Airport express and Negear adsl router

I have a wi-fi netgear dg834g adsl router, which is connected to internet; my imac has not an airport card so it connects to the router with the ethernet port. Now, I have the airport express: what i'd like to do, is to connect my playstation (or pc) to the ethernet port of the airport express, but in another room. The poin is, Airport as to act as Wds and i know my router doesn't support it: but, if I buy another adsl router, or I add another access point to my router which supports wds, will it work? Cause on Apple support it seems you have to youse an airport base station only to do that. That would be crazy!

This is in the faq:
# Question: Can AirPort Express be used for a Wireless Distribution System (WDS)?
Answer: Yes. AirPort Express can be a WDS main, remote, or relay station. It can function as a WDS main whether or not you are using it as a router to share your Internet connection (NAT).
# Question: Can networkable game consoles and digital video recorders join my network via AirPort Express?
Answer: Yes, if you have the proper network adapters for your devices and have set them up properly. They can connect wirelessly when AirPort Express is your only base station or when it's in WDS mode. They can connect via wire when AirPort Express is a WDS remote (the reason for this is described in the next question). They cannot connect either way when AirPort Express is in client mode.
# Question: Since AirPort Express only has one Ethernet port, does it act as a LAN port, WAN port, or both?
Answer: Depending on how you have it set up, the Ethernet port can function as a LAN port (defined as either simple bridging or sharing your Internet connection via network address translation) or a WAN port (connecting to your broadband Internet service provider or upstream router). However, it never acts as both simultaneously in the way that the original AirPort Base Station (Graphite) can. When the AirPort Express is using network address translation, the Ethernet port acts as a WAN port. When it is set up as a WDS remote station, it can act as a LAN port. Assuming that your Internet service provider only gives you one IP address (the most common scenario for homes), this means that AirPort Express can only accommodate wired clients when acting as a WDS remote base station or bridge. Therefore, if you need to support wired clients and only want to get one base station (or router, as it's the routing capacity of AirPort Express that is relevant here), you should get the AirPort Extreme Base Station instead.
so maybe i'm right, but I want to be sure

  • Airport Express and Fios Actiontec router compatible?

I have multiple Airport Expresses and an Airport Extreme.  Verion FIOS supplied it own Actiontec router which hooks into their Optical Network Terminal.  Since the Actiontec router took over, I've removed the Airport Extreme and the Airport Expresses work only to receive iTunes music from my computers. The Expresses do not extend the WiFi signal anymore.  The Actontec router is powerful but at the far end of the house, I no longer get a WiFi signal.  Previously with my Extreme and Expresses, I could extend the signal wherever I needed it.
I wonder if I can plug my Extreme into a hardwired LAN terminal from the router and use it to create its own WiFi network in the areas of the house where there is no signal?

I wonder if I can plug my Extreme into a hardwired LAN terminal from the router and use it to create its own WiFi network in the areas of the house where there is no signal?
Yes, this is possible if the AirPort Extreme stays permanently connected using an Ethernet cable.
If you want to create one "big" network, use the same wireless network name and password on the AirPort Extreme that you use on the Actiontec router. Setup the AirPort Extreme to "create a wireless network". The Extreme must be in Bridge Mode to do this.
If you configure the AirPort Extreme with a different wireless network name, then you will need to log on to that network separately each time that you move your computer close to the AirPort Extreme.....then log back on again to the Actiontec when the computer moves back near that router.
If the AirPort Express devices are located where they can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme....and you need even more wireless coverage.....,the Expresses could be reconfigured to "extend" the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme like you were doing before.

  • Airport Express and D-link router

I have a new Airport Express and a D-link DI-524 wireless router which I wish to use to both extend my wireless network and connect my Xbox 360 wirelessly as it is not near my base station and I don't want to wire through my house.
Could anyone please give tips on how I should do this? Should I use the Airport as the base station or the router? How can I get my Xbox to see the internet?
Your help will be muchly appreciated!

danbowles, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry but that is not possible. The Ethernet port on the AirPort Express (AX) is ONLY activated if it is connected wirelessly using WDS. The D-Link router does not support Apple's WDS.

  • Airport Express and Cisco E1000 router?

Okay so right now i am using my airport express as my primary router can i use it to extend my cisco E1000 router if i plug back my old Cisco E1000 router if i can how do i do it? Please help.

