Airport Express, can't set up

Hi,
I pooled my old Airport Express from a drawer hoping to use it for wireless music streaming and sharing the printer.
I connected it to my router for Internet, and tried to set it up using my Mac (Lion) or iPad (iOs 5.1). However, my Mac's Airport Utility doesn't even see the Airport Express station (the mac's wifi is on), and the iPad says: "The AirPort Express named 'Apple Network ...' cannot be set up by this softwere. Go to apple.com/support/airport". (I didn't find anything about this issue there).
Can this problem be helped?
Thank you in advance,
Best regards,
Timofey

Thank you for your reply.
However, the download link on that page seems broken (i.e. there is no .dmg there). I will try to visit it later to be on the safe side.
Also, the version of AirPort Utility in my system is 6.0. Do you mean Apple dropped some backward compatibility there?
Thank you again

  • Virgin Broadband Ethernet Hub Airport Express, can't set up a network

My broadband comes in via the virgin modem, I then want to be able to 'split it off' to provide a wired ethernet connection for 'ordinary' machines and also a wifi network for all the laptops in the house.
Currently I have set it up as follows:
Virgin Broadband >> Ethernet Hub >> Airport Express (wifi) >>
Connections to the Ethernet Hub work (its what I am on now) and filesharing between machines on the wifi network work as well but machines on the wifi network can't get any internet access???
Am I barking up the wrong tree????

colse, Welcome to the discussion area!
This won't work with an Ethernet hub or Ethernet switch.
Your ISP gives you a single IP address. To connect multiple devices you need a router. The router will use that single public IP address and then create multiple local IP addresses for your devices. The AirPort Express (AX) IS a router but unfortunately only has a single Ethernet port and can't support Ethernet clients.
So... you need to replace the hub with an inexpensive wired router.
Then configure the AX to act as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address) so that the AX will not create a separate subnet for the wireless clients.

  • After updating Time Capsule to 7.7.2, Airport Expresses can no longer connect

After I update the Time Capsule firmware to 7.7.2, my three Airport Expresses can no longer connect to the Time Capsule (their orange lights blink and they appear inaccessible in the Airport Utility). When I downgrade, they are able to connect fine.
They are connecting to the Time Capsule over my 5GhZ wireless network.
    Any help?

How many airport express can I add to my network for the purpose of using the airport express to send audio signal to different rooms in the house? I'm interested I'm running about six different zones.
What I'm looking to do is to have self powered in ceiling speakers in every room in my house with out having to run wires to every room to carry the audio signal. I would like to use the airport express to do the job of carting the audio signal.
Here's my set up now I have an airport extreme and one airport express that I use to carry audio to one room.

FWIW. I have used up to four AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) for streaming sucessfully in pretty much the way you have described. I didn't have a need to try more so I can't attest that more would or would not work.

  • Airport Express can only extend network, not create new one. Why?

I am sharing a flat with some friends. The shared broadband router is placed in the living room. To strengthen the signal and make it easier for me to manage, I bought an Airport Express, connected it to the shared router with an ethernet cable and set up a wireless network of my own in my room. It was working fine, until recently we renewed our broadband contract. The router had been replaced by a new one (I don't know why) and the network configration had been changed. Since then I was not able to use my own network. In the Airport Utility display, the light of Airport Express is green, but the light of Internet is yellow, and the status is disconnected. I tried to change various other configuration on the Airport Express, and all in vain. Until I switched the network mode from 'Create a new wireless network' to 'Extend a wireless network', the Internet connection was finally back online. But this merely extends the existing network and not what I want. Why this happens? Why my Airport Express can only extend a network, not create one?

Here is the situation on my Airport Express.
If I choose to extend the existing wireless network, the Airport Utility shows like this:
If I set up a wireless network of my own, what I get in the Airport Utility is this:
See my problems here? The Airport Express does not show anything in amble, but the Internet complains that there is no connection.
This problem did not occur before the broadband was renewed and the rounter was replaced.

  • HT4587 1st generation AirPort Express - unable to set up

I have 1st generation AirPort Express but can't set it up again after a long time of not being used because it appears the new airport software is not compatible with the original AirPort Express - can anyone help please?

A1088 is not a 1st Gen Express "n" wireless device, so that might help explain the issue here.
The much older version of the Express that you have cannot be administered by the newer operating systems on Macs.....Mavericks, Mountain Lion, and Lion.....which will work with the 1st Gen A1264 Express.
If you have an older Mac running the Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x) operating systems, or a PC, you can use one of those computers to configure and administer the older Express model.

  • Airport express can't extend wireless network

Airport express(A1264) can't extend wireless network. It seems that Airport express can't find my home Wi-Fi network. Amber light is blinking, and AirPort Utility of MacBook also can't find Airport express.
If AE is connected with TC via LAN cable, amber light is blinking with message "Wireless Network" (This Airport base station is set up to join a specific wireless network that can't be found...)
It was successful only once, but all failed after that.
Is there solution for this problem?
    [My system]
    Time capsule 4th generation
    Airport express 1st generation (A1264)
    [Settings]
    Time capsule (ethernet connected)
    - Create a wireless network
    - 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n (Automatic)
    - 2.4GHz / 5GHz Channel (Autmatic)
    - WPA2 Personal
    Airport express
    - Extend a wireless network
    - WPA2 Personal
    - 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network name and Password is set up

If AE is connected with TC via LAN cable, amber light is blinking with message "Wireless Network" (This Airport base station is set up to join a specific wireless network that can't be found...)
Sorry, I misunderstood what you wanted to do.
Since you did tell us that you had the Express connected with an Ethernet cable, I assumed that was how you wanted to configure the Express.
But I want to extend a wireless network (not using ethernet)
Because Airport Express and Time Capsule cannot be connect via ethernet cable.
Follow the same setup as above....and do not connect an Ethernet cable.
Keep the Express near the Time Capsule for the setup. Once you have a green light, move the Express to a point that is about half way between the Time Capsule and area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you reset the Express several times and try the setup several times without success, I think you have to suspect a defective Express.

