Airport EXpress - Configuration Help Needed Please

Hi All,
I've just replaced my old Airport Extreme with the new 5th Gen product. I successfully migrated the settings from the old product and got the new one working pretty quickly - I am however slightly confused about the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz bands.
My understanding is that on the 'default' settings then the Airport will broadcast both a 2.4 and 5GHz signal with the same name and 'older' computers and my iPhones will pick up the 2.4GHz signal whereas 'newer' computers like my MacBook Pro will pick up the 5GHz signal. This doesn't seem to work however and my MacBook Pro is connects to the 2.4GHz band.
I tried renaming the 5GHz channel in the options to ****5GHz and the MacBook connected to this fine and gave me a noticeably faster connection. However when I did this the 2.4GHz devices slowed to a crawl and became unusable and the signal strength on these devices seemed to reduce noticeably.
Am I correct in assuming that I should be able to hook up 2.4GHz enabled devices to the 2.4GHz channel and 5GHz enabled devices to the 5GHz channel? If so I would really appreaciate some pointers as to how to stop the 5GHz band from crippling the 2.4GHz devices.
Thanks in advance of your help.

Typically, wireless devices will connect to the network with the strongest signal. Depending on the distance (or obstacles like walls, ceilings, floors, etc.), the device may connect to the 2.4 GHz band instead of the 5 GHz band. In practice, the 5 GHz band is only useable in the same room due to signal probagation loss characteristics of higher frequencies.
Keeping in mind that 802.11n can operate on both bands, "n" clients may select the 2.4 GHz band if it finds the signal quality better on this band.
Also keep in mind that non-"n" clients, when connected, will degrade the overall bandwidth on either band: "b" & "g" clients on the 2.4 GHz band and "a" clients on the 5 GHz band. If you don't have a requirement to support any of these non-"n" clients, I would suggest that you change the Radio Mode to: 802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11n only (2.4 GHz)

  • Fios Time Capsule Airport Express 101 Help Needed

I am trying to configure my network for the thirty-billionth time. I will start with my set-up, my goals and then my assumptions. If anyone has any thoughts, I am deeply appreciative.
    Set-up
    MI424WR-GEN2 router (802.11B/G/N; firmware: 20.10.7.5; henceforth "FR")
    Time Capsule (First Generation 802.11N)
    Two Airport Express (802.11N)
    One Airport Express (802.11G)
All Airport Expresses are running 7.5.2
Right now here's how I have my network configured:
The TC and AEs are in bridge mode. The TC is connected to the FR by ethernet. Physically, the TC and FR are right next to each other. I have two wireless networks set up. One created by the FR which I have the radio set in "Compatibility Mode" , i.e., accepting 802.11B/G/N. The second wireless network generated by the TC, is set to 802.11N Only (5Gz).
Optimally, I'd like to have one wireless network, instead of two. I'm willing to ratchet down the 802.11N only to a more compatible setting to get down to one network.
    Assumptions:
I cannot use my FR in bridging mode -- meaning it simply sends traffic to my TC which handles IP addressing, NAT, etc.
I cannot use my TC or AEs to extend my FR wireless network. And by "extend" I mean, use the boxes as signal boosters back to the FR. Physically, I have the ability, for instance, to move the TC from it current location to the master bedroom and connect it back to the FR via ethernet. In this case, I would like to be able to use the ethernet ports on the TC for some devices as well as use the wireless (single network preferablly) to boost the signal for some box-to-box applications I'm running as well as bandwidth intensive applications like Apple TV.
It is my understanding that it is impossible to extend a network with a TC or AE unless it is Airport network. It is possible to join a non-Airport network but I'm not sure what that buys you.
I am also under the assumption that the dual network configuration is impeding my ability to remotely connect to my iMac if it is running on the TC network which feeds back to the FR network.
I have read blogs that argue for simply shutting down the Fios radio and set the Fios router to bridge mode in essence and use the TC for all wireless. I have read blogs that suggest a plethora of different approaches.
I'm eager to figure this out and and promise to be responsive to questions and suggestions!
    Thanks in advance,
    JB

