Airport express appears to be dead

Airport expressed was unplugged from one location where it was working fine for many months. When replugged in no longer get any light on front (amber or green) and will not reboot (hard or soft) - has it died????

Yes, it has died. If it is still within the one year warranty (from date of purchase) then contact AppleCare (or bring it in to your local dealer) and arrange for a replacement.

If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.  I just bought the Airport Express and it's not clear how I should set up my System Preferences for Sharing.  Thx

Yes. Unfortunately the stereo is too far from the wired ethernet connection   My iMac is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable from the DSL modem (plugged into the wall, not wireless).  The Airport Express is plugged into an outlet 25' away from the iMac and connected to my speakers.  I've turned on the iMac Airport wireless Internet Sharing, hoping to stream iTunes to the Express connected to the stereo.  The iMac Airport picks up several neighborhood networks so I know it's working (and I connected my iPhone wifi to it just to check as well).
When I use Airport Utility to set up the Express, the only time Utility recognizes the Express is when the iMac Airport is off.  When I turn on the iMac Airport, the Airport Utility immediately loses the Express and asks to rescan.
Maybe that explains my problem better.

  • Airport Express Appears Connected, But No Music

I have the oldest version of Airport Express, and a 2009 vintage Macbook Pro with Yosemite recently installed, iTunes 12.0.0.140. Yosemite does not support the Airport Utility needed for the AE I have, but I was able to configure using Airport Utility 5.6.1 launcher from Corey Mahler.  So, the light is green on the AE, and iTunes shows clean connection to the AE, but there is no sound.  I have checked the connection from the AE to the receiver, and from receiver to speakers.
Prior to upgrading to Yosemite I was on Snow Leopard, the AE worked OK, except it tended to drop out and then only work intermittently the longer it was in use in any given session. But at least then I knew I had a connection.  Now with Yosemite and latest iTunes I'm wondering whether something else is preventing the music from playing.  Would think that iTunes would flag this if that were the case.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

You are correct on all counts.
I have a fairly new Linksys 6200 main router which does provide dual band Wi-Fi.
Since last writing, I did follow your recommendation to purchase and download Wi-Fi Explorer.  It gave me an excellent graphical view of the strengths of the various Wi-Fi networks, and I did confirm that my network was putting out the dual bands, that my extender was also putting out, etc.  I could also walk around the house and see how the signals rose and fell, depending on location.
Signal seems to be strong enough in all areas that the airport express should work, however it only seems to work, and then just intermittently, when I have it close to the main router, where the signal strength according to Wi-Fi Explorer reads 84%. If I move my laptop to the AE's original location, the signal is about 68%, and is coming via the extender. Most of the neighbors' signals were below 50%, but there are a lot of them.  Too bad the AE does not supper 5GHz bands because they seem wide open except for my router.
Not sure how the signal strength % relates to signal to noise ratio.
What I could also see is that the 2.4GHz band where most of the neighborhood networks were broadcasting. I tried to assign my main router to specific bands (only choice is within the 2.4GHz for the AE), instead of automatic, and sometimes it helped when the AE was close to the router, but it would still cut out.
So, when the AE is close to the router, I get some intermittent sound, but further away, nothing at all. So it appears that there is something either wrong with the AE or its just not getting the quality of signal it needs from the newer routers.
Our iPads, iphones, Apple TV seem to work fine - though the Apple TV occasionally pauses to re-load.
The variables over the last few months have been:
    1. The newer Linksys main router, which replaced another older Linksys (both cases used default settings except for network access password).
    2. A Linksys extender added recently so that my son could use his "smart" TV.
    3. My upgrading from Snow Leopard to Yosemite two weeks ago (on 10.10.1 now).
Prior to these, the AE would sometimes go for hours without a problem, but then stop playing for seconds or minutes (green light on regardless). It was when I installed Yosemite that I lost even intermittent sound coming from the AE, in its original location.
I am tempted to try a newer AE to see whether access to the 5GHz band would solve the problem.
    Thanks again.

