Airport Express and Range Extenders and Access points.

My setup is as follows
Main wireless router is a Dlink DIR-635, with SSID 'id1'
A Edimax range extender, with SSID 'id2'
A small network with a PC and a mediaplayer connected to a Jensen router acting as a switch. This network is connected to the wireless network with SSID 'id1'
through a TP-Link access point.
I want to stream music from my PCs and Ipad to the Express using Airplay.
The 'id2' network has the best signal in the room where I want the Express.
Connected the Express to this network, but it didn't show up as an available speaker neither on the Ipad nor on my PCs.
Connected the Express to the other network 'id1'. Now it shows up on my Ipad and a portabel PC. Both connected to network with SSID 'id2'.
But the PC connected to the wireless network through the TP-link, is still unable to find the Express.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
What protocoll does Airplay use? Does the Express send any broadcast messages to inform other devices that is is in the network?
Seems to me that the Airplay protocoll is filtered by the extender and the access point.
Any hints will be appreciated.

If you are asking about "extending" or "repeating" the wireless signal, you will need both an Apple main router and an Apple extending device.
The AirPort Express (and other Apple routers) can only "extend" a wireless signal from another Apple router.

  • Airport Express - using range extender and Ethernet at the same time?

So, I am thinking of buying an Airport Express. I am would be using it to extend the range (wirelessly) of my current Wi-Fi and also use the Ethernet ports on the back to connect my DVD player (so I can use the Internet-enabled apps on it). My question is whether the Airport Express can extend the range of my Wi-Fi as well as provide an internet connection to my DVD player simultaesnously.
My current setup in my house is:
    - A wireless modem from my ISP (www.telenet.be)
    - A Cisco range extender - however, this one often drops the connection so the Airport Express would be a replacement for this.
The current Cisco range extender is plugged in near my TV and it picks up the wireless connection from my ISP modem and extends it as well as being connected to the DVD player. However, I am tired of losing the connection so I thinking of buying an Airport Express.
I have no other Apple network devices (Airport Extreme, Airport Time Capsule, etc.)
    Can you help me out?

No, Apple products will only wirelessly extend the signal from other Apple products.
Another way of saying the same thing is that you must have two Apple AirPort routers if you want to extend the signal wirelessly.

  • Airport express base station as Wireless Access Point?

I purchased the Airport Express base station with the intent of providing wi-fi for my office.  There is already a router with the radio turned off serving as a network switch.  Can I add the Airport express as a wireless access point?

Sorry, I do not have an iOS device handy to try to figure out what is going wrong. Having tried this in the past though, I have noticed that AirPort Utility for iOS tries to analyze the connection and then configure things automatically.
Unfortunately, it does not always choose the correct settings and then it is necessary to look for a way to manually configure things.
I may be able to use my wife's iPad later today. Please confirm that you are connecting an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the router or switch to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express so that I can set things up exactly the same way here and work on a manual procedure for the configuration.

  • Airport Express base station, G3 and G4

Is it possible to use the Aiport Express base station to share the internet (DSL with only one ethernet jack) with an iBook G4 (has airport extreme) and a G3 (want to stay wired on this one)? Sorry if this has already been posted.

The Ethernet cable that goes to the Internet needs to have only Internet traffic on it. If it also has local Mac-to-Mac traffic on it, your ISP will not be happy with you.
The way you assure that only Internet traffic is on that Ethernet cable is with the function of a Router/Gateway. Today, you are using the Router function built into the AirPort Express.
You could turn off that function in the AirPort Express and use the AirPort Express as only a Wireless Access Point. That would require you to get some other box (that has at least two Ethernet ports) to do the Router function. I think the cost of doing that would be under US$50.
Local wiring would come off the "new" router -- one cable to G3; one cable to Airport Express (now set up as a wireless access point); two cables for future expansion.
Alternatively, you could get a "gaming adapter" (Ethernet to Wireless) for a Mac (like your G3) running 10.2 or later. I think that solution might cost more, maybe US$75?

