Airport express and flashing amber light

Decided to go wireless to take advantage of new printer with wireless capablities. ibook bought in 01 did not have airport card, so got refurb airport card (802.11g). Bought Airport express at local shop (AX?). Put in Airport card by self without problem (impressed wife). Set up AX with Airport assistant. Have DSL modem through earthlink (Netopia). First window; set up new base station. Check. Second window; identify new wireless network. Check. Third window; Choice between connection with a home router or direct connection between internet and base station with a DSL modem. Naturally, initially choose DSL modem. Next window security; 128 WEP (more compatible with older wireless) or WPA2 ( more secure). Go with WPA2. Next windows PPoE account name/passwords, etc. Set up complete. Result: Can not connect to internet. Error window: can't find server. Airport icon in menu bar displaying "looking for PPoE host" Of note, the light on the AX is solid green. Reset the AX. Try again using the 128 WEP security with same result. Reset the AX. Try again using the home router choice instead of DSL modem with WPA2 security. Same result. Reset the AX. Try again with home router choice and 128 WEP security. Result: Can connect to internet, but can not connect with printer and light on AX is now flashing amber! Wife not impressed. Why doesn't the DSL modem choice work since that is what I have and what does "looking for PPPoE host" mean? Do I have the PPPoE account name/password wrong. Why does the AX light flash amber if I am connected to the internet? Am I still secure? Why can I not print if I am indeed connected to the wireless network (the printer is on, on the printer list, etc)? Thoughts welcomed prior to spending the bucks to talk to a support tech.

I need to verify which AirPort card (the original or the Extreme) you installed in your iBook. The 2001 iBook models were AirPort ready, meaning they can only work with the original AirPort card. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107908)
or WPA2 ( more secure). Go with WPA2
WPA2 would be the best choice, except if you installed the original AirPort card which doesn't support WPA2. However, it will work with WPA if it meets certain requirements.

When using DSL service that requires PPPoE for connectivity and a wireless router, the router is the only device required to be set up for PPPoE access. All wireless Mac computers connecting to the router need to be setup for DHCP access, as follows:
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
- Verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "New" to create one. - Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
- Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
AirPort tab
- By default, join: Automatic
TCP/IP tab
- Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
- Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
Proxies tab
- Configure Proxies: Manually
- Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
- Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
- Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
- Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)

  • Airport express 'n' Flashing Amber light. Solved.

    Hope this helps someone else...........
I had a power cut in the house. On system (netgear 'N' router) power up the AE'n' light was flashing amber, this has happened before when I switched the power to it by mistake, but this time the Airport Utility just would not find the AE'n' at all.
To forums here we go.........and this is what I tried AND IT WORKED.
I connected the AE'n' via an ethernet cable to my MBP directly.
    Power on AE'n'.
Open Airport Utility. (I don't remember having to rescan)
A page with AE'n' is reporting a problem came up.
AND THIS IS THE REASON THE BLASTED THING WAS NOT BEING FOUND.
*+The IP address my AE'n' had was not within my routers allowed list.+*
It was 156.123.0.25 for example when it should have been 194.167.0.(1-215)
So I assigned an IP manually from the page 194.167.0.19 (you would need to use your own routers allowed list of IP's)
Clicked Continue and then Airport Utility applied new settings and rebooted the AE'n'.
    GREEN LIGHT BABY!!!!!!!!!
    Unplugged my ethernet cable.
    STILL GREEN LIGHT BABY!!!!!!!!
MUSIC AND PRINTER are both up and running smooth.....

There were two messages. First was internet connection which was perfectly ok from the aiport extreme and the second message was wireless set-up or something to that extent, which I set-up twice after hard resetting the express twice.

I have an Airport Express, which flashes amber, but when I go to manual set up, it says there's an error and tells me to close configuration? Once I complete that, the same thing occurs, and there's another error message?

Is this a new AirPort Express, or one that you have had for some time that has now developed problems?
What function do you want the Express to perform on your network?

  • HT4262 I moved my airport express and now the light is solid orange.  What is wrong?

I moved my airport express and now the light is solid orange.  What is wrong?

Solid amber is an indication that the AirPort Express has locked up, or that an internal electrical component has failed.
Power off the Express for a few minutes, then power it up again. If the solid amber light persists, the next step would be to perform a Factory Default Reset on the Express to see if that will clear the lockup so the Express can be re-configured.

  • Airport Express and Flashing Yellow - Please Help!

