Airport express & digital audio through usb

Can airport express stream digital audio through usb to use with a usb DAC?

No. Digital optical audio is only available via the AirPort Express' audio port only.

  • Can the Airport Express stream audio through my Xbox 360?

I am not asking if my Xbox 360 can CONNECT to my Airport Express. That I have already done.
What I am asking is that my Xbox 360 does not have audio (audio cables seem to not work) and I wonder if I can stream the audio through my speakers wirelessly from my Airport Express. Or does it have to be a IOS device to be able to airplay?

Sorry, but no. The Xbox 360 is not an AirPlay "server" so it cannot stream to an AirPlay "speaker." In this case the speaker is the AirPort Express.

  • Can MacBook Pro output digital audio via usb?

I'd like to output digital audio via usb. Can it be done from iTunes? This would allow me to go directly to my dac and then to my preamp.
    Thanks.

Russell, there are quite a variety of devices that accept digital audio over USB from any mac with a USB port - see http://www.trendsaudio.com/EN/Product/USBAudiodesc.htm for one example.
Try a google on MAC USB Audio OUTPUT any you should pop up some useful options.

  • Using Airplay with iPhone & Airport Express, outputing audio on both

    Hello,
My nice new Airport Express works fine with my iPhone - awesome !
However, choosing to output audio to Airport Express stops audio on the iPhone.
I would like to continue outputing audio on the iPhone as well as the Airport express (both checked).
    Is this possible ?
This way I could have a set of speakers connected to iphone in the living room and another set in the kitchen playing in unison...
    I hope it's possible !
    Thanks,
    Dylan

Ok. Now I'm really annoyed. I bought a second airport express hoping to at least stream from the iPhone to two airports since I can't stream and play on iPhone.
Even though the iPhone sees both airports it will only play on one at a time.
How is this'playing music around your house'?
So the only way to play to multiple airports is with iTunes ?
That's literally ******** ie. the tech is fully capable but is being ******** by apple..?
    Am I correct ?

Ok, if you are connecting the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to the existing wireless network, then the DSL in the next room is most likely a combination DSL modem and wireless router. Thanks for clarifying that for me.
Although they may only be separated by a single wall, the building material used in that wall may be enough to prevent the AX from receving a "good" signal from the DSL router.
Since I don't know what computing equipment you have available, please check out this AirPort User Tip: AirPort - Optimal Base Station Placement to see if you can get some SNR measurements at the location of your AX. To do this properly, you will want to power-off the AX and only get these measurements for the DSL router.

  • AirPort Express Base Station and USB Webcam

I see that the AirPort Express Base Station has a USB port.  Is it possible to connect an off the shelf USB webcam, maybe from Microsoft or Logitech, to the AirPort Express Base Station USB port and use it as a wireless surveillance system?  Of course you would need proper monitoring software.  You could have an AirPort Extreme Base Station connected to your network and several AirPort Express Base Stations with USB webcams attached keeping track of say your home, your business, etc...  If you had the correct monitoring software, you could view any motion triggers from let's say your iPhone.  The monitoring software would work with both Mac and Windows.  Great idea right?  Is this idea even feasible?  If so, how?  If not, why not?  I'm just trying to figure out a way using standard off the shelf USB webcams.  Any suggestions would be helpful and I thank you in advance.

Well your best bet would be to get a wireless webcam! Cisco makes a great one as well as D-Link! Here are a few models:

    D-Link DCS-930L Wireless N Network Camera
Cisco-Linksys Wireless-N Internet Home Monitoring Camera

  • HighRes Audio through USB

I had the Z2 since last year. Because my old headphones (Sony MDR-F1) are nearly dead and the Z2 supports HighRes Audio through USB (external DAC) I bought the Sony MDR-1ADAC. I was happy, everything worked well and the headphones are killer. There were just two tiny things I didn't liked about the Z2:a) The haptic of the frame was not that goodb) the USB port behind the cover on the left side - very bad if you want to put your phone in your pocket while listening to music Thus I bought the Z3+ When I connect my Sony MDR-1ADAC through USB nothing happens on the Z3+ and music, etc. is still played through the internal stereo speakers. The Z2 had a setting that enables "external USB-DAC" and the Z3+ doesn't BUT the Z3+ additionally (compared to Z2) supports HighRes through Bluetooth and DSEE HX. So the Z3+ has better support for HighRes Audio but at the same time less support. What the heck is going on Sony?

    I've recently had to add
    Enable=Source,Sink,Headset,Gateway,Control,Socket,Media
to /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf. And then restart the bluetooth service / daemon.
    # systemctl restart bluetooth.service
    # or, whatever ...
    # rc.d restart bluetooth
Then it works again. This may just be a systemd artefact, however.

  • Connect Airport Express digital to DAC to high end audio

I want to connect my airport express to my DAC. The problem I have is that my DAC only has a COAX optical line in. The Airport Express has a digital out but I understand it is only Toslink. What is the best way to connect them together?
    Any suggestions are very welcome!
    Regards, Harm

You could look at the Sound Blaster DTS-610 for $99. I used one to convert from the digital mini jack on a SB extreme audio card to a coaxial jack on my Yamaha receiver for 5.1 surround before I got a new motherboard with optical output.

