Airport Express base / Windows XP - connecting to an existing network

hi ,
im sure this has been asked a hundred times, but ive spent all day tinkering with my new airpoint express, trying to add it to my existing wifi netgear network.
The Airport Utility can see the apple device, but no matter how i try to connect to it the error message comes up "error occurred, make sure your network is set up " error -4
Now ii just cant understand how it can see the express but then wont let me connect. it connects it seems then takes 30 sec to dectect then fails. arrgh.
The yellow light is flashing on the express, i have reset it , reset my laptop, connected the AE unit to my router with ethernet , and tried again.
Just cannot get it right, ive looked at the network settings but i am not too confident to see where its wrong, MADNESS when it only seems like it should take 5 minutes according to apple! help!?

i should add, i can connect via XP networking to the apple device and suft the web, i just cant set it up for itunes.

How to set up Apple tv on my tv using airport express base without internet connection

In theory you can configure the AirPort Express to broadcast a Wi-Fi network that the Apple TV can connect to. The default configuration of the Express is to broadcast an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. You would then configure the Apple TV to connect to this network.

  • AirPort Express Base Station access to password protected hotel network?

My AirPort is plugged into the hotel network, but it needs a password to then access the internet.  How do I provide that password so I can use the Express as a firewall?

First, you need to know what the password is. Then configure the AirPort Express to join a wireless network and with other settings depending on hotel requirements and what you are wanting to do.

  • Connecting to multiple Airport Express base stations at the same time?

I want to be able to use wireless internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time, but I only have a single internet connection behind my stereo and it's connected to the Pay TV. My options seem to be getting a new line installed behind the stereo so I can insert this into the same Airport Express base station I use for my music, or buying a second Airport Express base station and connecting it to one of the other internet connections in the room, then connecting to both Airport Express base stations at the same time.
Is this possible? Are there other alternatives?
    Many thanks

Nate, Welcome to the discussion area!
Once you have a network, you can connect multiple AirPort Express (AX) to that network (wirelessly or via Ethernet). When your computer joins that network it can access all the AX.
You could take your current internet connection and run it into an inexpensive router with multiple Ethernet ports (not the AX). If this is a wireless router then your AXs could be located elsewhere and connect as wireless clients to that network. Once you computer joined that network it could stream music to the AXs.

  • Using an Airport express base station as a bridge

    Hello,
Sorry if the question has already been asked, but I'm getting nuts...
I have today a XP PC connected to the internet over WiFi (modem + router).
The problem is that router & PC are far one from the other in my house, and I bought this AirPort Express to extend the range of the existing network.
Could someone explain to me how to access to the configuration menu of the Airport to "tell him" that I want to use it as a bridge ?
I think I've done what's requested, but cannot access to any menu (although my PC is connected to the airport WLAN network).
    Thanks in advance

Unless your current router is an AirPort, you will find few non-AirPort routers that will work in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). If your primary base station is an AirPort (Extreme or Express), let me know, and I will provide WDS setup instructions.
You would access the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) setup using either the AirPort Setup Assistant or the AirPort Admin Utility. Both of these come, either on the CD supplied with the AX, or can be downloaded directly from Apple. There is also a Windows version of the AirPort software at the Apple site. • I have two airport express base stations that I want to configure on two separate sets of speakers in two separate rooms. How do I do this? Airport Utility only seems to scan one express at a time.

I am currently running a PowerPC G5 imac and have a wired broadband modem via ethernet with airport wireless network turned on, on the G5. I have the computer in the bedroom and have an airport express wired into a mixer that connects to my stereo. I have recently bought another airport express base station to connect to a pair of active monitors in the kitchen. When I try to scan these on Airport Utility version 5.42 I am only managing to scan one base unit at a time. I have plugged them in separately and reset them, they both have firmware updates, however the utility will only read one at once. I have read that you can link base stations to the same WDS. I would like to know how to go about doing this if it will only scan one airport express at a time. I have looked it up on the net and not found anything that is a simple fix. Can anyone help? In Apple Support it says that multiple Base Stations can be used. I would like to get both Apple Airport Express units to be able play airtunes separately or at the same time depending where I am in my flat. I do not need different music in each room. I would like to stream music from the computer to multiple rooms in the flat without having to continually unplug and configure the Base Stations. Has anyone come across such a challenge? Any help would be welcome.