I just purchased an Airport Express and cannot get anything the status indicator to flash anything other than a yellow. I am working on a Win 7 64 bit platform and my router is Netgear N600 (model WNDR3700). The only changes I made to the router is via its utility to enter the Airport ID MAC address into the Netgears "Wireless Acces List". I deperately need input on what I might be doing wrong or need to do to my router's setup. Below are what I have tried and status info:
    What I have tried:
    1) Entered the AIrport's MAC address into my Netgear Router's "Wireless Access List", as well as the Ether ID (out of desperation).
    2) Installed on my PC the latest version of the Airport Utility  (5.5.3).
    3) Plugged the Airport directly in port 4 of my Netgeat Router.
    4) Changed ethernet cables.
    5) Reset the Airport.
    6) Rebooted the Netgear and my PC.
    7) Plugged the ethernet cable from the modem directly into the Airport.
    Info:
    1) When the Airport is first turned on (ethernet is already plugged in), the status light turns solid greem, then goes to solid yellow for a bit, and then immediately goes to flashing yellow (approx 2 seconds between flashes) and stays that way.
    2) then If I run my Advanced IP Scanner if shows the Airport, an IP of 192.168.1.20, the Airport's ethernet MAC address. The status shows "Ok".
    3) If I unplug the Airport and click rescan on the IP Scanner the device remains present but the status is changed to "Dead".
Despite what I tried I get only get the yellow flashing light? Do I have a bad Airport Express or is this a failure on my part to properly set up the Netgear? Thanks in advance for any help offered.

The AirPort Express flashing yellow means it it not receiving a valid IP address. This is issued by your router.
I recommend disabling your Netgear's "Wireless Access List" until you get it resolved.
One thing that you did not mention is using AirPort Utility. You need to configure the Express using AirPort Utility for Windows. If you don't have that click here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1391
Read about designing AirPort Networks here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/designing_airport_networks_10.5-windows.pdf
A new Express creates an unprotected wireless network named "Apple Network xxxxx". You need to disconnect from your existing network and connect to that network in order for AirPort Utility to communicate with the Express. Most likely you will have to temporarily disable any and all anti-virus / firewall / security software running on your Windows to do this. If you don't see that network you will not get anywhere.
When you are finished configuring the Express in AirPort Utility, including addressing any unresolved conflicts it may report, click the button to restart it. AirPort Utility will say "the Express is now restarting" but the temporary network that it created for you to configure it will cease to exist, so just close the window. Reconnect to your usual wireless network which will now welcome the Express as a member.
After it restarts the Express should show a happy green light.
When you are finished re-enable all your Windows firewalls and AV software.

  • Time Capsule Undiscoverable and flashing amber lights?

    Hi,
I have had my time capsule connected via ethernet to a wireless router on an unsecured wifi network.
Yesterday all of a sudden the time capsule became undiscoverable in the middle of a backup and the amber light is flashing and airport utility cant find it.
    Can anybody help?

Last resort is a factory default reset.
Power down the Time Capsule for 30 minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in while you plug the power back in on the Time Capsule
Keep holding the reset button until the amber light blinks more quickly, hold a few more seconds and then release
Try again. If you try this a few times and still cannot connect, you'll need to take the TC in to the Apple store to have them take a look.

  • Unable to boot Cisco Ironport C160, beeps and flashing amber light

At first RAID staus was showing as degraded. I tried to rebuild the RAID  but hat failed. I was able to logon and update to version 8.0 after the RAID rebuild failed.
Now when I try to boot the ironport it beeps twice and keeps on repeating every 10 seconds or so, and there is also a flashing amber light at the back and front of the device.
Suspecting that there was a problem with the hard drives i tried to restore a recent image of the Ironport that I had, hoping that the RAID would rebuild, But that is not the case. The Ironport is still unable to boot and is beeping twice as well as the flashing amber light.
Does anyone know if there is anyhting that I can do to rectify this problem?
    Thanks in advance

Amber light usually means hardware issue. You should contact TAC.
It is not clear what you did to rebuild the RAID but you should try nothing before discussing with TAC. Any attempt to do reimage could break the box for good.
At the moment you have access to the box, enable remote access and call TAC.
There is an account, named enablediag  which can be used for troubleshooting. It has the option to open remote access so TAC can assist further. The password is the same as your admin account.
    I hope this helps.

  • Airport express, Airtunes, flashing amber

I picked up a new Airport Express this week. I bought it for the sole purpose of streaming iTunes from the iMac in the den to the home theater unit in the living room or the stereo in the shop. I have no need for wireless internet or wireless connection to printer etc.
I have completed 'some' of the setup and am successfully listening to iTunes through the Home theater system. Setup seems to include connection to modem or it won't stop giving me the flashing amber. It also lets me know I haven't done this each time I sign on.
Do I need to go through that part of the setup to get my solid green light, or am I missing something else somewhere? Not finding the answer in the accompanying manual.

Try opening AirPort Utility and clicking on Manual Setup
When the summary page opens, click on the word "Status" and a window will open to probably explain that you do not have an internet connection set up.
You should see an option to "ignore" this warning and you may be asked to repeat the "ignore" instruction.
Once you update the settings and restart, the AX lamp should turn green and you should not see this warning again.

