Airport Express as an Ethernet Bridge....Can it be done?

I have both a Airport Extreme Base Station and a Express Base Station. I need to connect my TV to the internet (TV has no Wi-Fi, but is internet capable). Can I use my Express Base as an Ethernet Bridge? I already have both "Stations" on one network allowing me to play music from my computer through my home theater system and use the internet at the same time.

If you have the newer Airport Extreme with "n", not the flying saucer style, then you would probably be better off in the long run to buy the newer "n" version of the Airport Express.
That way your network would run faster overall then the older b/g series.
I sold all 3 of my older Airport Express units on eBay and replaced them with the newer "n' models.

  • Airport Express as a wireless bridge can't connect using the 2.4GHz band

I have an Airport Extreme with simultaneous dual-band support as well as an Airport Express serving as a wireless bridge to extend the range of my primary base station.

By the way, the 5GHz band does not penetrate very well,
That is not surprising since the higher frequency signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. Many users are finding that you almost have to have a line-of-sight situation between the computer and router for 5 GHz to work really well.
and the signal becomes weaker significantly after it penetrates through two walls.
Again, not surprising. What is surprising is that the AirPort Express was choosing the 5 GHz band to "extend", as it normally latches onto the stronger of the two signals, which almost always the 2.4 GHz signal.
You may be correct that the newer firmware has made some changes in this regard. My guess would be that most users were trying to extend the 5 GHz band and not having much success. We'll keep an eye on this.

  • Can I add a second Airport Express using an Ethernet cable to extend my network if the first AX is wirelessly connected to an Xtreme?

Hi, I run a small motel and I am trying to extend the wireless network from the office to the rooms in the next building.
I have an AirPort Xtreme connected to my router with an ethernet cable and it works fine.  I have then connected an AirPort Express to this in the next bulding wirelessly (as i cant run an ethernet cable outside) which extends the network over all but the last 2 rooms in the next building.  There are bick walls so it sruggles over the distance.  I realise I cant connect another airport express wirelessly to extend the network further but can I connect another Airport Express using and ethernet cable to the exisiting Aiport Express to extend the network that extra distance?

You can do this, but as you might imagine, that is going to place even more of a load on the weakest link....the wireless "hop"......between your AirPort Extreme and the current AirPort Express.
So, things will slow down even more. Whether or not that will be acceptable to your guests is open to question. Light browsing and email should be OK. Someone trying to download a large file is going to be waiting longer than they might consider normal.
Things like this, you simply cannot predict in advance. Might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy if the new Express puts more of load on the network than is expected.

  • WDS with Airport express and Dual ethernet Airport base

Can the airport express and dual ethernet airport base create a wds? I can't find the options on the airport base's software.

coloradoapple, Welcome to the discussion area!
The Dual Ethernet (snow) AirPort base station (ABS) does not support WDS.
Only the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and AirPort Express (AX) support WDS.

  • Airport Express as a Wireless Bridge and AirTunes?

I have a linksys router and just got a Tivo I was thinking of getting the Tivo wireless adapter but after much though i had a brainstorm
What if i were go get an express and hook it up as a wireless bridge (connect the Tivo to the ethernet port) and while i am at it connect my computer to my stereo system via AirTunes.
Is it possible to use the Airport Express as a wireless bridge and use airtunes at the same time while using my linksys router?

To do this, you must use WDS. Very, very, very few 3rd party devices are compatible with Apple's WDS.
The Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not latest versions v5) however are compatible with Apple's WDS. If you have one of those, it is possible.

  • Connecting Airport Extreme to Airport Express as an ethernet receiver

    1. I am using an airport express to send out my wireless signal.
    2. I want to receive that signal using my airport extreme
    3. Then I want to be able to extend my airport express network to ethernet connected computers on my airport extreme
    4. Then I also want to extend the wireless signal of my airport express using my airport extreme
I currently can NOT get the airport extreme to share the airport express network through the ethernet ports.
The airport extreme says "This base station is setup to extend a wireless network, but the network it is attempting to join does not have 'Allow the network to be extended' selected." (I can't find that select box in the airport express manual setup anywhere!)

That is an 802.11n feature. Since the AirPort Express (AX) is NOT 802.11n capable, the AX does not support that feature.
Instead you must configure the AX and AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to connect using WDS. Ensure that your AEBS is configured to operate in an 802.11g compatible mode.

  • New AirPort Express, but only 1 device can be connected at a time

I recently switched out a Linksys router for an AirPort Express, and now I am only able to connect 1 of my devices (MacBook, iPad, iPod Touch, Tivo) to the internet at any given time. I'm not sure if this is an AirPort or ISP (Earthlink DSL) issue, but with the Linksys, I was always able to have multiple devices on my home network at once.
With each of my Apple devices, I have to open Safari and obtain a connection by entering my DSL password. Specifically, the Earthlink ASDL Modem page says, "The Internet connection is currently in use by another computer (lists the IP address). Enter your DSL Account logon password to switch the Internet connection to this computer."
After I do this, Earthlink gives me the option of 'Releasing the Connection' so other computers can access the internet without entering the logon password...whether I do or don't, it doesn't change the fact only 1 of my devices can be online at once.
Did I configure my AirPort incorrectly or is there a setting that I need to change to fix this issue? Thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions, kaytoem!
This sounds like you may have the AirPort Express set up in "bridge mode", which would only allow one device to connect at time.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Look for the Connection Sharing setting
This should be set to Share a public IP address
    Update to save any changes
    Does that help?

