Airport express blinking light

Hi, I bought a new modem and ever since I have not been able to connect to it. The cable company thinks there is a problem with my airport as I am able to get on line through the model. The airport express will not release the IP address and configure even when I reset it. So is this a software problem?

Hi wwoodring,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has some steps you can try if you're having trouble with your Airport Express and seeing a blinking light:

  • Airport Express Green Light - Can't Get To Internet

    Hello.
I'm staying at a friends cottage. Their internet works fine (I can connect via ethernet to the internet). I can get the wireless network to work fine using Airport Express (green light on AX, shows network signal in menu bar).
When I try and connect to the internet via AX it fails.
I am using WPA2 Personal for the password.
    Am I missing something simple?
    Thanks in advance.
Hello... I tried to find this before I asked, but I couldn't narrow the search enough to find an answer... I'm sorry if this has been asked a lot before.

I am connected directly from the back of the modem to the ethernet on the AX.
So you're replacing the friends' equipment (if any) with your AX? Some questions:
    1) Did you remove power from the modem for several minutes before you connected your AX? Some modems will refuse to connect to a "new" device until they're reset by that process.
    2) How is your AX configured? Settings in AirPort Utility of particular interest are AirPort panel, Wireless tab, Wireless Mode and Internet panel, Internet Connection tab, Connection Sharing.

  • Airport Express status light is flashing yellow

My Airport Express status light is flashing yellow. It has worked in the past, but not recently. I thought it might be a location problem so I moved it to within 6 ft of the computer and it is still happening. I tried the reset button and that didn't do anything. Any other ideas?

    "I tired the reset button"
Have you done a factory reset?

  • Airport Express- Amber Light Blinking - Nothing works!

Looking for Henry B. (or anyone else with a bright idea).
A few days ago, no airport connection from my PB G4. I have had the same setup for the last year and a half without a problem - Airport 802.11b to AXP to T1 connection to/from my wall (no modem or router, etc.).
Problems started with the no-connection. Clicking on the Airport icon in the toolbar gave me the endless spinning wheel. Hard shut down, which I NEVER have to do. In the last four days, I've done hard shut downs about 30-50 times.
AXP: had a green light. Unplugged for 20 seconds, plugged back in to a green light. Did a soft reset, thinking something had to change so the PB would see the AXP. Amber blinking light. Hard reset. Amber blinking light. Factory default reset: Amber blinking light. Every time, the PB doesn't see the AXP or an Apple Newtork XXXXXX.
Plugging the ethernet cable from the wall directly into the PB works great. Called the ISP, great technician could see my connection, said everything was fine on their end and that they do not limit any wireless/router equipment usage.
Again, not a single problem until a few days ago.
With all the crashes, I saw that some Finder crashes were involving Application Enhancer. I had Application Enhancer until an hour ago - uninstalled it. Didn't help. Also read about StuffIt AVR causing problems bu thaven't located any file with that name.
Henry B., if you're out there, please send me a miracle cure.
    Cheers all,
    Jason

clicking Airport icon shows no available networks (i used to see some of the meighbors' networks sometimes. so i can't seem to connect wirelessly.
have another graphite iBook clamshell running Panther. didn't mention this earlier, but that computer has been acting similar to mine since the same day a few days ago. i just opened airport setup assistant and have the spinning ball for the last four minutes.
again, both computers worked fine until that day. the only things i could think of that would cause this coincidence are power surge, virus, or something to do with airport. PB is working fine now, after 4-5 restarts today. iBook now seems frozen.

  • Airport Express Amber Light Keeps Blinking

    Hello,
Just bought an Airport Express yesterday and have been having headache trying to set it up. I would love to set it up as a wireless internet connection, so I can browse on my iPod Touch. Have followed all the steps on the Setup Guide, including turning my modem off.
I can access wireless connection on my Ipod Touch (it's showing the ID number which match with my AX) , but it seems like I am unable to connect the internet to my PC which is a Compaq (4 years old).
When I open Airport Utilities it always comes up with a message unable to scan AX. Not sure what else to do and thinking of returning this AX to the store before the due date. Please if anyone has any advise or suggestion I would really appreciate your help

