Airport Express and Internet Connection Sharing through XP

Hi all,
Quick question that I'm stumbling over a little.
I'm currently staying at a relative's house using their XP desktop, so I can't change the settings too much without seeming like a discourteous guest! Their PC is set up with a USB broadband modem, and no router. What I would like to do is share that internet connection with a couple of Macbooks wirelessly.
Internet -> USB modem -> XP desktop -> LAN cable -> Airport Express -> Wireless Macbooks
I have added an Airport Express and connected it straight into the PC's LAN port. The AE is in bridge mode, so it does not distribute IP addresses. Instead, the PC is distributing IP addresses in the range 192.168.0.xxx. This is working without a problem, as no fewer than four laptops and an iPhone have been designated unique IPs without problem.
Unfortunately, I don't know where to go from there, as nothing but the XP desktop will connect to the internet. Also, curiously, the XP machine can ping everything on the network, but the devices connecting to the AE wirelessly can only ping as far as the AE, and can't 'see' the XP desktop.
I feel like I'm not far from a solution, and any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

Never mind! Figured it out myself. Turns out my relatives had McAffee running on their XP desktop. Disabled it, and everything works wonderfully.

Why won't my Airport Express allow internet connection on my Blu Ray when there is internet connection on my IMac?

I'm guessing you only have the modem/router supplied by your isp and the Airport Express.  Is the Airport Express connected to the modem/router with an ethernet cable?  If not, plug one end of the cable into an available port on the modem/router and the other end in to the WAN port, indicated with a dashed circle, on the Airport Express.
    Have a nice day.

  • AirPort Express (2nd) Internet Connection Speed

    Dear All
    First of all, I looked everywhere on the internet about this issue I’m having and couldn’t find any solution. To explain my issue let me tell you how and why I use AirPort Express shortly;
    My Purpose
I have a wireless network and all my PCs are connected in one network. I have a Windows server and using it for general purposes and also as a file server. But if someone joins my network, they all are able to see my shared folders. They are able to read/write files (even delete them).
So I decided to create 2 networks with AirPort Express (2nd Generation). I have a wireless network for internal use only (for me and my PCs) and one Guest network.
Everything seems okay and there is nothing wrong.
How I Installed AirPort Express (APE)
I connected APE to my router (standard US Robotics DSL router) and my switch to APE. I used AirPort Utility on a Windows 8 PC and configured APE settings.
Base Station status seems normal (have a green light as well) and works okay. I can use my internal network, my PCs are communication with each other (they are all on the same switch). Guest network also works okay and seems like there is nothing wrong.
My router uses 192.168.2.xx IP range and APE is using its own 10.0.1.xx IP range. This makes APE to add an issue to Issues list as Double NAT.
    What is Wrong?
I have internet connection and I can browse web pages and do that kind of things. But my internet connection is really slow and some times cannot display web pages. I have to refresh some pages a few times to display it. My ping increased 5-6 times over than normal.
I thought the problem is the PC that I’m using but then realized that every PC has the same issue. I made a speed test and it showed 352ms ping to the nearest server to me which is really a high value.
My connection is unstable. It’s not dropping but speed suffers. Here is a test result. In this test my ping was 31 ms but as you see speeds are suffering. My connection is supposed to be 8mbps (Down) and 1mbps (Up).
What should I do to fix it? What is the point I’m missing? Could you please help me? Please let me know if you require further information.
    Thank you very much.
    Best Regards

    Dear All;
I just disabled DHCP Server from my router and now it seems to be better. But I don't know if it's something that I shouldn't do or not. Have any ideas?
This is the new result after disabling DHCP from my US Robotics router. There are still some minor issues (latency, slow downs etc.) but now seems to be better than before.
PS: I still have that "Double NAT" notification under Issues section.

  • Airport express - no internet connection

    Hi
I've bought an airport express and am trying to connect wirelessly to the internet in my ibook with it.
I have connected the airport express via ethernet to my AOL broadband modem and set up a network on the ibook which says its connected but i cannot get onto the internet.
Is it possible that the ethernet cable is faulty?
Any help possible would be grateful.
    Thanks

  • Airport Express and Internet sharing.

I have been told that I can share the internet connection, wireless, of a Mac that is connected to the internet via the ethernet port by using Airport Express. I am at a loss on how to create this environment. Can anyone help? I am trying to create a wireless network to use my itouch through internet sharing.

