  • Airport Express and Mac pro without Aiport Extreme

    Hi
I'm connected to my neighbors router normally on my macbook pro. Now I've bought a mac pro without airport and I've got this old Express which I've been told to work with my mac pro.
I've tried the Airport Utility to route the neighbors signal to my Airport express. After I've entered the password to the original network the airport reboots and doesn't show anywhere.
The mac pro says that I can't get connection to the net and in "system prefs" I hasn't got any IP or connection on the ethernet ports.
    I'm using leopard BTW.

Is your neighbor's wireless router another AirPort or Time Capsule? If not, you will not be able to configure both routers for a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). This would be required to enable the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) Ethernet port for your Mac Pro.

  • Airport Express and Mac G4

I have an old G4 and am trying to use Airport Express but having no luck. Just continues to be solid amber.
Am I missing additional equipment so this is an older unit?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Chances are pretty good that your local Apple Store will not stock these cards as they stopped manufacturing them some time ago. Although you can find these by doing a bit of Internet searching, I would recommend that you consider just getting a newer wireless USB adapter that support both 802.11n Wi-Fi and WPA2 wireless security. A number of vendors provide these. One example can be found at Other World Computing (OWC).

  • Airport Express and BT Homehub - how can I get it to work?

    Hello, can someone help??
I have an Airport Express and a MacBook. My only use for my Airport Express is purely to play ITunes music through my stereo via my MacBook wirelessly. Therefore I only require my Airport Express to join my current network.
I recently changed my phone and broadband network provider from Talk Talk back to BT. My Airport Express worked fine when I was with Talk Talk, I was using a Belkin wireless router for my network connection which worked without any problems. When I got my Airport Express, it was easy to set up - it joined my Talk Talk network without a hitch.
When my connection transferred to BT last week, I tried to connect up my Airport Express to my new BT Homehub. However when I went into Airport Utility my AX wasn't there. So, I read the guide on the Apple Support site and reset it to factory settings. This then seemed to make it 'appear' in Airport Utility, so I went through the process of setting it up as I did when I first bought it. When I got through to the final stage when it is 'Updated successfully and is now re-starting', the AX icon seems to disappear from the left hand side of the box and eventually I get an error message stating 'Airport Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after reinstating: The settings for this apple device have been successfully updated but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the airport menu and try again' (Incidentally, this last piece of advice doesn't work)... So, I am not sure what to do. I have tried changing the format of the WEP code I need to enter by adding " in front of the code as well as $ as is the suggestion on the Apple Support site...
Is my AX faulty? Is my BT Homehub (The 'next generation of router' as BT call it) preventing my AX from joining my network?? If anyone can help I would appreciate it, I am not very clued up on these things.... :o)
    Thanks

I have now managed to get AX working on my BT home hub. I took my second non-working unit back to Apple in Solihull and got them to test it in store. They agreed it wasn't working. They then tested another unit in store and that did work so I brought that home. It would be worth you doing the same as I got a 10% discount off my next purchase of anything at Apple for my troubles.
I set my homehub security to None (from WEP - in homehub manager/advanced/wireless/security), plugged in my AX to homehub using an ethernet cable, then ran Airport utility and after a couple of runs it finally picked it up. I was able to set the configurations I wanted and 24 hours later it is still working. I set my homehub security settings back to WEP as soon as the AX was configured.
I also installed airport utility on my son's windows laptop and that is now able to print wirelessly as well. So, finally a result.
I would suggest you take your unit back to where you bought it from and get them to test it. If they offer you another one ask for a Mac genius
to test it in store for you first. Also ask them to run through the installation procedure with you. Don't forget to ask for something for your troubles:)
    Hope that helps,

  • Itunes freezes when streaming music to airport express and to loewe air speaker at the same time?

    Hi,
    (first post )
I was recently offered a Loewe Airspeaker. I already had an Airport Express connected to a hi-fi system.
The Airport Express + hi-fi is in the living-room and the Loewe Airspeaker is in our bedroom.
Both are connected to my network via wifi.
I was trying to stream music from my iMac to both the Airport Express and the Loewe Airspeaker.
When doing this, I am able to get the same tune on both devices, but iTunes systematically freezes
=>music continues to be streamed but interface on the iMac gets the endless multicolor wheel !
Has anyone seen anything similar before, for ex. is there a similar issue when streaming music to 2 different Airport Express?
Any idea on where this is coming from?
Any idea on how to prevent this?
    Thx in advance
    Rodolphe
A few precisions on the configuration:
the iTunes library and corresponding music are located on a Mac Mini configured as a media server.
The iMac connects to the mac mini via wifi (shared folder). Home network is organized via an Airport Extreme.
Both computers run Mac OS 10.7.2 Lion and are up to date.