you're suggesting using both radios so both the FR and TC are broadcasting. if both devices are physically next to each other, is there any benefit in terms of range?
I must have misunderstood your earlier explantion about your desire to "extend" and thought that you were going to try to configure the TC to provide more wireless coverage for the FR network by locating the TC some distance from the FR router and connecting to it using a long Ethernet cable.
If you plan to leave the TC sitting next to the FR router, then there is obviously no benefit, range wise, and a probable wireless interference issue if both routers are broadcasting the same signals in close proximity.
The exception here would be if you plan to configure the TC as a 5 GHz band only while the FR provides that 2.4 GHz band. That type of setup is OK since both routers are broadcasting on different bands.
I remember reading somewhere that ActionTec doesn't play well with AE  in WPA so I'll stick to WEP.
If you want to configure the TC to provide a 5 GHz band, you cannot use WEP security.....only WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal....will work with 5 GHz.
That means that the FR router must also be configured to use the same security settings. If it's not, then you will have two separate wireless networks with the same name and password, but different secuirty. That is bound to cause connection issues.
If you cannot match up the FR security to the TC, then it would be better to assign a different name to the 5 GHz network to keep things straight.
The other issue that you may face is if the TC is configured to provide 5 GHz, then that is what the AX"n" devices will try to extend.  It's not easy to extend 5 GHz since the signals are quite a bit weaker than 2.4 GHz signals. You almost have to thave a line of sight relationship between the TC and AX devices for 5 GHz to be extended.
If you don't really need a dual band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network, then things would be a whole lot simpler if you turn off the wireless function on the FR router and setup the TC to provide a compatible "n/g/b" network, which the AX"n" devices will be able to extend.

  • Connecting via AirPort Express: Performance Help Needed.

    Hello,
I'm grateful for ideas, instruction, pointers to threads I may have missed re: improving performance/determining the cause of poor performance when connecting via AirPort Express.
The deal: Up to 6 devices are connected to our AirPort Express. Only three of these are ever used simultaneously, though all remain "on," in either sleep or hybernate mode. Performance across the network is terribly uneven. Current data rate stats (a snapshot by way of the AirPort utility, in order of distance from the router):
    iMac: 130 Mb/s
    Printer: 54 Mb/s
    Macbook Pro: 144 Mb/s
    iPhone: currently "off"
PC (Connected via Belkin USB-type Wireless Adapter): 2 Mb/s
    iPad: 39 Mb/s
Note: the Macbook Pro is often located in a room farthest from the hub, some 120 feet away and with partial direct line of site. Still, its performance is unimpeded.
At first glance, logic would dictate the worst problem is on the PC and caused by the Belkin adapter. But I've swaped that out for different USB solutions. Performace is seldom improved.
    Wondering if:
    a) The PC problem is in the data transfer rate of the PC bus. (Foregive me if I'm using "bus" incorrectly here. I'm guessing you'll know what I mean.) Or is it the nature of the USB adapters?
    b) Please also note that the Printer, which sits close to the router, often has a drop in data rate, sometimes to the single digits.
Again, I'm grateful for ideas, instruction, or pointers. Also for wisdom on "extending" the network, perhaps by adding another AirPort device. I'm rather clueless about such stuff.
Thanks in advance-  Best for the weekend-

    Thanks,
I'm pretty sure the card is seated properly (it works most of the time after all). I couldn't get it to work when I installed it because it wasn't seated properly, I pushed it in as far as it could possibly go and it has worked since (except after extended periods of use). The Airport express is three feet from the eMac with only a couple of bits of wood between them. The connection does not go down at times which I can link with the use of any particular appliances (When the eMac stops working, the iBook is always fine, even in a similar position). It is the apparently time-dependent aspect that I can't figure out (I only notice it on those, fairly infrequent, occasions when I am online for a few hours at a time). The eMac discussion group is a good tip. Ta.

  • Airport Express Install help needed as Airport utility for PC seems to sort of work?

    Hope someone can help.
Just bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi
It is connected to my cable modem, and i have my ps3 hard wired to it.
It is on and sending a signal because this computer is using the internet connect on it right now.
Problem is it is still unsecured as the Airport Utility can find it but then when I click continue to set-it up it gives me the following message.
An error occured while trying to access the apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again.
    Error 10057.
Any help would be great. I'm on a PC running Windows 7.

