Airport Express can't find D-Link wireless network

Hi all,
I'm on my third AirPort Express. I'm trying to use it in client mode to connect to a D-Link DIR-655 WAP, so I can run AirTunes. The first unit was a Best Buy refurb that I was able to configure fine, but it kept dropping the connection and having other issues, so I returned it. The next two units were fresh from the Apple Store. NEITHER has been able to even find my D-Link SSID - it's not listed in the list of networks to join in client mode, and entering the SSID directly doesn't work either. I've tried resetting both the Airports and D-Links multiple times, changed SSID/broadcast/channel settings, tried turning wireless security on and off... ALL my other wireless devices have no issues whatsoever finding and connecting to the D-Link. This includes a '06 iMac, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPad2, PowerBook G4, MacBook Pro, Sony VAIO laptop, the first refurb AirPort Express... you get the point. I put in a call to Apple for the 2nd unit, and they said the radio must be broken, so I exchanged for the 3rd unit, and it still doesn't see the D-Link. Losing my mind here! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Marc

Welcome to the discussion area, bob36!
To do what you want, you'll need the AirPort Express 802.11n. The model number, visible in the fine print on the side is A 1264.
Is this the model you have? If so, post back for some configuration tips to enable the ethernet port.
If...you have the older version of the AirPort Express, model A 1084, unfortunately this version will not allow you to do what you want to do unless your main router is also an Apple device and you re-configure both devices to particapte in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
The downside to the WDS is that it will drop your entire network down to "g" level speeds and cut the bandwidth by 50%.

  • Airport Express can't connect back to wireless network

Here's the situation. There was a power glitch in our neighborhood that knocked our linksys wireless router offline. We have since gotten that back up and running. Meanwhile, our 2 Airport Express (used for iTunes only) went yellow and wouldn't rejoin the network with a hard reset. I have been trying to do the factory reset. The lights do their 4 green blinks but when the Airport Utility (not Airport Setup Utility - is that gone?) tries to rejoin the expresses to our wireless network we get the following error:
AirPort Utility was unable to find your base station after restarting.
The settings for this base station have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the base station. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again.
I am confused. We are using WPA2 personal encryption and I have included that info in the Airport Utility so it's not a password problem. I am sure I'm missing something completely stupid.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Airport Express stopped showing up on the wireless network

Airport Express stopped showing up on the wireless network, and now I can't stream music from my iMac or iPhone through the AE as I used to. I now have a new adsl modem, but it doesn't help. The AE has a wireless connection to the modem. I've used Airport Utility to setup the AE again, no help. I also updated to Maverick but it didn't help. Any ideas?

By "I can't reset it" do you mean you tried both the "hard" and "factory default" resets on your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) and still were not able to see it from iTunes? ...and if so, were you able to connect to it directly, using an Ethernet cable, to configure it using the AirPort Admin Utility?

  • Can my older Airport Express 802.11g join an existing wireless network

I have a Airport Express 802.11g firmware version 6.3 . Using the most recent Airport Express Utility I can set it up as a base station on its own independent network but I cannot join it to my existing home wireless network. As I go through the wizard (or manual setup) It just does not detect/display any existing wireless networks. I have plenty of mobile devices in the  house that can see the wireless network...and next doors network.
So, it begs the question ... is an 802.11g unit actually capable of joining another network or is this capability available on later models only. A search of apple support and the wider internet for "Airport Express 802.11g capabilities" yeilds a blizzard or useless info.
    Thank you