  • I am trying to sync Go Rock TRMS03SR Bluetooth Portable 3D Surround Speakers with my Airport Express or iTunes So I can play Music in Multiple rooms. I have a WiFi network, my living room speakers are connected directly to Airport Express.

I am trying to sync Go Rock TRMS03SR Bluetooth Portable 3D Surround Speakers with my Airport Express or iTunes So I can play Music in Multiple rooms. I have a WiFi network, my living room speakers are connected directly to Airport Express, so how can I get the wireless bluetooth speakers to play at the same time in my bedroom?

Did you ever get this to work?  My guess is that the speakers are out of bluetooth range at that distance.

  • Connecting 2 Airport Extremes wirelessly....can it be done?

Connecting 2 Airport Extremes wirelessly....can it be done?
I have 2 Airport Extremes. I'm only using 1 of them right now connected to a cable modem. It works well. I can get a wireless signal in most of the house and even outside a bit. However there are upstairs bedrooms on the other side of the house that I don't get a very strong signal on. No "big" deal really but here is what I thought.......
Can I set up my 2nd Airport Extreme to wirelessly receive the signal from the 1st (main) Airport Extreme and place the 2nd Airport Extreme close to the bedrooms with weak reception? I was thinking that the 2nd AirPort Extreme could just pickup and boost my original signal.
Is this possible? I can't find it mentioned in my Airport Manual.
If so, what is the term for this? That way I can search for information on how to configure all of this. If you have any other ideas on how this might able to work please let me know.
    Thanks for your help

OK, you will need to make configuration changes to both of your Extremes.
For the main Extreme (the one connected to your modem now):
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab under the icons
Look on the wireless setup page and make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended". This may be under the Options tab on the wireless page. If you have a dual band Extreme, you can only extend the main network, not the 'guest" network.
    Update to save settings
For the remote Extreme, temporarily locate it near your computer so that you can configure it:
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
On the wireless setup page, change the Wireless Mode to "Extend a wireless network"
You will select the name of wireless network created by your main Extreme. Enter the password if needed.
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
    Update to save settings
    That should do it.

  • Can i use an airport express as an ethernet print server?

here's my situation: i have a belkin wireless g router connected to my cable modem and my G4 desktop connected to the belkin router. i need to access an epson 3000 printer with only an ethernet port in another room in the house. i was told my the tech guy in the local apple store that i could use an airport express to do this but for the life of me i can't make it happen using either airport setup assistant or airport admin utility. so is it possible? and if not, what would you suggest i do so i can access the printer?
    thanks.

Can I use an Airport Express as a wired client to an Airport Extreme?
Sure, follow the instructions in this Apple Support document and simply substitute the AirPort Express where you see a second AirPort Extreme:

  • Can i use an airport express as both a bridge and for airtunes?

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station (5th gen) and an Airport Express. The Airport Express is currently set up only for Airtunes. I would like to use it to extend my existing wifi signal to the backyard. Do I have to use the Airport Express EITHER for Airtunes OR as a bridge, or can I do both simultaneously?

The AirPort Express can be configured for the following uses simultaneously:  extend a wireless network, AirTunes, and printing. Here I am assuming that you will be using a wireless connection between the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.
Hopefully, your AirPort Express is the newer "n" wireless version, because this will provide the best network performance, and it is also easy to configure as well.
As to whether you will have adequate signal strength in the back yard, that is difficult to predict in advance. A lot will depend on the distance that the Express is located from the AirPort Extreme, how many walls and obstructions are in the signal path, and how much of the backyard area that you intend to cover.

  • Can I disable the wireless part of my airport express and use ethernet?

I have an airport express which is used to print and stream itunes to my stereo.
I just purchased an airport extreme and I am worried that it will lower my throughput from N to G. Is there a way to connect the airport express to the airport extreme via ethernet chord and disable the wireless part? I realize I can get still connect to a printer using the usb port on the extreme but then I have no way of streaming my itunes?

To adjust the wireless radio power on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Options...
o Transmit Power: <select the transmit power from 10% to 100%>
o Click "Done" to close the Wireless Options window.
o Click on "Update" to save the settings to the AX.

  • CAN AIRPORT EXPRESS STREAM USING ETHERNET

If you have speakers outside of the wireless netowrk range is it possible to connect airport to an existing ethernet connection and use this to stream music to the speakers?

Yes, if you configure the AirPort Express in Bridge Mode so that it will pick up the correct network settings.

  • How can I use Airport Express (2004 version) ethernet port?

I am using a Time Capsule to access the internet. Now I would like to use my old AE to "root" that internet connection via the ethernet port to my WD HD TV Live (or Notebook w/o wifi).
I know that it is possible with the newer airport express version coz a friend has it setup. But I could not make it work with the AE 2004.
The latest available firmware is 6.5.3 while on the AE 2008 it is 7.5.2
    Any suggestions?

dirk2gently, welcome to the discussion area!
Unfortunately, your older version of the AirPort Express does not have the capability to "extend a wireless network", so you'll need to use the 802.11n version of the AirPort Express to do what you want to do.
