Airport Express as Bridge

Help!
I've been unable to figure out how to configure an AE to act as a bridge between a Linksys WRTP54G (VOIP) router and a 360 X-Box. The AE bridge is supposed to take the place of an existing/working WEP11 Linksys bridge. The computer linked to the Linksys router is an IBM ThinkCentre running Windows XP and I've been trying to configure the AE with my PowerBook.
Would greatly appreciate a way to get out of the wilderness.
Thank you in advance to your help.
Joe

OK, just purchased another AE and an iPod HiFi. Had a **** of a time connecting the second one as a WDS, but got it to work and thought I'd post the difficulties I had to help you set up the same way.
When I went to select the main base station, all I could see is the first AE I set up. It seems tha the auto entry of the MAC address does not work. I entered it manually but it still would not connect. The second airport appeared to be working but it would not connect up to the rest of the network. I started checking through the settings for the first to see what was different and noticed that it had a different MAC address, but was working. I entered that number, saved my changes and I was up and running.
There is a different MAC address for wireless than for wired on the Linksys router and you need to make sure you use the wi-fi MAC address.
To get this to work:
1. Go to the WDS tab and manually enter the wi-fi MAC address into the field. It should be listed on the wi-fi status page of the Linksys configuration.
2. Make sure you turn off distribute IP addresses on the AE.
3. Set network name and channel to match your Linksys.
4. Make sure that you have WEP encryption set correctly or that your network is open. It might be easier to set it up open first to get it working and then turn WEP on to eliminate one set-up difficulty. Once you know you have a working network, you can then tackle getting WEP configured correctly.
It's much less of a headache to configure the AE with a wired connection to the one ethernet port, especially if you get something wrong the first time. You should still be able to get the utility to work through ethernet but might not be able to through wi-fi if something is not right.
You can set up multiple configurations on the AE. I would reccomend setting a second configuration. This way, you can always go back to what is working for you now if you get totally frustrated and then go back to attempting to get the connectivity you really want when you've taken a break from pulling your hair out.

AirPort Utility is the application that must be used to setup and make any configuration changes to the AirPort Express. I'm not aware of an "App" for this.
If you could borrow a computer from someone there for 30 minutes or maybe use the computer in the lobby, you could download AirPort Utility and reconfigure your Express. To help with setup, use an ethernet cable from the computer to the Express to help AirPort Utility "see" the Express.

  • THe Disk of the Time Capsule cannot be written by Time Machine when an Airport Express is bridged to it by Ethernet

Whenever I add an Airport Express in Bridging Mode to the existing WiFi network of the Time Capsule (both connecting to the same GigaBit Ethernet ADSL modem router, Time Machine (and Finder) cannot backup to the Time Capsule Disk.
(Why do I need to add another Airport Express to the same WiFi network?  Because I want to use the AirPlay jack on the Airport Express to output audio signals.)
If I unplug the power of the Airport Express, everything back to normal.
    What's the problem?

  • Airport express as bridge for surveilance camera

I want to use AEX as bridge between my wireless network and a Lorex LNE3003 wireless surveillance camera. I have a time capsule as router and as it does not support WEP encryption the manufacturer suggest to use AEX as a bridge between the camera and the network. Any ideas how to set this up?

    Welcome to the discussions!
IF you have an Airport Express(n), you will be able to utilize Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature. To check to see whether your device is "n" capable, open AirPort Utility and select your Express. Just to the right there will be a statement that reads "AirPort Utility has found an AirPort Express 802.11n. If you have the older Express is will read "....802.11.
The Express(n) will provide added wireless coverage and the ethernet port on the device will be active to that you can connect to an ethernet device.

  • Anyone used Airport Express as bridge w. wireless router other than Apples?

I have my QS 867 hardwired to my highspeed modem and a Netgear 624GT wireless router attached. My PB has been having trouble with the signal in certain spots due to all the jazz about the alum interfering w. the antenna. When I try to setup the Airport Express with my Netgear network and use the Airport as a bridge/range extender, it does not recogize the Netgear router. It seems to specify in the instructions that you MUST use an Airport Extreme Base Station. Is this true? Has anyone used the Express as a bridge with a wireless router other than the Base Station?

At one point in time I did have an Airport Express working in WDS over WEP with the Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7130. It's unsupported and difficult to get setup. It tends to causes them to lock up and need to be rebooted.
We ended up just dropping the Belkins and getting more Airport Expresses as the Belkins couldn't support doing WDS over WPA (which we've since moved too).