  • Airport express Green light on, itunes transmitting, internet not working

    Hi,
I have a thinkpad running XP and a cable/telephony modem from comcast. I installed the airport express following the directions and got a blinking amber light and no functioning internet or airtunes. I then took down the IP address, router address, etc (IP Address: 66.30.116.41 Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0 Default Gateway: 66.30.112.1
DHCP Server: 68.87.71.8 DNS Servers: 68.87.71.226, 68.87.73.242) from my modem and manually configured those settings into my airport express, and now I have a green light and am able to transmit itunes but can't access the internet. My computer connects to the network but then I can't load any pages. When I try "repair," it fails when reconnecting to the network. The IP adress when I'm connected to AX begins with 10.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • Airport Express Blinking Amber after Lightning

I have an Airport Express older plug in brick model I bought in 2012 that has a blinking amber light I cannot fix and need help. Lightning struck near my house the other day and took out 3 lights, power for a few hours, and fried my DSL modem. I assumed it hit a telephone pole as all my electronics are on surge protectors and the modem probably fried due to the telephone line in. So after getting a new DSL modem through Yahoo Japan, my Airport has a blinking amber light. It does not show up in the Airport utility on my MBP, and does not show up on my iPhone. I’m running Mountain Lion on my MBP and using 6.1 Airport Utility, my iPhone is running iOS7. When I run the utility, I see nothing, and nothing in the drop down for other networks, I’ve done soft, hard, and factory resets on the Airport. All of which glow steady amber, then switches to blinking, but I cannot see it to set it up. Internet from the new modem works fine, I’ve tested the line direct to my MBP. And the modem is almost the same as my previous just a newer model. But I should see it regardless if it has internet connected to it right? So is there a way to direct connect to the Airport via Ethernet or USB to set it up, or did the lightning probably fry something inside the Airport as well and I’m SOL and need to somehow get a new one in Japan? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

You have done a factory reset .. that is the only reset that had a chance to work and get it going. What is wrong is not clear.. as it is blinking which shows something is working.
So is there a way to direct connect to the Airport via Ethernet or USB to set it up, or did the lightning probably fry something inside the Airport as well
You can plug it into a Mac or PC by ethernet. Do another factory reset on it.. but you must use the older 5.6 utility.. the new utility seems to be quite useless in finding a TC that is not configured by ethernet.. whereas the old utility had no issues at all. You can load 5.6 onto Mountain Lion or Lion.. but Mavericks is bad news.
    Otherwise..
It is toast.. buy a new one.

  • Slow Airport Express blinking green - network traffic when all devices off?

My G5 imac and airport express are lightning fast when everything boots up, slow as molasses later. The airport express is 3 feet away from my G5, and hooked up by ethernet to a cable modem.
I've also noticed that my airport express is blinking green, showing network traffic, when both my imac and ipad are turned off - even though I have the airport express set to be hidden, password protected and limited to certain airport IDs. Is it possible that my airport are being hijacked, or is there another reason for the variability in speed? My MacScan and iAntiVirus report no malware or cookies or viruses.
imac intel Mac OS X (10.6.4) airport express 5.5.1

I've also noticed that my airport express is blinking green, showing network traffic, when both my imac and ipad are turned off - even though I have the airport express set to be hidden, password protected and limited to certain airport IDs.
The cable company sends continuous, almost non-stop garbage down the line. The tech guy at the cable company would say that the devices are "associating". That's why you see the green light flashing. You might want to turn off the "flash on activity" option and simply have it glow solid green...unless you like to watch the flashing, or you want to switch to DSL.
Try turning off the anti-virus to see if that helps wireless perform better. Most anti-virus applications do more harm than good. Otherwise, look for wireless interference from another nearby wireless network, cordless phone, or even that new security system at the neighbors.

  • Airport express, green light but not working.

while streaming music to airport express, it suddenly stops. Green light on AE, but connection with wireless net is gone. iPad airport express app tells that the AE was in a network and isn't anymore. Only way to get it back working is power off/on. Sounds familiar? Any tips what can be the issue?

Is the AirPort Express the only wireless router in your current network configuration or is it configured to "join" another wireless network for streaming. If there is another wireless router, where is the Express placed in relation to it ... same room, different room, different floor?
When streaming from your iPad, is it in the same room, different room, or different floor than the Express?

  • Airport express Blinks Yellow After Setup

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find the answer.
I'm running windows xp on my desktop and have a DLink wireless router.
I'm trying to use airport express to stream music to my stereo. I've had it up and running in the past, but my airport has been unplugged for the last month and now it's stopped working.
I've set everything up with through the Admin utility with my airport connected to my router via ethernet.
Everything is fine until I click to update, the airport restarts, then nothing... just a flashing yellow light.
If anyone could point me in the right direction or tell me what I 'm doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried reseting it and starting from a clean slate? Set it up and then post back.