You can effectively extend the Cisco's wireless network by creating a roaming network with both routers. Note that this would require that both routers be interconnected by Ethernet. Since the Express will perform a new role, be sure to perform a "factory default" reset on it so that it will be in its "out-of-the-box" configuration.

  • Airport express and co-axial router

We just got a new cisco router which works off the spilt co-ax cable.  My iMac can detect the new network and runs fine on it. But I can't get airport express to recognise the new network.  Do I need to physically connect airport express to the router in order to replace it as the default wi-fi network?  Airport express was originally set up to run off a different wireless router (which is also still running - yes 2 networks in the house).  Thanks

The 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can provide Internet access in one of three ways:
By being directly connected by Ethernet to an Internet modem or gateway.
By being wirelessly connected to another AirPort or Time Capsule.
By being wirelessly connected to a non-Apple router. Note: With this option, the AXn is only able to supply Internet connectivity via its Ethernet port.

  • Airport Express and 3rd Party Router

I have a first generation Airport Express that I've been using for the past few years to stream music wirelessly to my stereo via my Belkin 54g router. At first I could not get the Airport Express to work with the Belkin Router but finally after posting on this discussion board, someone told me how to make it work.
Well, I finally decided to buy a new router with the N-protocol (Linksys E2000) and I cannot get it to recognize the Airport Express at all, even when I hook it up via ethernet cable. I cannot remember the steps I went through to get the Belkin router to work with the Airport Express. I hope someone can help me so I can get it working again.
    Thanks,
    Mark Brandenburg

    Mark,
You need to "hard reset" the AirPort Express by holding in the reset button until the amber light begins to blink more quickly, hold another 3-4 seconds when you see this, then release the reset button.
Open AirPort Utility to reconfigure your AirPort Express to "Join" your Linksys wireless network. The AirPort Express should "see" the name of the Linksys network during the configuration, but the hard part is knowing exactly what type of wireless security that your Linksys router is using.
You must enter a matching setting on the AirPort Express to get it to "join" the network correctly, so you may need to check the settings on your Linksys router first if you are not sure of the exact security setting that it is using.
The other thing you need to check is to make sure that the Linksys is broadcasting a compatible signal so your older "g" AirPort Express will be able to join the network. If the Linksys produces an "n only" wireless network, the AirPort Express will not be able to join the network since it is a "g" device.

  • I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work?

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

  • I have the airport express as router can I buy the new airport express and use my old airport to extend my net?

I have the airport express as router can I buy the new airport express and extend my net?

Things can get confusing pretty quickly since there are 3 different versions of the AirPort Express.
If by "old", you mean you have Model No A1084 or A1088 AirPort Express (look at the label on the side of the device for the Model No), it cannot be used with the "Extend a wireless network" feature of other newer Apple routers.
If your AirPort Extreme is "square" shaped with rounded corners, then the "old" AirPort Express will not work with your AirPort Extreme using the "Extend a wireless network" settings.
You could use a "previous version" AirPort Express, Model No A1264 to "Extend", or the "new" AirPort Express, Model No A1392, for that purpose.
If your AirPort Extreme is a simultaneous dual band product, then the "new" Express would be able to "extend" both bands.  The "previous" AirPort Express (Model A1264) would be able to extend only one band, since it is not a dual band device.

  • I just hooked up a airport express as my new router and now I cant play videos on my imac or ipad. PLEASE HELP.

I just hooked a new airport express and now I cant play videos on my imac or ipad. I do have a sprint airave hooked up to the system. I dont know if i have all the cables hooked up right but everything works except playing videos on either device. PLEASE HELP. Thank you

Yea rudegar its weird. I dont have sound either. I have read to put airave behind router but I cant find anywhere how to hook all the wires up. I have 2 ports in the back of the airport express(1 wan and 1 ethernet), 1 port on my modem and 3 ports on the airave(wan and 2 lan). I dont know which cable goes where, wan ,lan, ethernet, back of computer etc. Im an idiot when it comes to all this stuff but Im sure its simple fix but obviously not for me. I read people put modem to router to airave but dont say which port to put them in.

  • Is is possible to use a netgear wireless router to share a cable internet connection between an airport express and a Sony BD player?