How do I configure the AX to connect to the hub's wireless network? It will only scan one base station Airport Express at a time in the Airport Utility. I think what I am trying to do is use the hub as a router to the two AX's. Is there a specific way to set this up?
To set up the AX to join a wireless network as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    Launch the AirPort Utility.
    Select the AX.
If not already connected to the AX's wireless network, go ahead and switch to it when prompted.
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Network Name: <type in the network name/SSID of the wireless network that you want to join or select it from the pop-up menu>
Wireless Security: None OR, if you are using security on your wireless network:
Wireless Security: <Select the appropriate level of security for the existing wireless network: WPA/WPA2 Personal | WPA2 Personal>
Password: <enter your wireless network security password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the same security password>
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX.

  • Cannot configure and connect to Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 with Windows 7 (x64)

I am not able to connect Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 with Windows 7 (x64).  I did a factory reset, uninstalled and reinstalled the AirPort Utility for Windows v. 5.6.1.
My objective is to extend a non-Apple WiFi network with Airport Express Base Station Model A1264 and use it for direct ethernet and/ or wireless connection.  Any guidance as to how I can get set up here?

This is very common, we run a mix of mac and various pc brand desktops and laptops, what I have found is that using the windows wireless client rather than manufacturers on some laptops helps, getting the latest wireless drivers from the manufacturer has helped, make sure all your windows updates XP and Vista are current.
If all the above is covered try the different WEP WPA WPA2 variants or even without for test purposes. I have most success with WPA2.
Finally I am assuming your running the latest firmware on the express unit, whilst this hasn't attributed to better connectivity for us I did it regardless.

  • Airport Express Base Station and HP Laserjet 1020 printer connected

    Dear all,
I have a Laptop (PC) Sony Vaio PCG-Z1XSP and an Airport Express Base Station which work perfectly together (internet access and I-tunes). I recently bought a printer HP Laserjet 1020 and connected it to the Airport Express USB soket. I managed to make it work and print a couple of times, but as soon as I turn off the printer or the computer or Airport Express, the next time I want to print, it doesn't work anymore.
The Airport Admin Utility recognises the printer (I can see it listed). I have updated the Airport Express software to the Firmware version 6.3 as well as downloaded the latest driver available on HP's website for my printer. I've also substituted the USB cable. Can anybody help me here? Thank you very much and best regards.

    Hallo everybody,
Thanks for all the answers. I have contacted HP's chat online and gone through the problem with 3 different technicians. I've tried a lot myself too. The issue was partially solved by restarting the printer spooler, i.e. stop, then start and then restart it.
However after I was so happy that the printer worked, I turn off everything. When I turn on again, it was not working anymore. Then I tried to see by exclusion what the problem is, I had to restart the Hardwar I don't know how many times.
    Conclusion:
    1. The USB cable must be plugged into the airport express before turning on anything.
    2. Turn on the printer first.
    3. Turn on the airport express and the computer.
    4. If you try to print it doesn't work, even if you reset the airport express through the airport express utility software. The printer is recognized and appears in it though.
    5. Disconnect the USB cable from the airport express and connect it to the PC directly.
    6. Print a document.
    7. Disconnect the cable and reconnect it to the airport express.
    8. Now you should be able to print wireless. You may need to reset the airport expresst with the utility softwar, but I managed to print without having to do it.
    9. The pörinter works even if you turn off and on again the computer, or you suspend the windows session and restart it, or if you put it in standby and restart it.
    10. The printer works even if you turn off the airport express and the computer, or the airport express alone and restart them/it.
    11. The printer doens't work anymore if you turn it off and onn again. In such a case you have to plug in/out as discribeb above.
Solution: Leave the printer always on, or make the plug in/out every morning when you start the computer and print one page direclty before being able to print wireless.
Does anybody have a solution to this problem? I mean it prints, but it is annoying to plug in/out every day, no?
HP's technician says that it is not a recommanded solution the HP Laserjet 1020 with the airport express, since the printer works on a host based server basis... I mean it is easy to say that, but one expects to buy a printer that works always and not to have to plug in/out everyday, restart spooler and so on.
Can anybody comment or suggest anything I can do to avoid this? Thank you and I hope this helps others too.