  • Airport Express No light/power ?

the light on airport express is off, swopped the powerplug bit for my powerbook one no difference, changes power sockets no change, is it bust ? Or is there something else i can try...

Sorry for the reposting from the locked thread, but as stonecutter is from the UK, this is what you have to do over here!
f you are in the UK:
    1) Your complaint is with the seller, not the manufacturer (unless you bought from the Apple Store.)
    2) It is irrelevant if the item is outside of its guarantee (a guarantee is an extension to your existing rights.) Your complaint is under the 6 year period (5 years in Scotland) of statutory rights afforded by the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended.) This states that items must be of satisfactory quality and durability.
    3) You must write, registered delivery, to the seller and state the above and claim that the item was not of satisfactory quality and, by the very fact that it stopped working after xx months, not durable. You must claim that a reasonable person would expect an electrical item, which cost £xx, to last longer than xx months.
    4) You can mention this discussion board, hardmac.com etc. to show that this is not a "one off."
    5) You must ask the seller to provide you with a refund, a replacement or a repair. Because you have had some use of the item, the seller may make a reduction from the original price when refunding the money.
    6) Give them 14 days to reply.
    7) Get in touch with consumer direct: 08454 04 05 06, who are very helpful and can refer a seller on to trading standards.
    8) The seller may tell you that after 6 months it is up to you to prove that the product was faulty, this is true. BUT do not get somebody to examine the item. Tell the seller that you will take him to the Small Claims Court, where the court will appoint a computer engineer who is agreeable to both parties.
You may end up in Small Claims Court, but you should win your money or part of it back, as long as you have been seen to have tried to reach an agreement beforehand.
(My AEX died a month ago (after 18 months) and have gone through the above (except the Small Claims Court) with the seller, who has now agreed a 50% refund.)
Keep fighting, don't take no for an answer and stay calm!!

  • Airport Express Blinking Orange!???

Alright. Im back, but this time with a minor problem. See, I purchased an iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB model on July and it is working real good so far. The only problem is the signal strength of my wifi keeps changing(possibly of the antenna) so I decided to make the signal stronger by creating another wireless network. So, I bought a used Airport Express Base Station, and as soon as I plugged it in, it keeps blinking orange. At first I thought it was charging but after 2 days it started to seem ridiculous. So, I went to the internet for help.
I looked at some forums and they say that I should perform a Reset, but I wasn't absolutely sure if that is the way to go. I then came to apple support for a better answer. Hope you guys know what to do.
    -Thanks in advance!^^

If you take your Express to the Apple store to have it checked out, the first thing they will do is connect an ethernet cable from a computer to your Express and open AirPort Utility.
    Did you try this?
Might be a good idea to pull the power on the Express first, then plug in the ethernet cable and power back up.
If the device does not appear at first, wait a few minutes and it will often just "appear".
If still no luck, you may have a defective device. Call Apple to go over your options.

  • Brand New Airport Express-Green Light Wireless, Dead Green Wired

I just bought a brand-new airport express device. I have a cable modem connected to a dual band AirPort Extreme base station in my basement. My house is wired with Cat5 Ethernet cable. In a far bedroom, I am replacing an airport express-N (previous model) that was hard-wired to the Extreme. Always worked perfectly in extending and supplying 2.4ghz band wifi to that part of the house. I bought the brand-new AirPort Express to utilize the dual band bridge.
After many hours of trying, this new airport express will only work properly if I do not plug in the Ethernet cable. It seems to be performing well, but i was under the impression that an ethernet cable should be used to physically connect the AirPort devices each other.
Currently, in this wireless setup, I do have both bands available. I feel that if I used the cable, I would have much stronger better signal.
Interestingly, when I do ether-connect the airport devices together. My AirPort Utility looses all of my AirPort devices and shows (with a yellow dot) that my Internet (modem) is not available. At the same time, all of my AirPort devices continue to show a green light. I am unable to connect anything with any of my wireless devices.
Also, when everything seems to be working fine, my AirPort Utility does depict the wireless set up with a dashed line between the two AirPort devices representing that it is wireless connection.
With my last AirPort Express, a wireless set did extend the range, but only while slowing everything down. An ethernet cable, when introduced, made everything work perfectly, during which time the AirPort Utility depicted that setup with all solid line indicating wired connectivity.
I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who might be able to tell me why when I introducing ethernet to the new AirPort Express, it takes down the entire wireless network.
Hi, of course, try all of the normal troubleshooting suggestions. I recycled all devices I have rebooted everything.