  • Airport Express Optical Audio Output: huge clicks... Solutions

I'm using Airport Express to stream ALE audio to a Chime DAC, via the Toslink optical connector. Every time iTunes stops playing for more than about 5 seconds, a huge click is sent to the digital output, which is... you can imagine. Very annoying.
I don't understand how digital silence (a series of consecutive 0's whose equivalent is 0 volts) flipping to actual 0 Volts (as in... the bloody circuit is off) would produce a click in any properly designed product! Hi-Fi amps have built in ramp functions on the power rails to avoid that on the speaker outputs since the 50's !!!
Is there a way to configure Airport Express (I've looked in Airport Utility) so that it keeps the interface active - in other words, sending digital black whenever audio from iTunes is not present at the input? The thing is plugged into a wall socket anyway! I don't see any conservation of energy in switching it off, if it's done in such a rude and annoying way.
    Any ideas?
Any Apple techs ever read these forum entries?
The headphone output of all Macs since the switch to Intel is flawed, and I have yet to see ONE reaction from them to the thousands of posts on this forum about that subject.
Just thought I'd waste a bit more of my time here again.
But I'd love to hear from anyone with a decent solution.

I apologize for my subject topic not ending with a question mark. I could swear I typed one in. So again, sorry if you got here thinking I had found a solution to this.

  • Airport Express - Discontinuous Audio when used for streaming music

I recently installed a new iMac with Leopard along with Time Capsule as the base station connected wirelessly to the iMac. Added Airport Express to this network and everything looks like it works after a couple of tries.
When I play iTunes on the iMac and select the Airport Express speakers, I get a discontinuous sound. iTunes plays the music for 10 sec, stops for a few sec, then picks up where it left off...repeat endlessly.
iTunes plays back fine on the computer's speakers.
Any thoughts on how to fix the discontinuous music streaming ?

    1. Check to make sure that iTunes isn't hogging all of your CPU when it is running. If your CPU starts running at 100%, you will get audio dropouts. Make sure that unnecessary processes don't load at boot time.
ok, cpu is fine, between 0 and 25% when playing
    2. In Quicktime, Edit -> Preferences -> Quicktime Preferences -> Audio -> uncheck "Safe Mode". If this doesn't work, then recheck. You should reboot to make sure.
DOne, rebooted, undone, redone, nothing helps
    3. In Airport Express Utility, Wireless -> Wireless Options -> Check on Use Interference Robustness
    also done
    4. If you have a lot of wireless internet routers in your neighbourhood you can try changing your wireless channel. Netstumbler will show you what's going on in your area.
tried all of the 13 channels!
    5. If using a router and your Airport Express is a client of your router, move the antennas on your wireless router. One of the antennae should be at a 45 degree angle from the router so that the two antennas don't cause a conflict with each other. (Imagine dropping two stones into a pool of water where the waves created by the stones are equal to the radio waves produced by your router; the waves hit each other and distort the path of each one; by moving one of the antennae on an angle, this conflict is avoided.)
antennas turned as you told me, still not better
    6. In iTunes, you might try changing the following: Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Change the buffer streaming to "small" (or one of the others).
done, and also tried "medium" and "large"....
    7. If you are using a third-party router, and you are comfortable with changing the settings, and if you have this setting, you might want to try lowering or increasing the Beacon Interval.
not familiar with this, what is a third party router? I have one main router for adsl and digital tv, + trying to get airport working for music...
    8. Of course, don't have a metal filing cabinet, or hollow tubes (yeah, even toilet paper rolls -- so no iTunes in the bathroom, please) -- as these would also interfere with broadcast.
no interferences, no metallic cabinet, no toilets around lol
what can I do more? give it back to the shop, buy a MAC computer instead of my pc? I think I'm going to give that thing back to the shop....
Thank you very much for all your help but here I'm realy, realy getting fed up with this. Either it should work perfectly, either not, but here, sometimes it works, sometimes not, and there's no appearant reason when it drops.....you'll never know when it's gonna happen and for how long.
    So disapointed!

  • Sound output to Airport Express horrible except through iTunes Airplay

I've had an Airport Express for 2 or so months now, and I use it for both wifi routing as well as its Airplay functionality, wired into my stereo. I've used it with Airplay directly from iTunes as well as setting the system sound output on my Mac to go over to the Airport Express.
As of today, only the Airplay over iTunes works without issue. When I go to the system sound preferences and select the Airport Express, I hear a very loud pop, and all output is muffled and highly distorted. If iTunes is playing, that sounds bad too.  However, with the system sound prefs set to internal speakers and ONLY iTunes set to Airplay, it sounds fine.  This is not good at all for me, as I often send audio from Youtube and other streaming sites to Airport Express to play on my stereo.
How can I get sound output to Airport Express from the sound preferences to play nice again?
PS, I have the identical issue with Apple TV, though I don't use it regularly for Airplay. System output to Apple TV is terrible, iTunes Airplay to it is fine, and the audio from content on Apple TV is fine.

