Airport Express base station, G3 and G4

Is it possible to use the Aiport Express base station to share the internet (DSL with only one ethernet jack) with an iBook G4 (has airport extreme) and a G3 (want to stay wired on this one)? Sorry if this has already been posted.

The Ethernet cable that goes to the Internet needs to have only Internet traffic on it. If it also has local Mac-to-Mac traffic on it, your ISP will not be happy with you.
The way you assure that only Internet traffic is on that Ethernet cable is with the function of a Router/Gateway. Today, you are using the Router function built into the AirPort Express.
You could turn off that function in the AirPort Express and use the AirPort Express as only a Wireless Access Point. That would require you to get some other box (that has at least two Ethernet ports) to do the Router function. I think the cost of doing that would be under US$50.
Local wiring would come off the "new" router -- one cable to G3; one cable to Airport Express (now set up as a wireless access point); two cables for future expansion.
Alternatively, you could get a "gaming adapter" (Ethernet to Wireless) for a Mac (like your G3) running 10.2 or later. I think that solution might cost more, maybe US$75?

  • Airport Express Base Station: DHCP and fixed IP?

I have some questions about the Airport Express Base Station.
Is it capable of providing fixed assigned IP addresses to certain specified clients, and simultaneously providing other clients with IP addresses using DHCP?
This would be in the context of also using MAC address control -- providing services only to clients whose MAC address is in specified list.
And finally, can it be set to not broadcast its ssid?
    Thanks!

Thanks. This is one of those situations where my language needs to be clearer...
The question is, can the methods be mixed. Some clients manually assigned, and at the same time others configured with dynamic addresses via DHCP. I had another wireless router at one time that was either/or -- all one or all the other, but not mixed.
But as Doug pointed out, the Airport Express discussion group is a better place for this question, so I'll head over there.
FWIW, this question arose when I was using Retrospect Express to back up a wireless client. Retrospect was too dumb to find the client by hostname -- or I was too dumb to figure out how to get it to do it that way -- the only way I could Retrospect to find the machine was by IP address, which meant I needed a static address. Otherwise I'd have to go in and edit the Retrospect configuration every time the client changed IP, and even that wasn't easy.

  • Airport Express Base station: iMac and iBook

I just purchased the Airport Express Base Station. I have an iMac with an Airport Extreme card and an iBook with an Airport card.
I can connect to the internet with the iMac but not with the iBook. The iBook is not even recognizing the airport.
Which is weird because when I first set up the Airport Express Base Station I was able to connect to the internet with my iBook. Then I set up the iMac as a base station, went back to the iBook and couldn't connect to the internet again.
So my iMac can connect to the internet but not the iBook??????

Then I set up the iMac as a base station...
Why did you do that if you have an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)?

  • Airport express base station a1264 was working great.

    Hi
I have airport express base station a1264 and it was working great. Updated to Maverick and the utility now is 6.3.2. It seems now  itunes drops occassionally.
I only want this AX to be a remote Stereo connection for my itunes.  NO INTERNET
Connection goes as follows:  Mac Mini Wifi to AX ---> Toslink to Cambridge Magic Dac100 to RCA to Pre-AMp.  All was great for a couple of years.
Now it drops - annoyingly so!
I tried to update the firmware and then tried to re-configure but I can't seem to get it to ignore INTERNET connection.
It seems to work - but the MAC MINI has the exclamation over the WIFI icon - says no internet connection - which I don't want. Why is it looking for internet. I set up a new network and set the SSID as STEREO WIFI which itunes will connect to....
Do I care about the exclmation point? Never saw it - ...
    THanks

Locate the reset button, which is a small, circular gray, flush button near the connectors. (See the diagram on page 7 of this manual: http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/AirPort_Express_SetupGuide.pdf .)
Press in on that button while you plug it in. Continue to press for maybe 20 seconds. If you don't see any sign of the status light flashing during that time, then your Express may be dead.

  • Hey, I have a AirPort Express Base Station ( 2nd Generation ), and I wanted to ask that if I join my network at home with the Express Station, will it still run the 2.5 GHz and the 5.0 GHz?

Okay, well I have just bought a AirPort Express Base Station ( 2nd Generation ) and I'm new to it, but I wanted to ask that if it join's a network you have setup at home, will it still run with the 2.4 GHz and the 5.0 GHz.

The AirPort Express will "extend" both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks and provide more wireless signal coverage when it is connected to another Apple AirPort router and configured correctly.
The AirPort Express cannot provide more wireless coverage though, if you are trying to connect it to another 3rd party wireless router using wireless only.
It should be possible to set up the Express to provide more signal coverage if you connect it back to the main router using a wired Ethernet connection or using Ethernet powerline adapters.

