Airport Express and an External USB HDD
Hello All,
If you can help that would be brilliant. I have just been given an Airport Express as a present. Not sure why. I am wondering if there is a way to allow the software / hardware to pick up a USB HDD instead of a USB Printer. I noticed that the Airport software does show you a disk option in settings but it greyed out so you can not select it. I have got the Airtunes working and that is brilliant!!! I just dont want to have to return it if I can get the USB HDD to work with it.
I hope you can help.
Terry
Are there any other pieces of hardware from Apple that do Airtunes and USB HDD that are available?
No. The only device compatible with Airtunes is the AX.

Airport Express and an external hard drive???
I am thinking of getting the new LaCie La Cinema external hard drive that can play my movies however it can only run on USB2.0 and doesn't have wireless networking capabilities.
Is it possible to set up Airport Express near my TV, and plug the external hard disk into the network? This will make it very handy as my backup movies that I convert will go directly to my living room next to the TV.
Thx for your help.None of us know Apple's plans and speculation of future Apple plans and products is not allowed in this discussion area.
However since the AirPort Express (AX) has been in production for nearly 4 years with no announced updates... adding this functionality is probably not in the plans. -
Can I use time machine through airport express and an external hard drive?
I want to be able to use time machine remotely. I own a WD 1TB passport external hard drive. If I connect it to an airport express, will it backup my macbook pro?
Not sure what you mean by "remotely". Remotely on your network, or remotely over the Internet?
In either case, the AirPort Express does not support a hard drive. You would need an AirPort Extreme for that.
Trying to use Time Machine over the Internet is incredibly slow and unreliable. Remember, you are uploading. Upload speeds are often 10 times slower than download speeds with most Internet Service Providers. -
Airport Express and Seagate HD
alright i am thoroughly confused. i have been to the Apple store and asked more than one prepubescent representatives and have gotten the same line. "yes you can". my question was can i use my AirPort Express and an external hard drive and use time capsule wireless? so what did i do? i keep my two AirPort Expresses (the older ones, being that my computer can't support "n" why go by a new one) and go out and get a seagate freeagent 500gb i plug it into my computer and do an initial time capsule back up and then try to configure my AirPort Utility for a HD, but ***, i can't. i look at old threds and everyone says "nope, only printers"
so my question is. CAN I SET UP MY AIRPORT EXPRESS WITH AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE?
has anyone had any luck? (i have heard stories) if so, how did you do it? all i want to do is be able to back up my computer and play music from the external HD. please help!
thankRNinED, Welcome to the discussion area!
CAN I SET UP MY AIRPORT EXPRESS WITH AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
No. The USB port on the AirPort Express (AX) only supports compatible printers. -
How to add Airport Express and USB 2?
Hello all,
I have a Titanium 1ghz that currently has no Airport. I'd like to add Airport Express and USB 2. I know I can do both via the PCMCIA slot, but only one at a time.
(Before you say: Just add USB 2 via the slot, and then add a WiFi dongle via the new USB -- I need to use the Airport for Internet Sharing (the PB is going to be a slim little server/Airport hub), and I've never seen anyone (including me) succeed at getting an internet connection shared via a dongle.)
FWIW, the main reason I need the USB 2 is to connect a pair of external hard drives. If I could connect the USB drives via the Firewire ports, I'd be all set. Are there adapters that would let me do this?
Thoughts? They're much appreciated.
SJFWIW, the main reason I need the USB 2 is to connect a pair of external hard drives. If I could connect the USB drives via the Firewire ports, I'd be all set. Are there adapters that would let me do this?
No, there aren't. But it would be simple enough to replace your USB-only external drive enclosures with enclosures that have FireWire ports. Just swap the drive mechanisms themselves into the new enclosures. FireWire would give you better speed than USB2, and if your enclosures have two FW ports (say, one FW 400 and one FW 800) and their own power supplies, then you could daisy-chain both drives on the Tibook's single FW port.
Of course if you can get by without having the two drives connected at the *same time* as you're using the wifi connection, then a USB2 PC Card and a wifi PC Card (like this one) will serve you just fine. -
Question on Time Capsule and external USB HDD
Hello everyone,
I have a 500GB Time Capsule that is working wonderfully. I recently have been downloading a number of large .iso image files that are taking up a lot of space on my internal drive on my Macbook Pro. I do not back these files up on the Time Capsule as it is getting full and i want it to backup other more important things.
I do however wish to backup these files. My current desk is rather full and really will not allow me to purchase a large 3.5" HDD and plug it in USB.
Is it possible to plug an external drive into the back of the Time Capsule and have it be used as a wireless disk as well?
I would prefer to have that drive not be part of the Time Capsule disks, i just want to be able to access it wireless over my network.
I would be grateful if anyone can help me out. If this solution will not work, is there some sort of NAS disk solution i can get to work with my TC?
ThanksAll you need is an external USB HDD. It needs to be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended - Journaled), if you plan on a future Time Machine Disk on this drive, or FAT/FAT32. You could get a NAS, but you don't need to if you already have TC. Can I assume the USB port is free or do you have a USB printer hooked up to it?

