Airport Express disappears in bridge mode

I'm using my Airport Express as a Router. I'm living in a student dorm and want to have access to other computers in the dorm network, so I set up the router in bridge mode so it does not create its own network. Point is, now I can't access the airport anymore via the airport utility, as if it doesn't exist. I can't access it via IP and if I try via name, it loads the settings forever and eventually aborts. This is not a huge problem since everything works and I tend not to change a running system, but my WiFi-analysis-app recommends switching the channels and I would want to try if that improves the network - which I can't, since I can't access the airport.
Any ideas? I do not want to reset the airport to factory settings since that would probably change the IPs within my network, which means I would need to submit every single machine in it to the student dorm internet people again (every single IP needs to be approved by them before it can access the internet).
Oh, and I can't access the airport when connecting via LAN either.

The reason it does not work is the Express is on an IP that is different to the main IP of the computer..
Or indeed in bridge it is on exactly the same IP as the main system and is also therefore lost.
When you applied for IP addresses did you apply for one for the Express??
Are you allowed to use a router? Most dorm systems ban them due to the issues involved.
Oh, and I can't access the airport when connecting via LAN either.
When you changed the airport from dhcp and nat to bridge, the Express should have got an IP from the main router.. along with all the other clients..
If all your computers/devices are on the dorm network.. when you changed to bridge I am a bit lost how that happened.. as you should have had to re-register all the computers/devices.
Lets work from default.
When lost the system will go to default.. the IP of the Express by default is 10.0.1.1 (but in bridge without a register on the system I have no idea what it will go to).
Please set one computer to IP of 10.0.1.10 with standard subnet 255.255.255.0 (you do not need to fill in gateway or dns).
Try and access the Express now.. no luck.. unplug the ethernet from the Express WAN port.. reboot the Express.. now try again.
When there is no chance of getting an IP It should revert to default.
No luck sorry there is next to no way around but hard reset.
However tell me what IP you get on the computer now.. without changing anything and with the system working and internet running.
A screenshot could help..

  • AirPort Express in a bridge mode

I'm connected to ISP with ADSL router which has it's own NAT and DHCP. I had an idea to create WiFi network with AirPort Express (N), but AX's LAN connection never works.
I found a very strange steps that solve the problem:
    1. I set AX in a NAT mode. In this mode an option appears that allows to set Ethernet WAN-port speed = 10Mbit/full-duplex. The rest settings are meaningless. Then i save the configuration. After restart the AX is blinking amber with "Dual NAT" error (it's true!)
    2. Then I set AX in a bridge mode and save. After restart it lights green and works ok with internet functioning and DHCP from ADSL router working for WiFi clients as well.
But if i power off AX - then after powering on and booting the light is finally changing this way: 1 sec green, 1 sec amber, 1 sec off. And so on. The indicator on the ADSL router is turning on and off synchronously. Repeating steps 1 and 2 does the repair. I've tested it many times.
I have found no other ways to set AX in a bridge mode. The speed 10FD is critical - no other speeds work. Other devices are connected at auto mode and show the speed 100MBit/full duplex. The ADSL modem is ZXDSL 531B (it has internal WiFi, which i do not switch on)

It's not the right behavior. I suspect that your DSL router is a little buggy, because why else are you turning off its radio for a different one? But you could also try exchanging the Apple unit. It makes no sense that the Apple unit only runs in 10 Mbit mode. Have you looked online for firmware updates for both your DSL modem and your AX? That would be the best place to start. Oh, and try a different Ethernet port and a different Ethernet cable.
    Good luck!

  • How many IP's can Airport Express support in bridge mode?

I have an Airport Extreme (5th Generation) and I have an A/V system upstairs. I have 4 devices that need a 10/100 base T ethernet connection. If I setup my Airport Express in bridge mode and go into a 5 port gigabit switch, will it be able to manage more than 1 IP?

The AirPort Express can handle up to 10 simultaneous connections. Since the Express will be in Bridge Mode, the IP addressing will be handled by the "upstream" router....your AirPort Extreme.

