Airport express completely dead

My Airport Express has completely stopped working. No light and no signal. Is there any hope of fixing it? Does anyone know how to open up the case to check for broken wires?

  • Airport Express lights dead

I have just returned from holiday, to find one of my Airport Express stations "dead". It is not showing any lights at all, neither amber nor green. My other Airport Express station, which acts as my base station is working fine, but this second one which was used to play music in a different room, and to extend the range of the base station, seems to have completely died.
Anyone have any ideas as to what could be the problem, or how to determine if it really is completely dead. It was connected to a surge protector, which was left connected to the mains whilst I was away.

If the status light doesn't go on, the unit is indeed dead.
I don't think these devices are repairable. If you return one to Apple under warranty, I suspect they simply replace it and throw the old one away. If it isn't under warranty, your Apple service center will probably tell you to buy a new one.

  • I think my airport express is dead but I dont know...help!

    hi there
on thursday night, i did a number of software updates (unrelated to airport express). anyway, on friday the airport express went down, so i thought that was simply some kind of software update, reset the computer but nothing worked.
so i have tried resetting the unit, unplugging it for a lengthy period of time and nothing gets my little light flashing again.
the reason i am unsure, is that when i do go to plug the unit back into a powerpoint, i see a very quick green flash which suggests the unit is ok, and i am wondering whether i am doing something wrong.
FYI, i am still relatively new to apples, having a powerbook for approx. 16 months although i still dont understand apples the way i did my old pc's.
is it simply the unit, in which case i'll go to my nearest apple store or is it me?
    please help.

Gail - the symptoms you describe are far less common, but I think you too have a dead Airport Express. Yes, a software update (or more specifically, a firmware update) gone wrong can easily turn a functional Airport Express into a doorstop.
Try doing a factory reset per:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
If the symptoms persist - get a warranty replacement. Absolutely your Airport Express will be covered for this sort of problem if it is under warranty.

  • AirPort Express is dead, but under warranty

My airPort Express Base Station does not work. It does not appear anymore, and is apparantly not sending a signal. I have rest it, and tried to troubleshoot it in every way I can think of. I own others that work fine. It is still under warranty with apple, as the receipt says "warranty effective through Jul. 18, 2008." How do I go about the process of having them replace it or fix it?

  • Airport Express suddenly dead

So I realized my Airport Express just died on me the other day. I plugged it in and waited for it to boot up, but nothing happened. Thinking something was wrong with the power outlet, I found another one on the other side of the house, but I got the same result.
Is my Airport Express dead now? I've had it since August '04, and it's worked perfectly until now. When I plug it in, nothing happens. The light doesn't light up or anything.
Has anybody experienced the same thing?

    hello
this is a well known issue, not acknowledge by Apple yet
here is the main subject about it

  • Older Airport Express Completely Stopped Working

After almost four years of flawless performance, my Airport Express up and "died" today. Resetting it with a paperclip, and multiple attempts to reconnect it have all failed. The LED simply won't light up under any circumstance.
Is it possible that my Airport just wore out?
    Any advice would be helpful.
    Thanks!

It's likely that the power supply in the AX has failed.
Repairs on an AX are not for the faint of heart, but if you want to attempt this, the link below will give you some idea of the procedure. But, if you ask a repair shop to attempt this, the cost of repairs would probably exceed the cost of a new AX(n).

