Airport Express as Router?

Does the Airport Express assign IP addresses?  Is the Airport Express a router?

Insure that the Router Mode is set for DHCP and NAT.

  • How to configure Airport Express N router and Netgear G router with Extreme

I have a primary Netgear G router (WRT54G) connected to my cable modem box. I have an Airport Express N router streaming music in another room and also extending the wireless network.
I am planning to demote the Netgear router as a switch + wireless network extender connected to my home theater setup (dish+apple tv+ps3) and purchase a new dual band Airport Extreme connected to the cable box and acting as the main router.
My question is if its possible for the N devices to still use N network while the G devices not demoting the whole wireless network to G? That's the reason why I want the Extreme. If yes, how to go about doing it? If not, I will just buy a cheap switch and use that for the Home theater and leave the current setup alone. Anyone who has a similar network, please advice. Thanks!

My question is if its possible for the N devices to still use N network while the G devices not demoting the whole wireless network to G?
Yes. To do so, you would need to connect the Netgear to the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) by Ethernet, and then, reconfigure it as a bridge (disable both its NAT & DHCP functions).
In this configuration, the AEBSn & AXn can provide the 802.11n network and the Netgear can provide the 802.11g network.

  • What is the transfer rate of an airport express extreme router?

I am buying a router and I could not locate (in the package) the transfer speed rate of an airport express extreme router.  Does anyone know how they compare to other commercial routers, from say Cisco?

Yes it is interesting to look at the speed of technological advance.  I first started using an Apple about 30 years ago when they had floppy discs rather than hard drives.  Mine had two floppy disc drives so I could work all day without swopping discs (single disc drives needed you to swop the data disc and the programme disc every so often as the Ram on the machine was limited.  Since then I have up-graded every 4 to 5 years (approximately every other operating system upgrade)
Before that, in the 1970's we were changing from slide rules to electronic calculators which got steadily better and cheaper.  The early Anita Calculator (with valves) cost as much as a small car - now they give simple calculators away with Christmas Cards.
I wonder how much further the technology behind the home computer will go before further advances, like those in calculators, become pointless from the user's point of view.  Maybe it will take another 10 years or so but once everything we want to do is incorporated into a voice driven computing device possibly storing data in the cloud, then it will be the reliability of the components that will be the benchmark of a good system and having the latest "fastest" model will be far less important.

  • Is Airport Express a router

With all this information out there I can't seem to find a straight answer so maybe someone can help.
Is the Airport Express a router with just one ethernet port, or is the point or a router that you can have more than one port.
I am thinking of buy the sonos digital music system http://www.sonos.com/
however as far as I can tell the first unit needs to connect to the ethernet cable on the Express then subsequent others can connect wirelessly.
There is also some info at this address with regards to routers with no ports available but I still can not understand it
    https://sonos.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/sonos.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=193
I would really like to know if I have to buy lots of additional components before I invest in this system]
    Thank A LOT
    Jo

Most so-called wireless routers are actually wireless+wired routers, meaning that both wireless and wired machines can connect directly to them.
When configured as a router, the Airport Express is a wireless-only router. You can directly connect wireless machines to it but not wired machines.

  • I have the airport express as router can I buy the new airport express and use my old airport to extend my net?

I have the airport express as router can I buy the new airport express and extend my net?

Things can get confusing pretty quickly since there are 3 different versions of the AirPort Express.
If by "old", you mean you have Model No A1084 or A1088 AirPort Express (look at the label on the side of the device for the Model No), it cannot be used with the "Extend a wireless network" feature of other newer Apple routers.
If your AirPort Extreme is "square" shaped with rounded corners, then the "old" AirPort Express will not work with your AirPort Extreme using the "Extend a wireless network" settings.
You could use a "previous version" AirPort Express, Model No A1264 to "Extend", or the "new" AirPort Express, Model No A1392, for that purpose.
If your AirPort Extreme is a simultaneous dual band product, then the "new" Express would be able to "extend" both bands.  The "previous" AirPort Express (Model A1264) would be able to extend only one band, since it is not a dual band device.

  • Can I play ipad / iphone etc direct to airport express without router or internet?

Can I play ipad / iphone etc direct to airport express without router or internet?

Something must produce a wireless signal to do what you want.
The AirPort Express is a router.
Is it possible to configure the AirPort Express to "create a wireless network" and then ignore the messages informing you that you do not have an Ethernet cable plugged into the Express, and do not have an Internet connection / DNS service.

  • HT4259 Q: Can I use an older Airport Express-g router (not -n) to extend my Airport Extreme-n wireless network? If Yes, are the instructions the same as for adding an Airport Express-n router?

Q: Can I use my older Airport Express-g router (not -n) to extend my Airport Extreme-n wireless network? If Yes, Are the instructions the same as for adding an Airport Express-n router?

If you want to extend, using wireless only, the 802.11g Express doesn't support this.
However, if you want to use bridge mode over Ethernet or Powerline adapters then this is supported.

