Airport Express Booting Users (max users?)

Hi everyone,
So here's the problem. I live in a residence hall, and I have my Airport Express setup with password because I'm aware of the 10 person limit. I've only given the password to connect to my two roommates and the three of us are the only ones using the Airport Express right now. Sometimes, when I open my laptop to connect, it does, but in the process it boots one of the other machines off the network. The process repeats if the booted machine tries to connect again - the oldest connection is kicked.
I assume this is happening because the Airport Express thinks that it has reached its maximum user limit of 10 simultaneous connections. However, when I open the Airport Utility it states that there are only 6 wireless clients (not only that but among the three of us we only have 8 wireless devices: a mix of laptops, iPhones, a PS3, and a wireless printer).
So it seems that my Airport Express can only support a max of 6 users. Is there any way to alleviate this problem, or can anyone think of another reason this is happening? Thanks in advance.

Bump...does anyone have an idea why this would be happening??

I forgot the password I used to set up airport express 3/4 years ago.. how can i get it back Any way I can get it back/ changed it?

If you still have the same Mac that you used to set up the AirPort Express originally, there is a good chance that you can retrireve the password from KeyChain Access.
Otherwise, you can perform a Soft Reset to assign a new password to the AirPort Express.

  • Airport Express 60hz hum. Solution?

I have a set of Cambridge Soundworks "Soundworks" multimedia speakers which I use outside on my patio to play iTunes via Airport Express. Over time a 60 cycle hum developed and gradually became louder. The speakers don't do this unless plugged into the Airport; that is, not when plugged directly into the jack on my computer. I've tried different wall outlets for the Airport with no success. Am I correct in assuming there's a fault in my Airport unit?
Could it be a faulty ac adaptor?

Thanks for this tip -- using the 3-prong cord definitely helps for me also. It does not eliminate it, but reduces it noticeably.
The humming for me started with the most recent firmware update to the Airport Express (6.3). The version prior to that did not hum for me, and I think I know why. With the current version, when the music stops streaming to it, the humming clicks on good and loud, but once music starts, during the silent parts you can hear that the humming is much lower or gone. I think for some reason the Airport Express now outputs max voltage when there's no data coming in, kind of like turning an amplifier all the way up when nothing is playing.
In the past, I think I actually downgraded the firmware to avoid this, but forgot the details and it came back when I absentmindedly upgraded the firmware later. The newer firmware does fix some issues with playing from iTunes, so I compromised and kept it, but it meant I had to turn off the amp whenever I wasn't using it, because the humming drove me crazy. Hopefully, with this 3-prong cord fix, it'll hum quietly enough that I can leave it on again all the time. The joy of it was being able to just start the music whenever without going over and fiddling with the amp...
But the fix I'd really like to see is for Apple to have it output minimum levels when it's not streaming, like I suspect it used to. Anyone from Apple monitoring this, I hope??

  • G5 & PC NOT STAYING CONNECTED VIA AIRPORT EXPRESS!

I've got a G5 and a PC - Hoped that Airport Express would allow both to access internet (via cable modem).
The connection drops after a little while. Everything says its working but obviously it's not.
    ANY HELP??!!!

I have white Macbook (802.11g capable) and Airport Express (802.11g capable).
I have a LAN internet connection, which is pretty fast. When I connect the cable to my ethernet and try to download something (for instance, speedtest.net) then the download speed is 33Mbit/sec, and upload is 20Mbit/sec.
I also have an Airport Express router - the 802.11g to be specific. So in the Airport Utility, under Wireless I selected "802.11g ONLY" and selected 24Mbit/sec Multicast rate.
When I tried to download something when conected to my Airport Express router - what actually happened, is that my computer is 2 m away from the Airport Express and the max download speed approximately should be ~24 Mbit/sec, but it turns out that the down speed is ONLY 14 Mbit/sec and the upload speed is 11 Mbit/sec.
So it means, that the Airport Express actually cannot deliver the 24 Mbit/speed.
I am actually pretty dissapointed, because I was kind of okay with the fact that I will loose those ~10 Mbit/sec from my actual internet sped when connected via Airport express, but I did not expect that it would be halved.
    Any solutions?
According to one source, the maximum throughput of 802.11g is 25 Mbps. That assumes ideal conditions. To learn more about those conditions in your case, launch AirPort Utility, double-click on your AirPort station to enter "Manual Setup" mode, select the "Advanced" panel, click on the "Logs and Statistics" button, then click on the "Wireless Clients" tab. There you will see values for signal and noise. The closer those two numbers are together, the worse throughput you can expect.
If the value for noise is high, you might try setting your AirPort unit to a different channel.
All the above is based on your having no other Wi-Fi equipment.

