Airport Express and IP address problems

I have set up an Airport Extreme to my IMac using a Motorola modem 2210 and I get the message "Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address ... " I can't connect to the internet. I don't want my computer to use wireless, but I want to be able to use other devices wireless.

This AT&T support document provides instructions for configuring the 2210 modem for use with a router from another manufacturer, which would be Apple in this case.

AirPort Utility, the application used to setup the AirPort will ask you how you want to connect the AirPort to the modem. Choose the PPPoE option and enter your AT&T user name and password as you proceed through the setup.

  • Airport Express and Time Capsule problem

We've had an AirPort express since 2006 that has always worked FINE for wireless printing and Airplay.  We just bought a new iMac and a TimeCapsule (2tb).  We replaced our netgear router with the TimeCapsule, and now we have problems.  First off, if the iMac goes to sleep when it wakes - although the connection to the Internet is intact - AirPort Utility will not be able to find any of the TWO devices from any computer in the house (MacBook, PC, and iMac).  Second, if we try AirPlay from iTunes we get this:
And from there, everything again disappears from the AirPort Utility for a while........and then comes back and works fine.  Anyone know how to get rid of this hiccup?  sometimes it takes a while to come back, and we have to turn off one of the devices and turn it back on again.
    Thanks!

So you replaced the netgear router with teh TimeCapsule, and configured the airport express to join the network correct?
The iMac is connected to a LAN port on the TimeCapsule right?
AirPlay works by first "finding," and then, establishing a secured communications link between the iTunes host and the TimeCapsule. Once this link has been established, it can then start the streaming process. Also periodically through the streaming, AirPlay checks to see if the link is still valid.

  • Airport Express and Linksys Router Problem

I have a Linksys wireless router through which I connect to the internet using my Macbook Pro without any difficulties. I recently purchased an Airport Express unit in order to connect to my stereo and play music using Itunes. However, I seem to be unable to set up the Airport Express as the Airpor Utility does not seem to be able to find it. I tried connecting it to the router using an ethernet cable and this did not seem to solve the problem? Does anyone have any recommendations to solve this problem?

Thank you for the suggestion. That allowed me to see it to configure it but once I disconnect it to restart it I the network cannot find it and it just blinks orange. I am guessing that it is because I have set the network security incorrectly. I set it at WEP 128. How do I check to see how the Linksys is configured? Or do you think it might be something else? Thank you.

  • Airport Express and a host of problems!

Hi I'm running a PB G4 10.4.6 with Airport Express v6.3 at work. I have a Canon i6500 and speakers plugged in.
Work has a Netgear wireless network.
    I have three problems.
I want to use the AE as a booster for the Netgear network but can't I only have 1 bar on my reception indicator.
The printer stops printing on large files.
    My airtunes drops out continuously.
I have trawled through 20 of pages of discussions but not found any answers that solve my problem.
My colleague on an iBook doesn't have any drop out problems with airtunes but does with the joining the network and printing.
I am sat almost on top of the AE!
I have AE at home and Airtunes has never had a problem.
I have no hair left... please help!

I believe that it is in AirPort Express, and would have to clean it. How do you do that?

You need to use the Express in router mode.. I think you are trying to use it in bridge mode.. but you need to give us a lot more details.. screenshots might help more than anything.

  • Added an AirPort express and now I have audio problems...

    Hello here,
I enjoyed to have music streamed at the same time to my two AirPort Express in two different rooms until yesterday. Today I added a new Airport Express and now I have problems to stream the audio to all the three bases at the same time: sometimes the audio signal is dropped by some AirPort randomly. Here is my configuration:
    1. One AirPort Extreme base station (main base)
    2. Three AirPort Express
    3. All the AirPort bases (4 total) are connected at the same Network through WDS (the main base is the AirPort Extreme one)
    4. All the bases are updated to the latest firmware.
Any idea? Maybe the data is too much for the network to be handled? Isn't supposed to have limits, right? Theorically I could add as many AirPort Express bases I want without to have audio drops... or not?
    Any help is very welcome.
    Thank you in advance.
    Sincerely,
    Fabrizio

An 802.11g network has maximum real-world bandwidth of about 25 Mbps; most people will get less than that. Taking into consideration the 2.1 Mbps worth of audio streaming bandwidth (3 x 700 kbps) and the significant decrease in bandwidth inherent in a WDS network as complex as yours, I'm not at all surprised that you're having dropouts.
If you could run Ethernet to one or more of the Expresses from your AEBS (using an Ethernet switch if necessary), you could increase your effective wireless bandwidth to the point where your drop-outs should cease.

