  • Airport Express and sky broadband - wireless?

I recently changed from BT to sky and since changing have not been able to get my AX to work wirelessly.  It seems too much of a coincidence that it should have given up the ghost at the same time but who knows.....
I have the AX plugged in in another room and connected to my AVR via the jack plug to optical cable i/p.  The AX light is solid green and i can see it is connected off the AX utility on my iPad and also on iTunes onthe iMac.  I use it primarily to stream music from iTunes.
I can also see light coming out of the optical end as per normal but the AVR does not seem to be receiving anything.  It does not hold the digital chanel when polling, nor will it pick up a signal if forced to look only at the optical i/p.
    Help please!

Could I use Airport Extreme as the main router, and then use the Sky one to extend the signal?
No. Since the Sky router is not compatible with Apple's WDS that won't work.
You could connect the AEBS via Ethernet to the Sky router. Disable the Sky router's wireless interface. Configure the AEBS to act as a WDS main base station. Configure your current AirPort Express (AX) or another AX to act as a WDS remote.

  • WDS setup with Airport Express and other(non-Apple) wireless router

    Hi,
I am trying to configure a wireless network with one airport express and one Planex Wireless access point. Can anyone please point me to the settings to be made for such a scenario? I can use either of them as the main WDS device, and have a (wired)router provided by the ISP in the network.(so total 3 devices : airport, planex a/p , ISP router)
    Thanks.

I'm having the same problem, both with a Linksys WRVS4400Nv2, and a WRT54G. I've not put much effort into the WRT, but the WRVS was such a pain that I don't think I can get it to work at all.
The WRT doesn't have a section on WDS, but I've read that it's supported anyways, and nothing needs to be enabled on it. Is there a good step-by-step available here or elsewhere that uses close to the same router and Airport Express units, on the latest Airport setup software?
Basically, I'm trying to set this up for a guy in an ~8000 sq. foot house so he has wireless throughout it, and he wants itunes streaming from the AX. Has anyone done this?

  • Airport Express and MacBook Pro

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro is about 2 years old or so. It has only been today when my MacBook stopped receiving wireless (my airport express is right under my laptop, under the desk). The airport signal bar in the upper right corner reads strong. However, when i open Safari 3.2.1, it refuses to load any page. I know my Airport Express works as I am using it on my iPhone.
Is there a solution to help my macbook pro recognize the Airport signal again? I've tried restarting / resetting my Airport Express and cycling my cable modem. None seem to be the solution.
I open to my Airport Admin Utility and there seems to be negative noise and signal for my laptop... is there a reason for this? Here's a screenie of it.. the top is my laptop while the second one is my iphone: http://twitpic.com/wyz2/full
    thanks in advance!

    Hi,
I'm having exactly the same problem. My iPhone is perfect but my Macbook receives the wifi conection intermitantly. It usally works for a few minutes then drops out completely. I used iStumbler to confirm the Express signal is constant. Also, to check that other WiFi connections in the area weren't interferring by changing the channel. But it has to be the Macbook which incidentally works absolutely fine on every other Wifi connection I've connected to.
Some little setting on the Express perhaps? Did you have any joy?

  • Airport Express and the Epson Stylus DX7400

    Hello Experts!
I bought an Airport Express yesterday, and have successfully connected it to my home wireless network - I can see the Airport Express and modify settings wirelessly from my Mac (and indeed a PC as well). So far so good.
I have an Epson Stylus DX7400 printer/scanner. This prints perfectly when directly connected via the USB cable to the Mac (and a PC). Also good news.
However, when plugged into the Airport Express, it is simply not recognised in the Airport Utility and the Airport Utility shows "none" against USB printers where I presume it should show my printer in the list. I have upgraded to the latest firmwire, tried numerous re-boots and re-connections of both the Airport Express and the printer, but it simply does not seem to recognise that the printer is connected to the Airport Express.
Has anyone else has this problem? Is this printer incompatible with the Airport Express? I looked at this unofficial compatibility list (http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1013.html) but the printer is not listed as either compatible or incompatible.
If anyone has in fact got this printer to work with the Airport Express, I'd be interested to know how you did it, please!
    Many thanks,
    Andy.

Are you able to confirm that this is a known issue with the standard printer driver, and that using your Gutenprint suggestion is a known fix for this problem with Airport Express?
Yes. Click here for more information.
If I'm installing Gutenprint on the Mac, and subject to your response on the questions above, will that somehow also help the PC?
    No.
Finally, if you would be kind enough to note some brief instructions of the key steps involved in using Gutenprint to solve my problem, that would be much appreciated!

  • Can u run Airport Express and a wireless modem together?