Please see this Apple Tech Help page.

  • Using Airport Express as internet connection for one Mac and one PC

Will probably be judged a complete dork for this question. I have successfully set up my Imac G5 to run an internet connection through an Airport express. My partner runs a PC (Windows XP) and I want to connect this too. Have installed a USB wireless card on the PC, and installed Airport Utility, but it just won't find the Airport Express - it will however find the Imac with something like 96% signal strength. So I set up a network on the Mac and have successfully linked into it with the PC, but it soon comes up with a connectivity problem that will not allow internet browsing. So two questions - can I connect two computers to the Airport Express at once for internet browsing, or do I have to do it through linking the PC to a wireless network? If the latter is the route - any ideas on what the connectivity issue will be? Help!

No, not if the AirPort Express "joins" the wireless network.
No, I do not want to join a network.
It is possible to have the AirPort Express "create" a separate wireless network that would not have access to the Internet, but if you did this, you would need to log off of your normal network....(losing your Internet connection) and then log onto the AirPort Express network when you wanted to listen to AirPlay.
Then, when you wanted to have Internet access, you would have to log off of the AirPort Express network and log back onto your normal wireless network.
Ok, I understand that it is not possible to use airport express only for sound streaming while having an Internet connection at the same time. Airport express does need to join a network if I want sound streaming next an Internet connection. I wanted airport express not to get into way of my Internet connection because in this case the sound streaming messes up sometimes. When I configure airport express only as a sound output, the problems I encounter fade away but then I cannot access to the Internet. Anyhow thanks a lot for the answer.

  • Airport Express and iMac connection cuts out all the time

I have an Airport Express set to 802.11n with b and g compatibility. It is connected to a DSL modem with a static IP address via an Ethernet cable. I use a MacBook Air in the same room as the AE. In another room, I have a 24" iMac (Intel). The iMac is always connected to the AE network as is the MBA. Everytime I make a connection to the iMac (via Screen Sharing or other), the connection cuts out after awhile. There is no interference with the iMac connection, the AE is using a channel no one else around me is using, it just suddenly stops receiving any packets from the AE. I have to open Safari, wait for a website not to load, click on the Network Diagnostic button, go through the reconnection process to the AE network and then it comes back and tells me all is OK. The energy saver is set so the computer never falls to sleep and it is not related to the screen saver coming on.
It just stops sending data to the iMac. All firmware and software are up to date. I have the same problem when using Back to My Mac outside the home. Sometimes I can connect and sometimes I can't.
    Can anyone help?

Hi, Thanks for the suggestions. Here are the answers to your questions:
Channel selection is on Automatic. I have tried switching channels on both my DSL router (and it doesn't go to the channel I select!) and on the AE. Performance is the same.
iMac still drops connection even if MBA is not logged onto the network.
Screen Sharing's performance is poor, even if iMac is receiving other internet data (Safari or iTunes downloads)
MBA always has a good connection
Each machine is using 10.5.5. This problem exists only in the last couple of months when my DSL provider (all Linux) changed some of their configurations.
I will try to do the terminal exercise today. So far this am and last night, no dropped connections. Go figure!

  • VPN and Internet Connection Sharing? (bridging remote networks)

I'd like to try an experiment and some advice from this list will be useful.
+Summary: Can a Mac with two interfaces activate VPN and Internet sharing simultaneously to bridge two remote networks?+
I've created a PPTP VPN server on our XServe at work and opened the appropriate ports on our firewall. This and a second location are linked with standard (but fast) ADSL broadband. I can log in from both Mac and Windows VPN clients at an external location and indeed the experience is just like being at work- printers, file servers and other resources (eg networked Filemaker databases) are all visible. Yay.
Question: Is it possible to extend this concept further by logging onto our VPN with once interface (eg Airport) +and then+ enabling Internet Sharing through the second interface (eg Ethernet)? Will this allow a small network connected through the second interface to all behave as though they are on the work network, with transparent access to fileservers, printers and so on, without each bothering individually with VPNs and so on? I suspect there are physical boxes that will do this, but it would be wonderful to know if I can get a Mac with two NICs to do the same job, acting as a router between the two networks. Are there any limitations to this? I am happy to tweak under the hood if need be. I just need to know if this is possible, even in theory, and what the limitations might be.
    Thanks.