Sorry, I cannot help on Windows since I do not have a Windows 7 machine here to test. I have used XP in the past and AirPort Utility appears to be virtually the same in Windows as a Mac. I assume that this is the case for AirPort Utility 5.6.1, and it should be able to configure the Express.
The older Express will join most wireless networks if the following conditions are met:
    1) The Express is functioning correctly.
    2)  The wireless network name is 12 characters or less and it contains only normal letters and numbers. Avoiding blank spaces in the wireless network name will help improve the chances of the Express joining the network as well.
    3)  The wireless router is broadcasting a compatible signal that would allow the "g" Express to connect. If your network is broadcasting a wireless "n only" signal, the Express cannot connect to this network.
    4)  The wireless security on the network is set to a WPA compatible setting. That is because the older Express has difficulty joining 3rd party wireless networks using WPA2 Personal or WPA2-PSK-AES encryption. In other words, if your network is now using WPA2 Personal or WPA2-PSK-AES settings, the "g" Express will probably not be able to join the network.
    5)  If you are using MAC Address Filtering on your network, the MAC address of the Express will need to be included in your settings.
    6)  The wireless network password uses the same guidelines that appear in 2) above
The items noted above will provide the Express with the best chance of joining your network.  Plan to use the Manual Setup option in AirPort Utility and be prepared to use the Option or Alt keys on the PC if needed.
If you are looking for a guarantee of success in advance for this task, I cannot provide that and you should wait for another user to post who might be able to meet your requirements in that regard.

  • Is it possible to use Airport Express to extend my Cisco E2500 wireless network

    Hi everyone,
I just bought the new 2012 Airport Express yesterday, and want to extend my network which is using Cisco E2500 via the Ethernet port, but I don't know how to do it, anyone can tell me if it is possible and how to do it?

Hi Bob, I have successfully extend my Cisco E2500 network using the 2012 Airport Express via Ethernet port, below is the things I have configured.
    1. Inside AirPort Utility - Wireless Tab, choose "Create a wireless network" in the Network Mode option, use the same Wireless Network Name, Wireless Security, Wireless Passowrd as the Cisco E2500.
    2. In the Internet Tab, I just choose using DHCP since the Cisco E2500 will be the one to distribute IP Address, then the IP address, subnet mask, router address and DNS servers address has been assigned successfully to Airport Express.
    3. In Network Tab, use "Off (Bridge Mode)" for the Router Mode option.
    4. Click Update, and let the Airport Express to update itself and restart.
All done, and all my devices in different part of my house can access the internet connection, also my iMac in the living room and airplay music to the speaker that connect to my Airport Express inside the bedroom.

  • Can I use the Airport Express to connect to a Linksys Wireless Network and then use the Ethernet port on the Airport for a wired connection to a device for internet access?  Would I be able to then also use that Ethernet pt to a Ntwk Hub for more wired c

Thanks for the help.  Looked but not clear on what I am trying to do as being possible.  Can I use an Airport Express to connect wireless to a Linksys Wireless Router, such that I can then use the Ethernet ports on the Airport to either connected to a PC wired, or even use a hub off the Airport Express to allow multiple wired connections to it?
I am not looking to have the Airport Express extend my wireless network, just connect to it and provide me wired connections in a different location from where my Linksys Route is located.  Would prefer to replace Linksys with all Apple, but just not possible financially yet.  Thanks for the help.

If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is an 802.11n model, then yes, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network provided by the Linksys router and its Ethernet port would be enabled for either a single wired device or for an Ethernet hub or switch for multiple devices.

  • Airport Express can't find internet during initial install to extend wifi from Airport Extreme

Currently have Airport Extreme but need to reinforce signal.  Bought Airport Express.  Only way to get Airport Express to find Internet is to connect directly to cable modem (even then, it did NOT show up on Airport Utility).  Thus, have not been able to configure Express either wirelessly or using Ethernet.

    Thanks for the info.
Please power off the AirPort Extreme, wait a minute, then power it back up.
Power up the AirPort Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 8-10 seconds and release, then allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
If you plan to leave the AirPort Express permanently connected to the AirPort Extreme, run the Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
If you plan to have the AirPort Express connect using wireless only, then do not connect an Ethernet cable to the Express at any time
    On the iPad home screen.....
    Tap Settings
    Tap WiFi
Wait a few seconds for a setting of Set Up a New AirPort Base Station to appear
Tap on AirPort Express just below that setting
The utility will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the AirPort Express will be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network
Enter a device name that you want to use for the AirPort Express.  Keep the name short and simple, like Express, for example
    Tap on Next
The utility will set the Express up for you automatically with the correct settings.
When you see the message appear of Setup Complete, tap Done
You are done, assuming that the AirPort Express is operating correctly.

