AirPort Express crashes when I set it to "n only" mode

Hi,
I'm trying to set my AirPort Express to "n only" mode to improve the performance of my small home network (3 MacBooks), but every time I do that the AirPort hangs. Here's what I'm doing:
* Open AirPort Utility, go to Manual Setup
* Under the Wireless tab, change the Radio Mode to a 802.11n mode (the problem happens with 5GHz or 2.4GHz)
* Apply changes
After this, the AirPort tries to restart, but never really do. I get the solid amber light for about 3 or 4 minutes, then it flashes green and amber again (denoting a reboot, according to the manual). This happens ad infinitum.
Any ideas why this is happening? I already tried resetting the device to factory defaults and creating the networks as "n only" but no luck either.
Does the AirPort generate any logs I could look into?
Thanks in advance.

Does the AirPort generate any logs I could look into?
Yes. AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Advanced tab > Logs and Statistics > Logs tab

  • Airport Express crashing when serving new iPad

My WiFi network consists of an Airport Extreme that is connected to my cable, and an Airport Express on the third floor that is used to expand the network. Both units are running the latest 7.5.2 firmware and are connected with Cat 5 cable. I have no problem with my Macbook Pro, Macbook, MacMini, or iPhone 4 connecting to the Airport Express upstairs. However, whenever I use my new iPad there, after 10 or 15 minutes of great connectivity, the Airport Express goes off-line (light turns from Green to Yellow). I can restore it to operation by unplugging the Airport Express for a few minutes (a few seconds won't fix it), then plugging it back in. However within a few minutes, if the iPad is allowed to connect, it will go off line again.
If I keep the iPad turned off and use any of my other Mac computers, everything is fine and the Express stays happy for hours at a time, but the new iPad kills it within a few minutes.
By the way, this the the EXACT issue I had a couple of years back when I bought my first iPhone. Things were very unstable until Apple updated the Express firmware. I have the sense that this is yet another bug in the Express.
Is anybody else having this issue or have a resolution?

I am having the same problem, but with my old airport extreme. I've yet to install the new one - I'm hoping it will fix the problems.

  • Airport Express Crashes when backing up to a network shared drive

I have an iMac with a 1TB external drive which it has been using to do time machine backups. I recently decided to backup my Macbook to the same drive using the same disk over the network.
It starts fine and then after 20-40 minutes or so the Airport Express stops working and it needs to be unplugged to get it to work again.
Any thoughts on why this might be happening and what I could do to fix the problem?
    iMac G4 with 1TB external Drive 10.5.8
    Macbook White with 10.6.2
    Airport Exress with 6.2 firmware
    Thanks!

please clarify if your external drive is connected to an Airport Express. if so, an Airport Express does not work with external HDs - its USB port supports printers ! if you mean an Airport Extreme, please be advised that Apple does not officially support this setup (even though some users have reported that it works for them).

  • Using my Actiontec modem's wifi, it doesn't find my new airport express.  When I use the new airport express network I created error message says ip address is wrong.  Help setting this new airport express up

Using my Actiontec modem's wifi, it doesn't find my new airport express.  Using the new airport express network I just set up it says the ip address is invalid.  What can I do to overcome this blinking amber light and error messages?

You need to begin by configuring the AEX to Join an existing network (Bridge Mode.) You can then connect to it using Wi-Fi, but the AEX will not extend your existing network.
If you can connect the AEX to your existing router using Ethernet, then you could use it to Create a new network. Otherwise, if you want to extend your existing network you will need to get a Wireless Access Point - WAP - from a non-Apple product like D-Link.

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

No, you cannot seperate the audio and video stream.
You can use optical audio to a sound system (I use sony sound bar) and play the audio via that.

Ipod touch: 4th generation Upto date software
    Airport Express: Latest model
    Iphone 5: Upto date software

This can sometimes be the result of a faulty/damaaged USB sync cable.  Do you have another cable you could test it out with?

  • IPhone 5s connect to airport express but when I play in iTunes no option to pick airport ?

iPhone 5s connect to airport express but when I play in iTunes no option to pick airport ?