  • How many users or devices does an old 802.11g airport express support?

I've got three old 802.11g airport expresses that make up my home network.  One is my base station hooked to my cable modem.  the second I used as accss point for my satellite tv box.  The third is hooked up to my stereo.  I have an ipad, macbook, PC and a doogle plugged into my flat panel tv.  I usually don't have my mac and PC on at the same time but I have lately and I lose the network connection on both machines.  I can't reconnect on either machine.  My base station goes yellow so I unplug it a few minutes and plug it back in.  Then everything is find if I only have one machine.  I assume my trouble comes from trying to put too many devices on the network, right?  If I buy a new airport extreme, will it work with my old airport expresses?  Or what's the solution to my network problem?  Thanks.

Hi - first of all is the base station solid yellow or blinking yellow - if it is solid then there is an electrical problem - if it is blinking then there should be an error message in the Airport Utility  - each Express can handle 10 wireless clients - the base station can administer 199 internal IP addresses so I don't that the number of users is an issue - it sounds like a connection conflict - however to address you second question, you are using old technology with new technology now - so to use a new Extreme with old Expresses would be defeating your purpose - in my opinion instead you should get 3 new Expresses - $99x3 and you would be getting a fast new system  - or $180 for a new Extreme and still have a slow system - but if you want 3 gigabit ports and the ability to connect a hard drive in a base station then an Extreme and 2 Expresses is the ideal solution - and I fully understand the economics involved so the choice is yours - if I have caused you to have more questions, please ask.

  • HT1515 Will Airport Express work in hotels in China? They require user name/password to connect. Has anyone used one there?

I will be traveling in China with my iPad2 and want to use hotel wireless. It requires a sign-in with user name/password.  Can I use an Airport Express for this purpose? How do I set it up for that? I have an old Express (pre-2007); can I use it or do I need to upgrade to the new model?

OK - I have never been to China but the posts here say that it can be done - the cable from the hotel should be connected to the WAN port of the Express - the Express should be in bridge mode and set to create a wireless network with a name and password of your choice - you can do this with a computer before you leave for China or with the iPad if you have previously downloaded the Airport Utility app - you would then connect to your network and attempt to bring up a web page such as Google - the hotel should then intervene and ask you for the login info that they have provided.

  • Cannot get my airport express to allow multiple internet users.

Good morning.  I recently had TW install internet and phone (cable, but no TV) at my home.  My modem is a Scientific Altanta DPC 2203 and I have my AirPort Express hard-wired to the modem.  I was able to access internet using my MacBook, but cannot get a wireless connection on my iPhone, my beau's iPhone or his laptop. Time Warner (RoadRunner) keeps insisting the problem has to be in the wireless router. I have read the manual for AirPort Express and run through every tab of the set-up menu and cannot figure out what is wrong.
I would be grateful for any help you might offer.  I'm convinced this is a simple problem and I'm overlooking something obvious, but maybe not.  The tech support people at TW are very argumentative and insistent that this modem does not distinguish or create single users.  In my experience, it is usually an issue with the router, not the modem.
    Many thanks,
    Elaine

    On your Mac.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Click the Internet Connection tab just below the icon
    Settings should look like this.....
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
Click Update to save any changes and allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart
Power down everything on the network....modem, Express computer(s), printers, etc.....order is not important
Wait at least 15 minutes...longer will not hurt
Start the modem first and let it run for 2-3 minutes by itself
Start the Express the same way
Start each device one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered back up
    Check for proper operation.
Call the cable company to tell them they were right