  • Airport express can't connect to Linsys wireless router with security wpa2

Hi all, I have posted a question previously regarding trying to connect my airport express to my existing network, a Linsys wireless router....
I have now found that if I disable the wireless security (wpa2 personal) on my router the A/E connects though as soon as I enable security again the A/E drops out. I have checked the network name and password and all are definately correct.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

Unfortunately I have tried absolutely everything and no go I have just discovered that I can still use it though by having it as a wired Lan connection to my Cisco router then the laptop wirelessly connects to the A/E through the router so not all bad just had to wire a lan point from one room to the other.
After talking with Apple support they say it's pretty hit and miss with what different routers the A/E will and wont connect with...
So save yourself a lot of heartache and just use as a wired connection
    Hope this helps

  • TS1253 airport express can not find a driver for my my Samsung CLX-3185 connected with a USB. I can see the printer and it tells me that driver is available but then it can not find it.

I can see and download the driver from the net but it does not help the Airport Express. What can I do?

    Thanks for your answer.
actually, my ipod will not let me activate it with apple id, this happened when the new iOS acutalizó understand that has more security, but do not know what to do.

  • AirPort Express won't connect to existing wireless network

I just purchased the current gen AirPort Express and it won't connect to my existing wireless network. My current wireless network is on a D-Link DIR-827 and it operates on both the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz bands. My current gen Apple TV is connected to the D-Link wirelessly and it works fine. Basically all I want to do is have a pair of speakers attached to the AIrPort Express and stream music to it via AirPlay from all my devices. When I use the AirPort Utility, I keep getting the error that 'it's setup to join an existing wireless network but it can't find it.'  The light flashes amber and I can't connect to it. Right now I've setup a new wireless network for my AirPort Express but ideally I would like to have it join my existing network so all my devices can stream to it without having to connect to it seperately.
    Thanks,
    Ata

    Hi Ata,
...Right now I've setup a new wireless network for my AirPort Express but ideally I would like to have it join my existing network
If you already configured your AirPort to create a separate wireless network, it would be best to reconfigure it to "join" your existing network by starting over with a "hard reset": Press and hold the reset button and keep it depressed, continuously, about five to ten seconds, long enough for it to flash amber. Then, it will glow amber steadily for about a minute while it starts up, then it will flash amber slowly indicating it needs to be configured.
It will then appear in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu like this:
Select it. AirPort Utility will load and walk you through its configuration.
Be sure to select the option to "join" your existing network, and not create a new one. In that configuration, it will serve as a device for music streaming only, and cannot serve a wireless access point. For that, your router would need to be a genuine Apple AirPort Base Station.

  • Airport Express won't join my existing wireless network...

I have Broadband in my house. I have a wireless modem also. I have spent hours trying to have Airport Express join the network so I can use the music streaming feature, but I have so far not been successful. I have seen a lot of references to it being very easy and straightforward to set up with it doing most of the work itself. As in, plug in AE to a power socket, open Airport Utility and follow the instructions... It doesn't appear to be that simple, not by a long shot. Can anyone outline how this can be done in simple steps? All of the online steps I have tried do not work, with many of them referencing aspects of the Airport Utility GUI that don't seem to exist...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
For the record, I DO NOT want to replace my existing wireless router, i just want AE to join the network...
    Thanks...
    Ronan