  • Airport Express in Bridge Mode.. No AirTunes, limited functionality

I can only get my internet connection working through my Airport Express (AE) in bridge mode (i.e. the AE connects using 'Ethernet' as opposed to PPoE or WDV).
My computer is then able to connect to the internet using PPPoE.
Interestingly, the amber light is flashing although the internet connection is working fine.
Also, I cannot use AirTunes, and Airport Admin Utility cannot see the Airport Express.
Now, if I go into System Preferences>Network and disable PPPoE and check DHCP instead, I can see the Airport Express in Airport Admin Utility, the light becomes solid green and AirTunes starts working... BUT... my internet connection stops working!
Alternatively, I can now go into Airport Admin Utility and configure the AE to connect using PPPoE. However, no matter what settings I input in System Preferences>Network, the internet connection does not work. However AirTunes does work, the light is green and I can find the Airport in Airport Admin Utility.
It wasn't always like this. Sometime in late November / early December my Airport Express suddenly stopped connecting to the internet. Since then I've been trying very hard to get it working again, with numerous resets etc but its just not happening!
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or what I should do?
Thanks in advance (from a recent Apple convert)

Thanks for the very quick and helpful reply.
However I've tried on numerous occasions to configure the AX to connect to my ISP using PPPoE but it's always "looking for a PPPoE host". In addition, my ISP tells me that when I try and connect through the AX they dont see any requests coming in.
Was there a firmware or similar upgrade sometime in late November or early December of this year? I'm asking because all was fine prior to this period, after which internet through the AX only works in bridge mode, with the amber light flashing and no AirTunes functionality. Perhaps if i roll back the driver/firmware then it will start working again?
Also, is it a limitation of the AX that you cannot use AirTunes or even Airport Admin Utility to configure the AX when the AX is in bridge mode and the computer is not using DHCP to communicate with the AX? That doesnt seem to make much sense to me.

  • Airport express in bridge mode and wrong IP

    Hi all,
my airport express is driving me nuts!! I'm trying to set it up in bridge mode, just to share the printer and to use airplay, bridging the network of my ISP router, that works fine in wifi mode with all my devices (tested with: 2 MacBookPro, 3 iphone, 1 ipad).
The issue is that I configure the AE to join my network (using airport utility), it restarts and works just for few minutes and then it drops the IP, and it turns out to not be visible even for airport utility.
I've noticed that in the summary configuration page of airport utility the IP assigned to the AE is kind of  169.254.X.X that means that the AE is not reciving a valid IP from the router. But, if I press "manual setup" and load the internal configution, in the TCP/IP pannel there is a righ IP number.
But it stops working anyway :-(
I've already tried to configure it with a static IP num (in my IP range), but it did not work as well.
Last thing: my AE is the old one, 802.11g.
    Any suggestion?
thanks in advance and happy new year ;-)

When the AirPort is setup to operate in Bridge Mode, all ports behave as if they were LAN <--> ports, so it would not make any difference which port is used. As a personal preference, and also to aid in troubleshooting, I use the WAN "O" port when configuring a network, if only to know at a glance which cable is which.
The settings on the AirPort are interactive, so when/if you change the Network Mode to "create a wireless network", that will throw the AirPort back into router mode, so always check to make sure that the AirPort is in Bridge Mode as the last step before you click update to save the settings.

  • Airport Express Ethernet Bridging

I have a Mac mini connected to my flat panel TV and I used to use a Graphite base station to connect to it from my iBook G4, naturally the iBook can see the mini but not vice versa (**** Apple firmware).
I have an Airport Express that I stopped using as a print server and wanted to hook it up the same way I had the Graphite Base Station, HOWEVER, it doesn't work. It SAYS in the Airport Admin Utility that Airport to Ethernet bridging is supposed to be in effect, BUT, it doesn't work the way the Graphite Base Station does. Is this another example of Apple creating an artificial limitation in a product, or will this work?
    iBook G4 1.33   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Mid-2005 Model

I have tried this and it does work. You can do this manually from the station you want to use as the relay, but it is a royal pain. Let Airport Admin do the work; set up the relay from the main base station.
To enable bridging mode on the express (ie: the express is connected to a machine with ethernet and you want to then connect the express to the main base so the machine has internet access)
Install your main and remote base stations and power them up (easiest if the remote is reset to factory state)
Launch Airport Admin Utility and connect to the main base station for your network.
On the "WDS" tab, enable the station as a WDS main base station and allow wireless clients.
Click the "+" button to add a remote base station and select your airport express. Leave checked, or check the "Auto configure..." box.
    Click "OK" then "Update"
Read and enter the requested information on the drawer that appears; you are setting information for the remote/bridging station.
Wait for the stations to restart and build the network (about 1-2 minutes).