It's always a good idea to do a complete power recycle when switching out network components ...
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Airport Express Green Light but No Wireless Connection

I would be grateful for any help on an issue that has been driving me crazy! I have spent countless hours trying countless solutions. My wireless network is set up as such: Time Capsule serving as a Base Station, Airport Extreme, 1 Airport Express downstairs in dining room, 1 Airport Express upstairs landing, and 1 Airport Express in the bedroom. All are new, 802.11n. Time Capsule is configured as Create a Wireless Network/Allow This Network to be Extended. All other devices are configured as Extend a Wireless Network/Allow Wireless Clients. All device lights are green. The Time Capsule and Extreme produce a signal and have strong wireless connectivity. The expresses, though green, do not receive a signal and I cannot connect with laptop/iPhone etc. I have tried pretty much everything including changing the channels on the Time Capsule - basically ran through 10 of them with no difference. The Extreme relays strong wireless signal to the upper landing, but the Express - though showing green - simply does not put out a signal. Getting desperate here as have great wireless interest downstairs, but nothing upstairs no matter what I try. Any ideas MOST welcome. (ps...all firmware is up to date)

Kinda have a similar problem. Hijacking it.
Everything's up to date. About 1 year old.
Modem to AXp via Ethernet, AXp set to create a wireless network, shows greenlight.
Modem is a Motorola SB6120. Probably isn't relevant but let's mention it just to be sure.
Alu Macbook detects AXp. In Airport Utility, when I right-click Identify, it says orange/green flickering light. However, the state is greenlighted and it says that it's normal.
All of my devices detect and can connect to my network. It seems everything's working alright except that none can access Internet.
Internet works fine when I directly connect my modem to my Macbook and when I reset the former (which, according to what I read here and there, is fine).
Everything (Macbook, iPod Touch, Wii) was working fine until yesterday afternoon, and nothing since then. Tried resetting the AXp, cycle everything (unplug all, plug in modem, AXp and boot Macbook, in that order) and it didn't work.
Whether it's set to be distributing IP adresses to be sharing a public IP adress, it doesn't work.
I can click on renew lease, I can reboot my devices, same results.
So, where do I go from here? Just so you know, I know next to nothing about network stuff. Thanks in advance and here's the mandatory "sorry for my horrible english".

  • Airport Express - green light, no connection to net, but Windows cabled OK

    Hi all,
For 2 days I've been having a strange problem:
Suddenly I don't get a valid internet connection through my airport express (AX), although the whole setup has worked for 3 years.
I am connected that way: a DSL modem from my network provider is connected via ethernet cord to the AX. This opens a WPA2-encrypted network via PPPoE, and uses a MAC-Address filter.
So far, I have settled it down that way:
When working under Mac OS X (latest updates for Leopard are installed, the last one was a pure application update for notes, pages and keynote 2 days ago), I don't get a valid connection: Via AirPort it cannot find the PPPoE host, although the green light is solid visible. Via Ethernet-Cable I also don't get access to the PPPoE host.
Here comes the strange thing: When working under boot-camped Windows XP, setting up a network connection via Ethernet cord, it works! Obviously, when trying to connect wireless to the AX, a connection could be established, but there is no traffic possible.
Any suggestions or hel would be very much appreciated !
Could it be, that the last application updates for iWork had these effects? Would be too strange to believe..
    Thanks in advance,
    Andre
BTW: MacBook Pro, 10.5 Leopard with all system updates are installed. No custom firewall or such things.

    Hi Andre
I just had a similar thing happen to me where airport has been running fine for about a year and suddenly my iMac can't find the network although other wireless networks are found and our Wii, PS3 and PC notebook all connect. I contacted Apple and found that resetting the Airport Express was the only solution as it was originally set up on the Mac. The fact that it was picking up other wireless networks proved that there was nothing wrong with the wireless internals in the Mac.
So I factory reset the Airport Express by pressing the tiny button with a pen until it started flashing really quickly. Set it all up again on the Mac, then let the AE restart, then unplugged power from the wall for both the modem and AE for 20 seconds and reconnected.
It did the job for me - I hope it works for you.