  • Question about Airport Express in WDS bridge mode with wired clients

I am looking to buy an Airport Extreme N router, and then use the Express I already have to extend my network using WDS. I intend to setup the Express as a bridge in WDS mode and then connect a wired client to the Express. The question is can I connect a multi port switch or hub to the Express so that multiple wired clients can use the bridge or does Express only support one wired client. I looked at the FAQ at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108038 but it doesn't address that.
    Thanks

Hmmm, I haven't actually tried that myself, but it should work since, as a Remote Base Station in a WDS, the Ethernet port on the AX acts like a LAN port.

  • Airport Express in 802.11n mode with an Xbox 360

I have an Airport Express (with software 7.5.2) and am having problems connecting my Xbox 360 in 802.11n mode.  I have an Xbox 360 (one year old, not the new 360 S Console) and an Xbox Wireless N Networking Adapter (Model 1398).
I believe my Airport Express is working fine as I've been able to connect my MacBook and iPad 2 when I've run the Airport Express in any combination of modes -- 802.11g 2.4 or 5.0 GHz, 802.11b compatibility, etc.
I've also found that the Xbox will connect when I run the Airport Express in 802.11g mode, but it fails to connect in any n mode.  I've tried several combinations including varying the security -- WPA2 or no security at all.  Since the same Xbox and Apple hardware can connect when running in 802.11g mode, and I've got Apple devices talking to the AE in 802.11n mode, I'm suspecting the Xbox hardware.
I've looked through a few forum posts here, and most of them seemed to be older and referenced a bug in an older version of the AE software.  At least one mentioned that the person had a defective Xbox wireless adapter, which I'm beginning to suspect.
I've even turned on syslog logging on the Airport Express and used my MacBook as the syslog server.  Even though I've turned the Syslog level up to 7 (Debug) on the AE, I don't get any messages about Xbox connection attempts -- just successful connections from my iPad and MacBook.
    Any advice is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Dan

Hi. Thanks for the reply. It turns out that the router was not going into n mode because of the security I set on it. I finally figured this out and the AE did connect in n mode after all.
Well at least it's working now but I feel a little bad for posting when it was my fault!!
    Cheers!

  • Time Capsule & Airport Express as a bridge

I am using a Time Capsule as my wireless router upstairs, and I would like to set up an Airport Express as a bridge so that I can connect my Xbox 360 to my network (to play Xbox Live and stream Netflix and iTunes, etc.). Do I have to do something to the Time Capsule to get this to work? Or can I just use a laptop downstairs (where the Xbox is) to configure the Airport Express as a bridge? I looked in the manual settings of the Time Capsule but all I see is for it to extend a network, not to allow anything else to extend the network it's already creating.

+In the Airport Utility they are both configured to "Join a wireless network" and have checked the box to "Allow Ethernet clients". Very stable connection.+
Not sure if you were aware that you have the option to configure the AXs to "extend a wireless network" as well. The ethernet port is also active in the "extend" configuration. If you need more wireless coverage, this is a nice feature of the AX(n).
Then again, if you don't need the additional wireless coverage and things are working well as you indicate, you might want to just leave things alone.

  • Apple Airport Express disappears

    Hello,
I do not think you live in the Bermuda Triangle and it is normal that my Airport Express disappears No, unfortunately not.
I would like to use my AE to stream music, they've also integrated it with the Airport utility into an existing wireless network.
10min long this works well, music will play properly, then "disappear", AE, and I can not in iTunes, select speakers, yet she finds the Airport Utility.
Oddly enough, the pilot light is lit on the AE still green ie actually it should work.
I use a router ASUS RT-N56U and use Windows 7
    Airport Utility software version 5.5.3
    iTunes version 10.5.2.11
p.s. Sorry for my bad english, it comes from Google Translate german-englisch :-)

    See if this doesn't help.

  • Extend Wifi with Airport Express when Airport Extreme is in Bridge Mode

    Hello,
I'm trying to make my Wifi network easier at home but Im having some trouble.
My Internet Provider installed a Router at home. So I had to connect my Airport Extreme to the IP Router via cable and setup in Bridge Mode.
In my Airport Extreme I created a Wifi Network called WIFI HOME.
Than I connected two Airport Express into my Airport Extreme via cable and created two new wifi networks: WIFI HOME 2 and WIFI HOME 3.
But, in my opinion, this is not cleaver way to have my Wifi Network setup, since I have to change networks all the time.
The problem is that every time I tried to extend my current WIFI HOME setup into one of the Airport Express, the Airport Express crashes during the setup reset and my network starts to behave wrongly.
I'm starting to think that is something related to the Bridge Mode in my Airport Extreme. but I want to check with you guys if that makes any sense.
    Thanks a lot!