  • A PC user's questions about Airport Extreme & Airport Express

    Hi all,
I have a few questions regarding both the Airport Extreme AC and the Airport Express.
I am a PC user who is currently looking at replacing my Cisco Linksys EA4500(primary router) and my Linksys E2500(bridge router) due to the lack of regular firmware updates that Linksys fails to provide for their routers  and the fact that I simply find Linksys products to be buggy..  Based on my research,  Apple's Airport Extreme N and the AC versions have received excellent reviews on Amazon and I am considering purchasing both the Airport Extreme AC(to replace my Linksys EA4500) and the Airport Express(to replace my Linksys E2500).
Before I get to my questions, let me be frank in saying that I do not have a Mac(but intend to after my desktop dies) at this time but in my house we have two iPhone 4s's and one iPad 2 as far as Apple products are concerned.  My computer network consists of my HP Windows 7 based desktop and HP Windows 7 laptop and I have a home ethernet in every room in the house . In addition, my den's ethernet connection is connected as Ethernet wall jack in which the connections include---->Ethernet switch------>Tivo---->Playstation 3/Xbox 360/Nintendo Wii/----->Samsung Smart TV---->Linksys E2500.
    My questions are as follows:
    1. Initial/Out of the box set up: Based on what I have read here, it is possible for a PC user to setup the Airport Extreme by downloading the Airport Extreme utility software from Apple. However I have been confused based on what I have read on Amazon in that some users report that the initial setup can only be done using a Mac.  Would someone from this forum kindly clairify this for me? Can I set up the Airport Extreme with my network assuming that I have previously downloaded an installed Apple's Airport Extreme Utility for the PC?
    2. Using the Airport Express as a wireless bridge: Currently my Linksys E2500 serves as my secondary router in my den in bridge mode.  Can I set up an Airport Express as a wireless bridge assuming I was sucessfully in setting up my Airport Extreme? On Linksys products this is done by setting the router in bridge mode and assigning it a specific IP address within the bridge router's settings.  So for example, my Linksys E2500 has a 192.168.1.1X IP address, can I do this with the Airport Extreme?  Note the the intention here for the extra router in my den to provide additional wireless coverage due to the size of my home.  I do not need it to provide me with the same wireless network name as my primary router, I only want to provide the back of my house with additional wireless coverage that a primary router will not provide.
    3. Router Security and reliability:  I would like the router that I purchase to include regular firmware updates beyond that of one year.  Especially now that most modern routers have some sort of cloud set up,  I wouldn't want to purchase a router today, only to find out that I wouldn't be able to update its firmware one year from now.   With respect to Apple's routers,  how often does Apple release firmware and typically speaking;  how long will Apple support additional firmware releases for its products?
Thanks to anyone who reads and responds to my long post!

The one problem is Apple using their own automatic port opening system.. NAT-PMP which is fine for apple clients but will not work with almost anything else made which depends on UPNP ..
There are lots of hassles with PS3 and XBox live and anything that depends on standard automatic port opening for interactive internet connection.
Manually opening ports is possible but a pain.

I do agree with John Galt that the Apple products are well made and generally great.. they did have a bad capacitor failure issue in the Gen1 and Gen2 TC which he may have forgotten about.. I have repaired about 200 of the bludgers. And there was a dedicated site to pressure apple to fix them.. with 2500 recorded dead TC.
    See http://timecapsuledead.org/
    See
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
And some ongoing issues.. even post getting that fixed up.

But the AEBS had external power supply so didn't add to the heat of built in HDD and power supply in a case too small without cooling. New ones seem to have learnt the lessons of the past in that the power supply is internal but they use a fan system to keep it cool.
See http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule for internal construction.. TC and AEBS are now identical except for the hard disk.
An option worth considering is using a router with third party source firmware.
You are then never cut off from great updated firmware.. and you can do amazingly more with the fuller setup that includes Telnet cli and extensive interface on the GUI.
Eg Gargoyle on a Netgear WNDR3800 or even cheaper TP-Link WDR3600 or WDR4300.
These offer full QoS, not in Apple products.
Full throttling controls, not in Apple products.
Quota, not in any other products in domestic market at all.
NAT-PMP and UPNP, not in Apple products.
    VPN, not in Apple products.
Multiple VLAN, Multiple IP addressing, not in Apple producs.
SMTP, which Apple removed from all their new products.. no reason why.
Log access, which Apple removed from the new airport utility.. no reason why.
    etc.
If for some reason that firmware doesn't suit.. you can flash over to DD-WRT, or OPENWRT.. etc. in other words you are never again beholden to the manufacturer who after the product is EOL is also end of support.