  • Airport Express appears as an option in iTunes but sound only plays on comp

I used to be able to play itunes music through my computer or through an amplifier connected to an Airport Express. Since upgrading to iTunes 8 there is a third option displayed in the lower right portion of the iTunes window, "multiple speakers", but now, no matter which option I select the music plays through my computer and not through the remote speakers connected to the amplifier. Any one else have this problem? Any solutions?
I have turned off IPv6 to no effect. The Airport Express seems to be functioning normally as a wireless network. I have changed the iTunes preferences with respect to controlling sound in remote speakers with no effect.

There is a 3.5mm standard headphone audio output on the bottom of the airport express. If you plug speaks or headphones into this port while airport express is selected in iTunes, you be able to hear your music. Usefull if your destop is in one room and you want to hear music from it in another room where the airport is located.

  • My airport express appears to overheat and become inactive.  The light is green.  I can unplug it, wait a bit and plug it back in and it works fine.  This is the second AE that has exhibited these symptoms.

I have an Airport Express that I use to extend the range of my Airport Extreme.  A previous Airport Express stopped working and was invisible to the Airport Setup Utility.  It was hot to the touch.  Unplugging and re-activating had no effect.  I bought a new Airport Express and it has begun exhibiting similar symptoms.  It stops working (but the LED stays solid green).  It is hot to the touch.  It is not visible to the Setup Utility.  I unplug it, wait a few minutes, and plug it back in.  It works fine.

We see very few posts on the forum about an AirPort Express overheating.
Except for unplugging during vacations, etc., I've had a couple of AirPort Express devices on 24/7 for years with no issues at all. They do get moderately warm because the case acts to dissipate heat.
Do you have the Express located where there is plenty of free air and good ventilation around the device?
Have you verified that the AC socket is putting out the normal 115-120 volts?

  • Brand New Airport Express-Green Light Wireless, Dead Green Wired

I just bought a brand-new airport express device. I have a cable modem connected to a dual band AirPort Extreme base station in my basement. My house is wired with Cat5 Ethernet cable. In a far bedroom, I am replacing an airport express-N (previous model) that was hard-wired to the Extreme. Always worked perfectly in extending and supplying 2.4ghz band wifi to that part of the house. I bought the brand-new AirPort Express to utilize the dual band bridge.
After many hours of trying, this new airport express will only work properly if I do not plug in the Ethernet cable. It seems to be performing well, but i was under the impression that an ethernet cable should be used to physically connect the AirPort devices each other.
Currently, in this wireless setup, I do have both bands available. I feel that if I used the cable, I would have much stronger better signal.
Interestingly, when I do ether-connect the airport devices together. My AirPort Utility looses all of my AirPort devices and shows (with a yellow dot) that my Internet (modem) is not available. At the same time, all of my AirPort devices continue to show a green light. I am unable to connect anything with any of my wireless devices.
Also, when everything seems to be working fine, my AirPort Utility does depict the wireless set up with a dashed line between the two AirPort devices representing that it is wireless connection.
With my last AirPort Express, a wireless set did extend the range, but only while slowing everything down. An ethernet cable, when introduced, made everything work perfectly, during which time the AirPort Utility depicted that setup with all solid line indicating wired connectivity.
I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who might be able to tell me why when I introducing ethernet to the new AirPort Express, it takes down the entire wireless network.
Hi, of course, try all of the normal troubleshooting suggestions. I recycled all devices I have rebooted everything.

It's always a good idea to do a complete power recycle when switching out network components ...
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Airport express does not appear in Airport Utility

    Hello,
I am having problems connecting my Airport Express to my network.
My configuration is all Apple. I am attempting to set up Airtunes. I have an Airport Extreme (software version 5.7) plus Airport Express. The Airport Extreme is hardwired to my Power Mac G5 (10.5.6) via ethernet. Wireless security is WEP 128 bit.
The Airport Express appears to establish a connection with no problems. The indicator light on the Express goes through normal start up and then a steady solid green.
Airport Utility shows the Airport Extreme but the Airport Express is not listed.
Any suggestions on how to make the connection are appreciated!
    Thank you!

When having difficulties accessing the AirPort thru the AirPort Utility, try the following, in order checking accessibility with the AirPort Utility after each step:
o Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the AirPort wirelessly, make sure that you are connected to its wireless network before running the AirPort Utility to administer it. If you are still unable to access it with the utility, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the base station's LAN ports.
o Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
o Perform a "factory default" (AirPort Express) or "hard" (AirPort Extreme / Time Capsule) reset.