  • "no valid IP address" error airport express as bridge with Dlink router

    Hi there
I've read through many many posts and am unable to find the answer to my issue. I am trying to use my DLink DR 615 router as my main wireless router and then connect my airport express (brand new - n connection) wirelessly as a bridge. I would then connect my WD Live box to the ethernet port and connect the stereo connection to my receiver for itunes. at least, that's the theory.
Right now, I can't even connect. when I go through the manual process, I selected "connect through wireless network" and left the "configure IPv4" as "using DHCP".
problem is that it comes up as my wireless device does not have a valid IP address. Can someone help me step through how to make this work?
    thanks so much!

Suggest that you start over by holding in the reset button until the amber light blinks quickly. Hold another second or two and release.
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express (AX) to help with the configuration. You can disconnect the cable when you have the AX configured.
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Set Wireless Mode to "Join a wireless network"
(If you don't see this choice, hold down the option key on your computer as you click the selection box)
Wireless Network Name...the name of the wireless network created by your DLink should appear as a choice. Click to select.
Put a check mark in the box to Allow Ethernet Clients
Wireless Security...must exactly match the security settings of your DLink network
Wireless Password...must exactly match the settings of your DLinkk network
Click Update and AX will restart in 15-20 seconds.
You can move the AX to the desired location and hook up the ethernet cable. If your DLink is compatible with the ProxySTA function, you will connect.

  • Making The Airport Express A Bridge

I'm planning on buying an Airport Express to connect a printer and make it wireless since I'm getting the new MacBook Pro and don't want to have to plug it in every time I need to print. What I would like to know is if once the Airport Express is configured to connect wirelessly to my existing network (Cable modem to a Linksys wireless router) would I be able to use the ethernet port (not WAN port) on the Airport Express to connect a device onto the network?

There are a lot of "ifs" here.
I'm planning on buying an Airport Express to connect a printer and make it wireless since I'm getting the new MacBook Pro and don't want to have to plug it in every time I need to print
I assume that you want to connect the printer to the USB port on the Express. Most...but not all....printers will work this way, and Apple does not provide a compatibility list, so this will be a case of you won't know until you try.
What I would like to know is if once the Airport Express is configured to connect wirelessly to my existing network (Cable modem to a Linksys wireless router) would I be able to use the ethernet port (not WAN port) on the Airport Express to connect a device onto the network?
First, the Linksys must be configured to provide a wireless network according to industry standards. You will not be able to use proprietary settings on the Linksys like "wide channels"...or whatever Linksys calls it... or other tweaks known only to Linksys.
Assuming that the Express can "join" the Linksys network successfully,  (it will not "repeat" or "extend" the wireless signal)....and...you use an older version of AirPort Utility 5.x.x on your Mac or PC,  (You cannot use an iOS device for this), the Express will have an option to "Allow Ethernet Clients" in the Manual Setup.
If successful, both Ethernet ports....LAN and WAN....will operate as LAN ports in Bridge Mode.
So, before you buy.....make sure that you understand the store's return policy.

  • Airport Express as Bridge = Connected Device gets no IP Address

I just purchased an Airport Express with 802.11n to use as a wireless bridge to my Airport Extreme with 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet). I've got the Express joining the Extreme's network just fine.
I'm not able to get an IP Address via DHCP when I connect a device (iMac or Sony VAIO Laptop) to the Express' ethernet port. I also connected a device (ReadyNAS) with a static IP address to the Express and could never communicate with the ReadyNAS either.
Under the "Wireless" tab in the Airport Utility I have "Join a wireless network" selected and the "Allow Ethernet clients" checkbox selected on the Express.
Both ethernet and wireless clients (including the Express) are correctly assigned IP Addresses from the Extreme.
This is a brand new Airport Express with 802.11n with current firmware:7.4.2
The Extreme Base Station is set to "802.11n (b/g compatible)" mode.
I'm using a standard Cat5E patch cable not a crossover cable.
    Thanks for the help!

I apologize for taking up your time. I had bought this to use with my PS3 (60GB Launch model with 802.11b) but hadn't used the PS3 in the equation yet. I kind of gave up on the project for awhile and unplugged the Express. Just for giggles I plugged it in later and cabled it up to the PS3 for the first time. Worked perfectly. Now my PS3 downloads are flying.
I'm not sure what solved the problem but it is working great now! Thanks again for the help.