  • Macbook won't boot after Airport update, stuck in single user mode

Wasn't sure what forum to put this in, so I'll start here. After re-imaging student machines from the server, for some reason the new Macbooks no longer recognize they have an airport card. On another machine I download the appropriate Airport software, copy to thumbdrive, and install on student laptop. After required reboot, the Macbook refuses to boot into OS X- I get the grey apple logo, spinning gear, then drops to what appears to be single user mode, with the exception that it seems to be "refreshing" itself constantly with messages appearing for brief moments (too fast to read). It cycles so fast that I can't type anything before it is gone again. If I purposely boot into single user mode, everything behaves as normal, if I mount as fire-wire drive, everything looks good. But I can't get into OS X. Before I brick more student machines, have any ideas?

Some added info, i CAN boot the bricked machine into Safe mode, but at reboot I get stuck in the same cycle again.
Oh, and in SafeBoot, the Macbook still tells me that no Airport card is installed, even though I know it does (and it's not knocked loose or anything).....

  • "Authentication failed" - exceeding Airport Extreme's max users with less than 10 devices connected?

I am running an Airport Extreme with two Airport Expresses on my network.  There are two macbook pros, two iphones, two ipads, a PS3 and a chromecast in the household, a max of probably 5 or 6 of which are turned on at any given time.  Normally everything works perfectly, but occasionally my wife or I will get an "authentication failed" message while trying to log onto our home network, and after wasting time resetting the router, checking settings, etc, the only sure fire way to reconnect seems to be to make sure the chromecast and a couple of the iphones are turned off.
If I remember correctly, the max number of connections to an airport extreme is 50?  Obviously not ideal but it shouldn't be refusing connections when 6 or 7 devices are trying to hook up.  We have had the same issue when firends come to visit.  I can't find any obvious problems in the airport setup, and I have my DHCP range set from xx.xx.xx.2 to 200.
    Any ideas?

is it the same device generating the error
i have had up to 40 devices on a single extreme maybe with 10 actively working others when needed with no issue

  • One Time Capsule & Two Airport Express for Range Extension but will my time capsule hard drive be accessible to all the user on network ?

I am planning to buy 2TB time capsule which is [2TB hard drive + Airport Extreme] and two Airport Express to extend the range of my wifi network. we have a large family & because of that we have 1 macbook, 2 laptops , 2 desktops, 4 iphones, 2 ipads, 3 android phones, 2 apple tvs, 2 ps3's. all of these devices are on my Wifi network but some of them are off usually ps3, apple tv and desktops computers r off but still their is alot of traffic. Now i am buying this 2TB time capsule instead of Airport Extreme so that i can save money by getting 2TB hard drive for me only & not the whole family so i want to know if i can keep the hard drive private & at the same time i want to share my internet connection with all of these devices which belongs to my family members, will this be okay ? and they wont be able to access my hard drive ? & will i be able to access my hard drive if i m connected to any of those two airport express & not the main time capsule. indirectly i will be connected to time capsule by using airport expresses in client mode correct me if i am wrong

You can use TC with whatever wireless you currently have.. if it works you should not need to buy a pair of express as well. The best method is to bridge the TC and plug it into the main router.
You can certainly keep it private for your own access only.. simply set a disk password only you know. Easy.
As long as you have a single network, then wherever you connect in the network will be able to access the TC.. but also note file speeds to the TC with multiple wireless hops will be terrible slow.
Also note all security on the TC is an illusion. It is a home device.. press reset and anybody can then access it. You can even get past disk password. If you want security keep the device off the network.. use an external hard disk plugged directly into the computer.