  • Cannot play to stereo through airport express - unit flashes amber

I cannot play to my stereo through the airport express. I already have a wireless network set up which works fine (cable modem to wireless linksys router. Wireless to desktop which has linksys antenna).
I have plugged in the airport express near the stereo (only 10 ft. from PC) and connected it to the receiver. The "Airport Admin Utility" is also installed. After no drop down menu shows in iTunes (latest version is installed), I performed a hard reset on the AE.
The Admin Utility has been uninstalled and re-installed and the modem has also been reset (unplugging, waiting a few seconds, then plugging in again).
    HELP!!!!!!!!!

Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station (AX)'s settings:
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
    - Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
    Music tab
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    - iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
    - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • I am upgrading wi-fi router from Airport Express to Airport Extreme. I followed set up instructions yet I am still getting the flashing amber light and cannot setup (using manual setup or the continue button).  What should I do??

    Hello,
I am upgrading my wireless router from an Airport Express to an Airport Extreme.  After disconnecting the Express and plugging the Extreme via ethernet cable to the modem, I am receiving a flashing amber light after connecting the power source.  I also reset the modem while the Extreme was still powered and plugged into the modem, but no luck.  I also tried resetting the modem and the Extreme and still no resolution.  Please advise.  Thank you!

This error usually occurs when the Windows Firewall and/or anti-virus software blocks the connection attempt from the PC to the AirPort Extreme.
Microsoft Security Essentials can do the same thing.
Things would be much easier if you had a Mac or iPhone or iPad to set up the AirPort Extreme. Otherwise try turning off the Windows Firewall and Anti-Virus programs, etc on the PC.
Restart the PC, then see if the PC can contact the AiPort Extreme. It will likely help to connect an Ethernet cable from the PC to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme. You can disconnect the Ethernet cable once the AirPort Extreme has been configured.
Re-enable the Windows Firewall, Anti-Virus, etc and restart the PC.

  • Airport Express will not stop flashing amber light; Reset multiple times; Works for a second with green light and then resumes flashing amber

I bought an Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme about a month ago. It worked great until 2 weeks ago it started flashing amber. I reset it and set it up via airport utility and it would work for a little while, with great connection, and then it resumes the flashing amber light. Here is the error message:
"This AirPort base station was unable to extend the wireless network. Make sure the wireless network you're trying to extend was set up and is working correctly, that you entered a matching wireless network password into this device, and that this device is in range of the wireless network."
The Airport Extreme is in working condition, in range, and entered in correctly. I do not understand how it can work great for a second and then stop.
    Thanks!

Power off both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the AirPort Extreme, and let it run a few minutes
Then, power up the AirPort Express
If you continue to have difficulty, ask Apple to replace the AirPort Express.

  • Airport express not working (flashing amber light)

I just bought an airport express and have spent days trying to set it up with my Cable modem. I use Time Warners roadrunner as my service provider and know that the cable modem is not the problem because the internet works fine when I hook my mac laptop directly up to the modem via ethernet cable. Originally when I first plugged in the airport express base station I only received the flashing amber light. I have tried unplugging the modem and plugging it back in multiple times, but I continuously get the flashing amber light on the airport base station. My modem however recognizes the airport and is flashing the light that signals that it is linked to a computer.
My computer recognizes the airport, I get a strong signal and the airport utility says that everything is ok but the light on the base station flashes amber and the Internet wont work. Originally I had it set to Connect Using: Ethernet and Configure TCP/IP: DHCP and the light flashed amber so I started messing around with the settings. I changed it to Configure TCP/IP: PPPoE but was not sure what my login and password would be so I used my account information for roadrunner and to my surprise the light stopped flashing amber and turned green. I thought my problem was miraculously solved but the Internet still wouldn’t work, it kept trying to connect to the PPOE server with no luck. I had never expected the wireless to work under the PPOE setting so I was very surprised that the light turned green rather than amber. This is very confusing to me so I put the configure setting back to Ethernet rather than PPPoE and the light started flashing amber again. I have put the airport back to its default settings many times and tried starting over, but I still get the amber light.
I have run out of things to try and do not know a whole lot about wireless Internet so any help would be useful. I know of other people that have set up their airport express with very little hassle and knowledge of computers, so I thought this was going to be an easy process, apparently I was very wrong.

Roadrunner's cable internet service uses DHCP and not PPPoE - so the first thing you need to do is change that configuration back to DHCP on your Airport Express.
Then unplug both the cable modem and Airport Express from power for a while - the longer the better. Try five minutes, and if that doesn't work then try all day or overnight. After you get tired waiting, plug the modem back into power and wait a minute. Then plug the Airport Express into power - and hopefully by now Roadrunner's connection will have been reset and the Airport Express will be able to establish a connection, get an IP address, and show you the solid green status light.