  • Trouble with airport express as bridge

trying to use airport express to network a unique device and I'm going nowhere fast. I would appreciate it if there was someone that could help me wrap my head around this!
in my backyard I use an Automatic Temperature Control Device, called the Stoker, with my smoker. the airport express should be able to connect to the device and ideally, I can be inside on rainy days and via a web browser on my macbook I can control and monitor the temperature of the smoker.
these are the words the product uses:
it has an "Integrated web-server. Plug the Stoker into your network and monitor and control your cooker from anywhere you have Internet access."
in the literature it suggests that I can do this wirelessly
given that I have a linksys router which distributes the dsl throughout my house via ethernet and also wirelessly on the upper floor. I've used one airport express to create another network on the ground floor nearest the smoker.
at this point I'm confused about whether I should configure the ground floor airport express in a different way first and then configure the one in the backyard connected to the device as a bridge or in some other way?
if you're curious ... this is the device I'm trying to connect to my network wirelessly. http://rocksbarbque.com/
fyi ... it worked effortlessly when I tried it hardwired via ethernet to the network.
thanks to anyone that can help!!

Hello Vincent Mazeau. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
In order to enable the Ethernet port on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to get network connectivity to your Stoker, the AX would need to be configured as either a Relay/Remote in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
You could set up a WDS between your AX in the house (as the base) and the one outside (remote).

  • Need help setting up airport express as bridge (Any help is appreciated)

Hello so before my wifi was switched I was able to use my 802.11g airport express as a wifi card for the xbox 360. I then decided to upgrade my main base station from an 802.11g base station to and airport extreme 802.11n. My problem is that my airport express cant extend the airport extreme network to my xbox anymore because they are different 802.11 versions. So can anyone help me configure this so I can get this back? Any help is appreciated.
    My Current Setup:
Internet => Airport Extreme 802.11n => Wireless => Airport Express 802.11g (to extend network for xbox)=> Ethernet => Xbox 360
    Thanks!

As I said, WDS is a nightmare for most users. Apple hides the settings from users to discourage use of WDS.
I do not recommend that you do this, but have a feeling that you will do this anyway.
I will not be able to help you sort out WDS problems.
On AirPort Utility 5.6, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Wireless Mode selection box and the WDS settings will appear
Apple's instructions for WDS are here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4262
    Hope this helps. Good luck.

  • [Porblem] Airport express in bridge mode

    Hello all,
    It's my first post
I've got a problem using my all new airport express 802.11n...I explain, I've got a airport extreme base station(Fast ethernet) in mode n (channel 36) and I would like to connect my xbox(not a 360) using wireless...
I bought the airport extreme(so also in 802.11n) and I setup it as "extend my network" enter the passphrase etc and finally connect through a regular RJ45 my xbox and my airport express
The result is that I can connect my private network using my xbox but with very slow speed...2 MByte/sec...
    I expect better speeds using n mode...normally it's 130Mbit/sec ...I'm really far from this speed...but very close from a 802.11g ...maybe that's normal..
Maybe someone can explain my how to increase the speed...
I'm using 7.3.1 for both of my airports (express and extreme)
Also, someone know where to find the older firmware???
    Thanks all in advance.
    Ed

Hmmm... I would say that this should work. I've got a Dual-Band network, and my sons' 360 is connected to my AEBS-g network via an AX-g and a Gigabit ethernet switch. The 360, 2 ReplayTVs and a DIRECTV HR20 all run fine on the g network.
One thing I've done is to run my AEBS-n at 5 GHz, n only to minimize any interference between the two networks.
Now that Apple finally upgraded the AX to n, I'm seriously considering upgrading my AX-g's to n and I would expect that the 360 should work.

  • Airport Express in bridge mode: has a green light but..

But it's not showing up as a connection on my iPad, or any device for that matter.
I have a linksys e1000 as a wireless router, which is connected to a little black black via Ethernet.
I plugged in my airport express and set it up through my iPad as an addition to a current network(extend the range). I named it 'xxxxx extended' and set a password for it.
Then it says it's complete and the light is green. So all should be fine but it's not letting me connect, it's not even showing up as an option in the wifi settings.

First, an Airport can NOT "extend" the WiFi created by a non-Apple device.  Period.
An Express can "extend" the WiFi created by another Airport.  You need TWO Airport units, one to function as the main radio and the other to function as an extender.  I used two Express units.
Configuration is simple if you start from a factory default condition.  Connect the main Airport to AC power and finally to the Internet modem (or modem/router).  Open Airport Utility on your Mac or other computer and accept all of the recommendations.  After confirming that it works, insert your desired administrative and WiFi passwords.
Then connect the extender to AC power.  As before, open Airport Express on your Mac or other computer and accept all of the recommendations.  No need to add password info.
Do not expect the Airport to respond instantly to the configuration commands.  BE PATIENT!
