Airport Express as a client on a D-Link 624 WPA2 network

Hi everyone!
I took the plunge and bought an iPod and I'm totally hooked.
Then I got an Airport Express. I had some issues getting it connected as a client, so I tried it with no encryption or security whatsoever (not even WEP) and it worked brilliantly. I played music on my wireless windows laptop and on my living room stero and it was great.
However, I can't get the warm & fuzzies about running my network with no security. I'm not wedded to my router (d-link 624) but after 10 days of futzing with it, I'm ready to give up. I have tried WPA with AES and TKIP, both no dice. I haven't tried WEP because I don't think it's much better than nothing.
I have googled until I could google no more and while I see whisperings of people with these issues, I've yet to find a solution or a clear report from someone that has it working.
I'm quite experienced in setting up wired and wireless networks, this is not new to me.
Has anyone been able to get this setup working?
Any tricks I should know about?
I'm using a 63 character ASCII password, randomly generated. At first it was full of punctuation and symbols, then I changed to one with only alphanumerics, still no dice.
In my router logs I see, "Wireless PC connected" followed by the Airport's WiFi MAC address, then "authenticating...". Those 2 messages are repeated every 10 seconds.
Airport is running firmware 6.2 and the airport utility on Windows is 4.2
Any help appreciated from this budding Apple fan - thanks

I have an D-Link DI-524 working with a Airport Express. I try someday WPA security for my network and this had made my wireless network unreliable.
I found on the D-Link website an information stating that D-Link product must use WEP-128bit HEX to be compatible with Airport Product.
Since now, it work perfectly using this security. You should try this. And beside, I do not agree that WEP isn't better than nothing. How many people know how to hack a WEP-128bit wireless network within you wireless range? If you have no security at all, for sure, someone will use your connection one day.
But still, even better than any security, if you can reduce the power of the wireless signal to the minimum you need, it will reduce as well any chance for someone to hack you.
But still, I think you should try WEP in your setup. Good luck,

Is there a way to configure win 8 Laptop to airport express?  I can see the connection to the wireless network, but troubleshooter suggests there's there is no gateway and of course no internet. The connection
shows limited.  Any help you could provide would be most appreciated.  Further, should I simply buy another router for the windows machine?  If I did that, would it interfere with the airport?

The internal HDDs must be formatted in either EXT3 or EXT4 file system because NSS uses Linux OS.  This is mainly because the RAM designed to fit with the customized Linux OS's size.
You can connect to an external HDD via a  USB or eSATA port. The external HDD's file system can be NTFS, FAT32, AFT or EXT3/4 to be recognized for read/write. You can connect a 2TB USB/eSATA drive connec to the NSS via USB port to format your HDD for NTFS, AFT, FAT32, or EXT3/4 partition.
You can join the NSS to a Windows domainr so all domain users to access NSS. You cannot replace the NSS for the Windows 2003 SP2 server. They are two different products and do different jobs. Windows server is features sets server while the NSS is the files/data server.
    Hope that helps!!

  • HT1145 I have an older plug in version of Airport Express and am trying to connect it to my wifi network to boost coverage but it is not connecting to my network.

I have an older plug in version of Airport Express and am trying to connect it to my wifi network to boost coverage but it is not connecting to my network.

What is the make & model of the wireless router that you are trying to "boost" with the AirPort Express? Is your Express an 802.11g or 802.11n model? Is the connection between routers going to be a wired or wireless one?

  • HT4260 Is Airport Express Gen 1 (no WAN port) suitable for an extended network (roaming)

Is the Airport Express Gen 1 (no WAN port) suitable for an extended network (roaming)? It (Express) ha no WAN port.
I have a new Airport Extreme.  I wish to extend the network (wired, not wireless) to an older (Gen 1) Airport Express.
I have followed the instructions explicitly.
EXCEPT: the Airport Express has only a LAN port and no WAN port.  The instructions state to insert the cable from the Extreme into the Express WAN port.
    Solutons? Thanks!

    Thanks, CRMDVM, for that explanation.
I am successfully using the Express as extended (wireless) now with the Extreme as the primary base station.  I will try it (wired) with an ethernet cable attached to the Express (Gen 1) LAN port (which you say also functions as a WAN port in this case). BTW, my confusion arose because Gen2 of the Express includes a WAN and a LAN port

  • Use Airport Express G to set up wireless printing on a N network?

I currently have a N network set up, with a First Gen Airport Extreme acting as the main hub, and the latest Airport Express N used to extend the range of the network.
However, I would now like to set up a wireless printer in another part of the house, and I have a spare first gen Airport Express G lying around - Would it be possible to make use of this Airport Express G to add the wireless printer onto my N network?
I guess my question is, is the airport express G compatabile with my N network if I just use it for wireless printing? And if so, how do I go about setting it up?
    Thanks for the help.