  • Airport Express: Internet Access Works But Not "Seen" in Admin. Util. ??

    Hi All --
I have a friend with the set-up described below and a seemingly impossible problem. he's asked for my help, and so I'm asking for yours, because frankly the situation just has me stumped. Here goes:
    Set-Up & Other Relevant Facts
    • DSL connection comes out of the phone jack and goes to a Westell model 6100 modem.
    • From there, a short Ethernet cable goes to a Linksys 5-Port Workgroup Switch.
    • Two Ethernet cables exit the Linksys Switch: one goes to a PC, and one goes to an Airport Express (AX).
    • From the AX, a USB cable goes to a printer (a Brother 1440 laser printer).
    • The AX is only about 10 feet from his PowerBook G4 15-inch and he gets a full (four-bar) signal on Airport menulet at the top of the screen.
    • When he first set-up his system, the G4 and the Airport did set up the Brother printer (using the Airport Setup Assistant), and the Brother is listed as a printer on the G4's printer window or such.
    • Both the G4 and the PC access the web fine via this setup (the G4 wirelessly). In System Preferences > Network, the Airport Network is listed, and it says "Airport is connected to the network Apple Network 6c6c1. You are connected to the Internet via Airport."
    Problems
    • When the Airport Admin Utility is opened, no Airport Express appears at all, even when "rescan" is repeatedly clicked.
How can this be? How can the PowerBook be connecting wirelessly to the Web through the Airport Express, but the Airport Express no be "seen" by the Airport Admin utility?
    • In addition, although web surfing is possible for both PowerBook and PC, neither computer is able to successfully print to the Brother 1440. When he tried printing from the PC, he got the following error messages:
    [Status for LPT1]
Result=(02)The printer on this port is not responding.
    Status Line=BUSY:H,ACK:H,PE:H,SLCT:H,FALT:H,SLIN:L,HBSY:H,INIT:H,STB:H
Later, it seemed that printing from either computer would start and then stall, flashing a variety of different signals about spooling or "printer busy" and the like, all of which appeared to indicate things just weren't working right..
Anyway, the initial questions we're dealing with are the ones in bold above. The printer issues are probably are related and they can be addressed secondarily.
Any and all help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Thanks for your reply- just to re focus my problem- I
have no issue with getting a wireless network "green
    light"
Which is the cable modem correctly giving the Express an IP from your ISP's DHCP pool of numbers.
    - my issue is I can't stream itunes or get a
usb printer to work off the xpress USB port.
I have checked everything as my posts explain- The
reason I have been looking at this thread is I have
never been able to see the airport in a "scan" per
    JDee post.
That is odd and doesn't happen on my wireless network!
Nor have I read in any post that an extra
    ip address is necessary
All routers have at least two IP's - an external and an internal. When the router acts as an internal DHCP server it hands out many more IP's. Your Express gets one external IP and the default internal one is set to 10.0.1.1 and the first IP handed out is 10.0.1.2, etc.
However I have seen different subnets- from dncp
    server.
Are you talking about the external IP's that your ISP is randomly assigning without your control? Are you talking about the different ways you can configure the internal DHCP numbers? If not there's something else going on. Everything on Douglas internal network should have an IP from the Express DHCP server vs. JDee's internal IP's should all be assigned by the modem/router DHCP server. Once you have everything on the same network numbers AirTunes, printers, and Airport Admin Utility lists just work!
Hey look I really appreciate your help here in
anyway- I'm really stumped. I want to stream music
really bad... and just don't see why it won't work-
    its drving me crazy...
I enjoy a good challenge, especially when they are solvable. After trying all the possible software and connection possibilities there's always the chance it's been a hardware failure all along
What IP number does your computer have and what number does the Express have? If it's a router it has two IP's!

  • Airport Express works with every device except base PC

I recently purchased an Airport Express to replace my dead Netgear wireless router. After installing the software on my laptop (which is also new, but worked with the old Netgear router), I was unable to connect to the network. My iPad, our iPhones, and her laptop all connect easily. I've tried rebooting my Comcast modem, and several other things I've read in forums to no avail. Did I miss something when setting up the software? I'm no exactly tech savvy when it comes to this kind of stuff, so any help you guys could give would be awesome!!