    Hey Nathan...
My VPN is down at the moment, but I think your going to have to manually configure all of the "clients" who are sharing the VPN to an IP range that your office uses. When you connect to your VPN, check your network prefs, and you'll see the IP addresses assigned to your VPN are similar to your network at the office. So, in a way, your sharing computer has 2 IP addresses... one from your modem or router at home, and one from the VPN server at the office. It's this 2nd IP address that allows you to appear to be on the network at the office.
So, if you can find a way to set up your shared clients the same way.... it might work. It will also be VERY helpful if your IP range at home is different from the IP range at the office....192.168... for one...and 10.0.0 for the other. (Whether traffic will pass thru your "sharing server" is a different matter altogether.)
Now, and I'm really guessing here.. if this works at all... you may be only able to access stuff from the office on your "shared clients" (ie no internet).... the way around that is to set up your VPN to allow VPN clients to pull stuff from the internet from the office thu the VPN... and for the life of me don't remember how that is done. But it will most likely be a bit slow.
I'd start with the basics... setup one client with a manual IP address/router/dns servers, and try to ping a computer at the office. If this works... at least part of your problem is solved.
With all that said... it may not work at all. Good Luck!

  • Airport Express lost internet connection

Wireless modem reset by internet provider.
Can connect to internet via ethernet connection between computer and modem.
Can set up airport express, all computers see & connect to wireless network and green light on a/e.
Connect airport express directly to moden, green light but no internet connection.
rebooted modem, a/e, computer, reconfigured wireless network, still no internet.
Week ago everything was fine, then amber blinking light on a/e for couple days and then lost connectivity.

Suggest that you temporarily turn off wireless on your laptop and connect it to one of the ethernet ports on the Netgear router to see if you can get an internet connection that way. If you can, check the other ethernet ports on the Netgear to makes sure they are all operating.
However, if you can't get an internet connection with the laptop connected directly to the Netgear, then the probable trouble spot points to the ethernet ports/switch on the Netgear.
If everything checks OK in the first paragraph, then you know that the Netgear is functioning correctly and you can look elsewhere for the issue.
Try a factory default reset on the AirPort Express again as follows:
Power it down for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding the button in as you plug the AirPort Express back in to power
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
After reconfiguration of the AirPort Express, if you continue to receive the "no ethernet" message after a few tries, then it's likely that there has been an internal failure within the AirPort Express. This can sometimes occur on AirPort Express devices that are a couple of years old or older.
If that's the case, I'm afraid the AirPort Express will need to be replaced.

  • Networking B210a via Airport Express disables internet connection

I'm trying to set up a new B210a printer.  We have a PC & a MAC.  I have an airport express router, so wireless between printer & desktops, then ethernet link from router to modem.  Can access the internet no problem while B210a switched off.  Can print from desktop to B210a when its switched on, but at that point the internet access stops.  Any ideas?

Hi there.  I have now tried connecting the printer to the Airport Extreme router using the usb port.  I've therefore also disabled the wifi mode on the B210 printer.  Print jobs hang / go no-where.  Internet access is no longer blocked, but can't print!  Whats the next step?  Hope you can help.  Thanks.
I just reread your recent post.
Why are you now connecting it to your Airport Extreme instead of the Airport Express?
Do you have an Airport Extreme Router and no Airport Express network extender? If that is the case I have misunderstood.
Does your Windows PC have a wireless network card that is  WPS capable?
Are you using the latest Windows and Apple OSX drivers from your printer's suport webpages?
The HP Wireless Printing Center is another great  driver and information resource.
I believe you should take a read of this thread. Member Wi-Fi Guy has written an article titled "Rapid Wireless Installation of HP Printers on Apple Airport Extreme 802.11n Routers. He described the same method I used with a clients home Apple network which consisted of an Airport Extreme an Airport Express a  iMac and an HP wireless printer.. I used WPS and ifound it to be pretty straightforward to set up

  • HT1178 Bot new AirPort Extreme Tme capsule to replace old model Airport Express. (and having connectivity issues)

I am running OSx 10.6.8 and downloaded the utility version 5.6.1.
Using the new utility, and setting it up as a new network, it finds and sets up the time capsule part just fine, I was able to start a backup, so it looked it was working ok.
But when it comes to the wireless part, the utility says it was set up correctly, but I do not get any response from the Internet.
I have the ability to connect to the original airport express based network, so I am not net less at the moment.
But whenever I try to connect to the new network via the AirPort Extreme, does not work.  What am I missing?