  • Airport Express to extend network and stream music at the same time?

Hi. I have an Airport Extreme base station (primary wireless access point) and an Airport Express. Currently I connect my Hi-Fi to the Airport Express and stream music from iTunes, but I would like to also make use of its Ethernet port to connect other wired devices to my network. Is this possible; can it be used for both simultaneously? I've tried various configurations but not managed to achieve this.

    Welcome to the discussions!
If you have an AirPort Extreme(n) and AirPort Express(n), the ethernet port for the Express will be active if you "Enable ethernet client" during setup using AirPort Utility.
It sounds like you have either the "g" version of the Extreme or Express or both. Both devices must be "n" capable to use this option. If you don't see an option on the Wireless setup page of the Express to "Enable ethernet client", you have a "g" Express and this function is not available with your device.

  • Airport Express 801.11b/g and the neverending, unconfigurable blinking amber light

Gather round and let me tell you a tale. Once upon a time I bought an airport express 801.11b/g and I was very happy to use it for airtunes, extending a wi-fi network and the wireless printing capabilities. One day, it beagn flashing a scaaaary amber light. The base station stopped showing up in my airport utility 5.6 as well. The only way to get it to show up, was to hard reset it, and lose all the configurations I once enjoyed happily. After the hard reset, It would show up in the utility, and I would reconfigure it to do all its cool things it once did, and it would restart. But sadly, after restarting the blinking amber light came on a again. It would also not show up in the utility unless I hard reset it again, and the same thing happened over and over and over until I felt like pulling my hair out.
I decided to get another airport express a few months later, ultimately deciding that the unit must have just been defective. Bad luck. But - the second unit literally went through the SAME EXACT THING. Worked for a while, then onto the blinking amber light- hard reset- reconfigure-blinking amber light thing. Over and over and over. Just like the first one. The end.
So - either Im missing something totally fundamental or I had the misfortune of getting two defective units in a row. Both were bought used from different places, and worked "fine" for previous owners. Am I corrupting these things or what?
I have spent literally hours trying all the resets, configuring "workarounds" and nothing works. For both of them.
What do I do with these two devices? I don't need two shiny white paperweights.
    Please advise,
    Thanks.

Yes. It seems an integral part of the set up process though, you don't have to seperately configure the airport do you?
My wireless security is WPA/WPA2 Personal. When I go through the standard network set up, it automatically enters my wireless security settings. So it doesn't really seem to give an option to specifically set that option on the airport if that makes sense?
I did go through maunual mode to try that with the same result:
If I'm using the airports own network and connect to the wifi, no security, then I'm getting airtunes from my macbook. Of course this means it's plugged into my router via ethernet which isn't any use to me as I want it in my kitchen, and would rather not limit my apple devices to b/g when I have a decent N router, and would also mean running a huge ethernet cable across my house!
The seller has said it worked for him but he's not up to scratch on his tech, so if I'm sure it's malfunctioning he'll refund. Obviously this is great news and he seems like a very nice guy so I want to be certain it's not me malfunctioning before I send it back!
So in summary I have it functioning on it's OWN network:
Wireless mode: Create a wireless network
Wireless network name: Apple Network XXXXXX
    etc
Once 'wireless mode' is switched from 'create a wireless network' to 'join a wireless network' I select my current WiFi, security and password, checked the TCP/IP settings all good. Select 'Update'. Get the warning that device and network will be temporarily unavailable am I sure I want to continue. Then it goes through the same as before, says it's succesful, restarts to flashing amber with no way of accessing it unless I hard reset.
Thanks for the help so far...