    Thanks for the reply.
All we have is the cable internet modem....it provides our phone and internet signals....tons of lights on it the front that are solid green or flashing green when in use.
I have connected a cable from the modem to the airport express (WAN spot). Plugged in the device (power) and then downloaded Airport Utility for windows from apples website (no disk came in the box).
I have have two wired connections running to the extreme as well, one is to my PS3 downstairs and the other I use when I'm at my desk with my office laptop. These shouldn't be affecting anything and I can get internet on my PS3 wired connecton so I know the router is functioning.
I installed Airport Utility and have rebooted my PC running windows 7, I click and opne the Utility. It finds the base station but when I click on the options to continue or manual I get the error message noted in my first post. I have alos noted that the router goes green light to yellow to flashing yellow. It does nothing but flash amber right now.
    Hope this helps for solutions?

    Zeppelin Mini.

(I wouldn't regard the MM-1 as a Zeppelin but not sure if B&W call it that).
I can't do much more to convince you!
You could always update that wiki

  • Airport Utility 5.6 will no longer read Airport Express Configuration; no longer able to stream from MacBook Pro

I have an old airport express ( 1st one ever I think)  up until today I was able to use it with iTunes and also Airfoil to stream music.  Today I cannot stream music from my MacBook Pro 2008 ( OS X 10.8.3)  Airfoil sees the Airport Express but cannot connect, iTunes see it, but will not connect.  When I try to connect with Airfoil the error message is "Airfoil was unable to connect to the remote speaker "little fish". Please check the remote speaker and try again."
iTunes just tries to connect and then times out.
I have AU 5.6 in order to use the old AE.  It sees the AE and give me a summary page.  But if I try "manual set up" or the "continue" button - I get "reading the Airport Express configuration" and then eventually "An error occured while reading the configurarion.  Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again.  (-6753) "
I tried a soft reset, no help.
I tried a hard reset and I was able to see the new airport express and it allowed me to set it up again, then it restarted and everything was the same as before I reset.
I can stream to the Airport Express from my iPhone and my iPad
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong?

It appears that the printer is OK and is on the network.  Eventually you may want to set a static IP address for it, but let's get things working first.
The first thing I would try would be to reset the printing system on all the problem Macs:
    - Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
    - Right (control) click the print queue area and select Reset Printing System.
    - Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
If this does not do it there may be something going on with the router.  I have a few ideas if this is required.  Let me know.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • I have inherited 2 Power Macs sans Airport- what do I need please?

Hi everyone, I'm a first time poster, long time reader. Thanks for all the help everyone has given me through other's threads!
Problem: I have inherited 2 Power Macs and one Mac Pro, none of which have wifi capability.
In order to rectify this, can someone please tell me which Airport (Expresses?) I need to purchase for each one? Feel free to be specific- I can use G or N but prefer N. I plan to buy on a popular bidding site or equivalent.
All are different, here are the specs:
1: MacPro 1,1 (G5 2.66GHz, Quad Core Intel...) (No OS yet, would Lion be pushing it?)
    2: PowerMac 7,3 (G5 2.3GHz, Dual Core PPC...) (10.5.8)
    3: PowerMac 7,3 (G5 2.0GHz, Dual Core PPC...) (10.5.8)
Please don't ask what I will do with them, I do not intend to share my plans for world domination on an open forum.

OK, thanks for that, but I should have been clearer:
I would rather have the internal apple solution- many are available on auction sites (£5-£10), I just need to know which one is appropriate for my use. Can anyone supply me with a model / part number for the original Airports used in a PowerMac G5? Specs follow:
    2: PowerMac 7,3 (G5 2.3GHz, Dual Core PPC...) (10.5.8)
(The Intel G5 airport search is over. I have found an airport extreme card on an auction site and bought it for £5.)