  • HT1731 Airport Express: Can't connect to existing network in Client/Bridge Mode

I have a new Airport Express that I'm trying to use to connecto to an existing wireless network to provide wireless access to a Mac Mini with a broken antena.
The Mini has it's non-functioning wireless turned off, an ethernet cable connected to the WAN port of the Airport Express and I'm trying to follow the directionf from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1731?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US The relavent portion is:
    Using AirPort Utility 6
Connect an appropriate cable between the AirPort Express and the device it will serve.
Plug the AirPort Express into a power outlet.
After the AirPort Express starts up, select it in the AirPort Utility screen.
If you are now repurposing the AirPort Express, first reset it from Base Station in the menu bar and selectRestore Default Settings.
After the AirPort Express completes the restore process, choose it from the Wi-Fi menu in the upper-left corner.
    Click the Other Options button.
Select "Add to an existing network".
CHoose the Wi-Fi network name from the Wireless Network Name menu that you wish to join and click next.
Enter the password to this network if required.
I cannot get past step 3 w/o actually configuring the AE. If I follow the propmts on the screen (by jumping to step 7), I get the error "No Base Stations Found." I know the wireless router works because the Mini can reach it even with it's broken antena, and three other decives in the samre vicinity can connect to the existing wireless network.
If I turn on the wireless on the Mini, the Airport utility find the newtork, but gives a "unknown error" when trying to connect.  If I try to use the ethernet port on teh AE instead of the WAN port, the Airport Utility says that the ethernet cable needs to be connected to the WAN port, but Airport Utility shows a diagram for connecting to the Cable Modem Directly.
    I'm pretty stumped here.

Found a solution a few mins ago:
    Unplug the AirPort Express
Disable the WiFi on the Mini
In Network Preferences, set Ethernet as the default connection using DHCP.
Connect the Mini to the LAN port for the AirPortExpress
    Plug-in the AirportExpress
FROM A DIFFERENT COMPUTER CONNECTED TO THE WIRELESS NETWORK, follow steps 6-9 above.
This worked for me, but I don't know how to resolve the issue if you don't have a 2nd computer available.  I had also tried this via Airport Utility on an 1st generation iPad, but that didn't work. Maybe somebody in the same situation could try it with an iPad that can run a newer verion of iOS.

  • Airport Express disconnects randomly

My Airport Express disconnects me randomly, without any reason, and it even disappears for some time from the available networks. I was wondering if anyone had a fix for that.

I just wanted to echo the problem. I also have occasional disappearances of the AirPort Express, completely without reason. I'll be using the internet, or not...listening to music, or not...and poof, all signal bars are gone, no more connection between the computer and the AE. The LED on the AE stays green, indicating no problem.
I do a soft reset on the AE. Still not appearing. I shutdown, wait, and restart the computer. Nothing. I have to do a hard reset on the unit to get it to be "seen" by the computer again, and set up the AE and my wireless network from scratch. Annoying and frustrating.
This tends to happen about once or twice a week.
I guess it wouldn't bother me so much if I didn't have to re-enter all the Airport Express settings/passwords each and every time.
    Any ideas?

  • Airport Express "died" - no lights - no power? cannot reset - help!

I have had my airport express both extending my airport G network and have been using it to stream airtunes. I have had this thing hooked up for quite a while. always on. i woke up this morning and the light was off. i checked in itunes and it couldn't see it. so i unplugged it and tested the outlet and the outlet works. so i plugged it back in and still no light. i swapped the power cord attachment and still no light. i tried to soft, hard and factory reset but none of these seem to do anything. can't tell if they're working anyway since the light just stays off. i can't access the firmware or anything obviously because i think i can't even turn it on... any suggestions?
Airport Express A1084   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Using Airport G, Intel iMac and PowerBook G4

Just for the record, since I have no warranty coverage and can't get it fixed, but my 30 month old airport express is dead.
Even though it lived longer than the average lifespan of the AX, nevertheless it isn't my dream to buy a new base station.
Now I'm stuck with a PowerBook doing the ADSL connection distribution.
I must say I found it infuriating coming back home and finding the light is not aglow.
    Cheers!

  • Airport Express Light Out

I came home today to find myself disconnected from my Airport Express. When I went to check on it the light was neither green nor orange nor flashing. It was just off. I tried moving it to another outlet to test the outlets operability to no solution. Any ideas as to what may have suddenly went wrong with it? Thanks!