  • I have an Ipad and Iphone but I don't have an Airprint, only a WIFI printer,my question is if I connect the wifi printer to Airport express, can I print from Ipad and Iphone ?

I have an Ipad and Iphone but I don't have an Airprint at home but only a WIFI printer, my question is if I connect the wifi printer to Airport express, can I print from Ipad and Iphone ? Please help me if anyone knows about this.

Unfortunately, connecting a non-AirPrint-enabled printer to an AirPort base station's USB port will not make it AirPrint-ready.
You will need to use another solution, like Printopia, to be able to print to this printer from an iOS device.

Theoretically as much as you want but there are technical limitations about the usable bandwidth in the wireless or by the used access point.
All participants (stations) in a wireless network share the available bandwhith equally and therefore a point will get reached where the throughput in the network became insufficient to stream music.
Also some routers limit the number of stations could get connected. For instance Apples Airport Extreme have a limit of 50 connected clients and the AP-Express (if used as access point) a limit of 10 simultaneous connections.

  • How many airport express can be supported by software remote at one time.

how many airport express can be supported by software remote at one time?
I mean remote software can control at one time

Well Apple makes an iOS application called 'Remote' it's used to control iTunes on a Mac, Or to control an Apple TV Multimedia features.
Apple also makes "AirPort Utility" for iOS. Airport Utility can be used to configure Aiport Extrem, Airport Express And Time Capsul using an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. You can use it to connect to one device at a time. While connected to the device you can configure it to work as part of a larger Airport network. If you want to configure muliple device, you would connect to one device,  configure it,  And then connect to the next device, and configure it, and so on and so fourth.
    I haven't found a limit.
How big of a network are you trying to make?

  • If i have a home full of Apple TV's and Airport Express' can i  airplay music in every room at the same time?

If i have a home full of Apple TV's and Airport Express' can i  airplay music in every room at the same time?
Or just one device(room) at a time?
It seems there is a lot of home theater systems where they all hook up to one "control" and then disperse to the different locations per instructions..
Is this possible with all apple products?

From iTunes using Multiple Speakers (you can control with the Remote app on iPhone/iPad too), but not from AppleTV itself.

  • While using the airport express can I listen to music streaming from the Internet?

While using the airport express can I listen to music streaming from the Internet?

The music must be in your iTunes library.
Or, you can try to add a special application like Airfoil that may allow you to stream any audio signal on your computer to the AirPort Express. It might work.

  • Can Airport Express / Computer be set up to steam music and go online at the same time?

I can only connect my MacBook to one device (wireless modum and airport extreme) at a time.  I have gotten a few error messages during setup that make me wonder if it is the "refurb" device that is bad. I get error messages when I try to set it up wirelessly.  Or do I need the extreme to do what I want?  I installed all updates it asked for as well.

Yes, both can be done simultaneously. You just need to reconfigure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to "join" the wireless network provided by the other wireless router.
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    Network Name: <existing wireless network>
Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup >Music
    Enable AirTunes (checked)
iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    Verify Password: (optional)
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX

  • AirPort Express - can't connect wirelessly after set up

    Hi,
I've had an AirPort Express for about 4 months now to stream music wirelessly within my home network (inc. wireless router).
The connection with the AirPort Express has always been.....problematic when streaming through iTunes or AirFoil the connection drops out often and many times it's given up entirely.
I thought I'd solved this problem by plugging in an ethernet cable and resetting the device to factory defaults and setting up from scratch. However, once I unplugged the ethernet cable I can't connect via Airport util wirelessly at all.
After reading the manual from cover to cover, again I thought it could have been a problem with where the airport express was located (fairly near the stereo and close to a couple of power cables.
I moved the device to a plug socket on its own with no electrical devices within a metre of the device and nothing plugged into it. I plugged in the ethernet cable and went through the set up from factory defaults again. When the device restarted I could briefly (for a couple of seconds) connect to it wirelessly before it could no longer be recognised by Airport utils. I can access the device via ethernet cable, but wireless (which is why I bought it in the first place) will not work.
Tried soft resets, hard resets, restoring it to factory defaults and am now at the end of my tether.
Can someone please help me with this?

Hello, Im not a techie, but, if its the same thing as I have....the ethernet port is for your ISP WAN cable. Your laptop should connect wirelessly. After resetting the router, use Airport Utility to rename it, set up a password for the router and the wireless network before other things.
This line from your post throws me for a loop ). "However, once I unplugged the ethernet cable I can't connect via Airport util wirelessly at all." I'm not sure what to make of that, unless you connected your laptop to router with a cable and tried to connect wirelessly also.
Anyway,,,,,on the express router there is a ethernet port for your ISP WAN connection, a usb port for printer and a jack to connect your stereo. Your laptop should connect to the router wirelessly.