  • Verizon Fios - Airport Extreme AND Airport Express drop IP Address

    Hi everyone,
I am absolutely BEGGING for help here! I am so frustrated with Verizon Fios that I can hardly take it. The scenario - the crummy Actiontec router that Verizon provided us when we got service 10 months ago shot craps recently. So, I got out my Airport Extreme to see if that would work. After 30 minutes of tech support I got it working, only to have all kinds of trouble with what they told me after FURTHER hours of tech support, was that my router was dropping the IP address.
So, knowing that I can't possibly be the only Verizon customer using an Apple router, I thought it was the Airport Extreme unit itself. I went out and got an Airport Express, and again, I am resetting my router or calling Verizon tech support at least once a day, if not more, to break the lease and get a new IP address. It's killing me. I can't live life like this.
Can ANYONE help me figure out how to get this scenario to work without having to purchase another crappy, ugly Actiontec router? I don't have FIOS TV, just internet. I can't tell you how much I would appreciate the help. It's driving me insane!!
    Thanks so much in advance.

It appears that I am in same boat. I got FIOS last October and it worked seamlessly with my Airport Extreme/Express network for months. All of a sudden, we couldn't get to the internet after returning from vacation in late August. Reset, reconfigured, and tinkered with the Airport extreme and our computers, but could not get out to internet even though we could still print and see each other over the airport network. Contacted Verizon and they told me that they do not support the airport and that we have to use their Actiontec router for Internet access. Told them that we had been using our Airport, connected to their Actiontec, to access the Internet for months seamlessly and they said that that was not something they would recommend/support and that we had to go directly through their wireless router to get Internet support. I asked if they changed something in the last week that would prevent access and they would not confirm.
We also found that my son's older desktop with 802.11b wireless USB connection and MS OS can't even get out using the Actiontec router directly. Verizon site talks to 802.11b not necessarily being supported, but we had no issues when we were routing everything through the Airport. I just don't want to invest in all kinds of new network devices when we were fine until something happened over a weekend.
I am playing around with buying the latest Airport extreme (ours is a 802.11g model) to see if that works, but Verizon refuses to acknowledge that it's a viable solution and apologized to us that we have to switch between their network router and our Airport router to do routine printing, play music, etc., but they were not open to helping us prevent running multiple networks, either.
Obviously, this is unacceptable customer service, but Verizon techs that I spoke to do not feel that they have any obligation to support us with re-establishment of connectivity that we got with our original service. It sounds from this thread that other folks were getting disconnected or can't establish connectivity over the summer. Am wondering what Verizon is doing that is causing this and who else is getting impacted. Also wondering if upgrading to the latest Airport will help.

  • Problem with Airport Express and HP PSC 1410

Please I really need help. I just bought a HP PSC 1410 (all in one) and I connected on Airport Express and I can't print trought it. I tried to connect it by USB and it work perfectly. When you want to had the printer in printer utility you can find the right driver for the printer. Rendez-vous can find it but you can not install it...
I tried many different way but it never worked.
    please help me ???

I suggest you return the PSC1410 for refund, or for credit towards the purchase of another printer. This printer will not work when connected via an Airport Express. When you purchase your next printer, chose one found on the unofficial compatibility list at http://www.efelix.co.uk/tech/1013.html
In general, all-in-one printers are poor choices for connecting via an Airport Express. Even if you do get them to work, you can only make use of their printing function.

  • Problems with Airport Express and Extreme

I have tried to set up Airport Express and Extreme.  Both proceeded normally in the Air Port Utility until the final stages.  Then it said it couldn't find the devices. When I tried again (many times), I couldn't even start the process, even though it did that the first time for both.  I'm stumped.

To set up the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) as a bridge, either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility, make these settings:
AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection tab
    Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update to apply the new settings
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    Network Name: <existing AEBSn's wireless network>
Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup >Music
    Enable AirPlay (checked)
iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    Verify Password: (optional)
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX

  • My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.
    See http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/

  • Airport Express and Firewall

I have the most recent firmware on my Airport Express and have recently installed McAfee Security Center. When the Firewall is on, I can't access my remote speakers. When it is off I can. I have:
Added the IP address of the Airport Express as a trusted IP.
Added complete access for iTunes, Bonjour, and Airport Base Station Agent
Added access to UDP port 5353 for Airport discovery
Added ROAP access for ports 5000, 6000, and 6001 (just for good measure)
Added access to ports 42000-42999 for Radio Streaming
Added access to ports 554 and 7070 for RTSP
The problem remains. Firewall off - it works. Firewall on - it doesn't work.
    Any thoughts?