Well, repying to my own post... Might have found the solution: I tried to do the same with a Macbook Pro 2010 using the very same setup. And it worked perfectly! No freeze, no nothing.
    One explanation I see:
my iMac is dating back to May 2007, a Core 2 Duo 2,16Ghz with 2 Go of RAM.
So the computer's characteristics (or the Wifi component or the combination of all of this) might be not robust enough to allow streaming to those 2 devices...
    Anyone's got anything to add?

  • I was told at the Apple store that I could simply plug in ( electric power) the Airport Express and it would find my wireless network. I hoped to use it as a way to play music from my iphone. I do not use other Apple routers etc,

The Airport Express is not finding my wireless network. I do not have any of the devices listed below. I have a Belkin wireless router. Can I still use Airport Express ( without plugging an ethernet cable into it) ? Any ideas for how to make it find my network ? It is sitting next to the wireless router-so is in range.
If you already have a wireless network in your home and want to extend its range, AirPort Express can help. Just place it in range of your primary base station — an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express — and near the area where you want your wireless connection. Launch the easy-to-use AirPort Utility app on your iOS device or Mac, and you’re mere minutes away from long-range Wi-Fi enjoyment.

Hi - you can do what you want to do with AirPlay from your iPhone - but unfortunately it is not as easy as the people in the Apple store told you - your first problem is that you have a non Apple router - you cannot extend a non Apple router wirelessly with the Express - you can only join the network and connect an ethernet device to it - you can however connect via ethernet and have it create a wireless network of its' own - you can set this up from your iPhone or the XP - but this is a complicated setup and would involve many different discussion areas of this forum - therefore I would suggest that you use your 90 days of support and consult directly with Apple to do this - go to this link - http://www.apple.com/support/contact/

  • I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. any soln ?

I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing wireless network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. I am using a set of speakers from kenwood connected to the airport express. The operating system on my macbook is mac os X 10.5.8. i am sure it is not a problem of streaming music online because i have even tried playing music which are stored in my macbook.
Is there any problem with the setting in itunes or quicktime ? Kindly reply...... I am waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Thank you a lot in advance.

I am shocked to have found this same AX audio dropout problem starting TODAY, every few seconds the audio just drops for a couple seconds and then resumes:  Latest software versions of everything.  No iPad, iPhone or Touch.  Internet hardwired to D-Link DES1105 (1000baseT Switch) hardwired to new 80211N AX, AX optical to stereo, AX Wi-Fi internet to basic 1st-gen MacBook operating at 80211G, and an older 'G' AX extender at the far end of the house, away from all this.  The MacBook streaming iTunes is usually 12 feet from AX.  I've used this setup for years of trouble-free AirTunes / Airplay until today.  Today I also found 2 very reliable fixes and 1 way to force a dropout, but first, I read some posts and tried ALL following settings one-at-a-time and restored them ALL because NONE of them helped:  Turned off IPV6.  Streamed to multiple speakers 'Computer' and 'AX' (restored to just AX).  Turned off 'Ask to Join new (WiFi) Networks'.  Turned off Bluetooth (can't live without Magic Trackpad, so glad that wasn't it).  Here's my discoveries:  Lo and behold, each time I click the Airport icon in the Menu (you know it shows you've got 4 bars from AX) when the status switches to 'Looking for Networks' for a second it CAUSES the AX audio to drop out for a couple seconds (it never did that before today.)  iTunes still playing, streaming, AX laser still lit, but the 'PCM' light on stereo and the sound GOES OUT EVERY time I click the Airport icon in the menubar, just like the regular, annoying dropouts.  So, to reduce traffic I quit Safari (3 tabs, no streaming, just Gmail, Google, and Netflix browsing).  Lo and behold, the dropouts stopped altogether.  No other Web apps going (not iTunes Store, Genius, Ping, nothing), so I launched Chrome to the same 3 tabs and the dropouts HAVE NOT RETURNED.  That's right, not only did simply QUITTING SAFARI cure it, and Chrome doesn't contribute to it, but I can demonstrate it just by forcing my Airport to re-scan.  Works for me, written using Chrome.  The other reliable fix is to hardwire MacBook to the Switch.  This is obviously not ideal, but Airplay audio doesn't drop out over Ethernet.  Also, in all my tests, it made no difference whether iTunes did the streaming, or Airfoil did.