The new AC version TC requires v6 airport utility.. so you need at least Lion running on the computer to do the setup.
5.6 utility will not do the setup correctly.
You can also use the airport utility for iOS if you have a recent iphone/ipad..

  • Airport Express and PC connectivity

I have a time capsule as my main wireless router and a airport express to extend the range of the network. My PC connects wirelessly when the PC is near the time capsule but if I move away and near the airport express I only get local connection but no internet.

    For others reading this thread.
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • Airport express and wired connection

Excuse my ignorance but I have an airport extreme and i wanted to to get a wired connection in a different location if i add an airport express will i be able to add that in the different location and then plug the ethernet cable from the express into my desktop?

if i add an airport express will i be able to add that in the different location and then plug the ethernet cable from the express into my desktop?
Yes, as long as the AirPort Express 802.11n is located where it can receive a good wireless signal from the AriPort Extreme.
    You have two options here:
    1) Configure the Express to "extend a wireless network" and it will provide more wireless coverage in the area where it is located.....and....the Ethernet port is enabled so you can connect an Ethernet device to the Express.
    2) Configure the Express to "join a wireless network". It will not provide any additional wireless coverage in this setting, but the Ethernet port can be enabled to allow an Ethernet device to connect.

  • Network Configuration Window Freezes When USB NDIS Internet Connection Sharing and Ethernet Port Are Used Simultaneously

    Current Setup:
Asrock Extreme 4 Z77 mobo with built-in Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet.  Windows 8 Pro. Intel i5-3570k (using onboard Intel 4000 HD Graphics).  RAID0- 2 OCZ Vertex 4's.
I will refer to this setup as my tower.
The Ethernet port works fine by itself.  When I use wired tethering with my Android phone (Droid 4 running on 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich), it works fine when nothing is connected into the Ethernet port in the mobo.
The issue arises when I try to connect both simultaneously.  The network configuration window in windows basically freezes and I cannot really navigate it without a ~60 second delay at best.
I would like to be able to accept the internet from my Android via a USB tether and either bridge the connection or use the internet connection sharing service to route traffic through the unused Ethernet port on the mobo (either to another computer/xbox
or more desirably a switch/router to spread to the entire home network).  I have extensively researched the issue of Windows 8 become slow and unresponsive when I attempt to do this and I have not found anyone with the exact problem.  I am able to
do both the MAC bridge miniport (bridge 2 connections) and Internet Connection Sharing though a Windows Vista (home premium) Laptop I have. The difference between the laptop and the tower I am try to do this on is the laptop has a WIFI and Ethernet connection
while the tower only has the on-board Ethernet.
Do I have all the necessary equipment to accomplish this, or do I need to buy a PCIe WIFI card?  If so could I get away with just getting a USB WIFI dongle?
Any help would be very appreciated.

I had the same problem and came here by searching.
Per Rosengren's method solved the problem, but he didn't say how to do it, so I'll try to explain step-by-step for anyone that may venture here.
Open Device Manager (right click on Computer > Manage > on the left side, under System Tools choose Device Manager)
Choose the problematic device in Network Adapters (for me it's called HTC Remote NDIS based device)
Right click on it and choose Update Driver Software...
Click Browse my computer for driver software
Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers
Uncheck the box Show compatible hardware
For the manufacturer, choose Microsoft Corporation
Now you will have two options:
    - Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device
    - Remote NDIS Compatible Device
I chose the second one and it solved the problem, but if it doesn't work you could try the other one. In my case, the driver that was being used was neither of these, but a special driver from Android SDK ADT bundle.
Pick one and click Next. If a dialog comes up, confirm by clicking Yes.
Wait a few seconds for the connection to restart. If it doesn't work, try disabling and reenabling USB tethering on the phone, or reconnect the USB cable.
I should also note that I'm using a custom Android ROM on HTC Wildfire S (unofficial Cyanogenmod). If you have a stock ROM with HTC Sense, maybe this method may not work and you'll need a proprietary HTC driver.