  • Airport Express Base Station and HP Laserjet 1020 printer connected

    Dear all,
I have a Laptop (PC) Sony Vaio PCG-Z1XSP and an Airport Express Base Station which work perfectly together (internet access and I-tunes). I recently bought a printer HP Laserjet 1020 and connected it to the Airport Express USB soket. I managed to make it work and print a couple of times, but as soon as I turn off the printer or the computer or Airport Express, the next time I want to print, it doesn't work anymore.
The Airport Admin Utility recognises the printer (I can see it listed). I have updated the Airport Express software to the Firmware version 6.3 as well as downloaded the latest driver available on HP's website for my printer. I've also substituted the USB cable. Can anybody help me here? Thank you very much and best regards.

    Hallo everybody,
Thanks for all the answers. I have contacted HP's chat online and gone through the problem with 3 different technicians. I've tried a lot myself too. The issue was partially solved by restarting the printer spooler, i.e. stop, then start and then restart it.
However after I was so happy that the printer worked, I turn off everything. When I turn on again, it was not working anymore. Then I tried to see by exclusion what the problem is, I had to restart the Hardwar I don't know how many times.
    Conclusion:
    1. The USB cable must be plugged into the airport express before turning on anything.
    2. Turn on the printer first.
    3. Turn on the airport express and the computer.
    4. If you try to print it doesn't work, even if you reset the airport express through the airport express utility software. The printer is recognized and appears in it though.
    5. Disconnect the USB cable from the airport express and connect it to the PC directly.
    6. Print a document.
    7. Disconnect the cable and reconnect it to the airport express.
    8. Now you should be able to print wireless. You may need to reset the airport expresst with the utility softwar, but I managed to print without having to do it.
    9. The pörinter works even if you turn off and on again the computer, or you suspend the windows session and restart it, or if you put it in standby and restart it.
    10. The printer works even if you turn off the airport express and the computer, or the airport express alone and restart them/it.
    11. The printer doens't work anymore if you turn it off and onn again. In such a case you have to plug in/out as discribeb above.
Solution: Leave the printer always on, or make the plug in/out every morning when you start the computer and print one page direclty before being able to print wireless.
Does anybody have a solution to this problem? I mean it prints, but it is annoying to plug in/out every day, no?
HP's technician says that it is not a recommanded solution the HP Laserjet 1020 with the airport express, since the printer works on a host based server basis... I mean it is easy to say that, but one expects to buy a printer that works always and not to have to plug in/out everyday, restart spooler and so on.
Can anybody comment or suggest anything I can do to avoid this? Thank you and I hope this helps others too.

No, and that shouldn't be done with an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.

  • I have got a Airport Extreme Basestation and an 3 x Airport Express Base station.

    Hi
I have a netgear modem. Would like help with how to create one network with strong wireless signal all around the house and the gym outside. I basically know how I will setup the Airport Extreme and One Express ( for streaming music from Itunes ). How to use the other two Expresses to extend the wireless side of the network to have a strong signal all around the residental area.
    Please help

Not knowing your exact building floorplan, I would start with the following basic setup of your AirPorts:
Connect the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) to the Netgear router by Ethernet.
Reconfigure the AEBSn as a bridge.
Configure the AEBSn for the option "Allow this network to be extended" enabled.
Configure each of the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn) with the option "Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network" enabled.
Both AXns will be connected back to the AEBSn by wireless.

  • Connecting to multiple Airport Express base stations for internet and TV?

I want to be able to use wireless internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time, but I only have a single ethernet connection behind my stereo and it's connected to the Pay TV. My options seem to be an ethernet splitter (maybe - any ideas?), getting a new ethernet connection installed behind the stereo so I can insert this into the same Airport Express base station I use for my music, or buying a second Airport Express base station and connecting it to one of the other internet connections in the room, then connecting to both Airport Express base stations at the same time.
Is this possible? Are there other alternatives?
    Many thanks

Nate, Welcome to the discussion area!
Once you have a network, you can connect multiple AirPort Express (AX) to that network (wirelessly or via Ethernet). When your computer joins that network it can access all the AX.
You could take your current internet connection and run it into an inexpensive router with multiple Ethernet ports (not the AX). If this is a wireless router then your AXs could be located elsewhere and connect as wireless clients to that network. Once you computer joined that network it could stream music to the AXs.

  • Why have all 3 airport express base stations stopped working, BT have checked and improved line still not working?

Why have all 3 airport express base stations stopped working, other users are on ipads and BT have checked and improved line but I still have an intermittent/no connection?

You must tell us the whole setup.. what is the main router?? How are the express connected to each other?
On ipad it works ok?? But you are on a computer?? MBP early 2011 running Lion?? That doesn't work.. even if you are right next to the main router??
Plugged in by ethernet does it work??
Have you installed a wireless diagnostic program.. ?? Actually Lion has one installed but hidden I believe.
Later version bought it to the surface.
    About Wireless Diagnostics
If you do run Lion please install the 5.6 airport utility as it will give you loads more info on how the units are connected.. and link speeds for extend wireless.
How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

    This AirPort Express:

It is the only Express with 2 Ethernet ports. All others are "old"
Apple does not specify a model number in their product information, but it is A1392 in the U.S. I do not know if Apple uses different model numbers in other countries.