  • Airport express and apple tv, airport express and apple tv

    Hi
Just wandering if this is possible.
I was wandering if I could set up a wireless network with an airport express and then connect the apple tv to it so I could show movies etc via my MAC while travelling.
Note there would be no internet connection involved.
I believe you can set up the 'no internet' wirelss net work with the AE, just not sure you could connect the the Apple TV to it.
May be a question for different forum, sorry if it is,
    Thanks in advance,
    Rich

I can play videos from the Apple Videos app and the from Photos app with the video going to the monitor and the audio through the speakers attached to the Airport Express.
but as soon as I try to do it with Keynote, no luck. I have to play videos in Keynote without sound.
what can I do to fix that?

  • Airport express problem - mac newbie!

hey all. got my macbook pro this morning and boy is this thing fast!!! no noticible whine or buzz either. This is my first mac so i'm not quite sure what everything does yet!
I bought an airport express unit with my laptop, i ran the CD and then used airport assistant but i can't seem to get it to stop flashing amber. The connection is working fine (i am currently connected directly over ethernet). I've ran airport assistant 3 times now and the light just stays flashing on amber. I'm in the UK and connected to NTL, could someone post me a step by step guide of how to sort this out.
    Thanks!
    Sam

    Hi Brett
I too am in the UK and use NTL, got my MacBookPro on monday this week and have Airport Express and mine works fine - it was amber until I pulled the power supply from my NTL box, leave for a minute then reconnect and reboot, it should (hopefully) turn green after flashing amber for a bit.
    Cheers

  • Airport Express and WRT54G v8

    Airport express firmware: v6.3
    WRT54G: v8
    I'm unable to get my Airport Express to join my existing wireless network in Client mode. I've been able to get it to join other wireless networks using WPA, but with my new WRT54G v8 I haven't succeeded;
    - Has anyone got an Airport Express to join a WRT54G v8 wireless network?
    - Does the Airport Express support WPA2 when joining a non-Apple 802.11g network? It just shows WPA on the drop-down box for me.
    - Is the channel selection important?
    - For WPA, I've previously had to enter a $ before my ASCII-format password. Is that true in general for WPA and WPA2?
Having owned this Airport Express for 4 yrs, I have to say I'm dismayed by the level of frustration I've had with it, but I'm locked into it because I used Itunes.

I have the exact same problem. I purchased the airport express yesterday, and trying to hook it up in client mode, wirelessly to the wrt54g to be a print server. I set it up with the ethernet patch cord attached to the airport express and the wrt54g. It gets set up great and I can print and attach my clients (2 windows and 1 mac) wirelessly to the wrt54g network. If I leave the ethernet connected within 5 minutes my wireless network slows to a crawl and then stops traffic. If I disconnect the ethernet cable instantly the network returns to normal speed. But the airport express is no longer reachable. Granted it doesn't have the same IP and has to re-establish connection. However, it never re-establishes and flashes amber. Seems like it has to be security related as it seems to connect OK when the ethernet cord is attached.
I assume that to set the airport express up in client mode that the first configuration has to be made with the ethernet cord attached. Then when it resets itself to re-read the new configuration that I am supposed to unhook the ethernet cord. As it should be talking to the wrt54g through the wireless connection rather then the hard ethernet connection.
The setup steps I go through are:
    - push the hard reset to get to factory settings
    - connect ethernet patch cord from airport express to wrt54g
    - bring up airport utility on macbook pro
    - airport is found and press continue
    - create a password - continue
    - select I have a network - continue
    - select join the network wirelessly - continue
    - select my network from wrt54g
    - select security
--I have tried the 40bit with the wrt54g 64bit WEP
--I have tried 128bit WEP on both
---neither works...if I try something else I need details on how to set it up
    - continue and wait for when it restarts....
    - If I leave the ethernet cord in, and switch back to the wrt54g wireless network, the airport express shows up in the airport utility very quickly. and seems to work for a while before taking my wireless network down.
    - If I remove the ethernet cord and switch the macbook over to the wrt54g wireless network, the airport express never shows up in the airport utility and the airport express flashes amber. From the manual, this says there is connectivity issues. And through process of elimination, looks like the airport express can't get passed the security with the wrt54g.
So, I too, look for assistance.
PS. I have had the wrt54g for a couple of years and have not upgraded firmware so if that is necessary then I can do that.
PSS. At the very first airport express setup there was a new firmware loaded. Does this have to be re-applied if the airport express is hard reset (ie, paper clip in the reset hole for 10 seconds)?

  • Airport Express and Flashing Yellow - Please Help!