  • Airport Express Password for mac and windows

i have airport express in my office and i have both windows laptops and mac's, i tried to setup a password for the airport and it succeed but the problem when i try to access the airport from windows it ask for password and i use my correct password but unable to connect on it. i am using 12 digital # for the password.
now i have removed the password and all the machines able to connect even the other companies are sharing my internet
is there any way to encrypt the airport? and i want each machine to be asked for the password.
    thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
One of the advantages of OS X is it has it's own password manager called Keychain Access. Unfortunately Windows doesn't have an equivalent so you have to rely on third parts applications like Roboform. To locate Keychain Access simply click Command-Spacebar and type Keychain Access and Spotlight will locate it.
There is another tool you can try that has gotten pretty good reviews, it is:
    http://download.cnet.com/1Password/3000-18501_4-95581.html
I'm not aware of any third parts apps that work on both Windows and OS X so you may be forced to use two solutions.

  • On my second Airport Express in 3 months and still doesn't work!

I bought an airport express 3 months ago and it worked perfectly just up until a few days ago. I went thru all the possible fixes and hard resets, changed cables, re-located the airport etc. And all failed leaving me with a blinking amber light. I went to the store that I bought the airport from and they tried hooking it up on their system and they got the same result. They told me I would have to go thru apple to get it looked over. I have a home business and needed this unit to work that day as I depend on the internet. So I said screw it and bought another airport express, got it back to the office and guess what? Yup it also doesn't work either. So what can I derive from this, is it my set up? It worked without any changes to the settings for three months. Is it the unit? It doesn't work in my office or at the shop I bought it from. Any suggestions before I buy another brand.

Ok here is what I suggest:
    1. Reset the ISP modem, most can be done by simply pulling the power on the unit and waiting about 10 seconds then plug back in
    2. Reset the Express to factory defaults:
Use pen or paper clip to press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds.
    3. Open Airport Utility (Do not use the assistant at this time) and set up with the following settings.
    Airport
    Base Station Tab
    - keep all defaults
    Wireless Tab
Wireless Mode - Create a wireless Network and keep all else default
    -Keep all others default
    Access Tab
MAC Address Access Control - Not Enabled
    Internet
    Internet Connection Tab
    Connect Using - Ethernet
    Configure IPv4 - Using DHCP
    Ethernet WAN Port - Automatic
Connection Sharing - Share a public IP Address
    DHCP Tab
DHCP Beginning Address - 172.16.1.200 These addresses are simply examples and default.
    DHCP Ending Address - 172.16.1.210
    -Keep all others default
    NAT Tab
    -Keep all defaults
Do not set up any security options at this time, wait until you get the Express operating then you can start to set up WEP, WPA etc. Security
Once you have all these settings configured the press update and wait for the Express to reboot. If you still have a Blinking Orange light then I recommend contacting the ISP and make sure that they have the Expresses MAC address in the data base. Most ISP's will require the MAC address of the unit they are giving an IP address to.
Or you can try to reset the Express by unplugging the Express then while using a pen or paper clip press and hold the reset button while you plug the Express into the AC outlet. Then try setting up the configuration as above.

  • Airport Express: Extend a network and do Airtunes at the same time?

Hi, I'm trying to organize the people in my apartment building to share an internet connection wirelessly.
The connection is originating from a friend's apartment; he has a Linksys router, probably "g" flavor.
We're going to put one Airport Express in a neighbor's apartment to extend that.
I have an Airport Express connected to my stereo which I use only for Airtunes.
So I'm wondering: can I connect my Airport Express to this network and extend it and ALSO use it for Airtunes?
Also: Can I prevent my neighbors from seeing my Airport Express for Airtunes purposes? IE, I don't want my stereo to show up in the "multiple speakers" drop down of iTunes for other people connecting to the network...
Hope there's a way to work this out...

can I connect my Airport Express to this network and extend it and ALSO use it for Airtunes?
In order to extend the wireless range of the Linksys router, you would have to configure your AX and the Linksys in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Unfortunately, very few non-AirPort router are WDS-compatible. The few Linksys models that are reported to be compatible are the WRT54G & WRT54GS.
If you can create a WDS, streaming iTunes should not be a problem.
Also: Can I prevent my neighbors from seeing my Airport Express for Airtunes purposes? IE, I don't want my stereo to show up in the "multiple speakers" drop down of iTunes for other people connecting to the network...
No, but you can establish an iTunes Speaker password so they would not be able to stream to it.