Before one of the last updates, I could access external HD via Airport USB. Now I cannot. Before updates, I could not access the 2 printers via AP USB; now I can. I makes no difference when I turn off firwall. All 3 devices go into USB hub. My computer does not recognize that there is an ext HD. Any suggestions??

  • HT4587 My airport express and wireless airplay speaker are connected to wife, but airplay and homesharing are not working...what to do?

My airport express and wireless airplay speaker are connected to WIFI, but airplay and homesharing are not working...what to do?  Everything was working fine until about two weeks ago, all of the sudden airplay has disappeared from the iphone, itunes on the laptop, and the apple remote for iphone.  I have restarted the router many times, re-setup the airplay speaker and the airport express and booth are showing as being properly connected to the router when I log into the router IP address.  I was on the phone with Apple support for 30 minutes they blames verizon, got on the phone with verizon and they stated the settings were all correct and compatible with apple, got back on the phone with apple and they again are blaming verizon and trying to get me to get an airport extreme because that would fix the problem...any suggestions, please!

There are three Airport resets, soft, hard and factory default.  It would probably be beneficial if you tried each one in sequence.  Actually, you could jump to the factory default reset if you don't mind reconfiguring from scratch.

  • Airport Express and Internet Connection Sharing through XP

    Hi all,
Quick question that I'm stumbling over a little.
I'm currently staying at a relative's house using their XP desktop, so I can't change the settings too much without seeming like a discourteous guest! Their PC is set up with a USB broadband modem, and no router. What I would like to do is share that internet connection with a couple of Macbooks wirelessly.
Internet -> USB modem -> XP desktop -> LAN cable -> Airport Express -> Wireless Macbooks
I have added an Airport Express and connected it straight into the PC's LAN port. The AE is in bridge mode, so it does not distribute IP addresses. Instead, the PC is distributing IP addresses in the range 192.168.0.xxx. This is working without a problem, as no fewer than four laptops and an iPhone have been designated unique IPs without problem.
Unfortunately, I don't know where to go from there, as nothing but the XP desktop will connect to the internet. Also, curiously, the XP machine can ping everything on the network, but the devices connecting to the AE wirelessly can only ping as far as the AE, and can't 'see' the XP desktop.
I feel like I'm not far from a solution, and any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

Never mind! Figured it out myself. Turns out my relatives had McAffee running on their XP desktop. Disabled it, and everything works wonderfully.

  • AirPort Express with PC -- Setup Problems

    Hi
Just wanted to share my experience -- I wasted most of a day getting my AirPort Express network up. Problem was, the setup software assumes that you have a wireless card in your PC. If, like me, you have a simple ethernet connection to a wireless router, then the program apparently has no way of finding the AirPort Express.
After hours of fumbling with suggestions on this forum, I finally found the tech support number and we figured out that I needed to run the setup program on my laptop, which does have a wireless card.
I would STRONGLY encourage Apple to re-write its setup software to recognize this very common hardware configuration and work with it, lest more customers waste more of their time. I was THIS CLOSE to angrily returning the box. Now that it's up, I really love it, but I almost didn't get there.

I had the same problem as you did with the setup of the AX from a PC connected to the router by Ethernet. I was able to run the setup by using the "Other ..." button at the bottom of the Base Station Chooser and giving it the IP address of the AX.
Does iTunes on the PC connected to the router by Ethernet find the AX? It doesn't for me. It works great from my other 3 PCs that are connected to the network by wireless. Of course, the PC with the problem is the one across the family room from the stereo ...

  • Airport Express and DNS Issues

Recently I bought a Airport Express and i have been using it connected to a ADSL modem (modem is using PPPoE). Before that i used to have a D-Link wireless router connected to the modem, with no issues. Airport Express is working as bridge mode.
I was having trouble with my Macbook connecting some websites (with Windows computer it was ok), and I could solve it by adding DNS preferred addresses on System Preferences. Although it completely solved my home network problems, every time I go to a place where the preferred DNS is different, I have to exclude the addresses from System Preferences to internet to work fine.
Can anyone help me with that? Is it a Airport Express bug?
    Thanks for any help.

That suggests to me that you're expecting the "ADSL modem" to perform router functions. Is it capable of that? What is the brand and model of that modem? If the modem can't perform router functions, your Express shouldn't be in bridge mode.

If something on your LAN is performing proper DHCP functions, that "something" should provide your MacBook with usable DNS addresses without your having to declare them manually.