  • Anybody use an Apple AirPort Express Base Station (windows)

Im thinking about getting one of these and just wanting people opinions on it working with windows.
Just im a little confused, can i use it as a wireless router insted of my net gear, or will i still have to use my net gear router. My internet comes from the telephone wire if that helps?
    Many thanks James

Hello jshrubb. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since you didn't include the model of your Netgear router, it will be a little hard to determine if the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) could replace all of its functions.
So, here's what the AirPort Express is, and is not to help you decide:
o The AX is an Internet wireless router.
o The AX does not have a built-in modem: DSL, ADSL, Satellite or cable ... so one of these will still be required.
o The AX does not have a built-in Ethernet switch. It does have an Ethernet port, but that ports primary function is to be connected to the modem. However, it could be used to connect a wired client, but only if the AX is reconfigured as either a remote or relay base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). The bottom-line here is that if you need to support wired clients, the AX would not be the appropriate choice for your network.
o The AX does support iTunes audio streaming so that when connected to either a pair of powered speakers or an audio system, you can stream iTunes to speakers wirelessly.

  • Sharing Internet with a windows laptop via ethernet on airport express base

    Hi
I have a Linksys wireless router which is connected to my G5 Imac, I also have an airport express base station. My wife's laptop does not have a wireless card. Can I plug an ethernet cable into the Airport Express base station and get the laptop connected. What is the best way to configure all this. Help will be much appreciated.
    K.

you have 2 choices. Actually three but i would use choice 1.
    1. Set-up the Airport station using DHCP to assign addresses dynamically to connected (or wireless users). The computers must be set to DHCP.
    2. Set-up using Manual IP assignment.....uhm you have to do it manually. Your laptops must be manually assigned IP address via thier network control panels.
    3. The linksys router should do all of the above, but using the Apple software to do the above is easier using set-up assistant.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you do not have both wireless devices trying to do the same thing at the same time!!
One must be set-up as a dumb router/hub.(see your instructions)
    Hope that helps.
Once you are set-up, In order for a PC to sign in, on the Apple base station you have to click on "Password" in the Airport software and have it reveal the "HEX equivalent password (WEP key)" for PC. Your wife would enter this in her PC connection gui.
    Hope this helps
    Norbert

    Wirelessly
Just select the option to make your AirPort Express join an existing network in the setup process

  • I want to re-use my old airport express base station but airport utility doesn't recognise it anymore (it dates from 2005) i would like to use it to connect to my speakers only

I have an old airport express base station from 2005
I would like to have a network on it so i can put it upstairs in a room and connect my speakers to it so i can send my music (from itunes) over the airport to my speakers.
I reset it and now i want to configure but the Airport utility doesn't recognise it anymore.
Can i update the firmware? has it become useless because too old or what can i do?
I work on macbook pro with macOSX 10.9.4
Can someone give me some tips please
    thanks
    J

Please locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. Hard to see.....gray lettering on a white background....so you may likely need a magnifying glass and good lighting to see it.
The model number starts with a "A" followed by four numbers. If you see A1084 or A1088, unfortunately AirPort Utility 6.x in Mavericks OS X (10.9.4) does not support these older models. However, you can still administer these models if you have a Mac.....or can borrow one for a few minutes....using Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC with AirPort Utility installed on the device.

  • Will the AirPort Express Base Station create a wifi connection that will enable me to wirelessly connect to XBOX live on my xbox 360

will the AirPort Express Base Station create a wifi connection that will enable me to wirelessly connect to XBOX live on my xbox 360

Yes, but not in all cases with it provide your with an "Open NAT" condition that some on-line gaming require. However, for most Xbox LIVE access, it should work just fine.

i have a pc and have bought a new airport express base station, i have ordered a new imac G5 and really bought the router for it....but when i tried to set up the pc with the express base station i noticed the rj11 cable doesnt fit into the base station socket...it seems to be an ethernet socket (whatever that is I dunno) can ne 1 tell me what I need to go wireless..(perhaps a brain would help!!)my modem is a bt voyager 105 usb adsl ......help would be gratefully appreciated!!

With the Express, you'll either need a new modem that has an Ethernet port or you need to set up the PC's networking configuration to bridge the USB modem's network to the PC's Ethernet port and then connect the Express to the PC, which would require that the PC be stationary and booted whenever you wanted to access the Internet. I wouldn't have a clue how to accomplish the latter, but it should be doable and you should be able to find information online somewhere.