If anyone would like to know how to fix this, I discovered the answer.
I have no idea what IPv6 is and I care not, but apparently now, all of a sudden, Apple makes iTunes talk to Airport Express units using IPv6. However, it didnt bother to make the Airport Express units expect this first, so iTunes can see the Airport Express, but it cant talk to it.
Anyway, I found that you have to manually go into your Mac settings (scary stuff if you are a non technical person like me) and turn off IPv6.
To do this, go to "Finder > Go > Utilities > Terminal"
    type
    networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi  (hit enter)
    Then type
    networksetup -setv6off Ethernet (hit enter)
and magically your iTunes will talk to your Airport Express units again.
I presume at some point we will have to undo this as technology moves on and everything uses IPv6, so when that happens go into Terminal again and type
    networksetup -setv6automatic Wi-Fi  (hit enter)
    Then type
    networksetup -setv6automatic (hit enter)
    Thanks Apple for that.

  • Airport Utility Crashes when extending wireless network

Hi. I have an AirPort Extreme which generates my wi fi network set up in bridge mode as it is connected via Ethernet cable to my Sky hub. I have an airport express I am trying to set up to extend the range but when I use Airport Utility to configure it it gets to "reading base station settings" and then crashes. Airport Utility on my windows PC can't even see the Airport Express. I have tried a hard reset on both the extreme and the express but no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks!

As a last resort, try connecting an Ethernet cable from your computer to the WAN port on the AirPort Express and see if AirPort Utility can configure the Express that way.
If it can, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable once the Express is operating correctly.
If still no luck, the Express is very likely defective. Please take it to an Apple Store....if you have one near you....or contact Apple Support directly for further assistance.

  • New Airport Express Crashes my Network

Hello.  I have a 3TB Time Capsule, newest generation, and tried to extend the network with the newest generation airport express.  The time capsule is connected via ethernet cable to my U-Verse modem.  The U-verse model has wifi broadcasting turned off--my time capsule is my only wireless network.  When i set up the airport express, i properly told it to extend the network created by my time capsule.  Both devices have green lights for about a minute and then the network crashes--all of my devices lose connectivity and the only way to restore connectivity is to: (1) unplug the express and (2) restart the time capsule.  I've done hard-resets on both routers multiple times to no avail--my network keeps crashing.  Both routers are running the latest software versions.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am probably going to return the express tomorrow if I can't get this figured out.  I've done this in the past with older generation airports, I honestly don't know why this isn't working.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

The new Express is not really on your network but is able to communicate with the laptop using Bonjour. Here's Apple's explanation for the flashing amber:
Startup is complete, but AirPort Express didn't get an IP connection. Depending on your setup, it may mean AirPort Express is out of network range, unplugged from Ethernet, lacks a path to the Internet (or local router), or that there's an issue with your Internet service provider.
Does your PowerMac G5 have an Airport card? If it does then it isn't associated with the new Airport. Both should be listed under the Airport menu but only one has a checkmark. If it doesn't have a card it won't be able to see the new Airport until you configure the new Airport as an extension of the first wireless network, called WDS or Wireless Distribution System.

  • I have just bought an airport express and want to set it up as a base station to use in a hotel with my Ipad2.

At home I have a PC wired into a wifi router. How do I set up my airport express with this configuration please?

If you are on a Windows machine, you will need to download the Airport Admin Utility from Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1391
From there, you can configure the Airport Express. Set up the Airport to:
    - create it's own network
    - share an IP
    - use 802.11n 2.4GHz (g,b compatible)
    - use WPA2 for security
Then, test that the iPad can connect to it.
Now, when you take it to a hotel and plug it into their wired network, the Airport will get the IP from the hotel and share it out to your iPad

  • AirPort Express Configuration When Ethernet Settings Are Unknown?

I'd like to set up my AirPort Express at home, then use it as a wireless hot spot when traveling (the hotels have wired access and ethernet cables). I have a DSL modem and a wireless router at home, and I will set up the AirPort Express Utility on my notebook. I will not be traveling with my notebook, however, just my iPad. Can I do this?

I will not be traveling with my notebook, however, just my iPad. Can I do this?
Yes. The following setup will work in most hotels:
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Your choice
Radio Mode = 802.11n (b/g compatible) is a good choice
    Channel = Automatic
    Security = WPA/WPA2 Personal or WPA2 Personal
    Password = Your choice
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings. Plug the Express in at the hotel (or into one of the LAN ports on your router if you want to test it) and power it up. Open your browser and the hotel's log in page will appear so you can agree to terms and pay the fees.
Important...some hotels will not allow more than one computer at a time to connect, so for example you may not be able to have your computer and iPhone connected at the same time. Unfortunately, no way around this.