I am connecting an external USB HDD and I can see it on my Apple Macbook Air. BUT this drive is READ only. How can I write to it?
Drive Partition and Format
1.Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive. -
Airport Express and USB Hard drive and extremely slow performance
HI Guys,
I seem to having a lot of trouble with an Airport express and a Lacie 1TB drive. While I have solved several problems by updating firmware and enabling journalling on the Lacie, I am still having problems with extremely slow performance with my macbook, particularly using itunes and Firefox.
Any ideas and any further information needed?
Regards

HI,
I formatted it using the Lacie setup program for Mac and later enabled it for journalling using Disk utility. This seemed to solve a lot of the recognition problems I was having, however the I-Tunes and firefox performance is still atrocious. If I do Need to completely reformat it using Disk Utility, will I lose my files on the disk now?
not if you move them to a temporary location before you start.
yes, you are better of formatting the drive with DU. -

Thx in advanceYes I have the same problem with a WD My Passport Essential on a 2011 iMac running Mavericks. Opening Unlock Drive I find it says 'The drive is already unlocked' but will not allow me to see the contents of the drive. Only the Smartware 'CD' image shows up in Finder. Unaccountably the same WD drive unlocks fine on a 2009 MacBook (also running 10.9) How can I 'set a breakpoint' as advised below in Terminal result...? I am worried I will accidentally lose the data on the 750Gb drive in the process of fixing the error.
Thank you for advice!

I have the most recent firmware on my Airport Express and have recently installed McAfee Security Center. When the Firewall is on, I can't access my remote speakers. When it is off I can. I have:
Added the IP address of the Airport Express as a trusted IP.
Added complete access for iTunes, Bonjour, and Airport Base Station Agent
Added access to UDP port 5353 for Airport discovery
Added ROAP access for ports 5000, 6000, and 6001 (just for good measure)
Added access to ports 42000-42999 for Radio Streaming
Added access to ports 554 and 7070 for RTSP
The problem remains. Firewall off - it works. Firewall on - it doesn't work.
Any thoughts? Before one of the last updates, I could access external HD via Airport USB. Now I cannot. Before updates, I could not access the 2 printers via AP USB; now I can. I makes no difference when I turn off firwall. All 3 devices go into USB hub. My computer does not recognize that there is an ext HD. Any suggestions??

External USB HDD Wireless Sharing
HI,
I have an external USB HDD which has an HFS partition which I used to backup my macbook using TimeMachine. Now I want to share my external USB HDD wirelessly.
I know it can be possible by using Airport Exterme Base Station or use the Time Capsule.
I want to know if any other Wireless Routers support the HFS partition to be shared wirelessly?By default, Personal File Sharing only shares specific directories on your boot drive and home directories. If you want to share external volumes you need to configure them manually.
The easiest way to do this is to get a copy of SharePoints which puts a nice GUI on the file sharing configuration files. -
Finder crashes when I try to open my external USB HDD
Hello all. I have been experiencing issues with my external USB HDD (WD Passport) and my Macbook Pro (Summer 2012) for some time. It looks that the HDD shows up on the desktop when I connect it but when I try to open the My Passport icon on the desktop Finder crashes. Finder works OK generally and I can see everything (even the Passport listed) but I cannot access the Passport HDD contents.
I have tried accessing it via terminal and managed to view the Passport contents ok (ls -ltr etc)
I have tried repairing the disk but the issue remains.
I have connected Passport to a Windows 7 PC and it works OK. I have even tried repairing it on a Windows PC but it has not helped.
Ejecting, rebooting etc does not solve the issue
Every time the issue occurs I see a PM Report Crash for Finder
11/24/13 5:46:21.004 PM ReportCrash[1374]: Saved crash report for Finder[1377] version 10.8.3 (10.8.3) to /Users/Panos/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Finder_2013-11-24-174621_Panos-MacB ook-Pro.crash
Could you please suggest any solution to this problem??Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