Is there any way to output any sound from a computer to Airport Express, not just iTunes?
Yes, check out Rogue Amoeba's AirFoil.

  • Airport Express and Audio

I'm new to Macs and Airport but so apologies for my ignorance... but I want to know is it possible to send all audio to my airport express connected speakers or can it only be done with itunes. At the moment i have my speakers connected to my airport express but when i want to watch videos or dvd's or anything else with sound eg Skype I have to unplug my speaker and connect them to my computer again. Any clues would be great... Thanks

The program you're looking for is called Airfoil. It's not freeware though. It does cost $25. But depending on your needs it could be worth it.
But there is a sync issue with local play back. You might want to wait for version 3. They've corrected the sync issue with Video for playing on Remote Speakers.

    Hope that helps a little.

  • Airport Express - Airtunes Audio Dropouts in client mode

The last week I spend trying many tips from this and other forums to get my Itunes running without dropouts, without any results. Heres a list what I did:
    Firmware downgrade to 6.1.1.
    Disabled IPv6
Increased Buffer Size in Itunes to BIG
    Let OnyX runover
    Disabled Dashboard
I works fine in Network Mode, but I cannot connect to Internet, and I would like to listen and surf...
My config: Netgear Wireless router, Airport Express and MacBook 2Ghz Intel Core Duo.
Sometimes it seems that playing directly from CD causes less dropouts - allthough the amount of data is much higher.
I also noticed that my windows XP laptop produces much less dropouts than MacBook, it reconizes even the remote speakers in Itunes, allthough there is no Airtunes software installed. I tried to install Airtunes there, but it didnt recognize AE, allthough it found the new network, well..
The system itself is rather new and with 1,5 GB of Ram it should be running like a rocket...
I think the problem is either that there is not enough bandwith, maybe Airport reserves an amount for netsurfing, or there is a hardware problem with the build in Aiport, that cannot stream continously audio in client mode.
No neighbor networks here, no microwave however there is a satelite dish cable, but this must disturb Aiport even when running in Single Mode, do I think wrong ?
Some users report that the dropouts occured when updating Itunes...what should I do ?
Send back to apple or wait for an update ?
Will apple take care for the few MacBook Core Duo Users or invest more in the newer series ( Core 2 Duo ) ?
Any help much appreciated. Greetings, Walter
Mac Book Intel Core Duo 2Ghz 1,5 GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

After further testing it figures out that the problem seems to be at the Hardware of the Airport Express.
When running in client mode, the green light is flashing always, so data seems to be sent correctly from MacBook - also from a PC Laptop. So MacBook´s Airport is OK. The dropouts appear, allthough the light is continously flashing.
When running the seperate Network MAC and PC stream perfectly.
Now I´m sitting here, listen to music from PC and surfing with my MacBook...
I also tried to connect the second Network via WDS and configure the Internet Connection to my existing Network via WDS and use the AE as a remote Base Station - doesnt work, because it doesnt like the dynamic IP Adress of my Netgear Router, I think AE needs a fixed one, I wonder why AE could not handle a dynamic IP...
The other question is, if configuring Internet with WDS would solve the problem ? - I think that is the same problem just from another side, Airtunes and Internet on one AE, and the AE could not handle that...what do you think ?
If the Internetconnection breaks for 1 second it doesnt matter, but you hear that when airtuning music...
    Thanks for any statements.

  • Airport Express and an External USB HDD

    Hello All,
If you can help that would be brilliant. I have just been given an Airport Express as a present. Not sure why. I am wondering if there is a way to allow the software / hardware to pick up a USB HDD instead of a USB Printer. I noticed that the Airport software does show you a disk option in settings but it greyed out so you can not select it. I have got the Airtunes working and that is brilliant!!! I just dont want to have to return it if I can get the USB HDD to work with it.
    I hope you can help.
    Terry

Are there any other pieces of hardware from Apple that do Airtunes and USB HDD that are available?
No. The only device compatible with Airtunes is the AX.

  • Airport Express only works through Ethernet and not wireless

    Hi there,
As it states in the header - Airport Express works when I connect it either directly to my iMac or through my Cable modem using an ethernet cable. Unfortunately, as soon as I unplug the ethernet and try to use it wirelessly, it disappears from the AirPort Utility view and I can no longer connect. Strangely the green light stays on solid, no flashing.
I'm no wireless connectivity expert so am sure it's something basic I've missed. Would be most grateful of any pointers.
    Thanks

    For the short term ...
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing BT HomeHub's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)
For the longer term, since the BT HomeHub is not WDS-compatible with the AX, the AX would need to be connected directly, via Ethernet, to the BT and then re-configured as a bridge to allow the BT to continue to provide NAT & DHCP services for the entire network.