Can u run Airport Express and a wireless modem together at the same time?
I'm using AE purely for music distribution and have just bought a wireless modem for the internet (not a AE). However I can now only select either the AE network, OR the wireless internet network (it's BT HomeHub). Hence I can either play music or use the internet, but not together!
    Any ideas anyone..??

You should configure your AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network provided by the modem. The instructions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • How do I know "Roaming Network" is working with Airport Express and Airport Extreme and should I use extended wireless network for third Express?

Attempting to eliminate a dead spot in Wifi coverage [and implement AirPlay] have one Airport Extreme 802.11n and two Airport Express 802.11n's.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145
The Airport Extreme is of course connected to cable modem and Ethernet switch, and one Airport Express is connected to the Ethernet network. As per instructions for creating a "Roaming Network", Airport Express is set to same SSID, security type, and Password.
    Questions:
    1. How does the client device know which Airport to connect to? In other words, will it switch to the closer WiFi transmitter automatically? The WiFi reception problem is intermittent in the fringe areas so what I do not want it for it to stick with the more distant Airport Extreme in the basement when the Airport Express which is closer will work better.
    2. How can I tell which of the Airports the attached client device is using?
The third Airport Express will be in a third location - I was planning on using it also for expanding coverage but after reading the warnings about performance suffering when purely using WiFi for the expansion in this location ("Wireless Extended Network" without an ethernet connection) I have figured that the single wired Airport Express will be adequate and will use the third Express to do Airplay only.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
Question: Can I use this second Airport Express to extend the wireless network via "Extended Wireless Network" while the other two are in "Roaming Netowrk" configuration? Without bogging down??
    Mitch

    1. How does the client device know which Airport to connect to?
The Mac computer will automatically connect to the wireless access point with the strongest signal...which is probably the closest AirPort. An iPhone or iPad may not do this and will tend to stay connected to one AirPort.
    2. How can I tell which of the Airports the attached client device is using?
On a Mac, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility. Click on one of AirPorts. In the area to the right, locate the AirPort ID and jot that down. Then do the same for your other AirPort.
Move your Mac near one of the AirPorts and log on to the wireless. Hold down the option key on the Mac while you click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen. Look for the BSSID. That is the AirPort ID of the device to which you are connected.
If you are close to the "remote" AirPort, and you see the AIrPort ID of the "main" router when you are testing, then you know that the network is not configured correctly.
Can I use this second Airport Express to extend the wireless network via "Extended Wireless Network" while the other two are in "Roaming Netowrk" configuration? Without bogging down??
There will be a modest 10-15% bandwidth loss with the "extend" setup, assuming that the Express is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the AirPort to which it is associated. You can avoid the bandwidth loss if the Express is also connected via Ethernet as part of the roaming configuration.

  • Airport Express and Canon Pixma IP4500 wireless printing

    Hello,
I bought an Airport Express and set it up as an additional wireless network at an 5Ghz N mode. It's conneted to a Linksys Wireless router modem/router. Internet connectivity is fine from both iMac 24 and MacBook. Both use OSX 10.5.4.x
Airport is set up via USB with a Canon Pixma IP4500 inkjet. When connected directly to the iMac, it prints fine. When I connect the IP4500 to the Airport Express, I get an Error 300 - basically saying the printer is not responding.
The whole point of the Airport Express was a faster network for both wireless printing and playing iTunes wirelessly from the MacBook.
Any tips on what could be a common problem for this printer?
    Thanks

    I had a similar problem
I had to "add a new printer", so one printer refers to the directly connected printer and the other refers to the printer connected to the airport (bonjour).
    Greetings.

The ZyXEL P-2601HN-F1, as you know, is a combination DSL modem & 802.11n wireless router (or gateway device).
For your goal you will want to take a look at this Apple Support article for details on how to configure an AX for iTunes.
If you are still having difficulties with the AX joining the ZyXEL's wireless network, you can try the following:
    Temporarily disable wireless encryption.
If you are hidding the SSID, disable that feature.
Change the Mode Select setting to: 802.11g Only
Change the Channel Selection from "Auto" to a set channel, like 1, 6, or 11

    Hello all,
I have been tring to set up my Airport Express with my 3Com ADSL modem and wireless router all-in-one using WDS.
Initially while experimenting the express was showing up in the Airport Admin Utility, I tried a few settings and it does not show up anymore. The amber light keeps blinking and thats that!

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Is there anyway I can reset the airport express?
    KB 108044, Resetting AirPort Express
Also, how should I use it to extend the range of my wireless connection through out my home?
You can't wirelessly. The 3Com is not compatible with Apple's WDS which is the method for using the AirPort Express to wirelessly extend a network.
You can do it by connecting your AirPort Express via Ethernet to the 3Com.