  • Internet speed slows down when connected via airport express

Internet speed slows down when connecting via airport express. When connecting directly via the timecapsulethe internet speed is ok, when connecting via the airport express the speed slows down. What can I do to change that? Any suggestions?

Turn off the AirPort Express completely as a test, and move your computer very close to the location of the Express.
As I said before, the Express can only extend the bandwidth (speed) that it receives from the Time Capsule, so the speed that you see there with the Express powered off will be the fastest speed of which the Express is capable.
The Express will make the signal go further when it extends....but it will not make the signal go faster.
A good location for a device that extends wirelessly is a point that is about half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you locate the AirPort Express too far from the Time Capsule or there are more than a couple of walls in the signal path, the signal will be very slow by the time that it reaches the Express....and the Express simply extends a signal that has already slowed down significantly.
If you already have the Express located about half the distance between the Time Capsule and general area that needs more wireless coverage, how many walls, ceilings or other obstructions are there in the signal path between the Time Capsule, the AirPort Express and the area that needs more coverage?
Often, due to obstructions, it is just not possible to achieve good performance when you try to extend a network wirelessly. The solution is connect the AirPort Express to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
There is virtually no signal loss with this type of connection, so the Express can be located exactly where it is needed and it will produce a much faster wireless signal in this type of setup.

  • Airport Express & OSX 10.3

Is Airport Express completly compatible with OSX 10.3 on a G4 running with a standard Airport Card?
E.g. I want to install and configure it, connect it to my Broadband modem, AirTunes, possibly add a second Airport Express for sharing a external HDD with the G4 and possibly with a Windows XP laptop. The Apple website is a bit confusing as it suggests in the tech specs that you need 10.4 http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/specs.html to achive these but elsewhere it seems to contradict some of these points.
I'm completly new to the Airport networking but technically very good with other networks (wireless/ethernet).
    Thanks

Just had the latest update to Mac OS X on automatic updates...
My Airport Express was refusing to be seen by the Airport Admin Utility nor by iTunes for the past week.
After rebooting from the update to Mac OS X and doing a hard reset on the Airport Express, suddenly everything works perfectly again.
Full marks to Apple for Results but...
_*No marks for Communication with customers that the problem was being identified and fixed :-(*_

  • Airport Express disconnects non-Macs

My Airport Express network has been working flawlessly for my MacBook Pro, including Airplay. However, my work PC and Android phone both experience frequent loss of internet. During this time, they both register still being connected to the network, but have no access to webpages or VPNs.
I read a suggestion to change my security type to TKIP rather than AES, so I set up the guest network with WPA/WPA2 TKIP and the issue has persisted. Any thoughts out there?

I just wanted to echo the problem. I also have occasional disappearances of the AirPort Express, completely without reason. • Airport Express premature death

Unfortunately I believe my Airport Express is dead. A few days ago its led has gone amber and it has dropped out of my WDS. Airport Utility can't find it and repeated factory resets have been fruitless. One interesting symptom is that the led stays solid amber but blinks green occasionally. This makes me believe that it’s trying to reset itself without any success, thus my conclusion of its death. A premature death, for I've been using it for only two years, which seems to me like a very short live span for something so expensive. Does anyone know any last thing I may try to resurrect my AE?

First off I'd like to know the procedure you used to reset the Airport Express?
Second did you try unplugging the express from AC then wait about a minute then plugging it back in?
If this does not help then make sure you have all your settings saved for the WDS setup, either go to file and select Save as or write down on the settings by hand.
Then reset the Express back to factory defaults:
Use a pen or a paper clip to press and hold the reset button until the
status light flashes quickly (about 5 seconds). The following will occur:
AirPort Express restarts with the following settings:
AirPort Express receives its IP address using DHCP.
The network name reverts to default Apple Network.
The AirPort Express password is reset.
Now that it is reset, configure the Express for WDS.
If this does not work post back and we will see if we can verify your WDS settings, and possibly attempt a different type of reset.