Power off both of the AirPort Express devices
    Disconnect the Ethernet cables
    Wait a minute
Power up one of the AirPort Express devices for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 10 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express if it is a two port version
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a listing of New AirPort Bsee Station
    Click on AirPort Express
The setup utility will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network. Then, it will suggest that the Express be configured to Extend the AirPort Extreme network.
Type in a name that you want to call the AirPort Express.  Example........Express1
    Click Next
Then, the screen message will change to indicate that the AirPort Express is being configured to extend using Ethernet.
When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
The first Express is now set up and working correctly.
Set up the second Express exactly the same way........except give it a different name to avoid confusion.....Example......Express2.

  • AirPort Express disappears for network until it is rebooted, Arp problem

    Hi,
I have just configured my AirPort Express as a remote speaker for iTunes.
After the AirPort is powered on I can access it via AirPort admin tool and from iTunes.
After a while, the AirPort can no longer be connected to, either by the admin utility or iTunes.
I am running firmware 6.3, and have reinstalled this version. The unit is around 4 months old
Anyway, what I have noticed is that the AirPort does not seem to respond to TCPIP ARP requests which means that if a computer flushes or expires its ARP cache it will not be able to connect to the AirPort.
A network sniffer shows the ARP packets being broadcast on the network but there is no response from the AirPort.
I can see that the AirPort sends out ARP requests after a reboot, but will not respond to ARP requests that other machines on the network send out.
    Any ideas?
    Ta
    Gavin

I have had the AU running at all times but the AX's would still disappear.
The latest think I have tried is "not allow wireless clients" check box on the AX units. Since I have done this, I have not had an AX actually disappear. I now just deal with music skips and chops, if I turn on more than 2 units.
I also realize that using the AX units in for an Ethernet bridge is actually slower than using the Wireless G adapter. I use wireless to transfer shows on Tivo.
At this point, I am back to square one. The AE router gives me no benefits over a linksys or other wireless router. I can't use WDS, I can't use Ethernet Bridge.
The next thing I will try is to go back to Wireless G adapters on all the Tivos, then "allow wireless clients" and the AX units. At least I will get the WDS feature and be able to extend the range on my network.
I am guessing, if I just set up the AX units they way they were before (non-wds) and use the Tivo Wireless G adapters (essentially the way my networks was originally set up minus the AE router), that everything will work fine.
I would think Apple would do a better job before marketing products to do this.

  • Using telstra mobile broadband and airport express as a bridge.

I have a telstra wifi broadband that allows me to connect 5 devices.  I would like to connect up to 25 for a classroom activity.  i went to the apple genius bar and they said to use an airport express in bridge mode.  i cannot work out how to do this. it asks a number of questiosn that are a bit too tehcnical and i do no know how to set it up.
    Please help.

Use AirPort Utility to set up your Express.
On the 'Internet' tab, set the Express to bridge mode.

  • Airport Express won't Bridge Network

I am trying to use the airport express as a remote bridge, 1) connecting to my verizon Fios wireless router wirelessly then 2) through the ethernet port on the express. To distribute internet access.
I have entered the Mac Address of the wireless component on the router into the Express Airport Admin Utility under "WDS Main:" The wireless Mode is setup to "Participate in a WDS network". I have disabled any wireless security features to rule that out.
I continue to get a blinking yellow light and no internet connection on the Express Ethernet port.

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Verizon wireless router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).

  • Can you share an external hard drive over a network when your Apple Airport Extreme is in bridge mode?

Hello, is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?  I can't use my AE as my main router at the moment but still want to be able to use the hard drive on the network, and the router I am using isn't capable of adding an external hard drive.  I use Windows 7 and the other router is a Netgear.  I have searched the communities and have not come across an answer to this question.  I have tried several configurations within windows to try and see the hard drive but none have worked.  I can see the hard drive when I run Airport utlities, but it cannot be seen on the network.  Thanks to anyone who can help!