  • Problems with Airport Express in Router mode

    Hi all!
I have an Airport Express and a PC home network (WinXP, Win2k and one Powebook). I have Itunes turned off and updated the firmware to 6.3. My Test PC is updated with all the latest updates. All of the Computers have Wifi G cards and are switched to Windows XP zero config wireless.
I tried to configure the AP express both with the config wizard and the manual Airport admin utility on several computers. I have it configured to 128bit WEP security.
I have no proxies or anything of that kind. Also tried disabling all firewall software.
I have a DSL connection with Aztec DSL600E Modem which was previously configured as a fixed line router (its not wireless).
I spent days at it but could not get the AP to replace the modem as router. The modem is configured to use PPPOE/PPPOA (tried both).
When I configure the modem to stop being a router (I think this is done by selecting its "Server and Relay Off"
option (it has either Server on, Realy on, or the above) in the Modem's DHCP configuration screen.
Well when I do this, and configure the AP to distribute IP addresses (share a single IP) and "connect using PPPOE" connection, its light goes green but none of the computers can browse the internet, it just goes to "page not found" after a while. The PC's also then report a conflict in IP address.
On the other hand, if I restore the modem to act as router, configure the AP as a Wifi bridge-to use Ethernet and not to distribute IP's, internet does work but slower than normal. (Not bandwidth, its the DNS lookup that slows things down I think, whenever trying to go to a new web address it takes several seconds to look it up before it says "web page found" on the bottom of the IE browser). If I disconnect the Wifi and connect one of the clients directly to the DSL modem, the DNS lookup takes seconds.
I tried clearing the Cache, resetting the AP, doing IPconfig /release and /flushdns etc.
Internet speed tests like DSL Speed test report latencies of 800ms sometimes.
So i'm thinking that there is some conflict in the DNS or DHCP between the modem/router and the AP.
What is better? leave it as is or try to get the AP to act as router and the modem as only a modem?
All of my clients are set up to have automatic TCPIP configuration with DHCP.
    Also I wanted to ask:
    1) What does "domain name" and "DHCP client id" in the AP Admin utility / internet tab?
My modem config screen has a "Management IP" section with:
    IP Address: 10.0.0.138
    Netmask: 255.0.0.0
    Default Gateway:xxxx
    Hostname: xxxxx
    Domain Name: xxxx
Are the last two the same as the AP refers to as domain name as DHCP client ID?
and why do I need a domain for just a home network?
and why are the last two fields full in the modem screen if I don't have a domain?
    2) From what I remember of routers, they should have some place of configuring the peer to peer network name (workgroup) is that what they mean by "hostname" or "domain name"?
The problem is that this Aztec model has no online manual. And the other models Aztec manuals don't go to such advanced details. And my ISP doesn't give support for sharing with routers (it is allowed but not supported). They will just say buy our monthly plan with WIFI etc.
I would like to share files as well as internet access.
    3) What does the "Enable default host" option mean in the AP config network tab?
    4) What does the "Relay on" field mean in the Modem/router DHCPConfig screen?
    5) How do I ensure there is no conflict between the AP and modem/router, and that they use the most efficient method for looking up DNS's?
Attached are links to screenshots of my configurations.
    http://new.photos.yahoo.com/nebula3012/album/576460762403680970
(double click the pics to open them).
It seems so complicated, a few years ago I set a 3COM Wifi router in a PC environment (Cable Internet) and was working within hours.
by the way in the AP config summary it all looks normal except the "LAN MAC Address" which is empty.
Thank you for your help... ** really..

nebula3012, Welcome to the discussion area!
    1) What does "domain name" and "DHCP client id" in the AP Admin utility / internet tab?
If those items are needed, your ISP will provide them to you.
    2) From what I remember of routers, they should have some place of configuring the peer to peer network name (workgroup) is that what they mean by "hostname" or "domain name"?
    No
    3) What does the "Enable default host" option mean in the AP config network tab?
It allows you to configure a device as a server. All of the ports of that device will be directly addressable from the internet.
    5) How do I ensure there is no conflict between the AP and modem/router, and that they use the most efficient method for looking up DNS's?
You worry too much. There is nothing special to do.

  • Airport express causes router crash

My air port crashes my wifi network. I am trying to connect the airport wirelessly to my Mac solely for AirPlay. Also, my Mac does not "see" my airport express?  Help, please!,

When the AirPort Express is configured for AirPlay, it simply "joins" the existing wireless network....just like a computer or any other wireless device would join a wireless network.
It's hard to imagine how this would cause a network to crash...but I suppose anything is possible.
Here's what we do not know.....and need to know to provide some help.
    1) What version of the Express that you have?
Locate the model number on the side of bottom of the Express and post back with that info.  The mode number will start with an "A" followed by four numbers.
    2) What version of operating system your Mac is using?
Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac to see the OS X Version number.  Post back with that info.
    3) What device is providing your wireless network now?
    Make?  Model Number?
    4) What type of wireless security setting that the current wireless router is using.?
The Express is expecting a setting of WPA/WPA2 Personal. If your wireless router does not use that type of setting, the Express will not connect.
With some basic information, we can begin to troubleshoot the problem.