  • Airport Express Base Station and AirTunes

I was given an Airport Express Base Station and I purchased
a PCMCIA wireless card (802.11g). After installation of both items I then upgraded the iTunes software to v4.9. I want to transmit music from my laptop to the Airport Express Base Station. I understand I require the AirTunes software butI cannot find a download site for that application. The CD that came with the Base Station does not have Airtunes (obviously an older version of the application software). Is AirTunes available as a download?
    Thanks

Airtunes support is built in to iTunes version 4.9 - there is no other software you need to download or install. If your PC has been successfully set up to connect to the Airport Express wireless network, a drop down box will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes application window where you can select the place your iTunes should be playing (ie internal speakers, or the Airport Express).
You did not mention either (a) configuring your Airport Express or (b) setting up your PC to connect to the Airport Express wireless network. To do this:
    (a) read the configuration manual for the Airport Express. Then download the Airport 4.2 update for Windows (from Apple's web site) - it provides the latest Windows versions of the Airport Express configuration software.
    (b) to get your PC to connect to the Airport Express wireless network, see the links to "accessing an airport network" provided at:

  • AirPort Express Base Station signal drops on and off

My Airport Express Base Station signal drops on and off about every 2 minutes. It’s quite frustrating. I currently have a Windows XP PC, with a Linksys Wireless Router. I’ve taken several steps as prescribed in the support chats to no avail. I’ve switched channels, updated software/firmware (iTunes, Base Station and my Router), reconfigured my security settings to no security back to my regular security settings, I’ve placed the base station right next to my router in case it was due to interference, I’ve used headphones in the event it was my stereo, I’ve changed different utility settings (interference robustness, stream size, etc). I’ve opted to use the option “Create a Wireless Network” versus “Existing Wireless Network” and back to “Existing Wireless Network”. Again, all to no avail. Can someone offer some insight to help solve this problem? The problem is so annoying that I no longer use the base station.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rene
AirPort Express Base Station   Windows XP

Maybe Windows is trying to get an 802.1x authentication which should be disabled:
Ensure that the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network check box is not checked.

It seems updating Windows XP to Service Pack 2 fixes that.

  • Cannot configure and connect to Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 with Windows 7 (x64)

I am not able to connect Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 with Windows 7 (x64).  I did a factory reset, uninstalled and reinstalled the AirPort Utility for Windows v. 5.6.1.
My objective is to extend a non-Apple WiFi network with Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 and use it for direct ethernet and/ or wireless connection.  Any guidance as to how I can get set up here?

This is very common, we run a mix of mac and various pc brand desktops and laptops, what I have found is that using the windows wireless client rather than manufacturers on some laptops helps, getting the latest wireless drivers from the manufacturer has helped, make sure all your windows updates XP and Vista are current.
If all the above is covered try the different WEP WPA WPA2 variants or even without for test purposes. I have most success with WPA2.
Finally I am assuming your running the latest firmware on the express unit, whilst this hasn't attributed to better connectivity for us I did it regardless.

  • HELP: Airport Express Base Station over PPPoE and Static IP

    Hi there,
I recently purchased a Airport Express Base Station after doing some preliminary research as to wether it would work with my Windows XP Machine.
After finally acquiring it today, I have been trying to set it up with ZERO luck so far.
I open the neat package and plug in the wires as mentioned in the manual and get the AE on. I install the AE software from the CD, my computer recognises the wireless network, all going well.
I setup the airport express using the setup assistant for windows and then open the Airport admin utility. Now here is where I come across the first stumbling block.
My ISP provides each end user with LAN connectivity(primitive), what they do is install a router in every apartment complex and then provide internet through LAN connectivity to every apartment. In doing this they assign each users network adapter a static IP alongwith a lock-in for the MAC address for the specific adapter.
So if you have to change network adapters you have to call them, they release the lock temporarily and you can connect using another adapter without issue.
Another thing they also provide is a Username/password for every apartment user to be able to access the internet once connected. I am not a expert but I am guessing that is what they call PPPoE.
Now I have been trying to setup my Airport Express using the admin utlity but I discovered that it is not possible to specify a Static IP and use PPPoE both together.
How do i get this to work now? .. In addition I have a HP 1010 USB laserjet which I would like to share using my AE, I am guessing I can just create a TCPIP Port for this with the IP of the AE and it should work.
Please help, really require to get this working ASAP with 3 windows machines (2 laptops and 1 desktop)
    Many thanks

Ethernet shows up here because I am using the internet on my computer directly right now.
But the AE is connected and printer and Airtunes is working fine. It still flashes Amber though.
Any other details you require to further analyse the problem? .. I have tried various combinations of basic IP settings. Resets to the AE, restarts to the Computer already. But I am willing to follow any additional instructions you might have for me and provide you any other information you might require.
Many thanks, You should realise that your continuing support is very encouraging and means a lot to me.