    Hello again
I'm still having the same problem.  I go through the step by step setup for wifi but when I get to step number 5 (HTMLConfig) instead of opening the next window it takes me back to the previous one.
The step by step instructions are here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02847467&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_u...
I have also looked in the manual that came with the printer but it basically just says "follow the on screen instructions for setup when you install the CD" which I have already done.
All my software is up to date.   I have OS Mavericks and there are no updates pending.
My printer is not compatible with Airprint so I cannot use that option.  I did not use the WPS method as you instructed.  I opted for Method 3: Wireless setup using a USB connection.

  • Can you hook up a Lacie Wireless Space to an Airport Express as a client?

    Hello,
I haven't gotten much help from Lacie on this, but has anyone here managed to hook up a LaCie Wireless space to their Airport Express created wireless network?
I can hook up the Airport Express to a Lacie created network, but not the other way around.
I want to be able to hook up the Lacie as client in case I ever want or need to upgrade my router.
According to Lacie, I should be able to do this, but they haven't been able to tell me how.
If you know the Airport settings I need to have for this, please let me know.

The AirPort Express can "join" virtually any wireless network for use with AirTunes or a remote printer.
    But....
The AirPort Express can only "extend" or "repeat" a wireless network from another Apple router.

  • Difficulty setting up airport express as a client in an existing network

Wow, I've been struggling all day to set this up and I can't seem to get it to work.
I have an existing wireless network that uses a 2wire homeportal 1000SW DSL modem. I have Itunes running on my HP windows XP laptop, and I just bought an airport express that I'd like to hook up to my stereo to allow me to stream from itunes to the stereo.
I can get it to work as a separate network, but I can't get the airport express to connect as a client to the existing 2wire network. There's no ACL that I'm aware of (guests with laptops are always able to connect to the 2wire if I give them the password). I'm using the hex excape character "$" before my 10 character WEP password when I'm setting it up. But I just get the blinking amber light.
It's really quite a pain to use the two separate networks, because for some reason, I have to enter the network password each time I want to switch. Also, it would be nice to be able to be connected to the internet at the same time that I'm streaming my Itunes.
Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Jfshelton,
Can you please elaborate on how you were able to
configure AE as a client on your existing network. I
have the EXACT problem you were having and almost an
    identical set up.
Hey, sorry for the late reply. I was out of town for the holidays.
I'm afraid that by now the info has leaked out of my brain since it's been a couple of months. However, I remember strongly suspecting that the problem had to do with the format of the WEP password. From other info that I read, I got the idea that the 2wire gateway uses a 40-bit password, which is apparently an older format. The Admin Utility definitely was expecting a 64-bit password. When I set the password up using the Admin Utility, I was able to specify the format as 40-bits. You may also need to specify that it's hex.
    Hope this helps.

  • Airport express and limit clients

Is there anyway I can limit the clients (devices) using my wifi through airport express? or a way that I can kick off specific devices?

So my connectivity issues are only when I connect the Play 5 to the AX ethernet port.
That would be the Ethernet port on the AirPort Express then, correct?
If yes, I don't understand why other devices would work when connected to the AX and the Sonos 5 does not. All that I can think of is that the Sonos 5 might require more bandwidth than the wireless "hop" between the AEBS and AX can provide.
In effect, the  Sonos is really connecting using wireless. You are just changing the wireless to an Ethernet connection at the AX to connect to the Sonos product.
If that is the case, then you are going to have to pull an Ethernet cable so that the Sonos 5 connects directly to the AEBS. You can run Ethernet 300+ feet or 100 meters with virtually no loss.
I would recommend that you check with Sonos Support to report your findings during your "tests" and ask them if there is some reason why the connection won't work over wireless.
    Please report on your findings.

  • Problem with Airport Express and Ethernet Clients

Hello All, I'm stumped so I hope you can help me out!
I've got a aiport express wirelessly extending an aebs which is creating a network from my isp's router. Everything's working fine. I'm trying to add a Sonos Play5 to the airport express via the ethernet port ( I can't get the Play5 to connect wirelessly). Problems is when I plug the Sonos into the ethernet port the Sonos works fine, but everything else on the network gets booted off. I can't recconnect any of my macs or i-devices. When I  uplug the ethernet cable from the Sonos everything reconnects and works as it did before.
I've got the airport express set to "Extend a wireless network" in the aiport utility.
Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

So my connectivity issues are only when I connect the Play 5 to the AX ethernet port.

  • HT1515 Can I use my airport express to connect a printer AND to extend my wifi network at the same time? Or one feature excludes the other? Thanks...

It is an Airport Express first gen.

Yes, the AirPort Express do all that you ask.....providing that it will be extending the network from another Apple router.

  • Can I use the LAN port of my Airport Express, which is being used to extend my wi-fi network from my Time Capsule?