I just purchased an Airport Express and cannot get anything the status indicator to flash anything other than a yellow. I am working on a Win 7 64 bit platform and my router is Netgear N600 (model WNDR3700). The only changes I made to the router is via its utility to enter the Airport ID MAC address into the Netgears "Wireless Acces List". I deperately need input on what I might be doing wrong or need to do to my router's setup. Below are what I have tried and status info:
    What I have tried:
    1) Entered the AIrport's MAC address into my Netgear Router's "Wireless Access List", as well as the Ether ID (out of desperation).
    2) Installed on my PC the latest version of the Airport Utility  (5.5.3).
    3) Plugged the Airport directly in port 4 of my Netgeat Router.
    4) Changed ethernet cables.
    5) Reset the Airport.
    6) Rebooted the Netgear and my PC.
    7) Plugged the ethernet cable from the modem directly into the Airport.
    Info:
    1) When the Airport is first turned on (ethernet is already plugged in), the status light turns solid greem, then goes to solid yellow for a bit, and then immediately goes to flashing yellow (approx 2 seconds between flashes) and stays that way.
    2) then If I run my Advanced IP Scanner if shows the Airport, an IP of 192.168.1.20, the Airport's ethernet MAC address. The status shows "Ok".
    3) If I unplug the Airport and click rescan on the IP Scanner the device remains present but the status is changed to "Dead".
Despite what I tried I get only get the yellow flashing light? Do I have a bad Airport Express or is this a failure on my part to properly set up the Netgear? Thanks in advance for any help offered.

The AirPort Express flashing yellow means it it not receiving a valid IP address. This is issued by your router.
I recommend disabling your Netgear's "Wireless Access List" until you get it resolved.
One thing that you did not mention is using AirPort Utility. You need to configure the Express using AirPort Utility for Windows. If you don't have that click here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1391
Read about designing AirPort Networks here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/designing_airport_networks_10.5-windows.pdf
A new Express creates an unprotected wireless network named "Apple Network xxxxx". You need to disconnect from your existing network and connect to that network in order for AirPort Utility to communicate with the Express. Most likely you will have to temporarily disable any and all anti-virus / firewall / security software running on your Windows to do this. If you don't see that network you will not get anywhere.
When you are finished configuring the Express in AirPort Utility, including addressing any unresolved conflicts it may report, click the button to restart it. AirPort Utility will say "the Express is now restarting" but the temporary network that it created for you to configure it will cease to exist, so just close the window. Reconnect to your usual wireless network which will now welcome the Express as a member.
After it restarts the Express should show a happy green light.
When you are finished re-enable all your Windows firewalls and AV software.

  • Solved: AirPort Express and AirTunes Audio Distortion Connected to a Stereo

*The problem*: Terrible sound distortion while using AirPort Express AirTunes features. Even when nothing was plugged in, there would be a buzzing noise.
*The setup*: AirPort Express connected via 3.5mm stereo jack to a pair of computer stereo speakers. Note: This post does not apply to you if you are using an optical Toslink between the AirPort Express and your speakers. iTunes installed on a Mac. AirTunes setup to allow music to stream wirelessly to AirPort Express and speakers.
*The solution*: The AirPort Express needs to be grounded. The included AC tip is only two prong. In the US, the third prong (round) is used for grounding.
Therefore you just need to attach the three prong AC tip. This is not included with the AirPort Express. What you need is the Apple Power Extension Cord which has a 3 prong tip.
    Example:
    http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Extension-Apple-PowerBook-Notebook/dp/B002V4XKRS
This is the same extension cord that comes with most Apple notebooks.
    Hope this helps!

    Bob,
This is really simple so no instructions are necessary.
Plug in the new Express when you get it and have it "Join the existing network"...
Give the iTunes Music section a name like "Front Room Stereo" and that's it...
Plug the stereo into the Express and select it in iTunes for playing music.

  • Airport Express and USB Hard drive and extremely slow performance

    HI Guys,
I seem to having a lot of trouble with an Airport express and a Lacie 1TB drive. While I have solved several problems by updating firmware and enabling journalling on the Lacie, I am still having problems with extremely slow performance with my macbook, particularly using itunes and Firefox.
Any ideas and any further information needed?

    HI,
I formatted it using the Lacie setup program for Mac and later enabled it for journalling using Disk utility. This seemed to solve a lot of the recognition problems I was having, however the I-Tunes and firefox performance is still atrocious. If I do Need to completely reformat it using Disk Utility, will I lose my files on the disk now?
not if you move them to a temporary location before you start.
yes, you are better of formatting the drive with DU.

  • Airport Express and T1?

    Hi there,
This is my fist post and I'll really thanks to anyone who can give the solution to my problem.
I use to used my DSL connection at home throug my Airport Express and I don't have any problem, I surf, got emails, etc.; and I also hook my airport express to several hotel's room without any problem, but very often happens that I hook the cord to the Airport, the light is green, my powerbook 'see' the airport but I can't get Internet, but it's works direct with the cord. Why I can get Internet access with the cord but not with the Airport Express?
It is maybe because I trying to plug into a T1 connection? T1 is different from DSL? What I should do?
    Thanks for your help