  • Multiple ethernet network adaptors + MySQL/php5: configuration help needed

I would be grateful if someone could give me some advice on how to configure multiple ethernet adapters under OS X 10.5.6
I have set up my system to work nicely with two ethernet network adapters, each with its own fixed IP. This bit works just fine. The machine supports two separate servers - a mail server and the OS X Apache2 server. I have configured the mail server to only listen to one of the IPs, and the Apache2 server to listen to the other (via httpd.conf). The system also has MySQL and php5 installed / enabled, and these services are only used by the Apache2 server.
The problem I have is that when I start the machine, initially the php5 system cannot connect reliably to the MySQL database system. The fix I have found is to temporarily make the ethernet adapter connected to the mail server 'inactive'. While this is so, the php5/MySQL connection to Apache2 works. Curiously, once an initial connection between php5 and MySQL has been made, subsequently I can make the mail server's ethernet adapter active again without further problems.
I initially thought this might be due to 'service order' issues - but changing the service order (e.g. putting the Apache adapter 'above' the mail adapter in the service order does not help. The fix only works by making the mail adapter inactive temporarily.
I suspect that there is some configuration change I can make to clarify the setup I have. The MySQL and Apache installations only need to talk to the Apache server - but I am not sure how to record this configuration in the OS X system.
Thanks in advance for any assistance that you can provide.

  • Can't read the airport express configuration

    hi there,
i've got an AIPORT EXPRESS (b/g) V 6.3, which has been working marvellously for 4 year, with 3 different laptop ( powerbook, macbook pro and PC).
since last week end, my connection on internet was really slow (with the ethernet cable the connection is really fast as usual).
So I've reseted it. then reconfigure it. no problem.
then this saturday my girl friend couldn't see the network on her PC.
    so I've resetted it again!
since then my macbook pro see it, also my airport utility, but it can't connect to it....
airport utility says :reading the airport express configuration... and nothing !!!!
EDIT: also iTunes can't see the AE anymore...
i just don't know what to do.
    thank you for your solution
(hope my english not to bad)

Hello Relaxxx. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Although I know you have tried several resets, please try another "factory default" reset to get the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) back to its original factory configuration so that we can administer it.
After resetting it, connect your MacBook Pro directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, run the AirPort Utility to configure it. Where you able to access it now?
Once configured, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable. Using the AirPort Status icon in the menu bar, verify that you are connected to the AX's wireless network. Are you now able to both find it and connect from the icon?
Once you verified that you can access the AX, both via wire and wirelessly from the Mac, try the PC.

  • Help needed please, with Iphone stuck with apple picture and progress bar after software update attempted

Help needed please, everytime I try to update the software version on my iphone it comes up with a message saying it could not be completed and is now frozen with the apple picture and progress bar on it. Do I unplug it and hope the macbook pro sees it again, I also stupidly did not back up before starting the download which I realise I will have to go back to the previous back up. This keeps happening, everytime I do this type of update, I'm starting to think I should just give up on updating my software on the Iphone. I thought it was happening because I was using a window based computer to do the updates, this time I used my Macbook Pro. Please somebody help

Have you guys been able to activate your iphone yet? I bought an iphone 4s from eBay and it worked fine, but the previous user had left some data on it, so last night I used the "erased all content and settings" to restore it to factory setting so I can start fresh and restore my backup. But now I'm stuck at the activation screen (I get the same "the activation server is temporarily unavailable")  and can't get it to activate, even if I use my old deactivated AT&T sim card (I'm on straighttalk now).
I might try activating it with an active AT&T sim card from my fiancee's phone when she gets home, so I'll let you know how that works outs.
If it's true that the server is down; anyone know when it will be back up again? Thanks in advance.

  • Ethernet configuration Airport Express won't work - please help!

I'm trying to add an Airport Express to my network but having lots of trouble. I'd like to duplicate the settings of the existing one in the new one and simply change the IP address of the new one. (The existing unit has a static IP and works fine.) The network seems to be interfering with the setup process, so I connected my iBook directly to the new AP Express via ethernet. In Airport Admin, when I click other I get a dialog with the IP address 10.0.1.1 (which I assume is the default IP of a new AP Express) and a password field. The dialog is inactive until a password is entered, but I don't know what the default password, if any, is.
Will entering a default password allow me to do the configuration? What is it? If not, how do I configure the unit?

Thanks Duane. Couldn't find it anywhere. I'm still unable to connect to my new AP Express.
I created a new location called "AP config" and set ethernet TCP/IP to DHCP. After connecting computer to AP Express w/cable, clicking "Other" in AP Admin, and entering "public" into password field, I got a dialog telling me "unasble to read configuration."
    Any suggestions?