I have a home wi-fi network based on a Time Capsule (3rd Gen.).  I recently added a new "n" Airport Express to extend my wi-fi coverage to areas of my home where the signal has been weak or non-existant.  The setup went very well (Airport Utility 6 on my MacBook Pro running Mtn. Lion) and was extremely simple and trouble free.  Now I am attempting ot plug an ethernet device (internet bridge reciver from a wirelss weather station) into the LAN port.  The weather station instructions say the device should communicate fine plugged directly into my router (not physically available where the device needs to be) OR plugged into a LAN port of an ethernet hub.  My question is then:  with the Airport Express in wi-fi extend mode, is the LAN port available to cable internet devices into the network?

My question is then:  with the Airport Express in wi-fi extend mode, is the LAN port available to cable internet devices into the network?
Yes, assuming that the setup went correctly.
Test by moving your laptop or other computer close to the AirPort Express. Temporarily, turn off the wireless on the laptop and connect it using a spare Ethernet cable to the LAN port on the Express.
See if you can get an Internet connection. If you can, you know the Express has been configured and is functioning correctly.
Since the Express is in bridge mode when it "extends" both ports become LAN ports, so if you have a second device that needs an Ethernet connection, connect it to the WAN port as it will work as well.

  • Extend Airport Express with Time Capsule? So just one Wi-Fi network in my house ? Possible?

    Hi!
I did Google and try to get it working at home - but I can't get it to work. I want to be able to walk in my house without my iPhone/iPad loosing the Wi-Fi signal because now there is downstairs and a upstairs wi-fi network.
So the thing I want is.. I got a Airport Express on the ground floor which is for my Wi-Fi network there.
On my 2nd floor I want my Time Capsule to extend this network - so that my iPhone picks that Wi-Fi up straight away. Now when I am upstairs my iPhone is still connected to the wi-fi from downstairs (which it can't reach) and so I am not connected. Which results in me having to manually switch to the upstairs network..
My question : Is it possible to setup a Wi-Fi network downstairs and have my Time Capsule repeat it (so not a new network) for upstairs use?
Hope someone can help me and this is possible!
    Thnx in advance!

  • Is it normal for airport express not to show up in utility when extending a network?

Hi, with the help of this community, I think I successfully extended my wifi network by using airport expresses, connected to my time capsule, via my houses electrical system (via powerline adaptors), which ultimately connect via an RJ45 cable to the airport express.  I tried to do it all with the same netwrok, so I do not need to switch to different networks when I move about the house.
I think it works because my signal strenght is much stronger than before I added the powerline adaptors.  So, why am I back here?, two things.  First is I want to make sure I did this all correctly, as I am adding a few more of these powerline adapters as they have really changed my wireless experiences.
What should the internet setting be on the time capsule and airport expresses.  I have it set the "connection" to off (bridge mode) on the TC and the express units.  But the express units blink yellow and says there is a NAT/DHCP error.  something about the time capsule rejecting the sharing?  so I chnage the TC to share a public address and the express to off (bridge mode), and I think this works.
But when I do this, none of the express units show up in the utility anymore.  Should I just take it as a blessing that it seems to be working, and not mess with it?
What should all the setting be?  I am sure that I should be able to see all the units in the utility.
Thanks if this makes any sense to you.

But when I do this, none of the express units show up in the utility anymore.  Should I just take it as a blessing that it seems to be working, and not mess with it?
Did you power cycle the entire network to get things in proper sequence?
If not, power off everything....all devices....order is not important
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the modem first and let it run a moment or two
Power up the Time Capsule the same way
    Power up the powerline devices
Power up each Express one at a time
Power up other devices one at at time
What should the internet setting be on the time capsule and airport expresses.
The setting on the Time Capsule will depend on the type of modem that you have connected. It sounds like the "Share a public IP address" would be correct for the Time Capsule. Everything else must be in "Bridge Mode"
Each of the AirPort Express devices must be configured to "Create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security setting and password as the Time Capsule network. Set the Channels as "Automatic" and double check as the last configuration step to make sure that they are set for Bridge Mode.
Then restart the entire network as outlined above and you are in business.
The Express devices should definitely show up in AirPort Utility when you have everything set up.

  • Airport Express not seen in iTunes but is connected to wifi network

This is the second Airport Express that's failed on me... and in exactly the same way. It works great for about 8+ months; suddenly, it stops working but still has a green light and is pingable from any other device on the wireless network. Neither iTunes nor any of the admin utilities can see it. I've tried a soft, hard and factory reset. No success; however, after the factory reset, I'm able to see and configure it with the admin utility. I was even able to update the software on it (6.3). After configuration and subsequent restart, it successfully authenticates/connects to the wireless network and that's when my mac is no longer able to see/manage it.
I only use the Airport Express to stream music from iTunes to my stereo located about 10ft away. Confirmed that iTunes is set to look for remote speakers on startup. The last time this happened, I simply bought a new one that worked without issue... until now.
The issue may have started after a software update on my mac though I can't confirm this - I don't usually check iTunes connectivity to the Airport Express post update. Any ideas on what to I can try next?