My airport express is still providing a link to my wifi network but I can't find my airport express on my macbook and i can't link to my bose speakers through it ... any bright ideas?

I'm not sure what you mean. You can't find the express to set it up.. or you can't find the network created by the express?

  • Can I connect the Airport Express to a TV and watch the screen of my Mac on the TV?

Could I know if I can connect the Airport Express to the TV and watch the screen of my Mac or iPad or iPhone... On the TV?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's not possible with an AirPort Express. However, what you can do is to use an Apple TV if you want to mirror your iPhone, iPad and Mac onto the TV, being all of them connected to the AirPort Express. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5209?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Using Airport Express for External speakers and Apple TV.  When I'm on MAC computer adn using internet sound from Internet does not go through external speakers.  Instead it comes out of Mac computer speaker.  Why?

As far as I know, the Airport Express only transmits sounds via Itunes. So every other sound (internet, but also incoming mail) will be coming out of your mac instead of your external speakers.

  • My Apple Airport Express is blinking Amber and I cannot find it with the utility

My Apple Airport Express is blinking Amber and I cannot find it with the utility

Hi, had the same problem -
    1) Connected AE to Time Capsule with Ethernet cable - Configured it  - All worked fine
    2) Removed Ethernet cable between AE og TC - All worked fine
    3) Unpluged my AE from the socket outlet (power off) and pluged it inn where its supposed to be (2m from my Time Capsule)
    4) Now Airport Utility do not find me AE (after all i reconfigured through the Etheret calbe) ????
    A) Seems that Airport Utility are not able to "see" any wireless AE, only configurable by Ethernet Cable.
    B) Seems that AE are not able to reconnect to configured network after a power loss.
This is a little bit ****** - older airport utility had none of the problems (A and B)

  • I have 3 airport express units, an Ipod and a PC.  I used the PC to set up an airTunes and the AirUtility can see all three of the airexpresses.  The Ipod displays all of the airexpresses and I can pick any one to stream music to. PC won't - any ideas?

I have 3 airport express units, an Ipod and a Windows 7 PC.  I used the PC to set up an iTunes/airTunes and the AirUtility can see all three of the expresses.  The Ipod displays all of the expresses and I can pick any one to stream music to. The PC won't - any ideas? AirUtility tells me the 7.5.2 version of the firmware is the latest for the expresses and ITunes is also reporting that there are no upgrades available.  I get an error code -15000 when I try to connect from the PC to one of the expresses.

How do I configure the AX to connect to the hub's wireless network? It will only scan one base station Airport Express at a time in the Airport Utility. I think what I am trying to do is use the hub as a router to the two AX's. Is there a specific way to set this up?
To set up the AX to join a wireless network as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    Launch the AirPort Utility.
    Select the AX.
If not already connected to the AX's wireless network, go ahead and switch to it when prompted.
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Network Name: <type in the network name/SSID of the wireless network that you want to join or select it from the pop-up menu>
Wireless Security: None OR, if you are using security on your wireless network:
Wireless Security: <Select the appropriate level of security for the existing wireless network: WPA/WPA2 Personal | WPA2 Personal>
Password: <enter your wireless network security password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the same security password>
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX.

Iphone will not connect to airport express extended network - macbook and ipad will without problems.
iphone will connect to base station no problems, I've restored settings and started again but still the same, the iphone picked up the network for the last couple of months, but not now ?

I'm having the same issue. My AExpress used to give a good signal strength on the far side of the house extending he network created by my Extreme. However, I've noticed lately that my iPhone does not receive the same strong signal it once did. AE has a green light, I've rebooted it, and my Extreme but there is no change in signal strength. Other than the green light, how can I tell if the Express is working if I don't get a good network signal?