I think there is some confusion in this thread..
If you are sharing on a local LAN port forwarding is not required.
is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?
Answer is yes.. no port forwarding, mapping whatever term is used.. is needed. Port mapping is required when you cross over a NAT router.. as long as all the devices are inside a single LAN.. then no port mapping.
I assign to my Airport Extreme, do I do so with the settings of:
    Service: SMB
    Type: TCP
    Server IP: xx.x.x.x
    Port Start: 445
    Port End: 445
This would not work even from WAN.. SMB is blocked by all responsible ISP.. there is simply too many unprotected windows machines out there. If they allowed SMB .. the world would be flooded with hijacked bots. And stolen data like bank accounts. SMB is not a secure protocol.
But this is not necessary on a LAN.
The problem can be Mavericks which does a terrible job presenting network drives.. The usual recommendations are to use AFP or force the connection to CIFS (ie SMB1 not 2).
If you use airport,, then use AFP.
In finder.. Go, Connect to server.
AFP://AEname or AEIPaddress. (replace with the network name of the AE or its actual IP address).
When asked for password.. type public if you did not change it or use whatever password you put.
Store the password in the keychain.

  • Airport express disappears from list of multiple speakers

Since upgrading Mac OS X (to 10.5.7) and iTunes (to 8.2) my airport express remote speakers have not been working as reliably: The remote speakers tend to disappear from the "multiple speakers" list when they haven't been used for a few minutes. This is extremely annoying and takes away from the otherwise very smooth operation of iTunes Remote.
The current workaround for this is to quit and restart iTunes. This is NOT a solution since it requires users to go to the computer that iTunes is running on and to intervene manually. The express is hanging off a wireless network set up on an Airport Extreme. Normally, I control iTunes remotely with my iPhone so I can change what's playing and so on.

New observation: the problem seems to depend on whether you have a WDS network. Things are working much better for me since I reconfigured my network. Previously I used the express to extend the network set up on the extreme. After changing things so the express is just hanging off the extreme's wireless network iTunes has not been losing the express or speakers anymore. In fact, I can unplug the speakers, move them to a different part of the house, and often I can just plug them back in and they start playing again. Every now and then I have to stop and start them but I can do it with Remote where before I had to go to the computer that iTunes is playing on.
Eventually I will be wanting to extend the network again to take the laptop outside on the decks since without WDS the network ends pretty close to the house's walls. I hope Apple will fix the original problem by then.

  • Old AirPort Express disappears

Using several AirPort Express points to stream music to different areas of the house. The old one disappears - believe this is ever since I upgraded to AirPort Utility 6. I get a message that this version of the Airport Utility does not support the old AirPort Express, then it disappears even though it appears to be connected to the network - I've been unable to stream music to it.
The original AirPort Express is pretty old, the second one is not quite 2-years old, and we just bought a new one (looks like a white Apple TV - having trouble connecting this one, but that's in another discussion).
    Help!

    ========

Thank you, the link was very helpful. I ended up setting up a new Airport based network using both v6 and v5 of AirPort Utility.  Everything is working the way I wanted it to - except I didn't expect to have to set-up a second network.   Oh well.

  • Airport Express Disappears

I have had an airport express which I use for airtunes and for a remote printer for about a year and have had no trouble with it.  I added a second about a week ago and it was also working fine.  Today, I upgraded my Lynksys WRT router to a medialink APR150N, which, for the most part, has worked much better.  The exception is the airport.  Now, if I walk away and come back to my macbook pro, the icons for the airports no longer appear in the Airport Utility.  I cannot print either.  Often, I can still play music, but that eventually quits too.  If I reboot the router, everything comes back.  Sometimes, if I merely change the router channel, all is well.
I have been looking around most of the day and have found dozens and dozens of people facing the same problem.  It does not appear that any of the suggested fixes (which are all over the map) have helped.  Ironically, most of those having trouble are using an Airport Extreme router.  I have not found another instance of the problem with this router.  Obviously Apple has a problem here.  Anyone know a solution?  Thanks in advance.

It is working now.  I'm not exactly sure what did the trick, so I'll put it all down here.  Upon advice from Medialink (who are great, by the way), I switched the router to WPA Personal rather than WPA/WPA2 personal.  This didn't seem to help.  But, I made the same change on the AE's.  With this setting, they disappeared entirely, so I set them back.  Now it works.  I believe I have seen the suggestion on other threads that the AE's need to be reset even though the settings are the same.  That may have been the case.