Change the channel on the Airport Express to a channel between 1 and 11 and see if that makes a difference.

  • Airport express is green - but not showing up in AirportUtility or AirTunes

    Hello everyone
I have an Airport Extreme as my main base station upstairs. I have recently plugged in a Dlink615 using an ethernet cable to give me wireless signal in over my kitchen downstairs. This has worked well and we can all use our laptops etc. in the Kitchen now.
However - I have an Airport Express plugged in - in the kitchen, and have configured it to join the wireless network being pumped out by the Dlink - all seems to be well - the Airport Express appears to connect fine and go green - but following this, the Airport Express can not be found by the Airport Utility and does not show up in AirTunes.
Can any one offer any advice?
    Thanks very much.

    Hi Carolyn
Thanks for your reply. I'm running 10.6.4.
Unfortunately - no luck with that solution. The Kitchen Airport Express also does not show up in the air tunes on my Apple TV.
I have had no problems with getting airport expresses to show up in air tunes before adding this Dlink to my set up - I think it is something to do with the fact that the DLink is plugged into my Airport extreme. (I have tried DHCP off and on).
    Thanks

  • ITunes shows time out error when trying to play on Airport Express.

Time out error when trying to play on Airport Express. This started with an iTunes update, problems has to be with iTunes, Airport Express appears to be communicating fine, even shows when speakers are not connected.

Same here, though on XP. Have tried cleaning registry, reinstalling, deleting preferences. Created a new user with no library and I have the problem there, too, so it's not the library.
Is there no one to call about this??

  • AirPort Express has suddenly lost Power?

I just got back from 6 weeks overseas and I left my AirPort Express plugged into the power with a USB printer connected and the Ethernet Broadband cable connected. When I got back, my AirPort had no power lights on at all, but the printer and modem were still powered through same plug socket. I have unplugged all cables from AirPort and tried this in various other power sockets around the house but no amber light comes on at all, it has completely lost all power. I've tried the Factory Reset but still no joy, any advice would be most welcome. Cheers

  • Strange Airport express

Could have been covered but here's the deal.
My airport express has been behaving strange lately.
#1 I couldn't get it to go on line ( Green light) for air tunes
#2 I finally got it to work for my external speakers but the yellow light is still blinking???
But it worled when i changed the security to WEP from WPA
#3 Now the airtunes stopped playing (yellow light still blinking)
#4 Mulitple locations in iTunes still visible but one is greyed out.
#5 Airport express appears as another network choice???
Ok I'm humble. I configured the express to act like an airtunes
device not extend a network but it seem that it has decided
    to do it's own thing.
    Any thoughts????

For streaming iTunes via AirTunes, do you want the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to join an existing wireless network as a wireless client or to create its own network? In the former configuration, you would not have to switch networks and can both access the Internet and stream iTunes at the same time. In the second configuration, you would need to switch networks when wanting to do either.

Please excuse this duplicate post, but I posted this this morning in the AIrport Express forum at about 8 a.m. and have thus far received no replies at all. In fact, it's only been viewed a total of nine times -- and half of those are me. Very sad, and my friend is growing fairly desperate and is now convinced that only a complete reset and fresh start will fix his problem......

    Hi JDee,
Well, it's the old 'friend of mine' gag, eh. Seriously though, it seems there have been numerous post over in the Aiport forums regarding this issue. I guess the first thing your friend can try is following these instructions to reset the AE. One of the other things discussed was the firmware version for AE. Some users have reported that version 6.1.1 works better than 6.2. One user reported being able to use the other button in AE admin utility, then entering the assigned IP address and password to gain access. One user resolved his issue by enabling the setting Distrubute IP addresses in the AE. It should be noted he also reset up his network at that point as well. Now as far as the printer goes, below are some instructions from iFelix for the Windows side which may be of some help.
    Printing from Windows to AE
Problem finding Printer Driver on Windows
For the Mac side apparently there are issues with that model printer. Here's a link of compatible printers that iFelix put together. You'll see the notation next to the Brother 1440. Hope that helps a little. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

    Welcome to the discussions!
From the description in your post, it sounds as if there has been a major internal component failure inside your AirPort Express. If it does not respond at all, it will need to be replaced.