A Time Capsule, Airport Express and AT&T 2Wire walk into a bar...
Alas, I'm sure this question has been asked before, but my reserach keeps turning up separate answers. So I thought I'd turn to this forum for some advice. Ultimately I'm seeks suggestions on various ways to configure my network to allow easy backups, connection two rooms, and wirelessly print from anywhere.
I have a:
Time Capsule (dual band) - used for Time Machine backups
Airport Express (older)
and new 2Wire 3800HGV-B wireless modem/router from AT&T (for U-verse internet/TV)
My room configuration is:
Living room with TV, internet connected DVD player, and new AT&T 2Wire Wireless U-verse modem
Home office with 2 desktop comptuers (no wireless cards) and a USB printer.
Two roaming laptops which move around the rest of the house
The livingroom and the office can't be connected with a physical wire.
What I was hoping to do was setup my office with the Time Capsule in the office as a wired hub, and then use it as a wirelessly bridge to the 2Wire network. But as I understand it, a Time Capsule can't be used as a bridge to a non-Apple product. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Alternately I could always get wireless cards for the desktop computers, but this leaves the printer.
I've read suggesitons of people who have used their TC as the primary router, disabling wireless on their AT&T 2Wire, and hooking the two together with ethernet. Others who just join the TC to the 2Wireness network. But really what I'm seeking is a way to join the two rooms.
Any thoughts? Am I asking the right questions or providing the right information?
Much thanks,
dana.So I figured I'd go with an initial suggestion and attached my TC via ethernet to the 2Wire modem/router in my living room, and make the TC my primary wireless router.
Good plan
since both will be in the same room, I assume I need to disable wireless on the 2Wire
Correct
What kind of configuration do I need to do on the TC, or do I just following the wizard and select 'Extend existing network'?
You can follow the guided setup or I can give you a step by step manual setup. In either case, you will configure the TC to "Create a wireless network".
("Extend" is only used if the TC connects using wireless only....you will be using Ethernet from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2-Wire to the WAN port (world icon) on the TC.
The guided setup will normally sense that the TC is connected to another router and suggest that the TC be configured in Bridge Mode, which is the correct setting. Otherwise, select the Bridge Mode option when it is presented.
Note....If you have a newer dual band TC, the Guest Network option cannot be enabled when the TC is configured in Bridge Mode. So, if you want a "Guest" network, maybe the 2-Wire could provide that service.
Should I attach this (via ethernet) to the TC or the 2Wire?
Pick a LAN <-> port on either one, your choice, whichever is easier
What should the AT&T DVR be connected to?
I'm not familiar with an AT&T DVR, but if it connects via Ethernet, you can connect to a LAN <-> port on either the 2-Wire or the TC
For printing, my plan is to attach the printer through USB to the Airport Express and then connect that wirelessly to the TC network (though my first attempt at this failed to connect).
Suggest that you get the TC up and working smoothly. Then tackle the Express. -
Is Printer HP Laserjet 1018 compatible with Airport Express and windows
I am using HP Laserjet 1018 which is connected directly to the PC.
As it is a USB printer but not a wifi one, can I connect it to Airport Express and will it be recognised ?
Thank you for your answers.Hello TigerParis75,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
AirPort Utility 6.x: Use a USB printer on your Wi-Fi network
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5114
Just make sure you have all the updated version of the drivers.
Best of luck,

I currently have a linksys wireless router attached to the Internet. I have an A1264 Airport Express connected by Ethernet to the linksys router. I have two network names, one for each wireless network.
I purchased a new A1392 Airport Express to replace the linksys router and join to the A1264 Airport Express, and I want to have one network name as a result.
How do I do this? I realize that I have to reconfigure the A1264 device so that it is an extension of the A1392 device. You have a fairly complicated set up, so I suggest that it would make sense to tackle things in stages, testing each stage as you go, before proceding to the next stage.
Stage 1 would be setting up the A1392 first to the cable modem, and then making sure that everything is working correctly on the A1392 Express
Stage 2 would be adding the Netgear switch and testing each port with a laptop connected via Ethernet to make sure that everything is operational on the switch
Stage 3 would be connecting the A1264 Express and testing to make sure that it is extending the network correctly
Stage 4 would be adding other Ethernet devices to the Netgear switch and testing each one at a time before adding the next device. There is some question about whether an iOS device can print to an Ethernet connected printer....even if the printer is AirPrint compatible. You may need to connect the HP using wireless...not Ethernet....to gain full AirPrint functionality, or use another application that will allow printing like Printopia or Print Central using the Ethernet connection on the HP.
Stage 5 would be adding the printer to the A1264 AirPort Express.
You do not mention how the printer will connect to the A1264 Express, but I assume that it will be USB from your description. Most printers will work, but you really will not know if your printer will work until you try.
Remember that only printing will be supported at the USB port of the Express. If you have an all-in-one type device, scan, maintenance, and other advanced features will not be operational whent the device is connected to the AirPort Express.
If you want to print from an iOS device like an iPad or iPhone, plan to add additonal software like Printopia or Print Central to possibly allow this function. There are no guarantees here as far as the iOS devices.

Will star transformation be scalable?
This is rather an algorithmic question I happen to read a post about a real-world problem. http://groups.google.com/group/comp.databases.oracle.server/browse_thread/thread/0db61c4fab79769a?hl=en Simple back envelope analysis shows that star transform