I have the same problem - the AE wont join my Draytek 2600 wireless network. I can stream music wired, but it refuses to join the wireless network. I have tried WEP, WPA, WPA 2 etc. Always get amber flashing light. Ive spent about 5 hours solid on it so far, and I'm a networking expert.
No other device on the planet has problems connecting to my wireless. currently I have:
    1) Belkin wireless Skype phon (no problems)
    2) SOHO wireless IP camera (no problems)
    3) Intel Macbook pro (no problems)
    4) G4 Macbook (no problems)
    5) Dell D600 XP notebook (no problems)
Try to connect the AE? No chance. Its just broken.
I have tried every conceiveable manual setting on the device also.
If I manually set the ip (outside the DHCP range, but within the subnet), subnet, DNS sever, domain etc, I get a GREEN light, but nothing can communicate with it. The utility cant see it, and itunes cant see it.
The real problem is there is no way to know if the problem is with DHCP or the wireless. Does green light mean it has a wireless connection, or it has a valid IP?
Interestingly, if I start it with a wired connection, get a green light, then stream music to it, then pull out the wire, the green light stays, and music players for about another minute (presumably wirelessly, but who knows?) before the music stops and the device (replete with green light), becomes dead to the network.
APPLE desperately needs to sort this out. Its junk.

  • Airport Express as very slow in "extend wireless network" mode

    Hi!
I am using a Airport Extreme (fourth generation) as a wireless router and a Airport Express 802.11n in "extend wireless network" mode.
I've set the Airport Extreme mode to 802.11n only - and all devices connect to the Airport Extreme as 802.11n Clients properly.
But as soon as they connect to the Airport Express, they only work in 802.11b/g mode (although they are capable of n)
and the connection is very slow - around 1Mb/s:
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/804/bildschirmfoto20111211u.png/
Can i force the Airport Express station to accept only "n" connections to speed up my file tranfers?
    Thanks for any help!
    matt

Where is the AirPort Express located in relation to the area that needs more wireless coverage?
Ideally, it would be at a point that is about half the distance between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage....and....there would be no obstructions like walls and/or ceilings in the signal path....tough to do in most homes, so do the best that you can.
Avoid placing the Express down low on the wall and use an extension cord to get it up as high as possible with a free look into the room.
The Express will normally "extend" what it receives, but you could try the following to see if it helps:
Temporarily, change the Wireless Mode setting on the AirPort Express to "Create a wireless network" and change the Radio Mode to "802.11n only".
(You may have to hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Radio Mode selection box to see the "802.11n only" choice). Then change the Wireless Mode back to "Extend a wireless network" and Update.

  • I keep getting error 10053 when trying to update airport express and connecting to the existing wireless network. Please help.

can someone assist in setting up my airport express? Im not sure what the error message means...

    Hello Jacquimae,
The only thing you can buy legitimately is the computer and the basic discs that are necessary to operate it.   All Apple apps over and above this cannot be legally sold on.   The machine should have been completely wiped and the original OS re-installed, bringing the machine to its original factory condition.   iPhoto and Garage band were part of OS 10.6.8. Snow Leopard.
You must not use the original owner's ID.

When I turn on my Imac it can not find my wireless network automacally, I have to seclect it manually.  Apple support has not been apple to find the problem.  I also have an MacBook Pro and have no problem with this laptop finding my network everytime.  Does anyone else have this problem. This problem started within the last month.

Lot's of people reporting Wifi problems with 10.7.4, but some things to try...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • How do I use my Airport Express 1st generation to extend my wireless network?

    Hi all,
I've got an old time capsule (1st gen) and a 1st gen airport express in another room with a USB printer connected.
There's up to 100 meg broadband from a virgin hub, but that is connected by ethernet to my time capsule.  I then configured the time capsule to be a WDS base, and the airport express to be a WDS remote.
    That all worked OK.
But the internet is incredibly slow in the office (where the Airport Express is).  Pages do load eventually, but VERY slowly!
I asked in the apple store if it was necessary to buy new stuff, because the internet is so slow, and the guy said that the system should work if I am using the airport express to extend the network.
I reset everything, and reconfigured as above, and it is still painfully slow.
    Any ideas?
I don't mind ditching the time capsule as a base station and just having the AP extending the virgin hub if that'll work - or ditching the AP and using the time capsule to extend the virgin hub....or buying a new airport express and extending the virgin hub...I jsut want fast internet in my office room!
    Thanks in advance!