    Hi,
I have a couple of netgear wireless routers (WGR614, WPN824 v3) as well as a Belkin wireless router (F5D8233-4v3) lying around, and was wondering if it is possible to use any of these to share the internet feed from a cable modem to both an airport express and a Sony Blu-Ray Player?  I connected the WPN824 router between the cable modem and the airport express but the airport express will only give an orange light then as if it does not have internet access.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Many thanks.

What you are basically attempting to do is extend the Belkin router with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) via a wireless connection between them. This method is known as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Unfortunately, WDS is not a standard and router manufacturers implemented, in most part, to only work with their products ... so it will be very unlikely that you can create a WDS between your Belkin and the AX. There have been a few Belkin model that have been updated by third-party firmware that support WDS, but the models you listed are not any of them.

  • WDS setup with Airport Express and other(non-Apple) wireless router

    Hi,
I am trying to configure a wireless network with one airport express and one Planex Wireless access point. Can anyone please point me to the settings to be made for such a scenario? I can use either of them as the main WDS device, and have a (wired)router provided by the ISP in the network.(so total 3 devices : airport, planex a/p , ISP router)
    Thanks.

I'm having the same problem, both with a Linksys WRVS4400Nv2, and a WRT54G. I've not put much effort into the WRT, but the WRVS was such a pain that I don't think I can get it to work at all.
The WRT doesn't have a section on WDS, but I've read that it's supported anyways, and nothing needs to be enabled on it. Is there a good step-by-step available here or elsewhere that uses close to the same router and Airport Express units, on the latest Airport setup software?
Basically, I'm trying to set this up for a guy in an ~8000 sq. foot house so he has wireless throughout it, and he wants itunes streaming from the AX. Has anyone done this?

  • HT4437 can i have more than one apple tv at different locations by ethernet on the same router  thinking of dumping the airport express and hard wiring an apple tv if this is possible

can two apple tv's be used on the same network and router they would be in different locations one inside the house and one for an outside system?  may dump the airport express and go to ethernet wired direct to each apple tv from same router..

Welcome to the Apple Community da dad.
Yes you can connect multiple Apple TV's by ethernet.
What do you mean by outside.

  • Time Capsule, Airport Express and Xbox Live

Recently I went out and bought a Time Capsule 1TB hoping to extend my wireless network. I knew that Apple products wouldn't usually help extend a DLINK network so it came as no surprise when I could not extend my DLINK network. My solution was to buy a new Airport Express, disable the wifi on the DLINK router and extend the Airport Expresses network via the Time Capsule.
The current situation is: DLINK <-> Ethernet <-> Airport Express Wireless Time Capsule <-> Ethernet <-> Xbox360
The issue is the Time Capsule as far as I can see. For apparently no reason it will change from a solid green status light to a flashing amber status light. Signing my Xbox into Xbox Live seems to be a trigger, but the Time Capsule goes amber even when the Xbox isnt on at all. When it does change to flashing amber I am no longer able to detect it within Airport Utility and as such am unable to diagnose the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Here it works fine. I have a Time Capsule connected to my ADSL modem. I had to buy an all new Airport Express 802.11n, though, because my old AE could not extend my network.
On an all 802.11n setup you just check the "Allow this network to be extended" on the master (Time Capsule), and choose "Extend a wireless network" on the remotes.
The X-Box is connected with an Ethernet cable to the Airport Express, and connection to X-Box Live works fine.
    Good luck!

  • AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, and Xbox 360

Perhaps someone's already posted a question about this, but I couldn't find a specific post that addressed my questions. I recently bought an Xbox for my stepson and hope to use an AirPort Express to connect it to my home network, which is built around an AirPort Extreme Base Station. Anyone out there done this? Can anyone share how they set theirs up?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi.
I set up the same configuration proposed by Henry.
My Airport Extreme is cabled to the Netgear ADSL Router. Airport Express is configured in WDS mode together with Airport Extreme and both are in bridge mode (DHCP disabled). Then, the Xbox 360 is connected with ethernet cable to the Airport Express. Finally, I set up the Airport express and extreme IP address as static. In this way, I have only one wireless network and the IP address is given by the Netgear Router for all hosts (Xbox 360 too), other than Airport base stations, which are always reachable with their static IP address.
I hope this description will be helpful.
    Bye,
    Francesco