  • Different Protections with Airport Express & Belkin Router?

Okay...this is an odd question, but if someone can help I'd be so grateful...
My Mac Mini is hooked up in my den to my Belkin wireless router using WPA protection. I use my iBook in another room wirelessly with no problem.
I recently got a Nintendo DS Lite, but unfortunately it doesn't connect to any networks using WPA protection, only WEP. Since WPA is much better, I don't want to leave WEP as my default, so I've been manually changing the protection on the router to WEP when I want to play the DS Lite and switching it back when I'm done.
My question is, if I purchased an Airport Express, would I be able to have it connect to the internet and have it set at WEP so my DS could access it, while leaving the rest of my devices on WPA?

My question is, if I purchased an Airport Express, would I be able to have it connect to the internet and have it set at WEP so my DS could access it, while leaving the rest of my devices on WPA?
If you configured the AirPort Express to use WEP, all wireless devices would need to use WEP to connect to it.
One possible solution is to have the Belkin use WPA to encrypt it's wireless network and then have the AirPort Express create a separate wireless network protected by WEP. However once you did this, anyone breaking the WEP network would have access to the internet and the rest of your network. To use this solution:
Leave the Belkin router the way it is.
Configure the AirPort Express to have a different network name, use WEP, and operate a channel 3 or more away from the one used by the Belkin router.
Connect the AirPort Express to one of the LAN ports on the Belkin.
Depending on the physical location of all of this, the AirPort Express and Belkin may interfere with each other and cause slow network speeds or intermittent network access.

  • Connect airport express to router wifi not apple

I already have a wifi router is not Apple, I have already configured iPhone and iMac to wirelessly, now I need to connect my hi-fi via an airport express (via wifi of course) I can connect "airport express" to a wifi router does not Apple via wifi?

now I need to connect my hi-fi via an airport express (via wifi of course) I canconnect "airport express" to a wifi router does not Apple via wifi?
Yes, the AirPort Express can "Join" virtually any wireless network if you know the name of the network, the exact type of wirelss security that is being used on the network and the wireless network password.
The Express will work for AirTunes and/or allow you to connect a printer when it is configured this way.
But....the Express cannot provide any additional wireless coverage for the network when it is configured to "Join" the network, so it will not "repeat" or "extend" the wireless network in this type of setup.

  • Conncect airport express to router

Had to rename (SSID) my Experiabox (router) and set a new password. How do I reconfigure my Airport Express and thus reconnect it to the Experiabox (in my case)?

Perform a factory default reset on the AirPort Express to get it back to default settings, just like it was when it was new.....and then configure the Express again to connect to your "new" network.
    To do this....
Power off the Express for a minute
Hold in the reset button on the Express first, and keep holding it for an additional 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Express
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the Expresss to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Now configure the Express again to join your "new" network, just like you did when you originally set it up to join your "old" network.

  • Airport Express/wifi router/iTunes Home sharing/iDevices - no shared library

    iTunes on Mac mini.
Home sharing enabled on mini and iPhone & iPad.
Mac mini connected with ethernet to Quest DSL wifi modem/router.
I can see Shared library and content (videos and music) on iPhone/iPad.
Little Snitch shows iPhone/iPad connecting to iTunes.
If I connect the Mac mini via wifi to Quest DSL, the Shared library shows up on the iPhone/iPad but no content.
Little Snitch shows no connection to iTunes.
If I connect to the AirPort Express via ethernet or wifi, I see Shared library but no content.
Turned off both Little Snitch and Firewall but nothing works.

    Finally figured it out...
Had the DNS for wifi connection on the Mac mini set to the two OpenDNS servers but not to the AirPort Express.
I added the address for Airport Express but it did not fix it right away.
I turned off wifi then 'dscacheutil -flushcache' in Terminal, turned on wifi and the shared library content showed up on the iPhone and iPad.
Still don't understand why it would show the library but with no content.

The zillion and one setting to wade through might mean more choices to the tech-heads, but I just wanted it to work.
I don't recall the type of router we had at my previous job, but I just plugged it in, went through a simple set up and forgot about it because it just sat there and worked.
I have had to go back to factory settings and start from scratch with my Extreme many times. The last time the amber light started blinking I just ignored it for months, because it didn't effect my internet connection, I just lost the ability to get iTunes over to the Express I have hooked up to my stereo.
    BTW, what's a wall wart?
The big box on the cord.

  • Airport Express Router-How to secure it without airport utility

Need help securing my airport express wireless router. I don't have the airport utility. Is there a way to secure the router without it?

Sorry, but no. You will not be able to configure the AirPort without the AirPort Utility. Unlike other routers, the AirPorts do NOT have a web-based administration interface.
You can download a copy of the AirPort Utility directly from Apple Support here.
